Fingerprint slow down - OnePlus 3T Questions & Answers

Two days after I received my phone, I noticed my fingerprint sensor has slowed down dramatically. The finger print sensor used to be instant, now it takes one to two seconds to open the phone. I only downloaded a few social media apps and didn't change anything else. Is this normal? If not how can I fix this?

Well I mean I used to be able to just tap the sensor and it would open. I'm not actively trying to find problems with the phone, it was honestly pretty noticeable.

It's normal. If ur that worries do a factory reset

Not normal, do a factory reset

I agree, not normal. The 6p I had before this 3t was instantaneous! So far I'm disappointed in my 3t finger print reader.

Unfortunately I have to disagree. Fingerprint scanners aren't meant to be crazy fast. I seen the best phone out there 3 sec finger print scanner. 2-3 seconds 5 tops is normal. My note 5 finger print scanner 5 seconds . Still fast and normal. Hence a great day guys. What a 2 second waste.

I've already wiped my entire phone and tried multiple roms, I believe it's most likely a hardware problem.

I had the 6p before the 3t. While the 3t was working properly, the finger print sensor was crazy fast, actually almost too fast. It was definitely faster than the 6p when it was actually working optimally.

Sorry to hear that, this is the fastest most accurate I've ever used.

That leads me to believe that I must have a dud
---------- Post added at 05:18 AM ---------- Previous post was at 05:14 AM ----------
Actually, I must clarify. The scanner may be fast, but I have to try several times to get an accurate read to unlock. Most of the time requiring me to input my PIN.

6 weeks I've never had a misread or had to use a backup pin or password.
But I also average 12 hours screen on time per charge so maybe I got lucky and they sent me a special edition superphone

Fortunately, I can just return this device.

Just out of curiosity is this maybe just a difference with nouget or marshmallow?

I know it's probably too much to ask, but could you possibly shoot a video of how fast your fingerprint sensor works?

My guess now that you really made me think about it I'm seeing a 200-300 ms delay. My long press delay is set at 250ms so that's my gut feeling.

No, your Note 5 is slow then.
It is instant on my OP3T and I've tried to see if it's not fooling me.
No finger except the registered ones works so it is fast AND accurate.

Face Unlock is too quick! (Not bashing it)

I'm on day 2 with this phone, I've just moved over from a Note 8 and so far loving it!
It's still early days and not sure if over time I'll regret my decision coming away from Samsung, after being with them for a last 3/4 years, but I fancied a change and got really annoyed with the battery life on the Note 8!
Anyway my post is about the Face Unlock on the Mate 10 Pro, which came via the OTA update, well its soo much better and quicker than my Note 8 that it's maybe a little too good! For instance I like that it detects me even when wearing sunglasses, the Note 8 didn't, but when I'm at work I put my phone on my Wireless Charger (I know this doesn't have wireless charging before anyone says anything, I'm just using it as a stand atm) and when I get a notification come through my phone unlocks ha!
I have the setting on so my phone screen lights up when a notification comes through, similar to iOS, along with face Unlock which is rapid, it just unlocks my phone!!
I'm not complain just surprised at the difference between the Note 8 and Mate 10 Pro!

Mate 10 C636 on april update (.134) and I just tried face unlocking after having this phone for months, its super, super, incredibly fast. Works in dark areas but not super dark areas. I tried it on a dimly lit room and it worked, on a room with no lights it doesn't work because it doesn't use infrared.
I'm blown away by how fast it is.. I wanna bet $100 that this is so incredibly fast because the face detection is done by the NPU which is purpose built for stuff like this..

You can change that it goes to homescreen automaticallybut you stay on lock screen. There is a setting that disables going to homescreen but still unlocks the phone. Then you only need to swipe to go to homescreen or double tap the notification.
I have that turned on because I like to check my Lockscreen before deciding whether I want to use the phone (see who texted before deciding whether I text back or ignore).
Additionally you can enable that the contents of your notifications are hidden unless your face is detected. This way you nosey GF won't be able to see your side chick texting you. Lol
edit: i never managed to fool it with a photo. tried many times.
Fast but not accurate
As a camera with nothing else its so quick but I've got problems because it detects my twin brother as mine "some times" but its good enough

Ah thanks, I've just changed it so I have slide to unlock now, as I much prefer that as I can read the notifications and respond as and when!
I tried the hide notifications to start off with but turned it off as preferred them on, I don't have a nosey girlfriend to deal with, hell I don't even have a girlfriend so I'm good there lol!

That's pretty unlucky, I don't have that issue and have not been able to unlock the phone with a picture so I'm happy with it.

Fingerprint sensor

Wanted to start up a thread where users can share their experience with the underscreen fingerprint scanner as well as faceunlock.
I registered both thumbs and right index finger. It seems like the scanner will only read the finger correctly if the finger is placed in the same orientation as it was during the initial registration. This is a bummer.
Seems like the faceunlock unlocks the phone even before the fingerprint scanner tries to read the print.
The faceunlock is not that secure. I would go out and say it is not secure at all. My brother came to check my new phone and it unlocks the phone based on his face. I think it's only because we both have beards.
Anyway, bit disappointed, with they just stick with regular fingerprint reader on the back.
The underscreen fingerprint scanner is a tech that is not really ready for primetime. I hope this does not hinder the sales of the phone.
I am using a T-Mobile variant on 9.0.
Hi there,
So, my theory is that the finger print sensor is NOT optimized for Oxygen OS. there is a huge lag obviously compared to any previous Oneplus Phones. that being said, there are a couple of factors that can contribute:
Screen is dirty
Finger is dirty.
Try registering your fingerprint in Paypal or Cash or any of Google Pay or your banking app or any of the other programs that require a fingerprint sensor. Since it was already registered and (hopefully only) stored on the phone, these apps all registered my finger lightning (sorry apply pun) quick. NOT as fast as previous fingerprint sensors on the back, but MUCH faster, at least to me, as trying to unlock it on the screen once it's sleeping. Yes, and by the way, the sensor is NOT always on.
For instance, you have to either turn the screen on, or have the tap to unlock screen or raise to unlock screen on in order to have the sensor unlock your fingerprint.
There's also quite a few bugs i've found. To me, and I've owned every Oneplus since the 2, the T mobile version doesn't feel that optimized in terms of OxygenOS. I don't have an unlocked 6T to compare, but there's a few things that the T Mobile version doesn't include, that was announced at the presentation, since as the nice portrait mode of the camera. I am hoping that it gets updated soon, otherwise i'll just completely buy this out and sell it and pick up a RED 6 or 6T again.
Suffice to say, i'm a little disappointed. Great advertising though with EVERY tech site that this was the future, although the future is not as quick as what's going on now.
Face unlock is VERY quick, but not that secure. I agree.
If it wasn't for the larger battery and the T Mobile trade in, I would have gone back to the Oneplus 6, however, I can't find RED in 128/8.
I have multiple fingers registered and they all work fine and fast. Increasingly fast in fact ... So fast that it made me wonder if the phone was actually locked in the first place by using unregistered fingers. Works fine and fast no matter what orientation my finger is on the sensor.
I've been reading so many posts complaining about the in-display fingerprint sensor ... Saying it's slow. Glitchy. Inconsistent. I have not seen any hint of that on my new OP6T.
It seems to function as good as or better than my OP3T's dedicated sensor.
I was having issues as well so deleted all my prints and redid them this time by not pressing so hard on the screen. Now it works 10x better
I have an unlocked version and I think, in my case, it has worked better then the sensor on the back. My fingers are the nastiest , dirtiest(stained with oil and dirt) and it does better then what the back sensor ever did . It may be a touch slower but does a half second really matter ?
Sent from my ONEPLUS A6013 using Tapatalk
Same here, works perfectly for me, I have 4 fingerprints registered, both thumbs and indexes. They all got increasingly faster with time.
My friend came over yesterday with his pixel 3xl, was worried the in screen reader would be mediocre, but he was so impressed with the performance, decided to sell his phone and order the 6t, guess he couldn't live with that notch lol
You don't even need to add multiple prints. When setting up your print, just scan in at different angles with every press. I used the same strategy with the old external scanner so my fingerprint could be picked up at odd angles, and it applies to this as well. There is no difference between this under display reader and the old external one, in terms of speed.
I came from Samsung Note8 and the sensor on the 6T is much faster than the Note 8.
Not sure what kind of weird crap ya'll are having to do to get your prints working in different angles... I simply registered mine as normal. I can do them from upside down, sideways... It doesn't matter.
I don't understand why so many seem to be having issues with this. It's by far faster and more reliable than the capacitive scanner on my old OP2. One interesting thing I've noticed is that if there is a slight delay, it's the OS not the scanner. Sometimes I'll remove my finger before the screen unlocks but the screen still unlocks, it just takes a few extra microseconds. The scan time is less than a second and it seems to work in various finger positions.
Coming from 5T and 6 I find the 6T scanner to be perfectly fine. It may be "marginally" slower but we're really splitting hairs. It fires up and unlocks in a timely manner.
As for face unlock if I wear my sunglasses in the car it won't unlock with my face. I have to pop my shades off for it to register.
I have no issues with mine, I can unlock it from any angle on all my registered fingers. I'd recommend deleting your fingerprints and reregistering.
Maybe we should start posting how we registered our fingerprints. The ones that are having success should post how they registered there fingerprints. Then we can determine a sure fire way on how to do it.
The scanner is working fine for me.
I found that for my left thumb, training it in the way I place my finger when I pick up the phone made it fast and flawless.
Too everyone who states its laggy or slow, especially compared to previous ONEPLUS devices, remember this, the in-display fingerprint sensor is optical meaning it scans an IMAGE of your finger as reference. Hardware fingerprint sensors map a 3d layer of your finger which makes them faster and more responsive because they do not have to rely on light or image capture. I can say without a doubt tho, the oneplus 6t has the fastest optical fingerprint sensor compared to other manufacturer, including the mate 20 pro. This has also been proven in a couple youtube comparisons. Optical will never be perfect because it relies on light, pressure and image scanning. I have used the fingerprint sensor and face unlock and I am quite impressed with both, no issues at all for me. Yes they are both less secure but if people are that worried about security, stick with a PIN instead. I am by no means bickering at people, just want to relay useful information to provide a valid arguement in OnePlus' favor as they have truly optimized their unlock methods compared to others who use the SAME technology.

You have to pop your shades off because part of the code for face unlock is that it requires youre eyes to be looking at the screen to unlock. Its so that someone cant try to steal your phone while your sleep and unlock it with your face to snoop. Test it, have a friend look at the phone while you look at it with your eyes closed, then open your eyes and it will unlock.

That really sucks since AOD uses a lot more battery. If basically causes the phone to burn an additional 1% per hour when in stand by.

That may be true. Although we still don't know how much power the motion sense sensor uses. The motion sense senor is basically radar. It's sending out radio waves and detecting what comes back. That takes power too. It's possible that the motion sense sensor always running will use just as much battery than AOD does. It could even use MORE battery than AOD.

LOL! I agree with most of what I've seen you post, but this? C'mon. Google consistently misses things when their phones are first released. Google routinely does not think of everything, at least not at first launch anyway. Often times they only seem to be aware of issues after hundred of users report on it.

I loled when i read that to. I was just telling my friend who works at Verizon and is trying to get me to upgrade that ill wait till people get it in hand as pixels are known to have phone breaking bugs at launch lol
I go through a lot of phones and all had problems, some of them never got fixed. I'm doubtful this phone will be any different than every phone before it in that regard. AOD uses power, no lie, I like it so I leave it on. Turning it off is no answer, I get that. What I don't get is turning off all the cool features a phone has to save batt when charging is everywhere, it's quick, and portable supplies are cheap, work well, and will get you through a pinch. This phone will likely have 4 or more hours without skimping on anything. To me the win is playing with the toys I bought, not gimping them to save battery life which can be easily and well covered.
This isn't a call out BTW, I just don't understand the thought process.
having an LED notification light is better than not having one. There's plenty of room. The Pixel 4 has a lower screen to body ratio than the S8. And while the S8 has an annoying curved screen, it has an LED notification light. It can coexist with an AOD. You can turn one off and use the other. Just like the headphone jack argument IMO. And the LED notification light is just so useful. It's a shame that app that lets you customise it got neutered by Google's updates to Android.
Oh and it sucks that there isn't an SD card either. It makes sense to companies as they can push paid cloud storage but not to customers.

Doesn't make sense to add as card support, as this still is a hack - as has been on Linux based systems for years - and thus a security risk. It actually doesn't make any sense to add a hack to my system. Just my 2 cents.

I don't think there motion sensor uses much power at all. I fully charged me phone before I went to bed last night and left it off the charger overnight. It only used 4% battery over 9 hours.

Well that's good news. That stand by time is better than I thought it would be with the radar sensor but still not what I got from my Pixel 2 XL when it was new. I dropped about 2-3% over 8 hours. Even now after 2 years I still only see about 4% over 8 hours.

Face Unlock is pretty bad

I'm coming from an iPhone XS Max and I've gotta say this face Unlock is pretty bad in comparison. Very laggy.
Compared to the iPhone I personally feel like the face unlock works extremely well. I would try rescanning your face
Yes I think the pixel 4 doesn't have as wide of a viewing sometimes in bed I have to move the phone further up when I think my wife never had to do that but she probably just uses her password.... I wish they left the rear fingerprint that was the best option until youre hand where wet or had gloves on

Question First Thoughts - Share Yours

So after spending the afternoon looking over my pixel 7 and setting it up I thought I would share a few thoughts.
I have had a number of larger phones over the years so the pixel 7 is smaller than what I am used to, I wanted a smaller size though as I had had enough of my "larger" phone.
I bought the Obsidian black version and all I will say is it is a massive fingerprint magnet, also it is one slippery bugger! More so than any other phone I have had, so a case for it is a priority.
There are a few of what I would call glitches, when turning the phone on from sleep the bottom third of the screen seems very faded before normalising, is that by design? I don't know.
Also talking of the screen it seems very dull, even at full brightness.
When putting the phone to sleep and then placing it on my wireless Google charger it wakes the phone back up the show the charging details and also the time date - The time date though are not how I had it set up, they are miss aligned - is there a setting to turn this off that I have missed somewhere? (I'm not talking about the always on display - I have that turned off)
Also the charging animations... wtf! Horrible! is there a way to turn that mess off?
So what are your first thoughts/initial impressions of your Pixel 7?
Anything little bugs/glitches that annoy you?
Anything you wish you could change?

Good review! Kudos
I'm in wait and watch mode on the 7, since I had early issues with the 6 Pro...
Cheers

I had issues with the 6pro as well, bought it direct from Google the day after release.
Had multiple issues with it and Google said they thought I had a defective unit and to send it back to them and they would replace it.
However no replacement showed up and they then just refunded me.
After that little fiasco I went and bought a S21+ which is the phone I was using until today.

That's not so good
Overall I am happy with it, no major issues.
1. Face unlock seems slightly worse than the Oneplus 7T from 2019. Maybe I am mistaken as it has been a while since I used the Oneplus.
2. My screen protector doesn't make contact on the left top edge, I tried applying two. Not sure if it's the protector or phone screen. It is perfectly centered.
3. For some reason it can take a second or two to load after clicking the settings app shortcut in the quick settings menu.
4. Have had some reproducible touch sensitivity issues. Again, not sure if protector or phone but I did enable screen protector mode. Didn't have this issue with the P6.
5. Once again I have to manually force high refresh rate for Snapchat and some other apps.
6. Not sure if this is the case with the Pixel 6, but Snapchat is taking a picture of the viewfinder. Looks absolutely horrible in low light without the Gcam processing.
7. The unlock animation does not look high refresh rate.
It almost feels like I am dropping more frames navigating the UI than my Pixel 6. Although I did follow the optimization guide for the Pixel 6, so I have to do the same on the 7 and see if there is a change. This is something I feel like will probably be improved via updates, it is release day after all.
Also what do you mean by charging animations?
This phone genuinely feels like a Pixel 6 with face unlock (which should have been added to P6 via software update).
Also please share Geekbench 5 scores, I got 1010 Single-core, 2771 Multi-core. Was kinda hoping it would be higher considering the "leaked" multi-core was 4000.
Got a 75mb update and Geekbench is now 1048/3237 which is more in line with what I expected.

If my phone screen is turned off and I then place it on the google pixel charge stand the screen wakes and does some kind of animation, then shows the clock and charge status for a few seconds before turning off again.
I would love to be able to turn all of those animations off, they are horrible.
Mine is perfect. No issues whatsoever.
I came from a Pixel 3. The Pixel 7 is definitely heavier!

Try turning it on
I'm coming from a Pixel 3 XL, and I was expecting a nice upgrade, but wow, I feel like I went from a 1992 Ford pickup to a 2023 Honda Civic Type R. What a difference. From the build quality to the overall feel. It is just such a premium experience. I set it up about three hours ago, and have been playing with it for about the last two hours. This thing is perfect. And for about 1/2 the cost of my Pixel 3 XL at launch. I can see myself keeping this for the five years of security updates easy. Even if the battery starts losing charge I know I can get it replaced like I did my 3 XL, so no worries for the next five years. At least five years. Maybe more.

Mine did the same thing for the first 15 minutes or so. Rebooting helped, but it still disconnected twice. After it download all my apps (in between disconnects, so it took a long time), and I finished setting it up, the Wi-Fi has been steady strong. I guess it was new growin pains. it's been running flawlessly the past three hours.

I had the same issue. It wouldn't reconnect after either. Forgetting the wifi network and adding it back fixed the issue.
I bought it yesterday. I hooked up to my LG V60 and synced up everything. Really painless setup. Been steady using it. I love all the photo feature Google packs in the Pixel 7. I have had no disconnections of wifi or anything like that. Calls are clear. Really love the phone. I hate using it without a case and screen protector. But have that coming after the weekend. Got the Spigen rugged case from Amazon. My only gripe so far is the face unlock. It's a bit wonky. But the finger sensor works great.

Try to redo the Face Unlock. Hold it arms length, and in a bright light area. I did that the second time, and now even when I'm sitting at a desk, and the phone is laying on top, if I double tap the screen, the Face Unlock can see me, and it unlocks instantly.
EDIT - Oh, and the calls are excellent. My first three were crystal clear. Way better than my 3 XL. I'd say better than landlines.
Phone is very fast coming from a Pixel 3. I do have to say this thing is **** huge and brick heavy. The fingerprint reader is horrible compared to a dedicated rear reader. Camera seems pretty nice, that unblur gimmick isn't production ready.
I absolutely love the screen. Feels heavy, but I don't mind it as it feels solid and I think is built well. I miss the back/feel of the pixel 2, which I don't know if people even liked that lol. My fingerprint basically never works though haha maybe I'm just registering it poorly. Came from OnePlus 8T, really missed the AOSP feel.
.
I came from oneplus 8t and im in love with this pixel 7, android stock its really more beautiful than these chineses software(s) like oos12.
Face unlock is working as expected, working good except when im in a dark room with low light
My only issue for now is fingerprint scanner, it's working about 1 time on 10 i don't understand why but there's an high chance that's screen protector fault, since i did not even try without it. After the unboxing of the phone, the first thing i did was put screen protector on it then unlocked bootloader and rooted.
Except for FP Scanner, this device is amazing IMO, super fluid animation and transitions from activities. I bought it because i was tired of big screen device and for my needs the dimenions of the display are perfect.
Of course, compared to the oneplus 8t that have an amoled display, colors are better and more brilliant (on op8t) but i don't dislike OLED of the P7, maybe more safier for my eye rests
And i won't speak about comparisons of the FP scanner of these device since the one of op8t is working ALWAYS, never miss a try
My next thing to do is to try FP without any screen protector and if it's working well, to buy a new screen protector maybe better than the one i have installed
EDIT: another important thing: since is my first time with non-snapdragon device, i've noticed that this tensor G2 is working really good, always cool even with wifi-data-gps-bluetooth are on in a connected session with android auto on my car. Oneplus 8t heats up during same sessions but not the pixel 7

The screen is so good. When I first started using it I though it was a good upgrade from my 3 XL, but now after a couple days of using it, I played with the 3 XL, and wow, what a difference. If feels so light and flimsy, and the screen is so dull compared to the 7. And yes the 7 is very heavy compared to the 3 series, but it add that premium feel because of it (IMO). The entire 7's build is quality. I look at my 3 now, and it seems like a Fisher Price toy.
EDIT - Redo your fingerprints. Take your time and read what it asks. I see a lot of setups on YouTube, and they complain about the fingerprint reader, and when I watch them set it up they just spam their finger each time. It asks for a certain angle on some. Like first press normal, then the tip, then the left side, then the right side. I think a lot of people don't read what's asked each press, and then it doesn't work well for them.
The first couple of days coming from a pixel 4a ,,P7 is heavier but in a good way ,, feels premium, and so far I could not be happier ,everything is better than the 4a, sound is louder and crisper, screen more vibrant and faster scrolling, voice quality on calls are amazing, call reception has been excellent even on low bars, Have not noticed any lag with this chipset but then again Iam not a heavy user, Iam sure I will find more things better but so far 100 percent like it.
