Freeze on screen rotate - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

For a while now, my note will freeze on screen rotate.
In the beginning it will unfreeze after 2, 3 seconds but in time it will take longer and longer (sometimes 10 seconds or more) until at some point when it will restart by itself.
After restart everything is fine for a few hours but it will start freezing again sooner or later.
It's running stock Oreo with Nova launcher.
It's not rooted or anything else.
Any ideas?
Thank you

I have no ideas, but it wows me, what stupid problems some users are experiencing. It shouldn't be happening.

First off, try disabling Nova launcher & see if the issue is gone. If not try booting to safe mode & test again.

Ok, i'll try switching to the stock launcher for a while.
Time to do some reading for safe mode

[Q] Unusable phone, phone freezes and launcher restarts constantly

I wish I could explain better what I did, but I can't figure out what it might be.
I am running Captivate rooted, mostly stock 2.2 with a modded camera app, and sideloaded apps allowed (for the Amazon market). The behavior is this:
Phone takes about 5 minutes to boot, was previously booting in maybe 1-2 minutes before launcher comes up. Launcher loads and i have a slow but usable phone for 30 seconds then phone freezes, and maybe a few minutes later, launcher will restart. this whole time, i am getting double vibrate every few seconds, like something is freezing/crashing in the background (that's my best guess). I disabled all Widgets in both launchers and it does not hookup via USB once it freezes, but will charge.
This is happening with Samsung TWlauncher and with LauncherPro. Thinking this was a LauncherPro issue, I switched default launcher to TW, but same behavior occurred. I also uninstalled LauncherPro, but still no change in behavior for default launcher. I would like to try to get back to a usable phone, or if worse comes to worse, get my data off the phone before reinstalling either stock, CM7, etc. I do not have a phone recovery as I could never seem to get the clockwordmod recovery to install, so I only have reset user settings as an option from default recovery mode.
The only thing I can remember doing when this started was changing LauncherPro memory presets to see if it would stop restarting often, so I thought maybe LauncherPro was the issue, but it does not appear to be.
I reinstalled LP during a few hour period of usability, but then it occurred again and it took all day to have the right moment of unlocking my phone and getting to be able to uninstall LP before it froze again. If I wait too long to unlock, it is frozen until I restart or pull battery and try again at first bootup before the launcher goes crazy.
My main question is this:
Is there a way to determine which app is causing the problem, pull logs, etc. when the phone is off, and does not connect on USB (when it's frozen)?
If not, is there a way to pull data under same circumstances? (I'm guessing this is tied into the first answer)
If these all fail, I guess I will probably go to CM7 and try that out, but I have a hard time finding out what known issues there are as it still appears in unofficial status, since there's no downloads from the Cyanogenmod site.
Any help or advice is greatly appreciated. This has been a hard one to search for, so if anyone knows of other instances of situations like this, I would be glad to see what else was encountered. If I have this in the wrong forum, please forgive me.

Frequent freezes requiring reboot?

After upgrading my stock turbo to the OTA 5.1.1 I've been experiencing wake locks or frozen screens about twice a day. It seems to happen when the lock screen is activated or when I quickly turn off and then on the screen.
I've wiped the partition twice and don't know what else to try. I'm using L Launcher full time but I reverted back to the stock launcher and the same thing happened within a few hours so I swapped back.
Is there some debugging log hiding somewhere?
Thanks!

Occasional Unresponsiveness

My usually rapid, excellent Tab S2 is occasionally unresponsive when I wake it and I was wondering what is the best way to troubleshoot this?
It's running the latest firmware (non rooted) and occasionally on wake it freezes for a few seconds until I close the app then is slow for a couple of minutes. A reboot normally sorts it.
I've been tempted to do a factory reset but can't be bothered with all the hassle of reinstalling and was hoping someone would help me learn how to get to the bottom of these sort of problems.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Severe lag when using after its been off for a while.

My Galaxy Tab S2 seems to lag for a couple of minutes when I first go to use it. This is after I've left it just on the side for a few hours or overnight (not from boot-up).
When I try to open an app it freezes then a few seconds later it does what it was supposed to do then it freezes again. I force close all but this doesn't really help until I've done it a few times.
I wasn't sure if this was something to do with the built in auto Wifi off so switched that off and it seemed to improve it slightly but it still happens. I tried using some auto WiFi off apps instead but they didn't even work.
After this first couple of minutes it then works fine. I uninstalled all apps and it was ok but it wasn't before long it came back. It wasn't particularly noticeable after any specific app.
Is there a way to analyse what is causing this lag in the background?
I'm experiencing the same problems. I wonder what could be causing this?

I've noticed this for a long time. If you use a system monitor you will notice that the Disk reading will be at 100% for some minutes, leaving the tablet unresponsive.
I don't know how to identify which apps are doing the reading.

First thing I do now is kill all running apps but still get some lag. A persistent app apparently.

Phone randomly reboots or powers off

Running latest stock firmware and at least once a day my phone reboots automatically. Auto restart is turned off. I have it on the table and next thing it just reboots. One time this week it turned off completely. Has anyone else experienced this and or know of a solution? Thanks
I cannot confirm anything you describe. It's either caused by a bad or disabled application or possibly faulty hardware. Test your phone at Safe Mode to see if the restarts stop. If so, you need to find out which app is causing it.

Can confirm. It happens to me as well. Not everyday. It is completely random. Happened twice today. After I charged it. Don't know if charging it is connected somehow to the issue. Every android phone I buy just has some odd quirks. No more. After this one I'm done. You barely see any problems like this with an iPhone.

You using a SD card? If so try pulling it.
If you did any firmware update flashes since getting it, factory reset.
At least clear the system cache...
A hard reset may also get it.

Thanks to all for the replies. Something i have noticed (and i hope i don't jinx myself now) is that since i turned off the "auto optimise daily" feature, i haven't had a single reboot or power off.

Yeah leave that junk turned off... power management is known to cause erratic behavior as well.
How it's going with the random reboots? Do you still have a problem or turning off "auto optimise daily" fixed it?

This is not normal behavior.
If it's under warranty now might be the time... at least get the documentation started.
Have you cleared the system cache?
Try in Safe Mode as pointed it maybe a 3rd party apk; power management apps and 3rd party launchers are prime candidates. Anything that runs in the background when the screen is off.
Factory reset time...
If that doesn't get try replacing the sim card and removing the SD card if any.
If you still can't find it try reflashing the firmware.
It maybe a hardware failure... and intermittent ones can be the hardest to track down.

I think it actually turned out to be Nova launcher causing the problem. I uninstalled it and turned back on auto optimise on Saturday and i haven't had a reboot since.

Nova launcher premium or free and what version?
I'm using Nova Prime, I haven't noticed any reboots but there has been occasions where the fingerprint scanner was switched back to code unlock like it had just booted up. I'll check up time if it happens again.
Latest free from Play store. 6.2.18.
I might try amd reinstall it later to see if the issue reoccurs, but there has been no reboots since i uninstalled it thankfully.

This is normal security behaviour in Android and it happens every few days. It has nothing common with used launcher.

Ok, was it configured from scratch or via imported configuration from previous phone?

Might want to quit while you're ahead. A buggy 3rd party launcher is a sure fire way to crash and burn a Android OS. Boot looped twice by one on my stock Note 10+.
Take any noticable instability seriously...

No doubt you're absolutely right about that, but on the other hand, with the Nova launcher, it's not normal behavior. Nova is rock solid, I've used it for years on various devices, and there's never been a problem.

While I found that it's not better than the native One UI launcher, Nova Launcher didn't boot loop my 10+ into oblivion... lol, a definite plus.
What I found was it was slower and that I lost some features I liked with One UI. It used a lot more battery but some of that was due to tweaking it, but even when I wasn't adjusting it's settings it's battery usage was high. One UI unlike some of Sammy's past launchers is a fast and very stable launcher... hard to beat.
Samsung's are very customizable in their stock configuration, other makes not near as much so.
So yeah I get why you might want use a 3rd party launcher and Nova is at the top of the candidates. Not being at the mercy of every new flavor of OS and native launcher is also more harmonious and productive... so yeah, I get it.
I don't use Nova launcher and I have random reboots. What I' ve noticed is that the reboots were happening when I wasn't using the phone for a while. Also when the phone turned back on an application was active in notification curtain. In the beginning it was TuneIn although I had it force stopped from settings everytime I was using it. After I uninstalled it I didn't had any incident for quite a while. Two days ago I had a lot of reboots in a day. The app working after the reboots was always Samsung Accessory Service, I have Galaxy Watch 3 also. My guess is that the UI is trying to kill an app and it crashes. When I find some time I 'll try a factory reset with fresh install cause my current set up is based on settings from my previous phone (LH V30).
