No charging after nougat update - Galaxy Note5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I applied OTA nougat update yesterday. Since then my phone won't charge even when off. It also gets very hot when connected to the charger.
When connecting to a charger that has a led in it, the light will flicker one and off repeatedly.
[update April 21]
Samsung is asking for $400 to fix the phone.
For complete disclosure, the phone was purchased from Amazon US. My interaction is with Samsung Israel. They place the responsibility on the seller (an Amazon store) instead of owning it, even though the update malware came from Samsung Mobile.

I'd suggest you save as much as possible of your stuff that you want and then do a factory reset so that there's no old apps or other stuff that's causing it.. Make sure you have OEM unlock enabled to in Developer options so you don't end up with no FRP crap.

Thanks for offering a solution. Unfortunately with the battery at zero I can't do anything on the phone.
So the first priority is getting some charge into the battery.

Do you happen to have a wireless charger? If not try another wire or even try using the usb ports on a laptop or desktop computer.

It's not a wire or port issue. Wireless charger doesn't work too. I tried different cables and chargers, nothing worked.
When connecting to a Macbook, I get a message "USB Accessories Disabled - Unplug the accessory using too much power to re-enable USB devices."
I'm guessing part of the update was a change to the circuit that guards the battery. Perhaps an aftermath of the exploding Note 7 fiasco.
I'll talk with Samsung next week and will update here.

When booting into recovery, I get the following screens:
Installing system update
No command
After these screens the device goes into the recovery menu.
Anyone know of a way to disable charging on USB? If I could get the USB working I could flash again.
Also, is it safe to flash to stock Marshmallow after the (failed) Nougat update?

Hi I have the same problem. Did you happen to find a solution?

Maybe it needs to charge. Plug it into a wall socket.
Well I need to get the phone back up and running and the bootloader as well as the charging program is missing. I have a brand new battery for it. It is fully charged.

The problem was when I originally tried to flash it... it failed due to dead battery... WORST MISTAKE EVER... so I purchased a fastboot cable and tried to get the phone up and running but it was mounting the device in windows as OMAP4430 so I tried again last month and I got it back up and running with the latest version of android... the one that came with the device.
I AM SO ANGRY AT THIS PHONE.. IT WILL NOT EVEN BOOT IN TO ANDROID!

I'm having a similar issue with trying to fix a friend's phone that only displays the "Dual Core" logo when plugged into the computer. The computer itself doesn't appear to register that the phone is connected so doesn't show up in device manager that I can see. Plugging into a wall outlet doesn't light the device screen up, only the computer (Win7 box). I believe he dunked the bootloader, and it's bricked, but I'm trying to fix it anyway. Anyone reading this, I would appreciate any useful pointers or suggestions. Thanks all.

That occurred to me as well, I'm going to first see if the local Verizon store can charge it (or even replace it) for free. My friend actually did manage to score a power cable, but I'm not convinced yet that that is what I need (since I'm getting nowhere with it). I'd like to eliminate the battery as an issue if possible first before spending any money.

Verizon will not replace battery for free, if phone is more than 1 year old
The software that charges the battery is very easily corrupted, can be reflashed with firmware, but need a charged battery.
The TBH factory cable adaptor will power the phone direct from usb port, no battery is even needed, then firmware can be flashed and charging will work again.

I've actually gotten a battery in the past for an obsolete phone, but out of packaging and possibly used. My friend acquired a power cable (not sure from where) which just lights the screen as described above (with or without battery installed), but turns off as soon as I unplug it, so I have my suspicions about the usability of his cable. I struck out with the local Verizon store, so will just order the wall charger and charge the battery next. Crossing fingers... Thanks for supplying that link tho, that's the one I will use.
Follow-up: It took 3 weeks to receive that battery charger from Singapore of all places, but it worked. I didn't charge it up all the way, maybe just to 50%. The phone with battery immediately was able to boot into fastboot. Using rsdlite and motohelper installed, I had the phone back to fully functional within 15 minutes.

Great, thanks for the update.

One thing you should check.
Is the battery bulged on one or both sides?
If you lay on a table, does it spin like a top?
If so battery should be replaced.

No, the battery was/is fine (in fact, fully charged afterwards it lasted 2 days on standby). I think my friend probably was just trying to flash a new ROM and didn't notice he had such a low charge. Still not sure why the cable he bought didn't provide the necessary charge to recover, but that's what you get sometimes with aftermarket equipment I guess. Still, it's good to know that is a possible solution for someone else down the road.

Serious charging problem!

Guys please help me out I am in serious problem.
I have an international M7 with developer ROM on it. Till yesterday everything was 100% fine. But this morning when I tried to charge it, it gave me an error saying use a supported charger. I have been using the original charger from the beginning. And since then no other chargers are able to charge it. No error message no nothing.
When I try to charge it while powered off it shows "charging" for 1 second and powers down, then again powers back on saying "charging" and this keeps going on n on.
I tried using an OTG flash drive and its working perfectly. Device is powering on without any problem what so ever. Its just not charging. Its also not getting detected by computer.
Please help me out!
:crying:
Interestingly enough, I had this problem last night.
The first time I plugged it in, I got the error about using a supported charger but i simply just unplugged it and replugged it in and everything was fine.
So... I don't really have a solution, sorry.
I'm on InsertCoin 4.0.2 on a Dev Edition M7

Its not charging or even getting detected on a PC as already mentioned and HTC CC is charging me 150$ for repairing :crying:
In fact they are charging the first 100$ just for opening the device. Huh...
Cant factory reset, very little battery is left so big risk. Is there no one else who has faced this problem ?
Again reminding you, OTG does still work...

The OTG still working has nothing to do with charging
their are 4 conncetions inside that usb port you need 2 of them to charge the other 2 for data. You say you cleaned the port.
Define cleaned the port.
I had a Samsung (same microusb port) stop being seen by PC or charging. I shut the phone off and used a paper towel folded to a point on one end, and dipped in rubbing alcohol. I inserted this into the port and let it set about 1 min. Removed it and folded the towel again and inserted the dry end. After 3 attempts at this the charger and data ports all work again. give it a shot.

note 5 - USB not recognised and it never fast charge

Hello I have a note 5 - SM-N920C on stock M 6.0.1
about two months the phone stop fast charging and doesn't get recognised by the pc
the thing I tried :-
* try different USB cables ( 2 came with the phone - 2 new once )
* factory rest ( twice with wpie chashe )
* change the charger
I wanted to test other stock Roms but I can't get it recognised by odin .
and I have 2 note 5 all the cables work fine on the other one .

I seem to have same issue here.
I have the Note 5 from tmo(SM-N920T)
Baseband - N920TUVU2DPD1
Stock - 6.0.1
You have the exact same issues i've had. I also had issues where when i would have the phone plugged in ( to the wall adapter ) and rebooted it, it would think its a media device like a computer where it could share files and stuff... Also take like 5 hours to charge from 20%
Here I'll make this fix SUPER EASY..
1. Download Package Disabler PRO - I dont think it has to be the pro version but i bought it a long time ago
2. Search for 'power'
3. Disable 'com.sec.app.TransmitPowerService''
4. Reboot
I would add screenshots but as i dont have 10 posts im unable to post screenshots or links to the app in the playstore.
The wife's phone started this Saturday after updating. Also, hers beeps and has the charging blue wave as if she plugged the cable in. While actually charging, it disconnects and starts charging constantly.
The beep and blue wave is normal. The charging and no charging sounds like a faulty cord that's not making good connection
The beep and blue wave happens when she is not plugged in. Phone just sitting there not being charged or touched. We thought at first it was a bad cable, but we've tried several. Even does it on the wireless pad. Therefore I'm not sure it's the port. I think it's software related.
Have you tried safe mode?

Did try safe mode and a factory reset. Sprint store I brought it to tried several cables and another factory reset with no luck so they ordered her a replacement. They weren't too interested in figuring it out. In fact, 3 other people came in with various issues and were just given the number to make an insurance claim without even looking at the phone.
I disabled that apk abd it detects all my fast chargers as fast ones. Where it didn't. If i re-enable it it stops workin
might be hardware issue, Try Wireless charger and see if it charges fast. if it charges good with wireless charger then you have to change you CHARGING PORT.

Had the same exact issue on a refurbished unit . Old note didn't do it, but had to exchange it due to adhesive glue coming up in upper left corner. I did multiple resets and finally went with the option of fresh install as not to import back my apps. It hasn't replicated our issue in the last few hours. I am hoping that takes care of it.
Did you by chance get a random gear VR screen prompting you to download the app and what not? I did and read others had the same issue and only way to get this to stop is to download it and then create an account, reboot and viola it solved it.
Stuff is crazy, love the phone but have had more issues with it over even El cheapo phones....

I got similar problem... now after 10 days I just can not go with this.
my youtube problem.
https://youtu.be/payi2IuJhdI
My NOTE 5 is thinking that is charging all the time. It drives me crazy.
With the USB cable it charges 1 time out of 20 and on a random day. I had to charge it via wireless. It wakes up all the time and can not use UBS.
Strange part is, that I can use my USB micro stick with my root and custom ROM. But that is it. No ODIN, no tranfer files.......
Did everything except change the USB port (it is on it's way). ( that will be my last resort)
ANY THOUGHTS.
I have a feeling that water damage was somewhere in there. (been driving with my bike on a rainy day and it looks like it got a little wet in my upper front pocket.
mine recognises fast charge very randomly. before it happened rarely but now it never shows fast charging with the original cable. the only thing that helped me was ordering a third party cable and using the original ac plug. let me know if that helps to any of you guys!
Ugh. N920a mine started this in March after having it maybe 3months. I called att and told them to send me a new one the other day. Unit arrived this morning. My opinion is its a bad USB port. This imho is the weakest link in Samsung devices-- this POS antiquated USB crap.
The thing would cycle CHARGING -- DISCONNECT, over and over. Wiggling the cord would affect the condition. Fast charge happened 1 out of 20 attempts.
I'll let you know how long the new unit lasts-- my most recent purchase is a wireless charger because, as stated this ***t is bound to happen again.
Unbelievable. My phone was totally fu**d. Than I sad I will fix it my self, so I bought the USB board and waited to get it. In the mean time I used it as normally, just wireless charging and that's it.
But after two weeks, the phone was getting a little better, not fixed, but due to custom ROM and a few tweaks, it did not turn on itself all the time.
But after I played quite a few games, (hitman) the phone did heat up all the time, and that my friends FIXed my problem. NOW the phone works as before the moister get to it.
I have my NOTE 5 back, yee.
SO when you have moister problem - play games.
Hey guys,
I had this exact problem - no more fast charging, no USB OTG or recognized by computer after
upgrade to Marshmallow. Tried multiple cords, different computers (Mac, and Windows), etc.
I sent it in for repair to Samsung and they 'fixed' it and are in the process of shipping it back
I put 'fix' in quotes because the repair tracking says it was solved, but I haven't received it back yet to
test. It should be coming in tomorrow.
Quick charge and USB issues have been fixed! IF you're still under warranty, I'd highly recommend sending it in.

Help: Not charging

My model is F8132, 39.2.A.0.374.
Now the charging problem is driving me crazy: it's not charging with any wall charger. More precisely:
1. When power-on and connected to wall charger, NOTHING happens.
2. When power-off and connected to wall charger, red light pops out for a second and disappears, "SONY" pops out for seconds, and then the battery sign comes out WITHOUT charging.
3. The phone IS charging when connected to the computer in any case.
4. In fastboot mode when connected to the wall charger, IT'S charging.
I have to tried to use the Companion to repair, and to use flashtool to flash the firm that I have been using, both don't work. I have not unlocked the bootloader, or rooted the phone.
To my knowledge, it seems that the kernel is not working well when it is supposed to recognise the wall charger, but I hesitate to flash a rooted kernel since I never do anything crazy.
Please tell me what to do! GREAT THANKS!

Not yet. But why should it work? I have flashed the same firmware, the ROM should be absolutely rewritten, and if the kernel is not completely renewed, why should it be renewed when I flash other versions?
So now I have two conjectures, one is that the kernel is hurt which will not be completely rewritten when we flash the device in usual ways, the other is that something is hurt beneath the kernel level.
But anyway, I'm not an IT guy, and I really need experts now.

If there are some blocks of the storage where the kernel is that are not completed rewritten and/or that are damage, it is very weird or lucky for you that you can still boot and it messed only with that very specific part for charging, and not some other part.

So if you can still boot I would discard that the kernel is damaged... It might be some weird bug with your very specific phone and that very specific kernel, so to rule that out you need to change change the kernel flashing another firmware version, and with a different kernel if it is still not charging, then I would say it is something other than the kernel, maybe some specific hardware part with some code inside that helps charging the phone. If it is hardware related you would need to take to sony.
Bur as I said, it seems software related as you can charge with a computer.

I have the same problem, x peria xp SOV33 cannot fill properly and very long when the phone is active, it doesn't even charge when the cellphone turns off.
I can not get into flash & quick boot mode.
replacing a similar charger cable and adapter does not help at all.
after a few days I made my own charger cable.
combining usb cable with utp cable. (I mean making a single cable charger, not a fiber).
I'm connected to the fast charging adapter version.
and this works.
but the problem is the device can not enter flashmode & fastboot.
I do not guarantee how this will work for all.
the risk of hardware damage is borne by each

Hi, I have a Sony Xperia X compact that has suddenly stopped charging using either the dedicated wall charger. It will charge using my external battery pack, but when it is plugged into the wall charger it will not charge. At first I assumed it was the charger itself, as the micro USB cable was obviously working with my battery pack. The charger I bought was also a genuine Sony one, but this didn't work either, so both this and the original one was used on my husband’s Nokia Lumina 520 which also has a micro USB port for charging and it charges that fine. I then got another micro USB lead and that didn't work either, so I tried my husband’s charger on my phone and again, no charging activity.
It's a weird one, as I don’t understand why it won’t recognise a wall charger but is fine with my batter pack and of not it doesn’t recognise a computer either.

Battery suddenly will not charge anymore

Hi , my XZ2 is about one and a half years old. No problem whatsoever until this morning. I plugged in the charge cable, I got the message "charging" but it will not charge. I checked the cable and charging device (worked with another phone) so it is in the phone or in the connection. Cleaned connection (woorden tooth pick), nothing helped. Any suggestions? Battery level is now at 5 % so I can not do a lot anymore...
Have you tried different charging brick? You cleaned the port but I'd recommend using a cotton bud and isopropyl alcohol to clean it from corrosion.
If it won't help that is probably the fault of charging port itself. I had issues with charging when it would randomly stop charging and replacing port itself worked and it isn't doing that anymore (I replaced it around 2 months ago).
Edit: Also try charging the phone when it is turned off.

Thanks, I tried, but the alcohol did not work either. (And yes, I tried different brick and cable and also with different phone). I will have battery replaced, I guess that helps. Thanks anyway.
Try doing a hard reboot then powering down the phone and see if that works.

Thanks, I tried, but the alcohol did not work either. (And yes, I tried different brick and cable and also with different phone). I will have battery replaced, I guess that helps. Thanks anyway.

I recommend getting charging port on aliexpress or ebay idk, it costs around 10-12$, I'm pretty sure changing the battery won't help much - considering it's not a motherboard fault. Also, update us if anything will change, I'm very curious
I will update yo uhere when I know more , thanks
I had the same issue, when I used Lineage OS 18. To solve it pressed up volume button and power button and waited until 3 vibrations.

A hard reboot?
I promised I would let you know... I changed my mind at a certain moment and decided to check if the defect was covered by the Sony-guarantee. It was. So I sent it in, and after two or three weeks I got it back. Entire new mother board. So I think this was a real physical defect which could not be solved by your kind suggestions [thanks].
quite similar to my case, though for me the cable actually melting and i can't charge it using normal usb c cable anymore
nowadays it's either via wireless, or via usb C to usb C → usb A adapter

Sounds like a known mobo power controller failure.
Press Sony for a free repair... lean on them hard if you must. Keep calling until someone there does the right thing.
If you're lucky the first call will get it.
Free repair, free replacement or a full refund check, don't settle for less!
Lol, I've played hardball with Sony and won*
*hammered a few people in the process, oops.

Yea, I switched to IodeOS based on lineageOS 17, until march update, i had no issues, so either I have very bad luck, or something is buggy in software.

Not software... firmware which is much worse.
Flash it back to see what's what.
When I have a stable OS that's doing what I want, I leave it be.
Updates, destroyer of worlds...

Yeah, i did it once, after i bricked it, but i see, i will have to do it second time. Or at least i need to install another ungoogled OS, not based on lineage.

Google is a menace, no doubt.
Currently I keep Google Play Services disabled most of the time.
Try charging it with the phone powered off and see if that helps.
Yes, it did help, but fastcharging seems to be disabled, when phone is powered off.

That's strange.
I don't think the firmware flashes the power controller chipset... or if it's flashable.
My 10+ fast charging is acting erratic. Tried everything except a factory reset. May be the battery... fun isn't it?
I wanted to boot TWRP and bricked phone while doing it. We will see if swiss firmware will change anything
Actually it's south american, but charging works without problem, as last time
