Note 8 Charging Issue - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

Ok folks, buckle up. This is a weird one. So, my phone is in perfect condition, I've never dropped it, it's never been in or near liquid. About four or five days ago, when I was about to plug it in, I received the "moisture detected" message. Well that was impossible, because I had it on my desk the entire time, and there has been no liquid anywhere near it. So I assumed it was a glitch, and plugged it in, only to wake up to a dead phone. I then discovered, that it WILL charge, but only if the USB-C cable is flipped a certain way, which makes no sense to me, given that they are supposed to be reversable. The OTHER insane thing I've discovered, is that it will work BOTH ways, when plugged into a tablet with a USB port. So it seems to only be doing this with wall chargers. Any ideas?

It's very obvious your phone's jack is defective, and probably shorting out causing "moisture detection" errors. Tablet even on USB3.0 mode do not have the same electric potential (aka Volts) as a wall charger. It's usually 5x5V versus 1x120V maximums for wall chargers usually. This makes sense in your situation. The jack is for lack of better words crapping out. Use your warranty rights. Other case scenario (minor chance): your USB-C cable is bad which would explain the reverse issues.
This really isn't that weird in my opinion speaking purely from a Physics level.

Well it has only shown that message once, and not again. I just thought it was odd that it WILL charge with the USB-C inserted one way, but not the other. That's what was throwing me off.

Yeah not that odd assuming the jack is damaged or the cable. As then that can change electric flux around the magnetic field of the connector randomly (not necessarily side-specific). Try another USB-C cable just to rule out the cable and file for a warranty

I have bad luck with type c plugs noticing the trap much more dirt and pocket junk in them than type bs You might a bright lite and a sewing needle or something and make sure there is no debris in the port and or cable....

I use magnetic cables just to avoid wear and lint or dust in usb port, besides, where I live the ambient is very humid

question.... are you using the original cable that came with the Note 8, if not, try that and see if you still have the problem.
The moisture detected notification could be caused by the cable or it could be a software problem, I had that issue and phone was sent in for warranty to get it fixed.
if you get the moisture error again you can still charge the phone by turning it off and then just as you switch it back on you plug in the charging cable

What adapter do you use? As in what brand magnetic tip sits in the device?

Batterty is alive, but won't charge

Well I'm at about 2% battery life, and it will not charge. I'm using my computer to charge it. Charging it from the wall hasnt worked for me for a while, not sure why.
Anyway I was wondering what it can be? I doubt my battery's dead or something is wrong with the phone... I'm sorry if this question's been answered, but I couldnt find an answer on google.
If USB charging works, but not charging with the AC adapter then the adapter is either bad, or plugged into a bad power outlet.
Nope it's neither of those because Ive tried two working AC ountlets and two warking cables. However, that's not my problem, my phone died and I can't charge it :-/
Ya so the phone died. It didn't look like it was going to charge on the USB, really weird. Anyone ever have there phone refusing to charge? While it was alive I tried to run activesync; that didn't work. So what should I do?
Btw, I've had the phone for a couple months now and I haven't had any big problems. I don't think it can be my phone failing, worst case just the battery. I've had something similar before but it fixed itself, doesn't look like thats happeneing now.
Battery
Maybe charging from the computer wasn't such a good idea. I recommend changing the battery and the charger and always be a nice boy and charge from the outlet ::- ).
I had the same thing happen to me - the connector at the bottom was broken. I had to do a return to factory. I looked (using a magnifying class) at the bottom of the phone and clearly see a crack in the connector.
It doesn't charge from the outlet.... I kinda just explained that lol

Hmm my connector does look a little bent. However it would of had to be like this before, and it was charging until I let my battery get to 5% :-/
I had a similar problem with my Kaiser a couple of weeks ago - it started to crawl and a soft reset took over 15 minutes to come back up to a working state, after which the battery wouldn't charge. It definitely wasn't the charger at fault as that still works on my TyTN. Phone was about 3 months old, so called Vodafone UK who seemed to think it was software related and so provided next day swap out. Old battery works in the new handset so never did get to find out if it was hardware or software that caused it to die.
Here's what probabally happened... you meant to stick you stylus in the reset hole and accidently put it in the usb hole... thus bending your charging port. I did it and when I plugged it into my car it would actually discharge the battery.. but when I plugged it into an outlet it just wouldn't charge.. if I were you I'd go see if it charges in a car
I appear to have a similar issue when charging from PC usb, and have identified that if I put pressure up or down on the charger it will charge the kaiser. But if plug in the charger without applying directional force it will not charge. Currently i have a small weight resting on the mini USB chargin input.
So obviously something up with the connector. But I haven't jammed anything up the usb port to my knowledge. Are these ports really that flimsy?
Tilt owners: If charge mechanism breaks, is ATT cool?
Oh no, now I can't charge or sync my Tilt.
My power is slowly running out.
What do I do? This is covered by manufacturers warranty in a year, is
ATT going to take my Tilt back and give me a new one?
I need my phone to be working and working well.
Thoughts?

Charging from the computer should be better than the wall, given that the USB ports on the computer have a 5.5v output, while wall chargers have 5v.

Kaiser Charging Problem

I'm creating a new thread because I think my charging issue is unique...
My Kaiser will show an orange light and indicate that it's charging when:
1. Powered On and plugged in to: USB, AC power Adapter, or Car charger
but it will not take a charge and the orange light goes out after about two minutes.
2. Powered Off and plugged into: USB, AS Power, or car charger
but the orange light remains on and it never charges (tried 5 hours)
The device also does not sync, I don't see anything physcially wrong with the USB port, but it was damaged by water several weeks ago, it hasn't worked properly since.
I've been getting by with an external battery charger that I purhcased from Ebay.
Does anyway have any ideas? I've reflashed the device since then as well and there is no change in how it reacts to charging..
Hi echofive
I have the same problem with my Kaiser but at least it charges with just one of my 5 AC power adapters. Not in my Car charger and not on a USB connection.
Maybe it has something to do with the small USB pins on the Kaiser which are not properly aligned. You can try to bend them.
Good luck.
Hello, I was having this same issue and (long story short) I believe that it is the small USB pins on the phone.
Here is what I found (sorry knda long post). I have two ATT TILT phones. My Original Tilt phone got soaked in water but I was able to almost salvage the phone by soaking it in Denatured alcohol and letting it dry. This 'wet' Tilt has all functions but cannot read sim cards. It does however charge perfectly.
The replacement Tilt I have works like a charm but refuses to charge. Regardless of USB charging, off the wall charger or car charger, the orange light comes on, says it is charging but in 2 minutes the light goes out. The phone is still listed as charging but I know it is not charging because the battery level continues to drain. The phone does sync to my PC and I am able to transfer files to/from my new TILT via a USB cable. Just cannot charge the device.
I have 3 batteries. 2 stock batteries and the large 3200mah battery. All three batteries will not charge on my new TILT. I tried charging it via USB connected to my Computer, Car cigarette lighter, Car inverter charger, official TILT charger from CINGULAR ATT. Completely unable to charge the device.
If I attempt to charge the batteries (all three of them) on my old 'wet' TILT the batteries charge regardless of what method I use. It will charge via USB connected to the PC, USB connected to wall charger, official ATT TILT charger, or car charger. No issues. So I know the chargers, cables and batteries do charge on a TILT. Both TILTs are official ATT TILT devices. Two of the batteries are stock and 1 of the batteries is a SEIDO 3200mah.
Sometimes I get lucky and the new TILT phone does charge. In these cases I charged the phone using the Wall charger and the battery was over 50% capacity.
Now I know the new Tilt USB port is working because it syncs to my PC just doesnt charge after 2 minutes (light goes out) and battery continues to drain (watched and tested this after 3 hours of observation). I ended up ordering one of those TILT USB connectors which have a 3.5mm headphone jack and USB port.
This device: http://www.amazon.com/i-Trek-Stereo...8&s=musical-instruments&qid=1230877732&sr=8-4
What is weird is that I can now charge my NEW TILT using the USB port on this connector with this connector attached to my new TILT. If I attempt to charge the TILT using the onboard USB port, it stops after 2 minutes and the light goes out.
Personally, i think it has something to do with the pins. Hope this helps someone.

Been there, had that problem and the solution was even simpler and didn't involve the charging/USB port at all. Get a cotton bud (US folks call them Q-Tips) and spray some contact cleaner on it (not anywhere near the phone) and use it to carefully clean both the gold strips/terminals on the batteries along with the gold spring terminals on the phone. Although they may look clean, invisible grime film can make the connection fail and cause this problem. This is also a good tip to follow with ordinary household battery rechargers and NiMH cells. I haven't had this problem since but still carry out a terminal clean every few months to be on the safe side.
My phone wouldn't charge anymore. Searching through threads I found a magnificent magnified picture of the mini-USB port and the way the right part of the port was bent down a little. It was exactly like that with my phone, I used the pointing stick to tilt it up a little (be careful it may break of the pins, and that would lead you far from home!), which fixed! Haven't had the issue since!
Regards,
Nika.
Hi.
Have you still the link with the picture . I have the same problem an i am afraid , that i can kill my Kaiser
Regards
Dariely
Nope, sorry...
I had a similar issue with my Kaiser. It would charge with a USB cable and an ac adapter but not in the car. It used to but stopped. I took a dental tool and lifted the two little legs inside on the bottom of the mini usb port so they would contact the charger again and all is well.

YEAH!
Great Tip!
had the same issue as you a long time!
tilt up the pins: no more problem!
THANKS A LOT !
I straightened up the last pin. I was beginning to think it was my AC Charger...I plugged it in my Ashtray charger and it charged without a problem. I will see if this takes a charge. I didnt use any denatured alcohol, I just took the compressed air canisters used for computers and cleared out the usb port....

[Q] Corroded USB Charging Port Not Working

So, somehow or another, my charging port got wet. I checked the white pads on the battery, and the inside of the case, and they are still white. Not a spec of red.
Upon looking in my charging port, it's obvious that there is a corrosion issue. I had noticed that sometimes my phone didn't "charge" immediately when i plugged it in.
I tried heeking it up to my Windows 7 x64 PC, (with all drivers installed, regularly working), and sudden it could "not install or recognize device". Now it's not charging.
This Sucks.
I would love everyone for any help they may provide.
Thanks in advance.

Quick update. I removed the battery, then slightly sanded the contacts with a pice of super fine grit sandpaper. After this, i used a q-tip and cleaned it out with rubbing alcohol.
After waiting about 10 minutes, i plugged everything back in, and now it's charging, but still won't be recognized.
Just an update.
I'm waiting on hurricaine Earl to smash into me (I live on the Outer Banks Of NC), and I think it would be nice to have at least a charging phone
A pencil eraser is a safer alternative then sandbpaper. But if the corosion is deep into the socket, it is going to be tough.
You don't really have time now, but there are external chargers for batteries.
Well, it charges solidly now, but I can't seem to get even the slightest USB connection. Plus, the port being so small, i can't get any erasers inside.
Any more ideas?
I know some electronics stores (fry's) sell some type of liquid you can use to remove corrosion from electronics. I have not tried, but it may work. RadioShack may have something but they seem to suck for everything these days - so you may have to look in the phonebook for electronics.

[Q] micro usb connectivty problems

My nook coolor has worked perfectly since the day I got it, the second day after release. Last night when I put it in the charger I noticed that if the cable was pushed a little bit up when then nook lay flat it lost connection. It actually been charging itself up to 50% untill it stopped charging beacause of the cable.
I'm thinking that the micr usb port is the probleme here, is this a known issue?
I've seen reports of this being a problem. Usually the cord is at fault. You should be able to exchange it at a B&N
The USB port on the NC has two stages. The first stage has the standard 5 pin connections, but the second stage has 12 pins that are specific to charging the Nook. If you don't push the cable all the way in, it won't engage the 12 pins and won't charge properly...
Sent from my NookColor using Tapatalk
I've noticed this too on my NC. The cable plugs into the device easy enough but the slightest movement of the cord causes it to cycle between charging and not charging (orange and green 'n' on the cord). This makes it virtually unusable while plugged into AC power...not a deal breaker but a pretty annoying little bug. Will a new cord really fix this issue and will B&N replace them for free?
On similar hardware, often times that is an issue with the internal jack being tweaked too often and breaking the solder connections, or the copper traces themselves. From the tear-down pics, it's all surface mount, which means if it IS the jack, you're most likely SOL if not under warranty.
I've had my NC for about 3 weeks. My micro usb connector is no longer connecting reliably. I have to lay the NC on its face for the connector to maintain a data connection. The power connection is more reliable, but not 100% either.

USB-C charger won't stay in the port

I'm having a hard time getting my charger to stay in the charging port of my XZ1 Compact. This problem has been developing for months - first it started with non-Sony USB-C chargers, and now finally even my Sony USB-C charger keeps popping back out of the charging port. Sometimes I can get it to stay by pressing it in REALLY firmly, but it still doesn't feel as snug and secure as when I bought this phone last April.
I've removed some dust and debris from the phone's charging port, but it hasn't changed anything.
Has anyone else had this problem? Any recommendations? Thanks all.
I have the same problem. But i think it's my chargers fault. I think my kid used it on a wrong phone ?
I has this problem as well. The reason was dust inside the USB c connector on the xz1c.
The first thing I did to fix it was to shut down the phone.
I used a needle and a toilet paper to remove the dust inside the connector.
I just tidied up around the USB board and made sure that I didn't scratch / touch it with the needle.
After I had taken out a certain amount of dust with the needle, I wiped the dust into the paper and altogether I had taken out several dust balls.
I've had troubles charging my phone (xz1 compact, so usb c port) for over a year. Only few cables worked, and still fit in port was not good, figured I damaged the port at some point. I've removed dirt and dust on multiple occasions with paper clip or similar, which slightly helped. Today I used a wooden toothpick, which seemed to be the optimal for fit and allowing sufficient force to scrape and remove dust at the deep end of the port. The amount that came out was surprising and now all cables fit, lock and charge perfectly again.
Just figured I'd share this, even if you think you've removed dust or there is none.. Try better
I had that problem too. But like @jurrienk said...try harder. I didn't believe it at first, but it's the dust?
I've had this problem for several months, I have done all the cleaning processes suggested (except using gum), pin, toothpick, digging deep, etc. No lint - but I don't keep it in a pocket, I keep it in a purse (satin lining), there was a tiny bit of black residue on the toothpick, so I dipped the toothpick in alcohol to try to cut that. It didn't really get anything more. USB C connector still loose as a goose - pretty much falls right out. I can't find my original Sony USB C charge cable, but if I remember correctly it had quit working. Very frustrating when using the phone with Android Auto, constantly have to re-insert cord while driving and restart Android Auto just for GPS. Anybody found anything else that worked like magic?

Same here. Only original cable still working, falling out often, must be carefully wigled in again. No other generic usb-c cables working, and I tried a lot of them. Cleaning the port did not help...
I got the phone for like 2 years now, so maybe the port is just worn out?
Turns out my issue was dust and lint. It was really in there. I did a deep clean, way deeper than I thought, and found tons of debris. My port worked great after that*.
*Actually, it continued to attract dust and debris, and every 4 months or so I'd have to clean it out again, so I got a magnetic charger with a nub that stays in my USB-C port fulltime. Problem solved!
