Get BKPackageDisabler from the play store and disable the following:
Software Update - con.sec.android.soagent
System Update - com.samsung.sdm
System Update - com.samsung.sdm.sdmviewer
I did that and the update no longer comes up. The update option is no longer even available on my phone. It's easy to undo, when you do decide that you want to update.

I don't have my phone rooted. BKPackageDisabler is pretty useful for disabling those annoyances. You can't remove anything from your phone, but it's the next best thing.

What about turning off animation (three items) in the Developer Menu? I had actually set mine to .5 as in the previous nougat the was an issue rwith right click menus not working properly if set to 0. (I actually installed "SystemUI Tuner" to make it .2). Does that help?

I just set all 3 on mine to 0 (off) and I don't see the same problems as in Nougat - Yay!

He's actually suggesting changing animation speed, not disabling notifications.

Same here, not a fan of 8.0 Oreo, I have tried Oreo many times already & prefer to stay on Nougat for various reasons.
Aside from BK Disabler, in Software Updates in Settings, isn't there an option to disable checking for updates? Then in Developers Options, turn off Auto Update System as well. I forget as I rooted my phone on day 2 but on my Sony TV with Nougat I have that option to disable checking for updates.

Rooting is the reason for what?
Oreo not faster or slower for me. Speed is not the issue or a concern for me. And if you're a benchmark junkie, you'll find Oreo scores lower with Geekbench but scores higher with Antutu.

anyway to do this without package disabler pro?

I think that's the real sweet spot. I've set all my phones to .5 and I never had issues. Just snappy enough. Love it.

Found this thread, paid the $4 for the "Pro" version of Package Manager via their web site. I want to stay on Nouget because I have an S7 Edge and there are S7-edge specific features in Nougat which were removed in Oreo, and I do not want to lose access to those features (the whole reason why I bought the Edge to start with -- and yes, I did try the oreo update and wasn't happy with it, so I downgraded back to Nougat). The annoying "update" message appears every morning around 9am, and I have to constantly "force stop", which hopefully this program will alleviate. Worth the price for the comfort of knowing I will not "accidentally" be upgraded to Oreo w/o my knowledge or consent.

The OTA is huge, to the tune of 1.1 GB, but I finally got it downloaded and installed. There are lots of UI tweaks and performance seems really good. Plus, the radio bug introduced with the NK1 update is fixed, so the cellular radio shouldn't randomly shut off anymore.
So far, I'm pretty happy with it. What say ye, fellow XDAers?

Not giving me a choice. Starts downloading as soon as I connect to Wifi. And I f*&#ing HATE TouchWiz. First thing I do on a Samsung device is install a launcher with even the most basic of customization options and disable the S-anything bloatware. SwiftKey is a better keyboard and Google (ya know; the stuff that's included with Android) is a better everything else.
Of course that's just my opinion but you asked why I don't want the update.

MIUI EU vs MIUI stock

Hello,
What differences are there between MIUI EU and MIUI stock?
Less bloatware (is it really that bad? )
It's nice to have google stuff built in, but it's fairly easy to install anyway.
What else?
I'm wondering if it's really worth the trouble to switch to MIUI EU, if I can root the stock ROM anyway.
All of the reviews say the Mix is quite snappy, I'm wondering if all the lags/etc are caused by the MIUI EU rom?
Not sure if you read my posts on here complaining about the lags or not. But it sounded like you might have lol.
I was on EU ROM for about 3 days, and the user experience wasn't all that great at all. Snappy is the last word I would use to describe my experience with it. I'm switching to China Dev ROM, and I will see how well it runs on the Mi Mix comparing to EU ROM. Do note at the EU ROM is in very early stage, weekly build for Mi Mix has been suspended for 2 consecutive weeks. I'm sure EU ROM has a lot to bring in the near future. As of right now, I think I'm sticking to the stock ROM.

I had the same issue as well.
It feels buggy. I didn't face any lags when I was on the Chinese rom, but the eu rom seems to have some issues at the moment.
I had multiple freezes as well as slow downs.
---------- Post added at 08:39 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:15 PM ----------
Also, When I received my phone, the seller installed multi-language rom. It's not the eu rom.
I think they just enabled other languages on the Chinese rom, and It worked great.
Reverted to the twrp backup and its much smoother.
I'm the opposite of you guys. EU dev Rom was better for me than the China stable Rom. On CN, Play Store download lagged, time was not always correct due to locale always reverting back to China even though I set to a different country and had to turn off Auto Time Zone. I had issues downloading and being unable to set wallpapers and lock screen. The only way I could change it is by changing the themes.
But with EU dev, I didn't have any of those issues.
I would consider reflashing the EU dev to see if it helps or not but up to you.

Same here, had play store already on too. Everything worked great, left localization to China as nothing else seemed better and language was already English. The built in weather app didn't work but no biggy. What got me though, was being a Google Voice user I could set it to make all calls with GB - if I did calls would start with the dialer coming up but then immediately closing. Only worked for calls with GV set to not make any calls. Had to let it go.for this reason but if euro ROM doesn't have this GV making calls issue (can anyone try and advise) I would get another.

I was going to stick w/the Global MIUI,as I'm not having performance issues (Phone/Messaging/G-Mail/Data/WI-FI all excellent).
I wouldn't even mind the Xiaomi/MIUI Bloat if I could disable most of it,namely the built-in CleanMaster malware.
The memory management seems a bit aggressive as well, regarding recent apps, regardless of app/system settings.
Can the Xiaomi/MIUI/CleanMasterbloat be disabled on the stock/unrooted (?) EU ROM,or,is TWRP/ROOT (SD Maid/TI-Bu) the only solution?
I was able to disable the memory manager and clean up stuff, also some utility that seems to make you confirm permissions for apps over and over. Mine was China ROM with multi-language support added.

Which utility are you talking about? The one that ask for NFC permissions? I'm looking how to disable that.
One thing to add regarding EU rom is that BT is working properly now as before with CN rom, BT would take so many attempts just to connect. Now with EU, it connects automatically instead of me continuously trying to get it to connect. One thing I do miss is having wifi calling but I'll get over it.
I wasn't able to disable system apps until I installed https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.namelessrom.devicecontrol&hl=en
I found that app after googling it, http://www.ghacks.net/2016/04/11/remove-system-apps-from-xiaomi-devices/
Yeah, perhaps - if memory serves it was always asking for NFC permissions bit I think it did so with others.

I found it weird but didn't think nothing of it until recently. Been trying to figure out how to disable the NFC permissions on apps and I looked at apps permissions to see if i can turn it off but only saw: Contacts, Location, Phone and Storage.
Sorry, can't recall specifically but I think if you go in through their cleaner utility you can turn it off there.

Thanks, found it in Settings > Permissions > Other permissions.
Definitely gonna open a Xiaomi account here in a few minutes, gonna have to unlock/root/install the EU ROM,the memory management has seemingly went from bad to worse, turning off Google Play Music repeatedly, only keeping 3 apps in recents & having to manually connect my Gear S2 on every boot.
The latter two I can tolerate, especially the Gear S2,as it stays connected once I force/manually do so within the Gear Manager app.
But,the constant interruption of Google Play Music is not cool.
Seems MIUI is the mess I've been reading about for years, some of it is nice but, that Clean Master garbage keeps opening up stuff I don't want (Browser) & closing the things I actually use.
The settings seem redundant as for memory management/permissions: too many cooks in the kitchen.

Yeah its a mess, I had to go in there and manually set everything, I did set apps not to suspend like Play Music and others though. The best part of MIUI is its constant updates if you're into using MIUI, if you're into using stock. Hopefully, there will be devs creating ROM's for this phone soon.
I'm really liking this phone and I'll grow use to MIUI but I do miss the SPEN and TW calendar app though, lol.

Personally, I won't be updating anything until it comes through officially via updates on the phone! I'm not going to muck about with my €1000 investment! I'm not even rooting this one! Usually I root to get rid of adverts but it seems that the Samsung adblockers seem to work well and paying €20 odd for their Disconnect Pro has stopped 90% of adverts coming through!

Newbie - So what is the benefit of Rooting your phone nowadays?

Last time I was here was during the HTC EVO days and got my phone rooted. Back than - it increased my battery life and unlocked a lot of capabilities the phone was able to handle.
Nowadays - buying a note 8 seems very powerful as is. These capabilities I spoke of are now there... so what is the purpose nowadays for rooting?
At the moment, I am considering rooting only to remove the bloat and I enjoy a barebones Rom... but even than, 64gb - I dont know if I really should bother or not... convince me please

I agree - no rooting. You just introduce instability. This thing is a wicked fast BEAST.

I root mainly for xposed (not working on the SD Note 8 yet). To edit the csc features xml, to use sixaxis controller app, titanium backup and a few other things. It's true you don't not root on such a bad ass phone like this as it's great is but I enjoy having control over my device.
You won't need root unless you are a developer I don't think, everything we needed root for back in Note 2,3,4 days are now available out of the box or there is an app for it

Bk package disabled app should suffice for you
many of the reasons for rooting are still present, mostly boiling down to much greater ability to customize the software, as well as more flexible backup options.
Rooting certainly does not introduce instability, as the phone will continue to run as stock until software is changed/deleted/added to make it 'run' differently.
Get 4k recording with 60 fps (exynos only)
Recover anything thats permanently deleted from internal stprage
