How durable is this phone? - Huawei P20 Pro Questions & Answers

I'm not normally one for phone cases. I think they ruin the look and feel which are major selling points of flagship phones, especially the sleek and glossy P20 Pro. But this phone feels really delicate. It's like holding a slab of glass. And we don't even know for sure yet what kind of glass (https://forum.xda-developers.com/huawei-p20-pro/help/phone-gorilla-glass-protrction-yes-t3771328).
So my question is has anyone damaged their P20 pro yet? Anyone dropped it? Scuffed the body? Scratched the screen or back? I'm trying to get an idea of how vulnerable it is.

Tragic that I'm the first to reply to my own thread but I have actually cracked my screen! Not very badly. Just a hairline crack that sort of cuts off the top left corner about 1cm in. No not sure how it happened. I haven't dropped it. I may have put it down on the table slightly too hard, but nothing major. I'm a bit disappointed in its durability. I'm sure my old OnePlus 3t survived similar treatment many many times. Guess I'm going to have to use a case or be extra careful. I wouldn't fancy it's chances if I dropped it though!

Could it be that you cracked just factory installed protective plastic screen that exist over real glass screen?

No sadly not. The screen is definitely cracked.

It's gorilla glass 5.
Also, I have dropped mine from above my head while taking a photo at a gig and the phone bounced along the floor but suffered no damage, not even a scratch.
Sent from my CLT-L29 using Tapatalk

Mine fell off the side I was sitting at the other day on to a solid flooring, no marks at all. Sorry to hear of the damage OP any chance you've got phone insurance? I'm really fussy when it comes to scratches/marks I try get them fixed or get a new phone!

Under "Services", on the top of the page, There is a picture with P20pro and text that says "Premium Service" etc. And link for warranty request. But, it could be that this is not avaliable on all markets?

I don't have this premium insurance option in the UK. The P20 doesn't even come up as one of the phones you can insure through Huawei.

I''m from Italy and I've bought a 2 year complete insurance from my dealer for € 100.
It can be damaged from everything and they will replace entirely the phone: I guess there could be an option like this in UK.

I'm with O2 in the UK, and I have insured my phone against pretty much everything so it is definitely possible to insure it. The phone should also come with a warranty, if you can prove the screen is defective and wasn't up to the specified standard then you would be able to put in a request for a replacement.

I've got this additional 3 months unconditional screen replacement for free here in Croatia. And regular insurance is 24 months. I've got the same, plus 6 months extended warranty for free for my previous P10. Don't know why Huawei has such politics here

I'm curious about whether the phone was defective because I didn't really do anything that would damage it. Could have scratched it (can a scratch turn into a crack?). Seems very unlikely that I cracked it without noticing. But no idea how is go about proving that the phone was defective.

Unfortunately, the Nexus was the only camera I had.
Dude... Gorilla Glass is still glass.
It's engineered to be scratch resistant, not shatter proof.
If it makes impact with something sharp/pointed or if it makes contact in just the right spot, it will shatter. It's just physics.
If the shock can't disperse evenly or if it's absorbed entirely by the screen, it will shatter. That's what bumpers are for.
Either way, you dropped it. That's not Google's fault. They didn't sell you a defective device, they sold a device to a clumsy person.

Not scratch proof. I had a scratch on it after the first day of light use....I have no idea how it got there.
Is there any way I can get this repaired? This is my only phone and I hate the thought that I just threw away $340.
LG said:
This is the way the warranty service works here: The warranty that we offer is valid for 12 months with the copy of the receipt and it covers only manufacturing defects, no liquid, physical or cosmetic damages, otherwise charges may apply for the repair on the unit. The process takes 5-7 business days, and the only cost that you need to cover would be shipping and handling by sending the defective unit to us and we cover the shipping back with Fedex.
michelle: If the phone is out of warranty, you can still send it in to us, we can evaluate it and check if it is repairable or not. If there’s a repair cost, we will inform you how much it is and then you decide if you want to pay or not for the repair on the unit.

Yes, same here chief. Bumper sold out, Immediately tho I bought my ass a $3 TPU case from China for the time till the bumpers come back up. You could be paying if the screen/digitizer cost like the nexus did at like 150+ just for that part! Good luck tho man.

My main question is . how much more protection does a cover gives is there a drop test ?
Second question. Dude don't you have a home insurance or anything like that ?if it broke at home you are covered . check your bank account if you're paying for it you might have an insurance on it.
And this is what I'm going to do. Get an insurance for my phone and won't even use a cover or bumper .if it breaks I'll get a new one

This is going to be just like the nexus 7, a cheap build that breaks easy and the slightest crack will make the touch screen stop working. I dropped my nexus 7 on carpet and it cracked in a case. Not a big crack but everything stopped working and the cost to fix it was as much as buying a new one. Had to do a squaretrade scam to get my money back.
Only because the phone is 300 dollars will I be buying one. Going to buy 3 and get one squaretrade warranty so whichever one breaks first can use it.

That sucks, my friend's Nexus 4 cracked a few days too, lower left side of the screen is unusable. If you want to do a DIY repair, the Screen+Digitized+Frame can be found on eBay (shipped from California). Unfortunately, it's pricey ($200+). I think LG is going to charge around $160ish for a repair. Let us know what they quote you.

[Q] Replacing cracked glass on Note 4

My very late, in rush butt started running without realizing that my phone fell out. I got the phone back from a stranger after multiple attempts to unlock my phone and keep it. Anyways, my friends and I, we came to conclusion that my phone was ran over by a car, face down on the asphalt. Tech21 screen protector on it has multiple holes and dents from the surface of the asphalt. Luckily enough, everything is fine but the screen, of course. It cracked every where. Every tallest bumps of the road left a crack on the screen. I can barely read but actual screen is FINE. THANK GOD!!
SOOO end of story. I ordered repair kit on eBay but I was wondering if anyone went through changing the glass on Note 4 yet? am i the first one?? T.T
Edit: it's my first time replacing the glass but I've dealt with similar stuff before. If anyone would like a video of it, I could try to record it. If I crack my screen, people could cry with me or laugh at me.

It would work better if you had the machine to separate the glass from the screen. I will say if the screen is badly cracked up you might have a really low success rate.
why not just buy a whole screen? they are under $200 the last time i checked on ebay. less risk and less headache.
you can even try just the glass after you replace the screen just to do it and if it works you have a back up, if not no loss.
i have a machine and hardly use it cuz how bad people break their screens today, whole screen is the safe bet.
i don't know if its the same in your area but most places charge $100-150 to replace the glass and most places don't reapply new adhesive to the digitizer and glass . so the glass is being held onto the phone by the frame only.

I agree completely. I dropped the phone on the road while riding and except the top right corner crack on screen there is no damage. Somewhat surprising because i must be atleast 30 mph and the force with which it fell, should have broken into pieces. Not even the back cover came off the phone.

My screen cracked while snowboarding and Repairs Universe offers a new glass/digitizer assembly for $189. I contacted Samsung and they offered to repair it for $197.77, so for an additional $8 someone will do it for you. The only downside is you'll be without a phone for about 1.5-2 weeks.
I was worried about the stuff from Repairs Universe being genuine Samsung parts (wanna make sure I get a real 1440p screen and not Chinese knock off crap that's only 720p), so I contacted them. They assured me that it is a genuine Samsung screen, but they could have been lying to me just to get a sale. For that extra $8 I'll get genuine Samsung parts and it'll be getting done properly by someone that know what they're doing.
So for anyone that needs a new screen those are two options for you.

I went to their website on my phone, clicked on contact us, and did a live chat with one of their customer service people. It'll ask you to choose which product you're contacting them about (phones, TVs, appliances, etc) then what kind of phone. They'll ask for your IMEI number and all that jazz. I found them to be quite polite and helpful.
The only down side is you'll be without a phone for about 2 weeks, so make sure you have a backup phone to use or prepare yourself for terriblewithdrawal from not having your Note...

Yes, that's the price they charge. I was letting everyone know that these are the guys that Samsung uses. They use genuine OEM parts and are the only repair center in the United States authorized to do Samsung repairs. If you look earlier in the thread, someone said that Samsung charges $197.77 with a 1.5-2 week turn around. As you just said yourself, this method would be $5 cheaper and 2x faster than going through Samsung to get the same place to repair your phone. Just was putting it out there if someone wanted 100% assurance that they were getting genuine OEM parts but didn't want to wait 1.5-2 weeks that Samsung quoted them.

Yup same reason I haven't cancelled the tmo 'jump' subscription. You do have to factor in the $10 per month subscription price though, so if you break your phone in 10 months, it's $275.
T-Mobile insurance to replace phone is $175 I just filed a claim on Saturday and got a new phone not refurbished today. The only problem is I had a Note 4 in White but they sent Gray since White was not in stock. I called T-Mobile and complained and got a $30 credit applied to my account so I really just paid $145

Something bizarre on the edge of screen

Hi everyone,
I got my Z3 compact a week ago and all is good, but I just noticed something weird on the edge of the screen, it's like there's a wire or something popping out in the gap between the screen and the frame. This got me wondering if there might be a problem with the water resistance, what do you guys think?
The device is brand new and didn't suffer from any drops or any weird maneuvers, didn't even been tried in water.
Thanks and have a good day.
Sent from my D5803 using XDA Free mobile app
looks like a misplaced gasket... try the pressure sensor in test mode, open dialer and digit *#*#7378423#*#*, then service tests and pressure sensor... push oh the screen, if the pressure doesn't change even a little bit, your phone is not waterproof and needs to be sent for repair
p.s. when I say push, I mean apply a reasonable force to the screen, not crack it.. if it really is a misplaced gasket, the pressure will be steady.. if not, you'll notice continuous micro-variations in pressure as you hold the phone in your hand
Actually it rises by 3 or 4 millibars and drops back (to lower value than the original) in two or three seconds.. This means it's intact I guess?
Sent from my D5803 using XDA Free mobile app
I have the same problem with my z3 compact. But it's on the opposite side where yours have occurred. I don't know how much it would cost to get it fixed but I assume it would be a little expensive because I do think they have to replace the whole front LCD+Digitizer that comes with it's own adhesive.
But I'm not bothered about it at all because even when it was still intact, I said to myself that I would never put or drop this phone on the pool or water. I bought myself a protector just incase I want to take underwater pictures.
yes, it seems so.
But if you've just bought it, I'd return it anyway and buy another
Did it happen just like that or was it there since you bought the phone?
I agree with you, not gonna expose it to water, but still it sucks that you have a water resistant phone and you worry about water.

That does not sound right. The manufacturer's warranty should cover defective products. You have to pay extra for that? Mine was repaired under warranty (for a different problem) without paying extra for a warranty.
To me it's seem that the screen is a bit high too on the angle, in mine the glass is parallel or maybe a bit lower compared to the frame, yours seems like the glass is higher compared to the frame, how much is the value of millibar?? 10k+ about??

Yeah it does, as long as you install the right way. No bubbles. This video I am going to link you is for impact shield s8 install. Same concept so no biggie. Watch that video a few times so you get it right. Also order it off ebay it's cheaper. Got 1 new $20, I've seen them even lower. They normally go for $40-50 new elsewhere.
I will advise against it just due to how horrible customer service is. If you need to ever have it replaced good luck.

Removing the film number 3 looks dangerous as it looks like this is the period dust can also get in.

Use dust stickers and you won't have any issues with dust. You could also use some tape. Also you will notice there's still bubbles after installation. That's normal after 24-48 hours they disappear.

With customer service? I mean I've heard bad and good with the customer service from others in regards to tech21. Not going to lie it's been about 50/50 Good and bad from various sites user feedback.
I am mostly putting my kneck out for there protection. It seem like people where putting on screen protector incorrectly. I followed that girl in youtube video and have no issues. I will say that the screen protector installation has to many unnecessary steps.
I totally believe you. Was just curious how'd they gave you a bad experience?

That's ridiculous. I can see why your PO. Sounds like they're giving you the runaround and probably didn't even send 1 smh.
I'm wanting to get the Evo Tactical, but it won't ship when I have it in my cart. It will say there are no quotes at the time, but I can order a screen protector no problem. I contacted support earlier today, I didn't expect them to get back to me that quick, but hopefully they can help.

The first EVO wallet came over here with three scratches on the top. Chatted with Tech21, submitted a picture during chat and got a replacement in perfect condition within a few days. They don't wanted me to return the scratched case. Using the scratched one now and have another one as replacement. Perfect service. Don't they submitted a tracking nr. to you?

I find tape leaves marks to be honest. I also find not many people supply the dust removers in their packaging these days.
During the application process in the video, it shows removing film number 3. Whilst removing film number three the other hand is applying the film thus if dust lands during the number 3 process one is screwed?
I'd like to try this film as I think the material used is similar to the ONN Walmart Note 8 and s8plus screen protectors. Almost like glass but not quite. The latter would have been perfect non glass screen protectors if only they worked. Edges lifted.
I'm currently back to the same sort of screen protector that I had when I first bought my N8. The wet applied clear film that has a 2.5mm gap all the way around the edges. Seems to be the only solid ones out there. Made by Skinomi, Illumishield, Armousuit etc , $60 or so dollars later LOL
The Spigen wet applied film was nice with smaller gaps, but the peel on the film was a joke.

Masking tape is the best for this if you're going to use tape. Yeah I don't like how they don't include dust stickers with it. Also you can go to dollar store and use kids stickers. They also work for the cheap alternative. I'd go with that option.
I followed video to the T and bubbles from air pockets 24 hours later where gone. Make sure your hands clean and not in a dusty room. Bright light will help too. Because you will see dust beforehand. One more thing do it on a table.

Really surprised not many folks on here have used the Tech21 bullet shield screen protector on the Note 8 .
Feedback would be nice.

They're not the most popular I suppose? Some people there customer service rubbed them the wrong way. But you see most us who have that brand stand by it.

Paint chipping after using official oneplus case in the box?

Is the picture attached paint chipping?(the small dots)
+1 happens the same to me.
I can't take a pick tho, I can't clean it.

Yes, it's happening for me too!
Same... looks like original case destroyed back paint for our phone.
I am using a Spigen case since I got the phone and I get the same result.
We can talk about this with OnePlus's support for a replace? We spent a lot of money for this smartphone and is absurd that the original cover damage our 5T
Hi all. I just chatting with support about chipping paint. They agree to repair under guarantee but they will inspect the phone for physical damage such as bumping the phone, dropping the phone, rubbing the phone to any sharp object etc. If they find any damage i will pay for repair.
Update: Support will not repair under guarantee. They say its normal when using case. So this is gonna cost.
When I visited the OP service center in Ahmedabad India for flashing stock rom, they offered me free replacement for the back panel and did not charged anything.

i got it replaced TWICE... For the same phone without additional costs or warranty... Will advice for putting a wrap on it preserves the beauty and feel too
Yes. I visited oneplus care and after some fight, they replaced it for free. Surprisingly they gifted me a new sandstone original case for all the issues occured
Going to try and get mine replaced but it was not purchased from Oneplus, I noticed this some time ago and it is getting worse
I have fewer than 4-5 "scratches" after having 2-3 different rubber/silicon cases since I bought the phone the day it came out (1 year ago).
since the cases aren't clear, I had not even noticed.
happened to me also and i changed the cover. now its happening to the slider which i rarely use. haha!
Happened to mine as well. I am out of warranty now but will see if they will fix it. At first I thought it was some residue but, it is the same issue as everyone from the case provided in the box.
Did anyone try to get it replaced after the warranty?
I did realise the scratches were getting worse even with use with a case ?
