Can age of device be determined from box? - Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can it be determined that a device in an unopened box would predate os 5.3.2.1? Looking on eBay, I see two different box styles - one with "Device Color" in lower right corner and one with "Memory Size and Device Color" in the upper right corner. Any idea which would be older? Is there any other way to tell, like by serial number?

Thanks, but I'm trying to buy an unopened one on eBay that would come with 5.3.1 or earlier.

No way as far as I know. Maybe ask for a screenshot of the version settings? Or ask for the version? They do have to be powered on, as sd_shadow said.

I don't know if the sticker is actually any indication, but I just recently purchased one from Amazon that has the sticker in the upper right corner with the memory size and device color. It came with 5.3.1. I just rooted it yesterday. Also not sure if this helps, but there's a lot code on the sticker at the bottom of the box (LOT CODE: M645). Maybe tablets with the older OS come from the same lot/batch of tablets.

Unboxing N7 from Google Play Question..

Ok...
Just got my N7 .. but...
When I tried to open it, I found two seals on each side of the box, looks like someone sliced the first layer seal then put the second on on top of it.. ( Cant upload pics on work place...)
Finally open the box... my N7 screen was on..... and the body is super hot..
is this normal........
or I am just been paranoid

Something isn't right.
You should call support and have it replaced.
Maybe they opened all of them and squeezed the left sides and sealed them again...

Weird, mine was just delivered and my box was opened and retaped too....
When you went to login for the first time did the email field already have your address filled in? Mine said welcome Pete and had my gmail address... creeped me the F out
Oh and mine looks like it was taped over also... Ordered from Play Store
Maybe they updated the software to 4.1.1 for you and then repackaged them?
When you pre ordered there was an option to link your Google account to the device. You probably didn't uncheck the box as it was set to default.

Yep! I'm sure they opened them to put in our info and update them. I checked and there were no updates available so I'm assuming that's what it was. I'm not concerned- it's in perfect condition, had a charge on it, looks completely untouched, and came from Google this way.
You have got to be f$%#ing kidding me. The actually opened the boxes to do that? I had always assumed they just were going to recognize the serial number of the device.
Well, we finally have our answer to our 15000 post thread. They really were that stupid. Wow.
Ooo this is odd, i wanna hear more about these opened boxes.
OMG !!! I did check that option when I preordered from the Google Play store . Just bcos I thought they would just do that before putting it in the box...crap..mine is probably opened as well. sign...

My info was already in before I connected to any wifi. They would have had to have had access to the device to do that. Seeing as these were made by ASUS and not Google, the only way for Google to put our info in and update them would be for them to open them up. Not a big deal at all.

Great, I also checked that box, so someone at Google got to play with my device before I did. God I hope his hands were clean

OK... tried to get hold on Google reps, but after listened to the music for 10 min, I gave up.. need to work...
Yes, when I opened the box, the system already had my email address.. and said welcome xxx, that was creepy
And my battery was 40% left
the system still on 4.1, a few mins later got the 4.1.1 update.
If this re-taped boxes are not coincidences, then I'll keep my N7, and it is really dumb they have to OPEN box to link account and machine together....
At least I hope one good thing is they were checking the device for me lol

just got my N7 - how to check screen issues?

i dont see any screen lift (32gb CB0K) ... how to check color problems, pixels, etc?

No. i said i dont see any physical problems. but i was asking about problems like checking dead pixels, checking that colors are right, checking other things that maybe require installing some apps for that, etc.
There are a couple of apps on the play store that can check (or help to check) for dead pixels apparently. I've not bothered with them and I just put a white screen on the N7 and looked at it. If I cant see a dead pixel, then I cant see the point of worrying about anything that my eyes are unable to notice.
All I did was
(1) Check the S/N so I could tell it was not a returned old version
(2) See if I could see any scratches or dents or any physical damage
(3) Turned it on and checked the screen had no dead pixels
(4) Checked for screen lift on the left
(5) Checked for light bleed
(6) Checked for any rippling along the sides
(7) Checked the OS version
(8) Checked the speaker was okay using the free film
That was enough for me. I'm a bit OCD, but I'm happy enough that its not got any obvious or reported issues.
Turn upp the brightness check for lightbleed in a dark room and check so that the screen hasn't lifted from the glass. Other than that there's nothing special you need to check in my opinion.

How do you know that your Nexus 7 is real thing??? PLEASE HELP, I HAVE ONLY 2 HOURS

Just as the title says, PLEASE HELP I ONLY HAVE 2 HOURS
My assumptions :
- Is the welcome screen can only show once you got it & we cannot see it again?
- When we open the case, it will leave traces ?
What do you know? How can I know that the Nexus 7 I want to buy is real? ( I want to buy it from another person, he said that he buy it from Lazada & want to sell it because he thought that it was 3g )
1 Thing to do is to check under settings, About and check all the software.
Chances are if its a fake device, it won't have standard software installed.
Check VERY Carefully, as fake software often mimicks the naming etc, but is slightly different.
Also, check all the outer body etc, to see if you can see any different things from what your used it, such as no logo etc?
Pop the back off like you said, check the internals to see if they match the Nexus 7 original.
Popping the back is fairly easy, and if done properly you wont be able to tell its been done.

Seems to be a real one. By judging the kernel version, date and the FCC things. Also you can try to unlock its bootloader.

Why would that have anything to do with not having a serial number? It comes on a tag on the device. If it is removed I would be suspicious that it is stolen.
That little sticker that's in the bottom? That was the first thing I took off when I opened it. I mean why would you put a SN on a sticker? That's no indicator if it were stolen.
Edit: I stick edit to the box, but yeah. If anyone else is like me and does not like superfluous stuck things in their devices, and they would have removed it too.

Second hand for a device like this is kinda shady to begin with. It being bogus is a risk you take regardless of anything considering its been used. serial numbers can be faked, especially stickers which can be taken off one and placed onto another. I left my sticker on just because....eventually it peeled off on its own so that shoots that idea down. You can very easily package a loaf of bread into a nexus box and until ya open it youll never know. best bet would be to make sure whatever service your using has an airtight return & buyer protection policy.
Honestly I don't think there are a lot of faked N7's(if any). It's not like you would buy beats headphones (cause there's a sh*t load of faked beats headphones).Faking tablets and phones is much "harder" and you would definitely figure out quickly if its faked or not mostly because they run outdated software.
Sorry for my bad english

Someone gets it. Yes, my sticker is still on my N7, primarily because there's no real reason to remove it and because it is in a case where the sticker is protected and not visible. I save the boxes that any of my gadgets come in until they are no longer under warranty. Sometimes even longer as resale is better on a device that is in the factory container. For a device this new I would be very wary of buying one used that the owner had disposed of the box and serial number sticker without much thought. At the least, it shows carelessness, at the worst, they could be trying to hide something.
OP seems suspicious to me.
cant quite tack it down, but something seems odd...
Google Gravity
A real N7 will bounce if you toss it on the ground real hard. Newer N7's have Google Gravity installed. Basically it has internal gyros and sensors that detect motion and reverse gravity in the event of a fall to prevent damage.
hahaha, I liked the last response better.

[Q] Serial # Moto X 2nd gen.

purchased a 2nd gen. a black Moto X with resin back on monday (AT&T), kind of decided to get the black/black leather back. not 3 hours later i dropped it on the concrete (first cell phone i drop since my first one in 2000) screen shattered, device only shows 1 or 2 lines top of display. still responds to my voice.
so since i have insurance we (wife & i) have been on the phone for a total of 7 hours, finally got some progress and Asurion wants to ship a white device with resin back, their statement "the device is insured, not the color" and AT&T backs that statement, upon the question ship white can we exchange in store, no that is not an option (guess the stores don't want "like new" phones.) so we are back to exchanging it via Motorola, similar pricing but here is the issue, the original box has everything like the IMEI, ICCID and a bunch more. Motorola wants the serial but the device does not turn on, they actually referred us back to AT&T for the serial number. AT&T gave us stupid advise like remove the battery, clearly the reps are clueless. look on the box, dug we did, look on the SIM tray, which only has IMEI.
got the phone recognized on my Mac but unsure if at all being able to get it that way. is there a way (that Motorola and also AT&T does not know) to get the serial number of the device, like i said i responds and i see lines but that's all.
please help.... getting desperate and frustrated dealing with 3 companies that seem clueless, AT&T, Motorola & Asurion.

thanks for the prompt reply... i have received a exchange wit home, but not too much hassle for the Moto X 1st gen. i had a scuff on the screen. anyway. my wife's going to call Motorola again tomorrow morning, i am just livid and should not speak to any of the 3 mentioned companies. will definitely follow up here what happens with the call to Motorola. (i actually work for Apple and we use mainly the serial #, but we could use the IMEI if the customer does not have the serial...) i was dumbfounded that Motorola refers to AT&T for serial. (from now of on the first thing i will do is get the serial ;-} again thanks for the reply, will look for that thread.

I forgot to add screen fractures are rampant for the X2. A case is a must.
If you need the serial number plug the phone in to PC open command prompt and type adb devices. It will show you the device serial number. However you would of had to turned on USB debugging.

If you need the serial number, just boot the phone into the bootloader then run fastboot devices if you have the android sdk setup.

4xxx serial US Chromecasts in the wild

This might be old news as I haven't had a chance to visit much recently, but 4xxx serial Chromecasts are in the wild in the US.
There are 4xxx serial units with the older packaging (got some 41xx) as well as newer packaging.
Haven't had a chance to check if they're rootable via HubCap yet, but I'm guessing they might not be.
Newer packaging has a different seal sticker as well as different front art, and also has "Mfg date" sticker.
Didn't pick up the newer packaging ones, I think I have enough at the moment.

I was able to pick up one in Great Bend, KS at Wal-Mart with serial #4819. Has the same packaging as shown in your pictures and I got it for $25, was near the checkouts near a pretty long row of Blu-Ray/DVD's. They had fifty or so still left and I saw more in the electronics section.
The serial number makes no difference to rooting, it's the shipped firmware version.
My chromecast I got months ago is 4113 and rooted no issues at all, this thread is pointless.

The second part is what I wanted to know. Thanks, though yours is probably the "old" packaging, yes?
Considering I started the Rootable Serial Numbers thread... there is a bit of method behind my madness.
The point here is - if Google has revamped the packaging, likely they will start shipping a non-rootable firmware with it, and then we go back to "Okay, with what serial number did the newer (unrootable) firmware start shipping with?" just like the old days.

My packaging is the same as your picture, same bottom, same man of steel on the back, only difference is it doesn't have the row of apps on the front, the text is slid down the chromecast pic at the top, but that's probably just a uk thing.

Sounds like the rev 2 packaging, with lens flare on the Chromecast.
The original packaging didn't have lens flare on the Chromecast on the front, Man of Steel on the back (it was a baby) nor did it have the Hulu Plus icon.
Rev 2 packaging shortly preceded the end of units shipping with the first FlashCast-rootable firnware (build 12072).
Save for refurbished/RMA/used units, most/all units with the rev 2 packaging should have HubCap-rootable firmware builds.
So now we wait to see if history repeats itself and units with non-HubCap-able firmware (build 19085+) follow or coincide with this new packaging.
