When we can expext android P in our beloved Note 8❤
Probably in March or April.
I hope there will be a beta program though.
Or we can get a port of SX earlier? as galaxy 10 will be based on android P

Remember we just got Oreo so I would say not until the Note 10 is out. So over a year and that's pushing it.

Oreo came out to the public in August of 2017 we just got it that's almost a damn year after it came out. So Samsung is almost a year behind which is ridiculous. This is why I loved my Nexus phones but Google decided to go with the stupid Pixel brand of ugly phones.

Can you please explain to me what a port on SX or Note 9 means? I thought Google provided free Android through the AOSP. Why can't a developer develop a Note 8 from the raw AOSP code? Is it a too much work? If a port is code from SX or Note 9, does Samsung provide the source code, or does it have to be de-compiled from machine code?
I'm a newbie, and I'm just trying to understand where all this code comes from. I love custom ROMs and know how to install them, but I'm just trying to understand the infrastructure and where all this code comes from other than AOSP.

Sharing you a link where you can understand about the custom rom and building process. Any one can build a rom but he/she have basic knowledge about. Snapdragon chipset are very easy to crack but exynos is hardwork that why we dont much development here plus feature may get reduce in note 8 as custom rom while dilute note 8 features.
Pls read
https://www.androidauthority.com/build-custom-android-rom-720453/
Ripper, you forgot to mention to Huele Fello that AOSP also wouldn't have Samsung's Touchwiz to make the almighty S-Pen work. The Bixby button on the side would also be dead, as well as the Iris scanner,

And what is Treble going to help you in receiving the Pie update for the Note 8? Samsung doesn't officially support it on the Note 8, thus it's pointless. It might only help with custom ROMS with updates a little bit.

Oreo was released to the Note 8 in March of 2018. Not sure why Jason504 thinks we just got it in August??
It would also stand to reason that Android Pie will be released in a similar time table as Oreo. Possibly sooner since Samsung is planning the rollout in January 2019.
I don't know exactly when I got Oreo but it definitely wasn't in March. It was way after that it was May or June when I got the update for my phone. One of the last companies to push the update. Samsung sells more phones than any company and are almost dead last at pushing out updates?

So I was thinking about it, the Nexus 6 is nearing the end of it's line for updates, it was already confirmed to get Android N because there are developer preview for N released for the Shamu. Is this phone likely to get O in another year when that gets released? What do you guys think? It definitely has the specs I'm sure for it, but google may just choose to not do it officially. Out of all the Nexus phones, I REALLY like my 6! They never made one with a monster of a screen like this! Thoughts? Stay nerdy my friends.
Nobody knows, but probably. The Nexus 5 came out with Jellybean and it's getting N.

The N5 came out with KitKat...
OS updates: 24 months from date of release.
Security updates: 36 months from date of release OR 18 months from date of removal from the Play Store (whichever is longer).
The Nexus 6 will not get Android O, as it will be more than 24 months from the date of release. Of course, custom ROMs will mitigate that issue.

It was released with 4.4 kitkat, the rumor of it getting N MAY not be true however. I read a thing just today that just because there's a build in the works on the repo, doesn't mean it's final. The Nexus 4 had a build for I think it was KK or MM, but of course never actually got the update.

While most likely unofficial (not Google Released) it will get it. The great thing about nexus devices, they only die when you let them. Well to a point of course.
Google has given their Nexus devices a span of two years. correct me if I'm wrong but they do major updates to a device for at least two years, and then security updates for 3. by that logic the Nexus 6 will sadly not see an official release of O. however with the beautiful thriving community of XDA on top of the fact that it's a Nexus, it will most definitely see an unofficial release.

Many people do. If you looked at most of the devices from the mod team you will find many keep their devices for about 4 years or so.
Learned long ago there is no point in updating alot. The hardware changes are minor at best.

The last time I kept a phone for more than 3 years was the original Nexus. Nothing out there now peaks my interest. Now that I'm used to the large screen, I can't go back to a 5.5 or smaller phone. I may actually keep my 6 for another 18 months unless Google introduces a new Nexus device with a large screen.
Is it likely there will be a new 6" Nexus in the next several years? 5.5 to 5.7 seems to be the upper limit for the high end phablets.

The rate of hardware advancement is slowing down dramatically. There is really nothing that you gain by buying new hardware compared to something like a Nexus 6. A very small boost in speed, and 64bit that doesn't do much for a phone (basically, its benefit is limited to crypto).
So do tell me why anybody would want to spend $500-$1000 on new hardware when it doesn't actually do anything useful for them?

Just keep in mind that google didn't say that they will cut everybody off at those times, but rather that they only GUARANTEE updates until then. Seems to me that there remains a possibility of official full version updates for as long as providing them isn't overly burdensome.

Well, care about official or not works like this;
If you want to run code from a source that you trust, you will either run the official builds, or spin your own. No sane person will trust the binaries built by fly by night hacks from some random website (including something bigger like cyanogenmod, because the quality control on that is basically bullpoop).
So for trustworthy code, there are two sources. One of those two sources can be burdensome. Therefore YES, WE DO CARE if google continues with the builds.
Hi to all SM-G900F fans and for all developers!
I'd like to introduce this topic to discuss about the possibility of the Samsung Galaxy S5 SM-G900F to have the new Android 8. Knowing about some amazing improvements that were made to the new Android 8 that will arrive soon, I'd like to know the following:
[ALL FANS] - What do you think about our S5 SM-G900F having an Android 8 ROM? With a booting time cut in half, with app performance increased in double, with drivers available to update, etc.? If that will be possible to the developers apply to the S5 SM-G900F, it would be great or not?
[ALL DEVELOPERS] - What do you think about the idea of creating an Android 8 ROM for a great 2014 phone? It will be possible to do that with all improvements that were claimed for the new Android 8? It will worth that huge effort?
As you can see I love this phone, no doubt about that. But, my wish is to have my Samsung Galaxy S5 SM-G900F running Android 8 with all those features that were claimed to have in the new Android OS. If that can be possible, I think it would be amazing for this phone! Because I think the hardware is still good to support newer software and it would be very nice to see an excellent quality/price phone like this to match new ones.
I hope my wish can became true. . .please do not let this phone R.I.P!

Yeah, you're absolutely right and I apologize for my behavior. I was only excited about that I just decided to try to share my feelings and thoughts with the XDA Community. I love XDA Developers. It teached me so much about everything related to Android over the years. However, I must follow all the rules and have a good behavior so please feel free to remove/delete this thread.
Once again, I'm sorry for having opened this thread. Just a BIG "thank you" to all developers for the hard work they always do and for all members that share doubts and solutions for everything related to Android.

It's alright to discuss about such things, but never push devs beyond what they can do. You simply show disrespect and it's one of the main reasons why devs give up creating something new.
Regarding Android 8 (Android O), I don't think it's going to be an easy task to port it to our device. At first, on Nougat was hard enough to make everything working (camera being one of the main highlights, since N has a completely revamped camera interface under the hood, like different process handling and stuff). I can't imagine, what O actually brings to the table and in no way it's going be a walk in the park.
And neither battery life nor camera is going to be as good as stock. Blame Samsung and Touchwiz for their closed source nature.
Even if it happens, camera will still suck. Why flash something that makes your phone worst and unstable, just to say that you have the latest android version in "phone about"
I don't know why you are so hyped about it, it has really small changes since Lollipop...

Of course not. It's about to have all the NEW features in your OLD phone (if possible, of course). I think there are several phones (like the Samsung Galaxy S5) that have plenty potencial to run newer software. Besides that, one teacher I had, one day, he told in the classroom that there's no limits when programming, it only depends on our imagination to create solutions. I'm nobody to say that his words are correct or not, but I believe if there's will and hope that things are capable to be made.

I'd love to see Android 8 on my S5. It is true and it will be always true that the stock TW camera is the best one. It has slow-mo and 1080p60 video (I know that OnePlus camera has 720p90fps slow-mo, but that's not that great comapared to the stock.) But in my opinion, for some picture shooting, it is a great camera with the stock Lineage camera as well. (Maybe one day someone can find Samsung's driver).
Besides that, the S5 runs great with the latest 7.1.2 Android, and I believe that it will run as fast (if not better) with Android O.
Definetly hope for an upcoming information, devs: take your time, make a great rom.
I don't see anything wrong with this topic? The guy just asked if it's possible lol He didn't tell you "MAKE IT NOW!!". About stock android 8 - no. Stock android is boring, even Samsung's version of KitKat has more features than the newest stock android from Google. But some sort of port from, let's say, the Note 8 or the Galaxy S9 would be awesome in my opinion. There already are S8 ports for the KLTE which work with little bugs that will be fixed soon (SkiesROM) or ones that don't really matter that much (DreamUX ROM). Hardware is more than capable. iPhones have super low hardware and Apple updates them for 4-5 years ahead. This means that 'old' 2014 hardware like the S5's can be used perfectly fine even in 2020...with the right developers. BUT, nothing beats official Sammy firmware. Sure, you'll get the new features from android O(reo?) and the new Note8/S9 but bugs are inevitable whereas TouchWiz 6.0.1 is fine in every aspect. I'll stick to my S5 until 2019-2020 and then buy a new S10 or S11 (xd). I just hope that Samsung bring back the features from the S5 like IR blaster, fingerprint scanner on the front, hover view in the gallery and video apps, etc. FM Radio won't hurt too (still envy my S3 Mini for having it, 1%=3h radio) :|

Ideally those features should come with the Oreo update of Note 8. Can't see any other logical reason for delaying the update of their current flagship as most of these tweaks require dual camera which s8 or + dont have thus they just released the oreo without that. But, they cannot release the new features on Note 8 before they show it off in S9. Thus the hold up in the update. Releasing a Oreo update for Note 8 without those features and then again releasing one more later with the update is too much work thus they must have skipped the former.

After the s9 sales well yes the note 8 will get key features as for anytime soon no forget it
Hopefully we at least see Oreo soon. I'm still salty because Samsung just cut the Samsung Pay reward points in half....
We will see (I hope) many good things when Oreo hits the note 8, I can not say that features from s9+, but hey! They belong to a different series, I bought my note 8 for what it is and the features it offered from day one, so, anything else would be a very welcome bonus, that is why I do not complain or whine about oreo still not coming, I like my device as I bought it, that is why I chose it, that`s it.
i did saw the live launch yesterday and they displayed for a few seconds that the S8/S8+/Note 8 is AR capable
so lets see if Oreo update will allow us to have S9 AR capable camera features
Honestly I doubt it unless 3rd party ports them. They're running out of ideas for new upgrades it's obvious and to port new software features to older phones isn't the best marketing move. That's just my opinion.

Samsung messed up this time BIG time. We all paid very good money for the note 8 for a good phone - ok? Yes, that is true but to wait almost a full year for the Oreo update? Common SAMSUNG...
Now the S9 series will be on top of everything and in a few months the Note 9 will so our 1000 bucks Note 8 will be "old" , "sluggish" an so on... This is bul**** my friends.

your first mistake was expecting fast update from Sammy. they are known for their obscene late updates and if im not wrong, the current price of the Note 8 is already pretty low before S9 even hit.
i was even thinking of rooting but thx to Substratum especially the font addons. again, i maybe wrong, cause i do shot video at 60fps, rooting may very well kill that feature. yeah, there is rooted stock rom but i root for flashing purer rom if theres such word and therein lies the problem, no more 60fps!
Anyone who expects S9 features to be present in the Note 8 rom must be smoking something illegal...
Where in the world is the economic sense to supply these features in their next phone if owners of older phones have it already?
Why would you update your hardware if you are already running most of the improvements?
We'll probably get a slightly beefed up version of Oreo that the S8 and S8+ got and won't see any of the S9 features until 6 months after the S9's and S9+'s relaese. There's no money in it for Samsung...
My view on major updates is mixed. Monthly security updates are in my view mandatory and Samsung continues to offer those down to the S6.
Major OS updates can yield mixed performance and stability results when applied to older hardware. Further, the advances from say Nougat to Oreo- range from significant (Treble (which the 8 series will not get with Android 8.0), better battery life, notifications, etc ) to cosmetic.
Samsung Experience new version tweaks seem even less important. I can live without new emojis for example.
I think the bottom line is that with Oreo and Project Treble, Samsung and others should be able to churn out faster and more reliable updates. The issue pre Oreo was more on Androids limitations and less on Samsung's intransigence. That said, the omission of Treble from the 8 series Oreo updates is troubling. Maybe this will come with 8.1.

Lol dude, chill.. nobody is expecting definitive answers. I meant do you think Samsung might include these features in future updates. I was hoping for a discussion on what is theoretically possible, now that a lot of S9 features have been leaked.

No Samsung won't be releasing any of the s9 features for note 8 as it would cripple the s9 sales and the note 9.
They only did that with the note 5 when note 7 was recalled as a apology of some sort.
The XDA devs on the other hand are know to to port stuff somewhere down the line but sadly we don't ha e that many devs for note 8 yet as we did for previous notes such as note 3 and 4.
Hopefully more devs will buy note 8 when note 9 is released when price falls.
Samsung might be testing Pie on some of its devices!

This would make the Note9 even more amazing if it got Android 9 this year...
I have it on my Pixel, it's absolutely amazing!
Not holding my breath...
I won't hold my breath. Samsung might muck it up bad.
Won't be early...just waiting as usual
I have it on my Pixel 2XL & while it's nice to have it & be as up to date as possible, it really is nothing special.
Let Samsung get it right & it'll come when it comes. Note 9 on Oreo is amazing as it is & it all works.
Well, I'm not hoping anything to be honest... Hahaha
Oreo one is already THAT good for me, and for my usage, is already pretty good..
The only thing I wanted is surprise for a Linux Dex getting implemented.. But, since Android is more and more complex, fingers crossed...
samsung are crafty really as they only give two version updates so our note 9 will drop off on android R instead of S which sucks seeing as android pie was out before the note 9 came out.

This has been the cycle for every single Note. It's not new. Don't they support two YEARS of updates? Not two updates?
last i heard is P will be out on the Note 9 before the end of the year, this is a very big test for project treble and im sure google is putting a little pressure on samsung and other oems to get this os update out in a timely manner.

Yeah but you still have stock android. Which lacks too many features i've come to enjoy on Samsung Experience. A lot of the features on P, Samsung had for years. I tried stock android, had me running back to Samsung. No thank you.
It would be great if N9 can dual boot: Samsung Experience + AOSP/PE Rom

Bruh this is the second time you've tried to give me a Samsung Fanboi lesson. I have my likes you have yours. Chill.... I like a more minimalistic experience without all the bloat that's all.

You may not realize this but a Samsung build of Android is a lot more gimped in the grand scheme of things.
Let's calm down all the fanboy logic please.

What does everyone think of petitioning Samsung to include the Note 9 in the android upgrade program, atleast till the hardware is compatible ?
I know it's a stretch and likely to give no result but no harm trying........
So they aren't planning on listing on the program too[emoji2357] they can be really Pathetic at times gosh. Why cut it off

While it sucks that the Note10 Lite will get Android 11, 12 and 13 when it has the exact same CPU and RAM variants as our Note9 I think it's safe to say that they won't include it in this program. I mean they explicitly said S10 onwards. And while that doesn't list specific devices it's obvious that the Note9 is not in that space I'm all about them supporting it and would sign a petition for it but pretty sure it won't change the facts.
PS: We should be happy though, Note9 came withAndroid 8.1, got Android 9, Android 10 - 3 times! - OneUI 2.0, OneUI 2.1 and soon OneUI 2.5. Don't know about others but for me those OneUI updates are almost like a new OS version as they all bring nice new features to the phone.

Actually, by your math, came with 8.1. Was upgraded to 9 and 10. That's 2 upgrades...
It should have been released with 9 but Samsung has a BAD habit of releasing with last years version of Android then updating within a month or two to use up one of the firmware version updates... This "3 major updates" actually brings it into line with the 2 major update policy they currently have...
And yes, every Note 9 user could sign the petition but you'd have a better chance of jumping off a cliff and sprouting wings before they'll update our phones, with Android 11...

It's not all bad news though Since the Note10 Lite has the same hardware we'll get ports from its firmware for whoever wants it.
