Hiya everyone,
I've been looking to replace my old Nokia Lumia 630 for some time now, for something a little better this time. Recently I discovered the OEM Chinese phone market quite recently and I found the Xiaomi Mi 5, which looks amazing.
From what I've seen it offers flagship-like specs (Snapdragon 820, 3GB RAM and a fairly decent looking camera) for a ridiculously cheap price, which is great but is also worrying too. Does this mean Xiaomi has compromised the build quality of the phone, the software or even the internals to keep the device as cheap as possible?
In the end you get what you pay for, but do you get that little bit better with the Mi 5???
Thanks,
Roberto

Reviewers only tend to use the phone for a couple of days to a week unfortunately, so online reviews aren't always the best to look at if you want to know the long term performance of a phone.
Also is CM13 working well? I'd be worried to try it out as it would void the warranty with the seller I'm looking at and since its only recently just been released, it would be bound to have bugs.
I've been using the MI 5 for about a month now and I really like it. I was coming from a Samsung S6 and I think that the MI 5 is every bit as good. The things that I really like about it are the bright screen, one of the most visible outside that I have seen, and the slim body and the light weight. I say go for it, I don't think that you will be disappointed.,

Mi5 is innocent one but it's packed with crappy global ROM.

Have you tried any of the other ROMs such as the Chinese ROM, the xiaomi.eu ROM, or even CM13 ? I think the supplier I'm looking at ships the phone with the Chinese ROM, and to avoid voiding any warranty I'd probably have to stick with that.

I tried every ROM except CM13. I have downloaded but still not flashed. Still not getting interested until it reaches a reasonable stability. But I am seeing good progress with that dev As yesterday also an updated version released.

That's cool, but I would also be a bit uneasy on flashing a custom ROM onto the device. Just out of interest whats xiaomi.eu like? I hear a lot of good reviews on it so, if I do get it, I'd ask the reseller if they would flash that ROM.

I am wondering why you are quite rigid for installing custom ROM. As long as you are outside China, I wonder how will you claim warranty.

You won't void the guarantee by unlocking the bootloader / flashing custom rom / flashing TWRP or whatever. You can always flash an official MIUI rom with flash_all_lock.bat script and it will lock your phone and return to factory settings. Nobody will be able to see that you modified your device's firmware.

I live in the UK, so Xiaomi's warranty would be completely useless. I meant the 12 month warranty I'd get of the reseller (which would probably be eglobalcentral.co.uk)

I don't really know how to flash a ROM at the moment, never-mind changing scripts inside of the phone. Knowing my luck I will probably break it xD.
But thanks for letting me know anyway

No, I live behind a hill that doesn't have the best signal and that's the main reason that I bought the phone, I think that the Snapdragon chip has a much better phone radio than Samsung's Exynos chip that we get in Samsung phones in Asia. With the MI 5 my dropped call problem disappeared. Mine has the global ROM on it and I'm very satisfied with it. I didn't care for the keyboard so I changed that but all of my apps work perfectly as well as notification LEDs, etc.
Do your homework, research the phone, read other peoples comments/experience and decide on your own. Don't end up like the losers on this thread --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-5/how-to/xiaomi-mi5-how-dream-phone-mi5-nightmare-t3365799, They got fished in because of all the hype going around and only to find out that you get what you pay for.
I got the phone because of the cost and I might say its a good phone for the price.
I have run all the roms on my mi5. I too came from a galaxy s6 and I love the mi5. The Chinese Rom works great but obviously there are parts of it in Chinese. I briefly tried the global Rom but had issues with it (can't remember what they were). I am now using cm13 and in my opinion it's currently the best Rom available. Battery life is phenomenal. As for the thread about people having problems with build quality etc, I haven't seen any of that. As with all forums it tends to only be the people with problems that post. As for warranties I think you may have problems claiming no matter who the seller is.
In my opinion you won't regret getting an mi5 and you should put cm13 on it (it's extremely easy to flash roms). Apply for your unlocked boot loader right now (you don't need to have the phone to apply) so you have it if you need it.

There is always a risk when flashing any electronic device whether its a phone or not but the risk is minimal. I have done loads of phones over the years and never had an issue. I havent noticed any functions not working with cm13. There have been some posts about soft home button not working but I never used it anyway (not even sure what it is they are talking about TBH) so as far as my use is concerned everything works perfectly. The battery life on cm13 is better than any of the official roms and everything is very smooth. Remember you need to get the bootloader unlocked by requesting it from xioami (think it took about a week if i remember correctly).

After two weeks of normal usage, I would say no. I originally got the phone with Global Rom pre-installed and have since then installed China Rom (non dev version) and recently flashed it with the latest stable EU Rom. I also have the latest TWRP recovery and SuperSU.
The main reason why I got this phone is because of the ability of flashing other Roms.

Hi all,
Im new to the forums and I'm after some serious information on the OnePlus 3 and Android in general.
I currently have a iPhone 6 Plus (128GB) and (in theory) could have upgraded to the iPhone 7/Plus as I buy my phones every two years outright.
I've been toying with the idea of getting the OnePlus 3T and passing my iPhone to the Mrs as she has an iPhone 5 (16GB). I really don't fancy forking out £819 to get the equivalent of my current iPhone when I could get a OP3T for £439 (128GB).
My options are keep my iPhone or get the OP3T and would like your opinion.
I'm sure someone on here could provide me with an idea of what Android is like as I've never used it before and what it's like switching from iOS.
I must admit that I'm more invested with Google than Apple. I do have an iPad and MacBook but I don't use iCloud and I'm not too bothered about iMessage and FaceTime as Whatsapp is what I tend to use and I use Google for most services (Gmail, Drive, Contacts, Calendars, Maps and Photos).
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Andy
For what you described imho oneplus 3t and iphone7 are overkill...
If you want a good stock-ish android experience you can go for op3t. It is not one of those phones where if you are not satisfied somebody will tell you "of course, as an android newbie you should have gone for smartphone xy".
For some reason that I can not grasp with my stupid little mind some people who switched from iOS to Android just don't like the UI and find it too complicated. While I don't understand how a simple menu can be complicated at all, I honestly know that feeling, since whenever I have to use a Macbook I have an irresistable urge to throw it against a wall and then to burn the house down.
What I am saying is, noone can tell you if you will like it.
i went from iphone 6s+ > nexus 6p > op3t
I just switched over from a 7plus. Its not difficult at all to get used to, you get all the same or almost all the same apps as in iOS. The layout for the menus is easy to get used to as well.

Well I have checked my iPhone and have used 101GB with 19GB remaining so I would like to a phone with 128GB ideally.

Why did you switch from a 7 Plus to the OP3T?
I'm intrigued to know.
Just suggestion.. U can try very low entry Android phone or other older stock Android phone like nexus series to taste the pure stock Android experience before u spend £430 .
One of my friend did that way. It helped. Now he is considering to buy OP3T
i have both phones (7+ and 3T), and considering your current status where you use more google services than apple, i think you will be just fine with 3T as long as you are okay to learn the way android do things. in my opinion 3T has better battery life, and could do much more if you want to tinker a little bit. However 7+ also has it's strong points, like front facing speaker, and camera. for amateur like me that just need a good camera at all kind of condition to take pictures of my kids, 7+ just did the job in auto mode.
I've never owned an iProduct, so you can take my words with a grain of salt. But, my experience so far with the 1+3T is all positive. If you do switch, just be sure to give yourself some time and patience to adjust. Honestly, if you stick around here, maybe you'll come to appreciate Android as much as we do.

I don't really have a concrete reason for switching.. Just had an itch to get this phone and once the 128gb one was available for ordering I just ordered it. After using this phone I am completely in love with it, the only thing I miss from the iPhone is iMessage.

I went to OP3T after 2 years with iphone 6 and 6s, I don't miss anything about those two phone because I mostly use google app and youtube. And OP3T gave me far better battery life than ip6 and ip6s, but in your case it's a little different as you have the plus. I was a diehard android user before, so it's easy for me to make decision. Now, Huawei p10 is in my radar except this OP3T hasn't aged yet
I think what is stopping me is that I have always had iPhone's from the 3G and I'm unsure of using another OS.
Also, I noticed on the SGS7 that my friend has that some games were laggy in comparison to my iPhone and that he said it's because of Touchwiz?
I did have a mess around briefly with his SGS7 but not long enough to draw a conclusion about Android as a whole but I didn't really care for that phone.

It will be better if u play around op3t before you buy, and see if games lag or something's you use work without lag or what.
I love this device, but hate iOS so that would be one sided thing.
So some of your friends might have one plus, you should get hands on one for a few hours.
Since everyone has different uses pattern and preference, at last everything comes to what you like or what you don't.
Don't know where you are from, but if u r from Delhi and want to get hands on, pm me.

I'm from the UK and OnePlus is somewhat unknown to a lot of people (well, to most of my friends anyway). A lot of my friends have iPhone's too.
Getting hold of a OP3T is quite hard, I know they have them in O2 shops here but they aren't connected to the internet and I wouldn't be able to use it like it was my own.

Well you can find a lot of guys from UK here in the forum's with op3t.
Maybe now you have mentioned somebody might come to your rescue
And I heard in EU all purchases can be returned under certain amount of time.
Purchase one, use it, if don't like them return it.
And purchase through card, cause PayPal don't have buyer protection.

Mostly I can modify it to my likes.
Get bored of same UI for long.
That's one reason.
Other is for music, I keep it as I like with viper and other audio mods.
And moreover when I use iOS it feels like I lack many options android provides.
Like network settings, hotspots, downloading music, and getting to do backups locally, not on cloud or PC.

well to be honest i went 6p to the 6s+because i was in egypt with my lil brother who is a iphone freak for 2 months he taunted me, so i gave it a try, and after 6 months i wanted to destroy all things apple.
Apple customer service caters to the n00b customer base that they serve. I would literally pose questions to them that they had no answers to. on iOS you can't even arrange photos by date taken or large photos to small photos . once photos are out of order in ur albums there's no way to fix them even if the exif data is on point. bluetooth sucked on ios, it would take 2 mintues for the bluetooth to turn on, and hand offs from music to phone calls was horrendous up to 30 seconds.
It's an inferior product imo, it's made for people who aren't technically inclined, that's not really to say they are stupid but there's a reason the "____ for dummies" book line made millions
The reason I have always had an iPhone was because it always did what I wanted it to do.
People I know who have had Android in the past moved to iOS because they were fed up of their phones breaking for one reason or another.
Here, I can literally take my iPhone a few hundred yards from work into an Apple Store to be fixed if needed which is another bonus.
I take it that has all changed?
Is there anything major that Android can do that iOS can't?
Hi,
I was looking to buy a P10 new as my new phone. I am hoping to get a couple of years out of it. I just wanted to know if it was worth it to buy this phone now when it's already 2 almost 3 years old. I'm planning on flashing stock on it with OpenKirin, is that the best idea or is there a different or better stock rom out there? Are there any major problems with it I should know? Any input or advice would be greatly appreciated!!
Do they still make new P10s? I'd look for some newer flagships like P20.
Admittedly an older device, but still unlockable (you can still find them running EMUI 5 on eBay and the like, and old stock is likely to be running that as well - check the software version!), cheap to repair if it gets damaged, and unlike the vast majority of newer flagships, it's not a gigantic device. (There is something to be said for a 5" display sometimes.)
I've got two of them; one got wedged into a car door and bent without the display breaking, still working, though it needs a new rear cover.
If you find it for <$125 USD, it's probably worth it. Much more and I'd be hesitant.
The only reason i would go for it is if i really want a huawei notchless small display.

Thanks guys for all your replies it really helps knowing what i'm getting myself into! Just one more question about OpenKirin. I really hate EMUI so i'm gonna flash a stock rom, is OpenKirin the best one to do that with or should I go with another rom?
So for some background, I'm in the USA and I've started to collect some older/cheaper/weirder smartphones. Ever since the early 2010s, I've always had Android. However, I've never done anything with rooting, custom ROMs, bootloaders, any of that. A shameful gap in my knowledge and experience, but for most phones it hasn't been an issue that I've felt like pursuing.
I recently picked up an Axon M for a decent price. AT&T version, but it's GSM unlocked. I don't game on Android, so on paper everything seemed alright. Coming from the BlackBerry KEYOne, going down an Android version is a bit of a hit but otherwise I figured this phone would be a good choice for me. And at first, it really was an awesome experience. I actually enjoyed having the dual-screen way more than I thought I would. This phone also gave me a reason to keep auto-rotate on, which usually I have off. Giving up Autofill kinda sucks, but I enjoy working around limitations.
Ended up putting my SIM card in it and everything, but after a few days it seems like it was slowing down. Using Nova Launcher, and of course I had maybe 20 apps that I had installed, but the KEYone seems to handle the same setup just fine, so I'm not sure what to think.
The battery looks like it's not too hard to change, so should I change the battery? Do I get the Chinese version and see if I can get it back to English? Is there some other version that might work better for me? Do I have to mess with custom ROMs to try to get Android 8? Should I just stick with 7? I really want to daily drive this phone, and when it works I really do love it, I think more than I would love a V60 or G8X DS. So what can I do?

There is no android 8 for this phone. Heck, you can't even root it yet. I doubt it would be daily drivable after a year or so, since I had mine for almost 2 years and it started to slow down just as you have conveyed. It is a unique phone, and this is the reason to have it. I do hope that someday we can get root and a rom on this phone
Hiya, I been looking for a smaller phone for months now, im on a budget, and my best option for me seems to be the 5a 5g. My concern is that Google won't update it that much longer, i think i read until november 2023. I'm alright with that as long as i can do it myself with custom ROMs. My question is, do these phones have a good history with custom ROM development?
I'm also a bit confused, are all 5a's, 5g? Or is that different phones? If so they also use different roms i assume, I don't know how many 5g's there are, but I don't want a niche phone that not many owns and won't be developed much for, so is the 5g a safe bet to that way? If not any suggestions for another phone?
Pixel 6 aint an option, i just dont like it,7 is too expensive.
I also looked at Xiaomi mi 9se its cheap, small but getting old and i feel like the pixel 5a5g is a much better phone.
Any thoughts and input is very welcome

Pixels in general are great development platforms. They're also Treble compliant so even after Google stops pushing system updates, you'll still be able to run a GSI release.

I'm with you there, I didn't upgrade from my Pixel 2 until the Pixel 5 came out. I'm not particularly impressed with the 6 or 7; I want a simple slate device like my 5, not something flashy and fancy.

Thank you for your answer. Sounds like im going to buy me a 5a then.
What is a GSI release? And system updates, does that also involve new android versions like from 13 to 14 and so on?
I looked at some of these phones used, i see a few of them have burn in on the screen, is this a weakness on this phone or does it pretty much go for all phones? any way to lower the risk for my phone getting burn in?
Thanks again

I looked at some of these phones used, i see a few of them have burn in on the screen, is this a weakness on this phone or does it pretty much go for all phones? any way to lower the risk for my phone getting burn in?

All OLED screens are susceptible to burn in. It's one of the drawbacks of OLED. Unfortunately, pretty much all mobile screens are OLED, so burn in will always be a possibility.
Burn in is caused by having a static image on the screen for long periods of time. Keep the screen off while you aren't using it, and don't leave it on something that doesn't move.
Thanks again for you answers.
Im going to be looking for a 5a, either new or used and i hope its a phone i can enjoy for a long time.
did you dismiss the 6a along with the 6? the 6a size isn't that much different than the 5a.
the 6a has a much longer published support life than the 5a, because it moves to google's chipset. it's also selling unlocked direct from google at $299 here in the US, cheaper than my 5a was in the first year.
I picked up a used 5a on eBay for under 200$ USD not a bad phone there really a lot of custom roms that I can find beside the basic asop ones and pixel experience
