Well i had the same issue and I had to give it to the service center and I got it back after 2 mnths yea i know it's a long time but i guess it was worth it in the end... but looking at how to do it urself I think it's a huge risk.... to even do it....
I've followed these steps and got to the last part. The service manua doesn't explain how to lift the LCD / touchscreen out (it's covered by grey tape). Does anyone know how to do the last steps?
I cant download that manual to see how far it goes but assuming you get as far as removing the 3 screws and removing the chassis plate to expose the rear of the LCD (can see the LCD part number 62H00004-31M)
All that holds the screen in now is adhesive, you can release this by, from the front, inserting an artists pallette knife around the sides and top and gently and progressively levering up to break the bond. Do not do this at the bottom or you will likely damage the flexi.
You now have an assembly which consists of a glass lens with the LCD bonded to the back and the digitiser bonded to the front, it is probably easier in the long run to replace this whole assembly.
To remove the digitiser lift the silver bonding tape and then the kapton tape from the digitiser connector (4 track connector) and de-solder the connector
To remove the digitiser from the front of the glass lens it is beneficial to heat it slightly (around 60 deg C). Then insert the pallette knife between the digitiser and the glass and slice it off - there is quite a lot of adhesive so take it carefully and do not lever as it may break the glass. Once the digitizer is off the glass needs to be cleaned of adhesive. Label removing fluid is good for this but ensure it doesn't get ino the LCD as it will ruin it.
All you need to do now is fit a new digitiser using optically clear adhesive-a tricky job unless you have a pressing fixture to ensure no air bubbles. I've also found that a lot of replacement Digitisers come complete with the glass lens and as it is impossible to remove the old LCD from the lens without cracking, they would seem pretty pointless to me?

I was looking for replacement glass on ebay. There are glass/digitizers combo but they dont seem to be made by HTC. I have 3 questions
1) Do the glass/digitizers on ebay perform well?
2) Is it possible to swap in a used screen from a dead N1? DO i need the adhesive strips etc
3) DOes anyone have glass to sell?

1. Yes. I have purchased 7 for mytouch 4g from ebay and amazon with no issues (they work). I got 1 that had 0.15mm (I'm talkinreally small) bubble but it caused no issue and could only be seen by close inspection with the screen off
2. yes...from a dead N1 I would think it easier to swap the main board and avoid lcd/touchscreen removal from the frame...if you remove the lcd/touchscreen from the frame an adhesive (3m double stick tape is commonly used) will be needed.....place don't use glue...out makes a huge mesa and is entirely unneeded overkill
3. Ebay... Under thirty bucks....some local repair shops do this repair fir $20 + parts
Oh yeah. Glass swap is easy(but I do electronic product refurbishing fora living)..take your time as the cables and connectors can be delicate. You must also be careful not to get dust between touchscreen and lcd or fingerprints inside the touchscreen
Ok great. I have found some OEM ones on ebay and that seems like a good direction.
Is there a write-up anywhere of how to use the doublesided sticky tape so that the screen lays down into the frame perfectly?

To apply tape I
1.remove old adhesive from frame
2.remove protective plastic from touchscreen (lcd side)
3.lay touchscreen on table finger side (the side that faces out) down
4.place strips of adhesive (double stick tape) onto touchscreen black border region (leave aprox 0.2mm gap from visable area)....do not cover flash, front cam or light sensor areas (if applicable)
5.place touchscreen with lcd side down
6.you can now user razor blade to trim excess along the the edge of touchscreen
I have never doe a n1...only mytouch4g and hd2 but I am sure it is practically the same
Dust is not much of am issue....you will probably introduce more dust trying to clean our blow out the dust....you can buy that antistatic air spray (this may be helpful but but needed if carful)
Also make sure you get the right one. There is the OLED and the LCD one...
You can see which you have from the back of yours (not sure if there is another way to find out) I bought the wrong one for mine so if you need the LCD one, drop me a line...
Ok so i have a cracked digitizer...
I am going to replace it myself, however this phone is obviously not a straight forward repair.
Anyone have any personal experience replacing the digitizer on this phone? I have seen the youtube videos and read the xda.cn chinese breakdown, just looking for some personal input on the process if someone has one.
Also what will i need to rebuilt it? Do i need double sided tape etc. Thanks

i replaced it on 2 hd7 phones.
its a real pain to get it off because the glue tape they use goes all the way around, and its strong stuff.
you need to take apart the entire phone to get to the ribbon cable where the digitizer plugs in, so just look for some youtube videos of a tear down and watch carefully.
honestly the hardest part for me was getting the screen and digitizer clean of fingerprints and tiny broken glass pieces without messing up the screen, while keeping the double sided tape i put on in place and intact.
just take your time and everything will go smoothly.
-edit- yes you will need some double sided tape because when you take the digitizer off the sticky layer of the tape goes with it, the rest of the tape stays on the screen and is impossible to get off without damaging your screen so you have to apply new tape over it.
i used some thin scotch brand double sided tape and i cut it into long narrow strips with a razor using my old digitizer as a cutting board, the same width as the original tape.

I managed to get the digitizer out, however on replacing the new one i have a problem..
You know the old digitizer has three plastic prongs, on the buttons at the bottom, search etc.
Am i rigth in saying they need to be transferred to the new digitizer? As i can't see how they fit on the LCD when stuck to the digitizer? It raises the digitizer a little, unless they hand off the edge of the lcd?

Those are nothing more than spacers. I have replaced two digitizers without them. As long as you get some good 3M double sided in that area there is no problems.

um no they arent spacers...they are what directs the light to the 3 bottom keys. they are there for a reason so i recommend using them... ... now you are spot on with the 3m tape as it is the tape needed to do this whole job properly... the scotch crap is not made for this and WILL NOT HOLD UP NOR SEAL PROPERLY>>>
and for the person who said to put the tape over the old.... not a good idea... it can be removed and new should be used to replace the old..
sorry but i do this daily for a living so i do have a clue about this... just trying to help make it a successful repair and not one that ends up in my shop after the home repair failed and it damaged more than just the screen.....
I've cracked the outer layer of glass on my optimus x2 which I assume is just the digitizer (I'm new to all this smartphone jazz but i've had alot of experience with building computers and such and i can follow instructions) and i'm guessing the cheapest way to repair this thing is to do it myself. I emailed LG asking about what they can do with it and they were asking for £20 just to look at the damn thing so i can't imagine actually doing any work on it would be cheap.
(can't post links but it was just some cheap generic one from amazon for £30)
I'm guessing something like this would do the job but I also need some special adhesive to get the LCD to stick to the digitizer am i right? I'm worried that it will not be as responsive or i'll do it wrong and i only recently dished out £250 for this so i'd like to try and do this right. the digitzer should come with sticky strips which go around the outside of the lcd and stick to the out side of the digitizer.
Also try to get a digitizer with a frame already on it. otherwise youll have a little bit of a hard time trying to remove the glass from the frame, then gluing in the new one with adhesive.

Thanks for the reply, that's a lot of help Could you recommend any retailer that sells these? I can't work out if any of the ones i'm looking at come with the sticky strips. Would I also not need any adhesive if it comes with the frame? I'm not sure I trust myself too much with doing that either.....
I recently replaced my digitizer. I ordered a digitizer already in housing off ebay, shipped from Hong Kong. I would strongly recommend buying it with housing, as it's often difficult to completely make sure that dust does not get between the digitizer and the screen when you're using adhesive tape.
When disassemblying the o2x, I found the adhesive sticking the LCD to the digitizer frame was too strong for the LCD to come off just like that (be careful, it's quite fragile). I heated the LCD a bit using a hair dryer, to make it come of easier. This has the added effect that enough adhesive may stick to the LCD, so you don't need to replace it when placing it in the new frame.
I only added a couple of adhesive strips to the top and bottom of the new frame before mouting the LCD. That was pretty stupid, cause the extra 0.1mm between the digitizer and the LCD means that when tilting the phone ~60 degrees to the sides, I can see the backlights at the sides of the screen. Surprisingly this doesn't seem to add any noticeable backlight bleeding though, so it's not a problem at all. However, I'd suggest to try and see if the LCD sticks to the frame with the old adhesive, before using adhesive strips. And if using adhesive strips, make sure you remove all the old adhesive from the LCD, and use adhesive strips all around the frame.
The only minor things to look out for are:
- Be very careful with the LCD! It takes very little flexing before getting dead stripes/areas.
- Careful with the plastic at the USB port - it's a bit difficult to get to fit, and it's quite thin, so I figure it will break easily.
- At the top of the phone, where the digitizer (or LCD, I don't remember) cable is mounted, there's a little grey rubber-thingy - it suddenly fell off my phone, and it took embarrassingly long to figure out where and how it fits
- The small backup battery (?) in the upper left corner of the phone is glued to the frame. I used a small flat-headed screw driver to release it from the frame. Don't try and remove it by yanking the flex cable.
But all in all, replacing the digitizer with a new one (already in a frame) was a quick and easy operation.

i'm sure that wi-fi problems come from the mother board because i have an other same device so i made a test using the good one but the mic problems persisted

I had to replace mine recently, I read there are cheap ones where they only recognize 2 fingers instead of 5 like the genuine LG part. I ordered my digitizer from Ebay for around 18 british pound, I followed a few videos on Youtube with the disassembly, it's actually not that hard.
Keep in mind though that not all digitizers might come with glue attached or come with plastic tools, so keep a small bottle of glue and some plastic tools (credit card style plastic, knife) ready. One video recommends buying foam pads to glue around the digitizer, I didn't find that necessary, I just glued my new digitizer back onto the frame without problems. I accidentally made some glue residue onto the inside of mine, so make sure that you work very carefully

The hardest part is not to get dust between digitizer and lcd screen - you could consider wearing gloves...

Sorry for coming back to this rather old thread, but I have recently replaced the digitizer on my LG P990, bought on ebay shipped from Hongkong, following the video guide cited above. However the digitizer now works erratically with upper 1/4 not responding to touch, and sometimes the whole thing does not work, so I am unable to unlock the phone at all. The only thing that worried me during replacement was the thin layer of plastic film on the inner side, which teared off when removing protective layer (the film was extremely thin and fragile)-would this be the problem? Or the digitizer itself is of low quality?
Any suggestions appreciated.

Does anyone know a place to get the screen,the waterproof stickers, and anything else I would need for this thing?

I see couple on eBay, not sure if they'll ship to your location. Send a message to the seller first to double check the compatibility by mentioning your model number. Also make sure it's OEM (don't see Sony logo but they're probably showing a generic picture) & it comes with the adhesive. I'd also get a shatterproof screen protector this time!

You probably should not reuse the back cover adhesive (keep it clean of dust in case you have to reuse by mildly heating it. If anyone else knows the adhesive type, please chime in!

Doubt a screen protector would have helped. It literally gently fell 6" and shattered, the touch did not work after this.
Basically all parts you can find are fake. Those ones you posted are likely fake. The cheap one definitely is.
I got the parts needed from etrade supply. You need the front and back stickers. No stickers can be reused. You need the aux port sticker which is not available.
All the videos that show how to take it apart are misleading. They have already taken it apart and removed all the glue and stickers then put it back together. It will be way more work than it shows in the video.
In the videos it shows to remove the ear speaker DO NOT do it. If you do like I did you will need the earpiece sticker that is not available.
It does not show in the videos that a small black piece falls out when you remove the usb port/cable/board. My guess is they don't know where it go's, so they don't show you. The people that make the videos are the ones tying to sell the replacement parts.
Etrade did not have the front sticker they have a housing with the sticker on it. I got this. It is FAKE, it will not work. It is plastic the screw holes are not in the right spots. The heatpipe is fake it is just a sticker. You can not remove the screen sticker so it was a waste.

So have spent 300 dollar CAD. the phone is all in parts and I still need more parts. Mainly the front screen sticker.
The battery maybe wrecked because you have to pry hard to get it out because it is glued in. It is bent now. The lightest effort bent it off the start.
I have replaced many screens on other peoples non sony phones before.
Don't underestimate a screen protector, it helps and it works. Had the original z and dropped n number of times from various heights to grounds, both glass didn't even scratch or crack a bit.
