S8+ reset itself - Root to recover photos? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions & Answers

So while hiking today my S8+ somehow reset itself. My guess is it incorrectly tried the pass code a bunch of times or something. That is all i can come up with.
Got to the truck, and when I went to unlock it, it was at the setup screen. :crying:
Most importantly to me now is the bunch of photos I took this morning of my family. I setup the phone, let it recover the Apps, but all other data is gone. I tried some "photo recovery" apps but they just look at what exists on the SD card. I tried PhotoRec by CGsecurity but it isn't detecting the phone as a drive. I tried EaseUS mobile recovery, but it needs the phone rooted to scan the memory. At this point it turned it off so not to corrupt any more data I could recover.
Before I jump through the hoops, I want to see if there are any other options? Or is rooting the phone the only CHANCE at deep scanning the internal memory and recovering whatever I can? Can the Verizon S8+ be rooted successfully? I read the instructions on the samPWNED thread but it scared me more than anything and seems old. I have rooted devices before. Nothing else to really lose at this point unless I can brick the phone.
Thanks, seriously bummed right now.

[Q] is my info safely gone now (after encryption and hardreset)

i got my xperia z about a week ago i absolutely loved it no other phone has had the effect this one has on me i adore it i set it up with my settings apps etc
then i noticed a tiny tiny little scratch and now i want to return it even paying to get it exchanged
however i put in all my passwords in it (which i plan to change)
i did some searching around and saw that encrypting the phone would make the data virtually impossible to recover once deleted
i also used a program called nuke my phone which turns out dosn't work on encrypted files so it was stuck in a loop according to the author of the program encrypting the files before erasing everything has the same effect
so can i now safely change this phone without worrying about anything?
i encrypted the phone which wook about 1 hour i then did a factory reset of it

Are you still playing with this problem ?
It's ok - everyone has looked at porn. We won't judge you.
If you have encrypted and factory reset your phone all you can do is check your accounts in settings make sure nothing is there. As a last resort you could format the SD card, obviously take out your own SD card. If you are really in doubt you could fill the internal card with files full of 1 and 0's (overwriting blank space) after that there's nothing much you can do apart from burning the device. Or develop a small EMP to wipe it...
And if you're really paranoid, change all your passwords on your accounts and use 2 step authentication.

you'd think i did but i didn't honest lol
thing is i am paranoid all i want gone is my passwords thats all i never put ANY files in the phone itself i never used the camera i barely got time to use it
i have no sd card in it
as for 2 step verification already activated on all accounts
I'd say you're good so. There is nothing else you can do.

Yep pretty much, good luck to anyone trying to recover that.

Excuse my ignorance but I have always thought that with the built-in factory data reset that...well...that was that and all traces of user info banished.

Rooted HTC Vivid. Big Mess. Need Help

Ok, just to get this out of the way, I am an idiot.. Many points in this post will verify this fact. I apologize in advance, but sincerely appreciate any help.
So, this issue started badly and has gone down hill from there. I will try to go step-by-step with what has happened and will probably use too many words because I usually do.
To start, I have an HTC Vivid, rooted with the Vivid All-in-One Root Kit V2.2. When I got the phone nearly 2 years ago, I rooted it as soon as I got it out of the box and the root went flawlessly. I am still on stock ICS 4.0.3 and HTC 3.6. I have CWM Recovery 5.5.0.4.
While on vacation last week, my phone was being buggy. Shutting off, taking forever to reboot and once rebooted if you touched in less than 5 minutes, it died again. It has done this in the past but was getting worse. So, Monday night, having just got back from vacation, and utterly exhausted, I decided it was a fine time to move some media files that should not have been on my phone storage to my sd card. I grabbed the DCIM file in ES Explorer and moved it to ext-sd folder. In my tired state, I did not realize I was not moving it to the right area. I fell asleep while it was transferring.
I woke up the next morning and saw some type of notification from ES Explorer, but was running late to get the dog from the kennel, so I dismissed it and ran. While at the vets, I realized my text message tone had reset to default. I went back home and looked and all my vacation pictures and videos from Sunday and all my ringtones were gone. So, I start trying to find my pics and ringtones on my phone and it starts crashing again. At this point, I can't get it to stay on for longer than 5 minutes. I could get the phone to behave if I mounted as a disk drive on my PC, so I copied all the internal and sd files to a folder on my desk top.
After working on things for hours, at my husband's advice, I did a factory reset. I opted to do this from CWM. I thought I had been backing everything up on Titanium (nope, apparently not. I thought I had it backing up all user apps and system data). So, since I didn't have a proper Titanium back up, I reinstalled all the folders from my desktop back to my phone. In the past, when I have done this (long time ago, first phone I rooted, then when changing phones), the phone was restored exactly like it was before. This time, nope.. Several pictures still gone, SIM card wiped of all phone number data (have no idea how), call logs and text messages gone. APP data gone..
I used Disk Digger to find the missing photos and videos which have now become corrupted. (I am hoping to be able to restore them, we'll see). I also found my downloaded ringtones. They were fine.
So, then I start trying to restore my phone to how it was before, but nothing was working. I looked at the files I transferred and can see all the information is in there, but not loading correctly. I had my phone numbers backed up to Google, but even though I had them set to sync, none of the numbers I had on my SIM card were on the Google contacts list. Well, several factory resets and idiot moves later, I have managed to delete a system file or two by mistake. I can't even make a phone call at this point.
Here's what I need to find out:
I know I probably need to reflash the ROM. I want the ROM to remain stock 4.0.3, because I like it like that. I still have the All-in-One Kit and all it's associated files on my computer. Can I run the Vivid All-in-One again starting at a different step since it is already rooted? Can I just go to the "extras" menu and select Flash Factory RUU Zip, or should I do what I saw on this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1416836. I have Odin on my PC as well. Should I reinstall from there?
Once I have restored my ROM, is there anyway I can restore my phone to the state it was in Monday night before I screwed everything up. So sorry for the long post, but I figured the more details the better. I truly appreciate any advice. I know I have pulled some seriously stupid mess ups here and just need some help.
ETA:
I found I was backing up w /Titanium correctly, but forgot to mention after ES did whatever it did, my sd card was completely wiped as well. I did not move anything or format my SD card.. Apparently ES or whatever was wrong with my phone did. I had my Titanium set to back up to some cloud, but don't remember the settings.. (Again really, really stupid of me.)

No... Odin is for Samsung phones...
Yea you should RUU...
While your at it... Ditch CWM for TWRP... Even if you don't use recovery all that much...
The only way to put the phone back to where it was... Since you don't have a nandroid backup is to change the settings yourself...

Well, after 5 days of fighting, only after I put my business online for all to see, I found my back up from Titanium!! It had been moved to a subfolder of a subfolder that I had looked in multiple times before. Ran it and phone has been restored including system files. It's back running normally now!
Lessons learned:
Do not decide after vacation and after driving for several hours to move files on your phone. You will mess it up!
Only after you have written an overly long post will you figure out what you did and fix it and feel even dumber than before..
Many, many thanks.
BTW, I am a bigger fan of Titanum than ever before. I can't how perfectly it restored everything, down to what panels I had my different apps on.

Stuck in boot loop after insufficient space on internal storage

Hey guys, I need some help.
My beloved phone got too full the other night and ended up in a coma. Now she..I mean it, wont wake up anymore. I can only get her to open her eyes enough for a couple of blinks, but never really to a conscious state. I'm certainly not willing to let her go and want to keep her from loosing all the good memories we had together... Please help me safe her!...
Enough storytelling...
I've got the Samsung GT-I9252 (Galaxy S4 Active), which is not rooted. Recently I updated to Lollipop which worked fine without any issues.
As I am a usual data horder, I quickly ran out of space (yes, both on the SD card and the internal memory), so that I constantly saw the warning in the status bar that the phone ran out of memory. As I wasn't near a computer I could use for a while to move some files, I continued using it as normal. Because of the lack of memory, the google play store would not install any updates, which was totally fine. However, the Samsung app-store-thing seemed to care a bit less about it and tried to force to download and install what it thought to be "important updates", like for example "text-to-speach" (I haven't even figured out how to use that feature)... Even though there would not be enough space. And I couldn'd really do anything to stop it. The phone started to get slower and I wasn't even able to take pictures anymore (still not around a computer to tranfer data). So the other day I wanted to restart the phone (as I had done a couple of times since the message of lack of space) and it would just not boot up anymore.
It is stuck at the Samsung logo.
My first thought was, well I simply plug it into a computer and transfer some data to make some space and then it would boot up again, but I had to find out that you do not simply plug your phone into a computer and access its data if it refuses to boot...
So I read about the safe mode and tried to find it without any luck (either I'm too stupid to activate it or it got removed). Next I tried to sweep the cache partition, as I managed to get into the recovery boot. It got deleted, but the phone would still not boot.
I definitley want to avoid a factory reset for various reasons!
Then I read about some ways to push/pull data from your phone with a computer, when in recovery mode (with ADB if I recall correctly)... But that's kind of as far as I got.
Now I'm asking for your help and expertise.
Do you think it would be possible to transfer and/or delete some files and if that would solve the problem and lets the phone boot up again; and if yes, how should I approach? Or do you think the cause for the problem lies somewhere completely different?
Thank you so much in advance!
-Nino
Go to Recovery, go to Mount USB storage then connect your phone to your PC. Wait for a few minutes as the drivers will still be installed. Move all your files then try rebooting. I'm not really sure what could be the cause of your problem but if it still doesn't boot up, I've got no clue what other things you could do aside from factory resetting. To be safe, wait for another reply before taking my advise.
Thanks for your reply, VIPNobie!
Well it reminds me that I actually read about it and the problem is that in the recovery boot there is not the option to choose mount usb =/
Don't really understand why.. It would be the easiest solution tho.
Alright, so now I managed to fix it. To be honest, I'm not exactly sure what the problem\solution was. My plan was to connect it with Heimdall and see what I could do through that.. I set the phone in download mode, got the drivers installed and detected the device in heimdall, I ran the command to list the partitons and as soon as that finished, the computer notified me that the device had been disconnected and my phone restarted by itself... tho this time it booted normally as if nothing happened.. so I could back up my data, still need to try to restart the phone, but just wanted to make sure that I got everything backed up.
So even if this might not help others, this thread can be set to solved I guess
Thanks again.
I have the same problem. what did you mean by "I ran the command to list the partitons". Please provide more details.

Secure Startup won't recognize Pattern

Restarted my phone this morning, and the secure startup won't recognize my Pattern. I KNOW it's my pattern. Not sure if the touch screen is being finicky and not connecting the dots correctly or what, but i'm down to the LAST attempt.
I don't really care about majority of the stuff except for maybe my photos,
Since this is encrypted, am I really pooched here? I'm hoping there may be some option, to root, or backup and try a few times or something? Anyone have any creative solutions?
Just want to snag my photos/videos as I JUST took a bunch of photos I really want to save, and I do not have any photos being backed up to any cloud either. Disabled that, unfortunately.
Hope someone can help!!
Try wiping the cache partition in Recovery Mode. If that doesn't help, take your device to a Service Center and let them take a look at it.

Note 9 recovery

I'm sorry if this is a dumb question or over asked, I'm new and could really use some help
so my note 9 messed up last night and the screen wouldn't turn on, I could plug the charger in and it would vibrate and the red dot would come, I did the reset holding the lock button and volume down, and it didn't fix it, the only way to get the screen on was by constantly plugging and unplugging the charger and maybe after 5 or 20 min it would turn on. So I kept trying the rest since I couldn't turn it off normally and it didn't change anything, and in doing that I some how factory reset the phone without backing up over 1000 photos, I started to Google and got a lot of people saying that the photos could still be there locked away waiting to be overwritten but I would need to root my phone and get in there with certain programs, with further googling I found that my phone Samsung note 9 with snapdragon can't yet be rooted because the locked bootloader and there isn't an easy way to unlock it, i saw there was one way but that involved erasing everything on the phone. So my questions are are my photos actually buried in the phone and I need to figure out how to root it or are they just gone and if its the former, is there a way to root it without erasing everything, if that erases the hidden files, because if they are just gone this phone is going in the garbage, not even two years old and it bricked
I posted this on reddit before I found this place, sorry if this is misuse of the forum I could just really use some help, some of the photos were very sentimental and I just want to know if they could possibly still be there
Old android version(probly ics or lower) allowed the internal storage to be mounted as usb storage in computer. Then can use recovery program such as recuva to recover the deleted files, without root. However that day has long gone. Probably there is a program out there could recover your files/photos. I used to read somewhere that a windows based program claims to be able to do that but I can't recall what was it. In short, they're unlikely can be recovered. But let's wait if anybody else could shed us some lights.

It's sad to hear that. I think your problem might be the battery, go to some repair store and check your battery, everything I know. If you want to save your data (photo, video....), the first thing you have to do is make your phone usable, right? I recommend you go to the Samsung center, tell them your problem, may be you will get some solution that may resolve your issue. We are users, we are not developers so everything we can do is seek help from someone and in this situation please go to a Samsung center, maybe God will smile at you.
P/s: did you check your data in google cloud and Samsung cloud? As i know your data like photos or video will auto-sync with your Google account and Samsung account, may be you will get lucky.

Sorry if that didn't help you and my bad English.
