Keyboard covers all text input - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

I'm using GBoard but I've switched to default Samsung keyboard and I get the same thing. Any app where the writing is on the lower end of the screen the page does not shift up so I can see what I'm typing. This is becoming a huge annoyance. Makes editing/correcting near impossible. It's been this way for a couple weeks now. I'm thinking something got changed or deleted somehow, but I can't remember doing anything. Any system settings that might affect this?. Just don't really know where to begin looking. I am rooted.

swype or ultra keyboard?

i tried installing both of these apps and neither work.
is there anything out there to make em work? or is there another swype style keyboard?
i am TERRIBLE at typing. its just not at receptive of a touch screen as the ipad. but i like the android way way more.
its like i have to press harder to get a key pressed.
thanks in advance
EDIT : also love the feature to type from ultra keyboard with your voice. obviously voice search works on the tab, but im loooking to do emails and such with voice too.. possible?
thanks
Have you run the touch calibration?
i have not... ill search around for it in the menu and clockworkmod
i did the screen calibration. didnt really do anything. its just possible the screen just isnt quite as responsive if i would like.
swype or ultrakeyboard is much more important to me
thanks
It's Swype for me...
I'm a big fan of Swype. I use it on my Droid phone and cannot live without it. I also have it on my gtablet, and continue to love it, although swyping on the large screen in landscape mode takes a little getting used to. Swyping in portrait mode is much better. However, I still like it over others.
Installing Swype is not a simple thing, since the normal install apps check in with Swype headquarters, where you'll be told you are not a phone, so goodbye. And many of the apks for the app will say your screen is not the right size. But search this site, and you will find many threads on the subject, including the link to the proper apk. Basically, you will have to google for a specific version of swype, and then track it down yourself.
It is not impossible. But worth the search.
I know you didn't ask about it, but IMO thumb keyboard is the best for our g tabs

I tried this, and while I like the large keys, I don't like the fact that it takes 100% of the screen up, absolutely useless for IMS or emails or almost anything else. I want something similar to the gingerbread keyboard but with taller, more square like buttons. I've tried using the TapaTalk or whatever it is on my VeganGinger install but it doesn't work at all.

Before I switched to thumb i was using SwiftKey, which was free on amazon Store not too long ago. It reminds me of the g bread kb. I wanted exactly what you wanted, a bigger g bread kb, but now I'm happy with thumb. Good luck.

The one-touch calibration app in this subforum did not work for me, but the calibrate.ini trick (where you put a blank file named calibration.ini in the root of your microSD card and reboot) did work for me. I was stabbing at icons left and right before (especially the home soft button, ARGH!), wanting to toss the Tab out the window, but now it's as sensitive as my Evo's screen.
Swype is easy to install if you find the right file. It doesn't really work all that well on a 10" in landscape mode though. You have to move your hand around too much to make it effective.
I have been using Thumb Keyboard from the Market. I can type with only my thumbs while holding the tablet in my hands. In landscape mode it puts each side of the keyboard close to the sides so the keys are easily reachable. In portrait mode I have it set to just give me the normal full keyboard. It works great and I highly recommend checking it out. It costs a buck or 2.
My only problem with Swype, at least the version I have, is that you cannot turn off the dictionary lookup auto correct. So if the word isn't in the dictionary (websites, usernames, etc...) swype will try to autocorrect to what it thinks it should be, or pop up the guesser window with nothing even close.
Also swype uses up the whole screen for many imput windows which isn't really needed on a tablet, but whatever.
I use SlideIT 3.2, works perfectly.
i just downloaded thumb keyboard. when i go in to language and keyboard, it wont let me populate the check box, enabling it.
it gives me the lil warning, then just wont check.
any help please?

Both versions in the Marketplace say for Android 3.0...just guessing.
tried swype but using slideit
I tried swype. i got it installed, then moved to /system/app but it wouldn't work other than as a normal keyboard. tried slide-it and it works great.

Text correction way too aggressive

Anyone else have serious issue with how damn aggressive the LG G2's text correction is? I've tried it on every level all the way down to mild, and it still insists on replacing words that I have spelled correctly with entirely different words which is frustrating as hell. I understand spell correction and text prediction, however this is something different. I could attempt to send the text "the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" and it might decide to replace "fox" with "cat" and "jumps" with "flies". It's insane. Even if I have spelled the word correctly the damn thing just up and decides I must be trying to say something else, and I end up having to go back and basically retype the word and then force it to use what I typed. I tried typing $20 and it replaced it with "2am"!! What the hell!

I've been experiencing that too. Frustrating as hell. I ended up installing a modified google keyboard that has the number row since that's what I really like about the stock one. Works great plus they're themed.

Does the ROM you use, use the G3 keyboard like XDABBEB'S? If so then try the G2 keyboard. I had the same issue until I started using G2 one.

Thank you, this was the problem. Thing is, I even installed the Google Keyboard from the Play Store and it also replaced a lot of words, but I didnt trial it long enough to notice any real difference. The G2 keyboard seems to be working perfectly, only replacing typos and not full blown making auto-suggestions.

UI stuttering caused by accessibility permissions

The problem
Hi, I've been experiencing significant interface stuttering whenever an application has been granted accessibility permissions.
Video of the problem
Here is a video demonstrating the issue, read below for technical information: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFVKCx5zVmQ
Facts about the problem
Ok so here's what I know so far:
It doesn't matter which service you grant access to, it will lag the same. I've tried LMT, Swipe Navigation, LastPass, TalkBack, and a few more I can't even remember at the moment.
It doesn't matter what ROM or Kernel you are on. I've tried Euphoria with LK and Hydra, rooted stock with stock kernel and LK, and Benzo with whatever the default Benzo kernel is. Doesn't make a single difference.
It does not only affect Relay for Reddit comment collapsing. It also affect Google Newsstand's mini/big card transition, news source transitions, Google Now transitions, basically anywhere there is an animation in the OS I can notice the stuttering.
Anyone else experience this? Any ideas? It is driving me crazy.
I'm not experiencing that
I've used custom roms/kernels almost all of them in the development forum lol
I wonder if maybe it's a particular accessibility itself? I feel like since its needing to be authorized in accessibility that it might be conflicting with something else, who knows?
People usually try booting the phone into safe mode and seeing if maybes its a third party app?
Thats my 2 cents! Hopefully it helps
It has nothing to do with a specific accesibility from what I can feel, stuttering occurs regardless of the app.
I have full wiped several times to test and can't find a solution.
Does anyone else experience this or have any ideas?
Can anybody duplicate this?
Should I RMA?

I've done this when using LK/Hydra, but I am not running stock kernel. None of the adjustments made any noticeable difference unfortunately
I really hate to bump this but the video only has 16 views and I'd love someone else to confirm or deny the same behavior when granting an app accessibility permissions.
If this is common behavior I won't RMA, but if no one else can recreate this I'm going to.
Oh, another thing I noticed: you don't have to test it in an app like Relay for Reddit, you can also do it in the Chrome browser on a site that has a lot of information. What I've noticed is that, when accessibility is granted to any app, visiting XDA forums becomes almost unusable. It takes FOREVER to scroll and when I can scroll it is extremely choppy. Disable the accessibility permission? Completely solves the problem.
You are NOT crazy. I have been searching, seeing if anyone else had this problem. I am using a completely stock Nexus 6 (not rooted), and because of the screen size I have been tinkering with apps to help with one handed use (like pie controls, handy soft keys, etc). They also require accessibility to be enabled. Whenever I install them, I notice (about once every 6-7 times) that when I open my app drawer on Nova launcher, it will half freeze, half stutter. Most of the time it's fine, but once every few times it happens. I haven't paid too much higher attention to whether jt causes stuttering in other apps, but it drives me nuts and so I uninstall the app and go back to stretching my thumb to use the stock nav keys. Wish this would get fixed. Kind of unacceptable for a Nexus - that kind of stuttering is why I don't like using Samsung devices.
Here is the Swipe Navigation developer saying it is definitely a thing in Lollipop with accessibility settings. (screenshot from Play Store comments on Swipe Navigation app). I wish someone could figure this out - I guess we have to wait for Google to do that?
I am using PieControl Pro and I do believe it makes the animations in the Play story stutter when I open a page and use the back button to go back to the app overview. The Play store was never completely smooth no matter what, but when I disable accessibility for PieControl Pro, it becomes a little better. So yeah, accessibility does seem to affect UI performance. I'm on stock Android 5.1 with Franco Kernel.

Thank you! I was losing my mind tryingbto figure this out so I opened a support ticket with Google play store and the person who handled my case was able to reproduce it and has made a note of it (whether this means there's an official bug report or not I don't know). He also said this issue cannot be used to RMA, since it wouldn't do anything anyway.
Unless someone can confirm that they DO NOT have this issue.
Im using swipe navigation and I'm noticing stutter as well. Wonder why this happens. Took me a while to figure it out.
Would you mind pointing me to the Google page where you reported this? I would like to star it as well, and follow their updates.
As a follow up, today I decided to tinker around and install pie again. Since the Nova app drawer animation is what I always notice stuttering first, I decided to just turn Nova animations off. Then, I went into Android settings, developer options, and reduced the three animation settings to 0.5x. I may just be seeing what I want to see, but the UI hasn't seemed to stutter with Pie enabled in accessibility (yet). Going to try this for a day or two.
I've gotten the same issues with Lastpass.
Lastpass even states on their site that it's a lollipop issue.

Sorry if this counts as bringing up an old thread, although it's not THAT old
Anyway, I've come here just to corroborate all your findings and confirm that I am also experiencing this ugly bug. A few days ago I installed Greenify which, among other things, asked to enable Accessibility features for it. Thinking nothing of it I did as requested. Next day I start noticing some UI lagginess and choppiness, which was especially noticeable to me in Relay for Reddit since I use it a lot (too much for my own good in fact) and I distinctly remember it had very smooth scrolling between comments just a few days ago. In the mean time, I completely forget I've granted Greenify accessibility control so I went on a mission trying to fix this inexplainable, sudden UI choppiness, by trying to flash a different kernel, trying different governors, dirty flashing my ROM, trying all the other tweaks, and finally doing a factory reset and flashing the stock ROM all over again (luckly I did make a nandroid). Nothing helped. I was at my wits end when I tried searching the app's subreddit for anyone experiencing the same issue and found a comments saying accessibility features were to blame. I felt stupid for not researching it before. However, this bug is very insidious as it just creeps up on you, with no reason. I also don't know how can accessibility features affect UI smoothness this way.
Yes, hopefully will be fixed in M maybe? I haven't checked around to see if those who have installed M preview have checked to see if the bug has been fixed there. Fingers crossed.....
Not fixed in M. Everyone should go star the issue so it gets fixed!

Still isnt fixed ) But my lag rather appears when tapping on any app icon, then it highlights, then go lag, then opening animation starts.
Post this over on reddit and see if you can bring a bit more attention to the issue.

Note 8 is absolutely illiterate with keyboard autocorrect

I am having so many issues with my phone after the upgrade to Oreo.
GPS
GMaps
Autocorrect
No VoLTE
Poor wifi that will not switch to a stronger network
Etc
Etc
The autocorrect is simply abysmal. And no matter what anyone may give explanations for the phone behaving as illiterate as it does, there is, sorry, No excuse for it.
An iPhone 5 which is God knows how old, is almost flawless whilst typing.
This thing needs more backspace corrections than is imaginable. Why?
All the keyboards are just frustrating. Maybe SwiftKey is a little better than the rest. But still.
Let's not go into cache clearing, factory wipes, delete app data, all excuses for something that just doesn't work very well.
And paying the colossal amount for a phone that one has to make this many compromises is not acceptable.
Just not very happy with the Note 8.
Example. I typed this on the phone
Frustrating = fruatrating
Typed = tiypes
Compromises = cimpromisas (??)
Imaginable = imigatble (WT..!)
I use Gboard from Google for a keyboard, and have very fast pace of accurate swiping for text
Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk
I actually prefer Gboard to SwiftKey. But the word predictions and spellings were unacceptably wrong most of the time.
I don't use swiping or shortcuts or abbreviations whilst typing.
The etc etc part makes me think that you are totally dissatisfied with the phone, so yeah, you're really better off buying an other brand phone. This whining here will get you nowhere.
Just my 2 cents.

Agreed...
I've tried going back and forth to the Samsung keyboard. I found it was really good on the note 7 but on this phone it's rubbish..
I agree on the Google maps issue too, if I'm using it for sat nav, I might as well not.. it doesn't seem to locate me accurately.
For what it is, the phone shouldn't have these minor, but annoying issues.
Best keyboard imo is Fleksy, it has insane autocorrect and if the corrected word isn't the one you were looking for with a simple swipe you will get the right one 99% of the time unless you typed something completely wrong. I really love it, I've tried all of them but only with fleksy I can type correctly even by missing every single letter on a word

I've tried several, but the main three I've used are Gboard (absolutely terrible, but fast), Samsung's stock keyboard ( far better than Gboard, but still lacking in the autocorrect), and Swiftkey (absolutely the best autocorrect, but within the past few years became so bad it would freeze constantly. I wish Samsung or Google would buy Swiftkey and use their own keyboard with Swiftkey's autocorrect.

I can't help you with your other issues as I don't have any of those on my note, I've never used samsung keyboard since I always change my dpi and set it so small that keyboard is unusable. But I would advise you to try Fleksy, I find it it's really good but it does have a learning curve but I honestly type super fast with it. Or also Minuum if I'm not wrong has a really good auto correct with the english language. Not so good with italian, but I still feel Fleksy is far superior because of the swipe to change auto corrected word. Still, the learning curve can be tough for some, all my friends who tried it didn't like it because you kinda have to stick with it for a couple of days in order to really get used to the "gestures". But if you really hate the others try it

Totally Agree!
GBoard is the best, but the autocorrect is simply shocking!
Swiftkey is slow. Can it be speeded up? The key delay, I mean?
How can you sync words with gboard? My gboard unable to sync learned words, lost all of the words after every factory reset and know nothing like John Snow.
I like gboard but I 'am so annoyed because of that.
Backup all the data that is stored on your device. Then perform a hard factory reset but wipe the cache partition first in the Recovery Mode menu.

I was going to say I agree about the autocorrect, but I did some digging and discovered you have numerous options for improving it. Android 10 for Oneplus 7 Pro Sucks

Hi All,
So I have been trying to switch to android 10 couple times (3 exact) but because of it's bugs/annoyances it is really impossible to have it as a daily driver. Here are couple that I've found:
- bottom chin when keyboard is enabled (like really, what the hell. I know that for some folks that option is great and all, but it is making the keyboard unusable for me. I often touch the spot where the space bar should be and because of that writing seems very uncomfortable...
- LAG WHEN COMING BACK TO HOMESCREEN FROM APP - this is the biggest one for me. That problem occurs when you are using a custom launcher (like Nova, Evie etc.). Every time when you are coming from app to the homescreen, there is slightly delay in animation (like icons need some time to load...). That for me is biggest issue. Why do I need to withstand the lag in the system, when I have the fastest android smartphone on the planet?! Yet still i haven't found an solution for that (besides turning the animation completely off....)
If you don't have any those (or similar) problems and for you this update is gods gift then please don't respond....
I'am really disappointed with this Update and it seems that Oneplus is not going fix/change anything at all with it because they have already started rolling out the updates for Oneplus 6...
Feel free to comment on that topic
Thanks
Paweł
Just so you know the keyboard space is on every phone with Android 10, it is part of Googles implementation of gestures. It allows the use of gestures while the keyboard is open without typing or typing without triggering gestures.
Have you thought of using the stock luncher?...

Well Mr. Snow wolf, "sucks" is a relative term but I found 10.0.0 too buggy for me so I moved back to 9.5.11 and waited for another update.
10.0.1 solved all of the issues that bothered me except that annoying space under the keyboard. That made it so difficult to type for me. I understand the frustration there.
I stumbled upon this awesome fix yesterday here at xda. -100 did it best for me. The -75 was not enough removal of space.

I haven't noticed the animation lag on Nova (which I am using) you were speaking about so sorry I can't help with that. But I would genuinely be surprised if it wasn't ironed out in the next update which personally I would guess would be soon.
I hope this helps you. Hang in there man. There will be better days ahead.

It has been stated many times across many threads here at xda regarding the space between the keyboard and the bottom of the phone when using gestures (not a nav bar). When someone is not used to that space, users are hitting it accidentally instead of the spacebar creating many errors in typing. If you are using a navbar this does not apply. The keyboard you are using is not relevant either.

I have heard that this option also cut the toast notifications which is bad
I am just really disappointed with this update. I have thought that the company like Oneplus just can't roll out so unpolished firmware.
Right now iam afraid that going back to 10 will be just waste of time....
+ I also recall that I was not able to turn off the Facebook messenger vibrations without completely turning them off...

I have not had this issue with the toast notification. I also haven't had the animation issue either. There are users having no problems at all on 10 so maybe you need to investigate more.
My only issue was with the keyboard and that modification fixed it.
You have other companies literally breaking wifi and data with updates so if OnePlus adds a space under the keyboard which has a fix, I think most will think it's okay.
But I would at least try the keyboard fix instead of just complaining when others are giving solutions.
The Facebook thing I don't know because I don't use Facebook and that app is the worst app for a phone known to man.
I've noticed some apps crashing, but I'm rooted so it is what it is. Overall no major issues here
Android auto also fully broken.. it's a shame

Please do not disregard the problem only because for most people Android Auto works fine
Same thing with my issues with Android 10.
So after reinstalling it (4th time, full wipe every time ofc), I still have a delay when coming back to the homescreen from my Lanucher (it doesn't matter which 3rd party launcher I use). It's really pissing me off...
Once again, I do not understand comments like "for me everything works fine/ I can't see the problem". That's because either you are lucky one and Oneplus made a version of software especially for you (sarcasm on) or you are unable to see it... So please don't commit to this conversation if you don't have anything interesting to say. We all know that your version of Android 10 is pure perfect (please brag somewhere else)

Haha! This is hilarious! :good:
I saw that this thread was bumped and I was like, "this dude is still complaining?"
I'll report that I'm on ob5 and this is awesome. Android auto running well as is everything else. I guess I avoided the user error bug. I figure, if we have identical phones, and mine works great on the same software another is having issues with, it's either user error or maybe a bad phone and it needs to be replaced? Not sure.

What launcher are you using?
Oh, there's also no delay going to the homescreen on a proper setup. If you want to use gestures on a custom launcher, it has to have quickstep support and you need to use quickswitch to set it as the recents provider

What?
Honestly, I am surprised that nobody else has this problem with the delay or "notices" it. Of course I am happy for you! :good:
But unfortunately I also have this problem and it sucks really!
I have had the problem with Lawnchair, but the Nova Launcher also has this problem. Installing QuickSwitch does not help, it says that the launcher is not compatible with it...
That alone makes me think about either going back to Android 9 or trying out a custom Rom. But the problem seems to be widespread on Android 10.
Actually, the Stock Launcher is great, but I don't have the possibility to adjust icon sizes and grid. The presets are not enough. And I really don't like the drawer with this strange semi-transparent background.
At the end, i really hoping so that one or the either probem(s) will be fixed. I'm soo upset because of this crap but i should not be able to be so on such an high priced smartphone really...
Maybe you are mostly on Open Beta 5/6 and that lag is actually fixed?!..

Finally someone is on my side with this case. I have tried custom roms/latest betas but it doesn't change anything...
So the last option is to roll back to Good old android 9 ;(

I have started to notice the lag on launcher when unplugging the phone after using Android Auto.
What fixes it for me is to lock the screen and unlock it again a few times and then if will become responsive again.
This oddly (or not...) also coincides with some server side changes that Google pushed to Android Auto to enable the new features.
Adding here that the theme changes have just gone worse with 10.0.2 - theme follows the car, so if you use a dark theme and the car is in daytime, it will change the theme on the phone to bright when you exit Android Auto.
Also, the audio quality is pretty horrid and still not fixed, but I am experiencing with a workaround and will report when I have more concrete results
