Hi!
I purchased a brand new P9 32GB two weeks ago and im really happy with it most of the time. I like to save both battery and money by turning off mobile data and background update for most of the apps, even the system apps and keeping the most important ones on. This works great most of the time but i got a slight problem with it. I have mobile data turned off for Google Play Store. If im on mobile data with wifi turned off and i need a app, i will go into settings to turn on mobile data for Google Play Store. But thats when the strange thing happens.. Mobile data wont work for Google Play Store (or any other app). Its turned on, i open the app but it tells me i need either a wifi connection or mobile data connection. The only way to fix this is to turn on mobile data and background update for every app and restart the phone. My friend also bought the exact same model but from a different store, and he also experienced this problem. The method by enabling all the apps and restarting the phone usually worked for him, but last time it didnt work at all so he had to return it to the store and get a new phone. I've also been in contact with Huawei's customer support but they hadnt even heard of this problem.
So im asking here. Does anyone know what could cause this problem?
Note: Device is not rooted.

Hi, I wonder if anybody can help me. Up until the day before yesterday I was using whatsapp fine over wifi (where I am at the moment there is no mobile signal) on my O2 UK Z1 and then whatsapp lost all connection. Everything else on the phone was working fine but no whatsapp. Every message I sent would go to the clock, no information when people were last online and the faq etc. in the settings would not load because of lack of connection.
I uninstalled the app and then installed it again and all was fine, after sending a few messages the same error occurred again. I have now found that if I clear data in the app settings it will connect again, once I have reconfigured the app and restored from backup. I can only assume that there is some sort of buffer which I am clearing as I lose a few messages when I clear data (all since last backup).
Barring doing a delete of all backups and messages does anyone have any other idea. I have looked and the backup files are about 1.7mb so not massive and I have a fair bit of storage available onboard (>7gb).
I was talking to someone with a HTC phone who had suffered similar symptoms but I have googled and searched and can't find a solution.
Any help much appreciated.
Mark
2 weeks off work and no issues, as soon as I have returned the issue has reared it's head so looks like it's something to do with the wifi here. Everything else works fine and fast so I guess I'll just have to live with it

A factory reset for a cheap Whazz, huge work buddy...lol... at last it's an idea but I will try reinstall mobile settings before that or uninstall and reinstall Whatsup.
I work in a very remote location, I have wifi (which is distributed from a satellite feed) out here and for my mobile phone that is the only connection option. When I am away from work whatsapp always works, both over wifi and cellular data. At work I keep my phone in aeroplane mode with wifi turned on to try and preserve some battery (there is no point in my phone constantly looking for a non existent cellular signal).
This morning I deleted all messages in whatsapp, uninstalled the app and re-installed/configured. Usually I get a failure within 24 hours of doing this so we'll see whether this rectifies the issue.
I know I'm not the only person out here that has had the issue so it is either a coincidence or something with the way the wifi is configured here. I just assumed that the wifi would either work or not but, I am not an expert.
Hi all.
Yesterday evening I did a Play Store update via WiFi at a friends and afterwards the WiFi would turn on by itself. I noticed it because I kept getting the connection is unstable message after I manually turned WiFi off. The phone was trying to connect to a neighbor's open network that is just out of range.
This is the second time I've seen this problem and I'm assuming that since both phones were unrooted stock with all the bloatware disabled in app manager that the problem was with one of the 20 plus apps that updated. I uninstalled all the downloaded apps but it had no affect on the problem I went through all the settings for networks and didn't find any changes. What's the chances that one of the apps I downloaded was compromised. It freaked me out so much I hard reset the phone both times. I currently have set the Play Store to manual updates only so I can catch the culprit if it happens again my questions are is there way to view a log of what uses the the WiFi ? And how can I prevent this kind of problem in the future. And has this happened to anyone else?
Thanks much for your time and consideration
Hello everybody,
I am using Note 9 for few months (was forced to upgrade from Note 4 what suddenly died ) and I have noticed very irritating thing.
My phone is connecting on mobile data even they are turned off 2 - 3 times per month.
First few months I thought that I somehow turned them on, but my phone is always fingerprint locked so that is not possible. Last time it happened when I was walking in the forest and once while I was sleeping in the bus... So it really is NOT some kind of accidental user mistake.
Problem is that I dont need mobile data all the time so I have them switched off almost always and use them only when required for email and etc just few times. I have offline GPS navigation and everything I need for work always works offline. Data plan was never economical for me.
Anybody noticed this?
I am trying to diagnose this issue and turn that off because I am paying on connection basis.
It is really irritating that phone is doing something on its own and doesnt care what user set up... I really think that user app cannot enable mobile data on its own, so I suspect OS itself...
This suggestion isn't exactly what you're looking for, but, one I find helps somewhat.
Go to SETTINGS > APPS & on each app, go to MOBILE DATA & turn off background data.
Not only does it curb unwanted data usage, but, may also offer a marginal improvement in battery life.
As for the issue you're experiencing, I haven't had that issue.
The only thing that I can imagine is possibly you have an app that has the ability/permission to turn on data, even if you have data turned off in the phones settings.
I've never heard of it being triggered by external means either, definitely an unusual issue.

Thank you for inspiration . This may be good starting point.
I have checked mobile data usage statistics. Sad that you can see only one month statistics and not like last week or last 24 hours. This week I had 2 unwanted connections again (today again happened during trip when phone wasnt even in my hands).
In last month there are few apps that are system installed, I have disabled mobile data on background on each of them:
- Samsung Experience Service
- Samsung Push Service
- Media
I will see if it will make any changes and report here in another days.
I will check maybe on stackexchange if its even possible for user application to enable mobile data withouth users approval. Is far as I know, even system administrator apps like Cerbersu cant do that...

Please keep us posted on your progress.
I'm not rooted, so, any system apps that I know that I won't use, I disable them, either via ADB commands, or, using the app Package Disabler Pro.
If you are rooted, I strongly recommend using SD Maid Pro. It's good not only for disabling apps, but, you can stop individual processes from starting up on boot on a per-app basis. (Among other several uses).
If you're interested & need links to either/all, let me know......

I wonder if data is turned on either by samsung to maybe location service or remote lock service?
Im not sure but does Note 9 has "aGPS"? Doesn't it connect to cell towers for faster position lock?
Do you have any anti theft software installed what pinging server once a while?

I have installed Cerberus as anti theft service. I doubt thats culprit of this because I had it installed previously on Note 2 and Note 4 fo about 6 years in total and never had this issue before. Maybe this is something different in new app version, but I am very suspicious about Samsung preinstalled stuff.
AGPS is of course present, like on any phone since around 2012. But you really dont need internet connection for using that. It should use coordinates from BTS mobile stations and those data should be obtained without internet. As far as I know...
Now its 2 days without data enabled issue. Few more days and we will know if disabling background data for those 3 services helped.
Because my mobile data is much faster than my WiFi but there's a problem on my 1908.12 tencent edition.
At first I thought it's because I didn't turn off data limit warning, so I turn it off but it still the same.
I tried download big app (Asphalt 9) and it's about 1.8GB-1.9GB. The other apps which are smaller than 100MB has no problem so far.
The symptom is after around 20%-30% the download bar in notification will disappear and in Play store, the percentage will stuck there. I noticed my 4G+ up and down have no movement since then.
What I've tried so far
-Turn off data limit warning
-Clear cache and data on Play store (app manager)
-Restart
There's a possibility that my phone is not in a great working condition because it's still under cn fingerprint but global rom.
Did anyone has this issue? I'll try WiFi tonight and will update this again.
Honestly I have no ideas but some people complaining their network disappearing and reappearing sometimes and disrupting their operations.
Maybe you get a temporary network flap and the download/update refuses to continue.
Try with only Wi-Fi and see if there's any difference.

Updated. I just tried with Wi-Fi awhile ago, it's the same but stuck on 40%. I have 90GB free space.
Thanks for your respond.

Then problem is most likely not from your network but memory.
Try downloading offline apk and installing directly.
Also, since gms was probably installed later, check all Google services and ensure all necessary permissions are allowed
I bought a pixel 5 to do courier work, I just needed something reliable with good battery life to run GPS and a handful of delivery apps.
Since the day I bought it I have had problems with notifications on mobile internet, for the most part I don't get any for any apps until I connect to wifi, then they all come flooding through at once.
I have tried every fix ive come across, changing from 5g to 3g, installing a heartbeat fixer app, changing background battery and data settings. Sometimes they seem to work, sometimes restarting the phone works but nothing sticks. I have spent hours talking to google support, they have made me factory reset 3 times, it normally fixes it at first, but last time it didn't and even with a completely fresh OS I wasn't getting any notifications on mobile internet, I tested by emailing my gmail account before installing any more than the default apps.
I should note that I have a strong internet connection the entire time, If i open gmail and refresh it the emails are there, I just don't get notifications for them until I connect to wifi.
The lack of notifications breaks a lot of apps as it seems they rely on the notifications or whatever protocol they use to work. The big issue for me is one of the courier app will give me no runs unless notifications are working.
Anyone have any ideas? I'll happily paypal anyone who can suggest a permanent fix $50 lol, if not I'll have to buy a different phone.

Sounds like you have a lemon on your hands.
I don't suppose you're using a VPN? I've had all sorts of strange issues with notifications and using a VPN as when the phone goes to sleep it can disconnect you from the network.
Or apps like Netguard where you can set apps to connect to either the wifi or mobile network or restrict them.
If you have no apps installed that can restrict your network usage then it seems your phone might have a problem.
No, even straight after a factory wipe, no notifications, that seemed to coincide with the latest pixel update a few days ago because nothing I tried would get it to work which is why I factory reset and for the first time it wasnt working after the factory reset either.

I don't suppose it's something simple as...
I sent myself some emails and used the "find my device" in order to cause some notifications, as you can see on the video, nothing comes through until I connect to wifi.

Yep I think it's time for a new phone lol.
Have you tried a different provider, a friends sim card? It may be incompatible with the P5. There was a problem in USA with Mintmobile and the P5 but Google fixed it. Which service provider do you use?
