Sprint November 2017 OTA Update Battery Drain - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions & Answers

I received the Sprint OTA update 'N950USQU2BQJB' a few days ago here in California which carried a security patch and Google Play Services update version 11.7.46 which has been terrible on my battery and particularly Pixel XL & OnePlus users as well as other devices according to online reports.
Have you updated to these versions and seen a dip In your battery life like many others have?
And If so, have you seen any difference in performance after updating your device with Google's latest security patch update 'N950USQS2BQK3' which has started to roll out to Sprint customers today (12/04/17)?
Will this fix the issue of battery drain Sprint users have been experiencing in the past several weeks in your opinion?
Thanks.

Android KitKat 4.4.4 update causes problems on the Motorola Moto X

http://www.loadthegame.com/2014/07/22/android-kitkat-4-4-4-update-causes-problems-motorola-moto-x/
Updates are designed to fix past issues, at least in theory. Sometimes however, things do go wrong. Such was the case with the Android KitKat 4.4.3 update on the Nexus line, and history seems to be repeating itself now with the Android KitKat 4.4.4 update too. This time however, the affected phone seems to be the Motorola Moto X. Apparently, multiple Moto X users have posted complains on the Moto X boards about poor battery life following the KitKat 4.4.4 update. The firmware seems to have done more wrong than right this time around, seriously affecting the phone’s battery life.
The problems come from various sources, such as data cache problems with applications that cause additional drain, poor network signal which also affects battery life due to constant signal searching and even problems with overheating. In addition, the WiFi signal receiving seems to be affected, as well as the carrier frequencies, which all add up to considerably hit the phone’s power reserves. There are of course temporary workarounds to keep a lid on things for now, but if you’ve already upgraded to KitKat 4.4.4, you’ll likely be facing some issues that can’t really be solved until Motorola launches a new firmware version. Using Airplane Mode can help with network signal search drains, while setting your WiFi to stop connecting to weak signal networks may also be of some use.
If you haven’t updated your Moto X to the latest version of Android KitKat 4.4.4, we recommend you hold off for now. Android L is just around the corner, and it should bring some great battery management features to the Moto X, as it has a built-in battery management tool, as well as Project Volta. So far, problems have yet to appear with the Motorola Droid Maxx and Droid Ultra, which have received the same update. The Motorola Moto G and Moto E have also received Android KitKat 4.4.4, but it’s unclear if battery issues affect those models too at this time.

hmmmm.....
I don't have problems since the update. The battery seems better than 4.4.2.

IMO, battery life has never been as good on the Moto X as it was in 4.4
more of a baseband problem rather than the firmware problem?
Can you post the screen shots of the android 4.4.4 update. Also please upload the ota update zip file. Thanks in advance
Already in another thread.

No trouble for me too.
I'm using the update 4.4.4 for a week (I receive it before everyone, don't know why - my OTA file has been shared), and my battery life is BETTER than before !
Everything works fine. As every other french people reveived the update
With any new update comes growing pains. It takes a day or two and sometimes even a week before an OTA settles fully. Don't jump the gun just because your experience is bad and it's only been a few hours.

Nope! I don't remember it taking this long for the soak last time.
Last time the invites went out 1-2 days before the rollout.
I have had 3 random reboots on 4.4.4 since yesterday.
My X reboot just in the first hour after the 4.4.4 update

Are you using ART? I've been good on dalvik. But had minor issues on ART.

Sensationalism. Android L isn't right around the corner. It's months away, and it's such a large update that Motorola needs to do extensive testing with their apps and integrated system functions to maintain proper functionality.
No issues with battery life for me either. Remove apps from your phone if you start having idle drain issues, especially those with push notifications, as those are handled by Android OS.
i've had zero reboots but i have had worse battery wife while the device is in use, but much improved battery life while the device is "sleeping". however i have had consistent wifi issues. not sure if its my router or the device specifically, but if i turn off/on wifi, it seems to resolve itself.
I'm having them
I'm having the battery life issue, and its annoying :crying:
before, it used to stay literally a full day, and now it will start beeping by sunset.
I'm seriously thinking about downgrading it back to 4.4.2.
what do you think guys?!! should I?!!!!

Made the switch back to 5.1.1. Could not be happier.

Ahhh what a relief!! Downgraded back to lollipop and is sure yummier than marshmallow which is in my opinion samsung didn't optimize for note 5 in order to force us all to note 7 (7 instead of 6 and u expect a huge leap forward but i am not buying this new device for an extra 500 mah battery and an iris scanner that's a gimmick feature at best. waiting for 8 running nougat) .
With marshmallow I had all sorts of bugs
huge battery consumption, and a general heat issue that I couldn't figure out despite multiple resets
I hated the phone period.
This downgrade made me remember why I bought it in the first place.
All day battery with 4 to 5 hours SOT
on gsam battery i get like 1 to 4 percent max decline in battery max per hour on heavy usage vs 6 to 12 on marshmallow despite running greenify and activating aggressive doze
25 degree celsius battery on 5.1.1 vs north of 29 on marshmallow
Very smooth ui. No heat.
I didn't switch to another rom because I didn't want to mess with my warranty or tip knox as i keep my phones in mint conditions to sell them when i buy new ones
after rolling back to 5.1.1., the device started downloading marshmallow on its own despite disabling "check for updates manually" in system updates so i bought package disabler pro from play store and disabled service updates (there are 2 of them and i disabled both)
the only drawback i can see is the sensitivity of the fingerprint sensor, missing 2 to 3 attempts per day vs non miss at all on M but i can live with that.

Firmware Update 9.0.0.188 Middle East

Hai. Any one received 9.0.0.188 firmware update? noticed any impact on battery life?
No impact on battery
.188 only security patch update
What impact?
Battery is awesome, unbelievable actually with .188, I have 68% left with 3 hours 2 mins SOT
I'm still on the .183 update, do you have a screenshot of the changelog? Just curious to know what's new? Thanks
Greetings, the latest 188 update, because my device is still like this. Why do you still know that the March update did not come?

Do I want this update or should I keep it blocked?

Do I want this update or should I keep it blocked and permanently block future updates? In my past experiences they make my phones slower and eventually unusable. Thanks
I haven't updated in about 6 months, battery life is still amazing. I really can't see these updates helping anything.. I don't need a new version of android and I'm pretty happy with the camera. Would be interesting to see how much it affects performance and battery "new update"

I'm on threw newest firmware and I have no issues since I've been updating past the first Pie release.

I mainly upgrade because I can get the latest security patches. Besides I also have a pixel 3A that gets better update frequency than my note 9. plus I like having an unlockable bootloader to reverse updates if they get screwed up.

I haven't updated, since the December 1, 2018 security patch for Oreo 8.1.
Battery is outstanding, especially over my S9 with Pie.
I think phones work best on their original operating system.
Security patches? Meh. They probably cover old threats anyways.

Fam, there's been 5 major threats found this year alone. And they were exploited on a small scale this year.
There's no such thing as original operating system by the way. Not even slightly when it comes to Android. If you want a "original" Feeling, probably Pixel devices would be the best bet. It better yet, if it must be Note 9, strip all none essential items from a rom with hopes that there's no hyperlinking.
This part is not to ragg on older software, but when updates are made in good faith, it is to improve on previous versions of said software.??
Most of the time... Placebo ??

By "original OS", I meant the version that originally came on the phone, when it was released / purchased.
Apologies, for not being more clear.

I know what you meant, and it's a great thought to have as a consumer, but unfortunately it's just a placebo. To be fair, I'm pretty sure it has happened where the software a device shipped with was the best for it to be on for a long time. For me that was probably the Nexus 6P. But that phone was doomed from the get go.
I don't know. I'm glad you guys are happy with the software you're on, but I urge all of you to just update to get rid of those nasty vulnerabilities that your OS versions have. I don't think it's worth the trade off.
Performance isn't bad at all on Pie, but that's where phone use is relative for each person. Butchieboy get crazy SOT, I barely crack 4 hours on a lite day of use. Most likely due to my crappy coverage area and what I'm actually using my phone for throughout the day.

Oh OK, it didn't seem like it.
You were going off.
I appreciation your passion and warnings!
I think I understand the risks of what I'm doing.
I do have an S9 on Pie that I'm checking out and hope to get it on the Android 10 Beta to test drive. 10 seems to be more to my liking with a true dark mode.
If so, I may just let our Note 9s update to Android 10 Quindim
There has been a history of companies, namely apple, of slowing down devices as they age in an effort to 'save battery' or some junk. I think its to force you to upgrade your phone. The battery is the easiest way for them to age phones out to make sure we keep buying new ones. This can be pushed faster through software updates, beside the natural degradation of the battery over time.

I'm geteing 7 to 8 hours of SOT on my Note 9 on Oreo. I'm used to using a phone with an outdated security patch. I bought an S5 back in 2016 which came with Mashmallow and who's last update was all the way back to January 2018. The security patch is still 8/1/17. IWas forced to ditch it when 2 attempts by Sasmung to cure the screen flickering didn't help. Heck I install APK's on it and no viruses.
If you are using any online banking apps then I would advise that you install any updates onto your device for safety. As they will plug up any security flaws in the OS.
In my opinion it is extremely important to keep your devices up to date with the latest security patches. Now days most of our digital lives are stored on our phones. You wouldn't leave your front door wide open. Don't do the same with your phone.
I always keep my phone up to date so that all the security issues can be fixed and sometimes I get updates for the camera too.

Going to buy this phone tomorrow, any issues with it?

I'm going to buy the Moto G6 to replace a phone which recently stopped working.
Are there any major issues I should know about the phone before I commit?
Yes, absolutely. The phone comes with Android 8 Oreo, then is later updated to Android 9 Pie. That Pie update pretty much ruins the phone. It becomes very laggy and non-responsive. There is a 56-page thread on the Lenovo/Motorola forum on this problem. It appears Motorola is doing nothing to fix the problem, or even acknowledge it.
It's possible that doing a "Rescue" using the Lenovo Moto Smart Assistant will fix the problem, but there haven't been enough reports from those who've tried that to be sure about the result. I don't think anyone should buy the G6 at this point. If you have to have a Motorola phone, the G7 would probably be a safer option. But consider buying another brand.

One month with mine, so far so good. Excellent battery and decent game performance with October 1st patch.
I decided to get the Moto X Force. It's like 32 GB more storage, 21 MP camera, and dual SIM for the same price point...
... and I'm getting a 2-year warranty just in case it's a lemon.

It's been everyone's hope that this would work. Did you use the LMSA app to do the flashing, or something else?

I have just unboxed two G6 to prepare them for family members. I've gone through all the available OTA-Updates without doing anything else with the phone before.
Now it's sitting with Android 8.0.0 and security patch level September 2018 and it is claiming that this is the latest SW available.
Is there anything special to do in order to get the further updates?
That's very interesting information. I believe all the US G6 phones have been provided updates to Android 9 Pie, but I don't know about the European models. I guess there is a chance that Motorola has stopped upgrading to Pie in view of all the problems many have had as a result. For the US phones, all the updates were provided automatically, one at a time, and I believe the latest one is the October, 2019, update.
OK, Motorola's support told me that I have to install a SIM card to see all the further updates.
I have throwed in my own SIM and then I was able to go to a whole bunch of further updates ending up with Android 9 and October 2019 patch level as expected.
Now I am curious whether or not I am able to reproduce the widely reported lagginess...
I ordered this phone for my gf's xmas present today, she's looking forward to it and overdue for an upgrade. I never had any complaints with motorola phones and previously owned a moto g4. IMO they are still the best budget smartphones today. I always update new phones out of box to the latest software and then factory reset to avoid any possible glitches. And if my OCD kicks in I'll do factory reset twice lol, never had any software issues/lags after that. Some dislike the logo at the bottom of the phone, I actually like it. Already saw like 4 or 5 reviews for this phone on youtube including the pie update, so far it's everything I expected until it arrives.

I've been watching threads on G6 lag for awhile. I'm looking forward to your update. Based on what you've heard from Motorola regarding the need to install a SIM to get the latest updates, I'm wondering if lag problems are related to the carrier you're using. I'm using Sprint, and I'm experiencing lag.

Multiple people have reported that factory resets -- there are evidently a couple different ways to do it -- have improved the lag problem but that it returns after a short time. I've yet to see a report that confirms a factory reset has "solved" the lag problem. I'm hoping I just missed it.
Also, just to counter your experience in case others are interested, I had a G4 too. It developed a hardware problem after less than 2 years and wouldn't play any audio. I discarded it for the G6 I have now and, after less than two years, it's been all but ruined by the Android 9 update.
I'm really hopeful to see confirmation here or elsewhere that there is a definitive "fix" for the lag issue on this phone.

I bought the G4 for my mom, kept it stock and updated for 2 years never had any lag or hardware issues, still runs like OOB experience and runs perfect today. Forgot to mention another Motorola that I still have in excellent/like new condition, my FAVORITE phone of all time and wish they can make a replica with today's specs....my Nexus 6. Damn I miss that phone, trying out different roms, painting my front facing speaker grills with glow in the dark neon colors lol, using it for VR, it was impossible to brick and now it just sits in a shoe box with my other spare phones. All my phones are kept in military grade cases with screen protectors can't speak for hardware issues. I'll let you know how it goes after getting the G6 and setting it up with the latest software update.

I'm glad your experience has been better than mine. For the record, I re-flashed the firmware on my phone yesterday using LMSA. It's been less than a full day so far, but I can report that the phone is running like new. Of course, re-flashing does a factory reset and there are numerous settings that won't back up, so there is a fair bit of work to do to get the phone running the way it was. Also, I did a backup using LMSA, but after the re-flash, I couldn't find that backup with LMSA. Fortunately, I also backed up to the cloud and was able to restore everything that could be restored.

I am in Germany and in order to get all the updates I have inserted a SIM from Deutsche Telekom. After the last update package (the whole process took a hell of a lot of individual updates and reboots) I have done a full factory reset as well. Now the phones are provisioned for my kids. I am sure they will complain if the devices should become slower with time and more and more games installed.
Got the phone, did OTA updates without sim card and after 2 hours later it's running the latest software version 9.0 (October 2019). Did a factory reset/clear cache through recovery mode, set the phone back up and I loaded back all the apps, everything is running smooth so far, no complaints yet.
