I have in the past used Note 1 then upgraded to Galazy S4 and now Note 9. When I tried all these devices in store before buying. Their screens appeared to be excellent. But once I bought them and used them for a few days I slowly started to see issues with screens. The note 1 I had slowly developed this redness on right edge of the phone over time visible only on grey background under low brightness. I got it replaced 3 times but then gave up. After that when I switched to S4 it had this reddish top and greenish bottom visible only on low brightness and white or light grey background. I got it replaced once and again got a similar screen with the same issue plus overall slightly yellowish tint on the whole screen. So once again I gave up and was using the same device from past 5.8 years. Now when I tried the Note 9 in stores i just loved the screen and ordered it. Now after using it for a few days I find on light backgrounds that the screen is slightly brighter at the bottom than the top. In fact it's like it's whiter at the bottom than at the top. I was thinking are there amoled screens which have uniform whiteness/brightness across the screen. In all other aspects the screen is perfect to me but this issue once I know it's there is somewhat annoying to me. How is your screen ?

dont think they had oled on the note 1 or s4 yet. but i can assure you that since Samsung made OLED, these screens are the best out there. and to tell you the truth, any 2018 screen would trump what you may have experienced in the past.

The note 1 and s4 both had super amoled screens. The screen on note 9 is certainly much better but not perfect as I have mentioned in my first post.

what models re you buying? us or international?
also you might want to try and condition your screen.
oled tools is but one example of apps that display static images at full brightness.

Most people wouldn't notice.
I've had a SGSII, a Note 4 and I'm currently using a Note 8. All of SAMOLED displays have been really good with no issue as you have described.

You do know that Sony is failing in the smartphone department right? They currently in the same situation as LG. Unfortunately, the screen won't save their smartphone division.
Edit: Playstation is where Sony gets their money these days. Sad to see.

Displaymate rated the Note 9 as having the best display ever on a mobile phone. Just as they did for the S9, and Note 9 before that. Pretty much every new top of the line Samsung device trumps the best there was before it.... and the best there was has pretty much always been on a Samsung device. Sammy makes the best displays.
In any case, you can find other very good displays on other phones that look pretty much as good, but when a place like Displaymate puts a "best ever" sticker on a device's display, it is for a reason. Note 9 display is not much different than the Note 8 display for instance, but it is enough of an improvement to warrant the top billing from Displaymate.

Note 9 earpiece smudges won't go away
Hey I guys I bought the note9 from 6 days ago. One day I was just rubbing the top bezel ( the space that has selfie camera, iris, led, ect) suddenly I saw 2 smudges, one above the earipeice, one under. I kept rubbing it and it doesn't go away. I believe that maybe when I was rubbing my hands were sweating so water entered beneath the glass. Here's a picture I posted here so maybe you'll get what I mean. If anyone has this issues or fixed please share it here. If the attachment is not working please say.

Take it back & exchange for a new one.
Any attempts to fix it on your own will likely make it worse.
Don't waste a minute waiting for home remedies here, utilize the return/exchange policy for a free replacement before that period expires.

All note 9 owners can you please open any site with white background in google chrome and when the phone is held in hand in portrait mode do you see even slight difference between the white levels at the top and bottom of the screen. Please reply. Its very slight but its there.

Just looked at a note 9 i have and the note 8 and using chrome on a white (blank) home screen i dont see any color shift at the top or bottom or anywhere on the screen.

I opened Samsung browser with no tabs open white screen. Slightly yellow or warm color. Looks pretty even but if I were to be extremely critical top side is a more darker maybe.
The white is definitely not like the note 8 white . Using amoled photo with slight blue light setting.

My Note 9 has an even white color across the whole screen. It also has a bit truer whites than my Note 8. Part of that may be that my Note 8 is now a year old, but overall I believe Samsung tuned the contrast down a bit on the Note 9 from the Note 8. Just to be clear, I am using the exact same display settings on both phones.... so I am getting an accurate comparison of the Note 9 vs Note 8. There is very little difference, you'd have to literally be looking at them side by side to notice the slight difference.

looks as if you have a glass or plastic film. the cutout of the speaker is to high for it being the original glass
Compare home screen icons on the note 8 and note 9. Let me know what difference you see. I see the note 9 not being as sharp. But then on the same token , the note 9 like I said earlier is more natural and appeasing to the eyes.

Exactly that is what I am trying to say. The screen is beautiful with the best whites I have seen on a amoled screen and its pretty even as well. But my eyes seem quite sensitive to screens and I also feel the top is somewhat darker.

I believe its too early to say anything about the screen burn. I have owned the phone since November, and my screen seams fine so far. If you are that worried about it, you can install launchers that hide the status bar, or allow transitions in the start pages.
Regarding the saturation, the S II is too saturated causing unreal colors. No idea if that changed with ICS though. You should head over to SII forums for that. The Note displays colors closer to what they really are. They still are a bit saturated though.
As far as amoled+ vs amoled HD is concerned, I would suggest the later. 1280x800 with 5.3 inch screen looks much better than 4.3 with 800x480. In the end, its your choice. Compare the 2 in hand and pick what fits your needs.
I've had mine since November also. I have a black wallpaper with white Android logo in center. Have noticed that the Android image will faintly show on dark app backgrounds, am a little concerned. It's very faint.

Trick for status bar burn in is to switch between 12 and 24 hour clocks every week. It shifts everything over slightly
Also depending on the launcher you use. You can hide the dock and status bar

The burn in problem is not specific to some AMOLED based models!
All AMOLED based phones will get the burn in problem sooner or later!
I just recently switched from a Black Note to a White one, the first had a bit more than four months use and I noticed that the screen, while not burned in, wasn't as bright as it used to be and I found myself increasing the brightness more and more month after month. Then when I switched to a White Note, wow, I didn't remembered how bright the screen was initially!
So yes, our beloved Notes suffer from that Burn-in problem just like any other AMOLED smartphone.
Also, take caution when using it outside, since our screens also degrade under extended periods of UV light exposure! No matter if the screen is on or off!
Another good reason to use a Super LCD based screen like the one on the One X.

Yes the note can suffer from pixel wear a.k.a. burn out.
To prevent this:
Use launchers that hide the notification bar on home screens.
Don't use apps that don't have the option to hide the notification bar.
Use full screen browsing with browsers such as Opera Mobile
And don't leave static images on the phone for extended periods of time.
And for the love of god don't use a cradle or docking station because that will destroy your screen! Think about it? Leaving your phone on all day at work in its docking station showing the time and weather. What do you think is going to happen to that screen?
No burn in here at all, heavy user since Note launch.
I have always used Opera though which allows full screen mode so my status bar is always obscured during web browsing and games.
Thank god I didnt buy one of those yet. I mean who releases a phone that has these problems? The AT&T store is a good example of burn-in. You see the low brightness, lines and butned in launcher icons. Thats what has held me back so far.

Not trolling, that is what i saw when messing with any amoled screen device in the att store. When browsing or navigating through screens i would see launcher icons. These were display devices though. I did want a Note but this is what scared me from it. The SGS2 also exhibited this behavior. So now to see if the SGS3 does the same thing, i'm due for an upgrade and want to try a different device other than the iPhone (pending what the iPhone 5 brings). I also noticed lines(greenish hues) when viewing white webpages, but this was strictly on the Note, not the SGS2 or Skyrocket variant.
So I do believe this is strictly related to the amoled displays because reading other topics i see this being issue being brought up often(Q&A section of this sub forum has screen issues brought up often). I'm just concerned because I did want a Note, waiting for ICS and keep reading about it(that is why I am here). My last visit to the AT&T store made me search for those issues. If I am going to buy something I want it to work for 2 years without fail.

Yes the Note experiences burn in ESPECIALLY with STATIC images. The android status bar is a static image so it will wear out all the amoled LED's near the top of the screen especiall the blue LED's.
If you set your lock screen time out to like 1 minute then after a few months you will begin to see the amoled pixel wear. To see this, view your screen on an all Blue, Gray or Green background.
As vibrant and beautiful as Amoled is I would prefer a super LCD screen on my Note.

Ive had mine since december and use my phone loads and i had a massive burn in from status bar, so sent it off the samsung for a new screen, they repleced fine nd had it back in a week. Screen is sweet now, i now use fullscreen browsing on my phone because thats when i mostly uae my note, hopeully i houldnt suffer as bad now.
That is bad. I have to cancel may NOTE plan and go for the less desirable optimus VU. My phone activity requires to much static moments like thinking long at a chessboard.
I have 3 notes 2 black and 1 white.. Entire family uses note.. Both the blacks have burn in on top.. Visible in all blue or grey background.. Black's have been used for 8-9months while white is just 5months old..

SGS2 has an RGB layout which will burn in faster.
The blue pixels in AMOLED displays suffer the worst from degradation.
As a pentile layout uses a shared green pixel for the red and the blue, the red and blue pixels are smaller.
Therefore degradation is less noticeable. But it will happen eventually.
In fact one of the reasons Samsung has switched to a pentile layout for the Note and SGS3 is because of the longevity of their panels.
I'm very curious about the Note 2 screen as I understand it's RGB.
My dad has a SGS2 and the burn-in was absolutely horrible.
He wen't to a service center and screen burn-in was covered by Samsung's two year warranty.
No problems there.

The Galaxy S was pentile and it was notorious for burn out. I dont think rgb is any better or worse than pentile when it comes to amoled wear.
So I put in an RMA for my nexus 4 since my earpiece was not working, i got in on the first day of sale, and other then having to make calls through speakerphone, ive been extremely happy with the phone.
so i put in my RMA, and just received the unit 2 days ago. and i have some concerns.....
for starters, the screen on the replacement unit seems to have something wrong with it, cant quite figure out what it is, its not the common yellow spotting issue, its more of a washed out, lack of brightness issue. its not as bright as my original, and the whites seem dull and off-white, and the greys( particularly the settings menu) seem to have a yellow/greenish tint. I tried the color calibration apps (both the nexus 4 display app and the faux app) nothing seemed to work.i have taken pictures to show the differences.
another issue is with the back glass. If you see the pictures around the camera opening, my original has a noticeably bigger opening then my replacement, god knows why, but this ties in with the tittle of this thread and my concern, could this back glass have been broken and replaced by LG and passed off as a new in box unit?
the last piece of this puzzle is with the packaging itself, the box was new, had original black tape security tabs identical to my original nexus, also the screen protectors were in place as well, also identical to my original nexus. but what was definitely not present was the thin tiny strips of vinyl covering the chrome bezel, there was 4 in total on my original, this RMA unit had none, what gives?
so there is it, sorry for the long rant, just wanted to see what everyone thinks about this.
pics showing the difference in screen quality, original unit on right, replacement on left, also my original unit has the larger camera opening, let me know what you think.
Yellowing is normal with IPS Panels, it's the glue drying, give it a few days and it will be gone.
The camera lens has been discussed in other threads. It's apparently a hardware revision and makes no difference with the camera quality

There was none, the device was bare.
You seem to have gotten a rev 11. Give the RMA a week and then compare the screens. The yellow will be gone by then. As long as the yellow is uniform you should be good. Be grateful you didn't order an RMA this late and got an original rev 10. I think the 11s have better battery life and less light bleed. The rev 10 I received is awful... Came gritty and full of dust. Also had a nick in the glass underneath the factory screen cover, a black unfinished dot on the chrome, and a piece of debris under the glass. The yellow on my screen is only on the lower half of the screen. This is my 4th nexus. I have no. 5 on the way. Hope I get a good one the next time around.

well, now that you mention it, that was one of the things i did notice, was less light bleed, total darkness with black background, my original unit has 2 spots on the top with very small light bleed, the new RMA unit has a tiny hint of light bleed in the same spot.
so im suddenly feeling alot better about my replacement unit thanks to you guys, my biggest concern was the missing vinyl pieces over the chrome bezel, glad to hear its normal.
i still have 18 days to send out my original unit, ill keep using it daily with full brightness and compare after a week.
Also, where was the camera opening change discussed?

I would like to know this too.
just confirmed, you can check your "rev" model by booting into fastboot, (hold vol up and vol down + power)
so my original is a rev-10 manufactured in 10/20, my new RMA unit is a Rev-11 manufactured 12/10, i hope the screen improves

5th phone? I guess that means they'll probably give me a replacement too I thought after the 3rd unit they wouldn't do anything I'll call for a RMA tmrw my phone has been constantly overheating it even started to heat up when it was in my pocket on sleep

Mines a rev 10 and it's great, no issues, no light bleed, no yellow screen, none of that stuff.
The yellowing is not glue and it will no go away, my rma has a yellow tint and after weeks of use it is still there, my RMA also had the smaller camera hole aswell, waiting on my third nexus.
no vinyl on my bezel at all. Mine was not RMA.
Yeah, my N4 did not have any plastic on the bezel when it arrived BNIB. My RMA should come this week or the next (Bluetooth does not work on current device on Stock firmware and custom as well) and I will compare the two to see if there are any differences.

I received my RMA on November 29th. I have perfect Nexus except for some light bleed at the top. That's not a big deal especially since it's an IPS display. No yellowing, whites are perfect, no overheating, and I have a "faster" CPU.

They've probably increased the gap around the lens so if the back glass cracks it cannot crack quite as close due to a bigger gap?

This sucks to hear..... So the phone itself is not bad, the screen seems great and bright, but when I put it next to my original nexus its amazingly noticeable, and that's what kills me!!! Knowing that I do t have the best screen experience possible, ugghhhh
I called in the issue and might pursue another RMA, but I think I'm gonna wait a while, perhaps "rev-12" or whatever comes next will be better, but the screen is killing me right now!!!
Mine kind of yellow. But I don't care really. I change my phone every year or so. So it's not really big deal. The screen very crisp colors are very nice.
I regards to the yellow tint... Does LG out source their LCDs? Reason I ask is because the comparison shots just look like different screen temps. When I was buying iPhones, this was a common issue because apple used displays from both Samsung and LG. I had bought two phones on the same day for my wife and I, both the same model, and my phone had a very blue (cool temp) hue as compared to my wife's, which was much more yellow (warm temp). Just a thought.

I own a Galaxy S2, Note N7000, a Tab S and a newer SM-N910C Note 4. I counted these devices to point I'm very familiar with various AMOLED displays. In fact, I'm so charmed by this technology that I won't ever buy a phone or tablet with LCD again. The problem is, on Note 4 RED is not as RED as in previous devices. I put the same test image on all devices, and all S2, Note 1 and Tab S displays a very pure red, the Note4 displays a kind of red- pink. I really can't say the view quality is poor, white is really white on its screen, but the wavelength of the red color is clearly different. All in this device gives me a "premium feel", but I can't explain why red looks so different. Did they used cheaper materials? I can't imagine it's only to my phone, screen uniformity is good and all screeen has the same color.
I pictured all phones (Note 4 on the left, Note 1 and S2 on the right) with Standard screen mode, brightness maximum.
I noticed this possible issue few days ago when I found about the *#0*# test mode for samsung and I wanted to try. At the very first RED test I noticed that isn't quite red.
Please note that colors aren't distorted because of different screen brightness, the hue is quite the same for the eye, too!

The thing is the Note 4 screen is way way much brighter than the S2 and is known that the previous Galaxy flagships had very unrealistic and saturated colors. The Note 4 has by far the best screen ever and color reproduction is much closer to reality compared to the older generations of S/Note line.
Cheaper display? No chance! The display on Note 4 is top quality/technology and you cannot compare it to the S2.
EDIT: Check your Display settings, you might use different settings and that might be the cause of the pink'ish red.

This phenomena happens the same with screen on basic or photo. The red hue is the same on my S2, note1 AND Tab S - which it is said it has the most calibrated screen colors. Only on Note 4 the hue is slight pinky. Not much, but uniform. Can I have a unit that was not properly checked?

For me, you have a faulty unit. Please go to settings and change the screen mode under "screen" to have the same in every device, if it still looks bad, take the photos and send it to the Warranty, they have to give you a brand new device. My N910C looks much better than my Old N7000's screen. Used an image with R:255 G: 0 B: 0 (Pure red) and doesnt looks "pink" as yours. Good luck and let us know if you will have a replacement or not. Can you please repeat the process ... Making zoom the image, then drag from one side to the other repeatedly, with low brightness (~ 10%) to see if the ghosting around the cat appear when in motion.

Yes. There's ghosting and it's a known issue since the Galaxy S4. This affects every Note 4 so don't worry, it's not only your phone.
Edit: actually it's not called ghosting. Its like blue shades it had a proper name, I will investigate a bit more

had the chance to see the Note 4 and the S6 side by side via skype right after the official presentation, looks pretty much the same (Talking about brightness and contrast). IDK about colors as the stream was a bit low quality, but between both I didn't saw too much difference. The screen seems to be the same as Note 4, and that's why Samsung didn't made publicity of the S6 screen and instead focused in other features.
Before starting to explain, I will do an analogy about the amoled screens: There were two "batchs"/generation of amoled screens, first one is the S/S2/S3/Note1/Note2 and the newer one started with the S4, and remained in the Note 3/4 and probably the S6.
Since the S4, samsung "remade" the Amoled screens from scratch, featuring better color reproduciton and whites (the older generation had a green tint all over the white colors).
The S4 screen was the poor amoled screen so far. Maybe because it was the first 1080p Screen by samsung, but it wasn't the best. The issue was called "Purple smearing" and happend even at full brightness. It was pretty noticeable when you move a grey object which had a black background behind, just like the separators between settings at the settings app. However, this issue was reduced in newer devices. The S4 Mini didn't had this issue since the screen quality was pretty much the same screen build as the Note 2, S2 or S3. In the Galaxy S5 and Note 4, the screen was much better built than the S4, however, the smearing effect still happens at low brightness. It's not a big deal, I can live with that. I just hope that I will not have screen burn-in problems like I had with the Note N7000.

My impression is S3 was the first using different driving methods and different materials. Different driving because you can see PWM dimming when low brightness and different materials because bluish reflections when display off.
Are you guys experiencing light bleed from the edges of your Note 8 screen. I just got my Tmobile Note 8 yesterday.

It isn't bad at all when the brightness is lowered, but looks absolutely disgusting when using the phone for GPS at night.
Last thing I want is for a $1500 phone to look cheap.
Apparently this is "natural" because of the glass and how it reflects light, BUT... all they had to do was wrap the black around it to block that reflective exit alone the edges.. But they didnt.
I may just take my note 8 back over this. I couldn't stand this on my note 7
OP, you should max the brightness, show a white image, and put a credit card on top of the screen and then take a picture.

Luckily my case covers it so I won't OCD over it, like the bubble I have in the bottom of my screen protector, going back to geek squad tomorrow. On my s7 edge I made them change it out 3 times. :angel:

You probably aren't noticing it because it takes a relatively bright image closer to the edge for it to appear.
View a white image with maxed brightness while covering the majority of the screen, and you will literally see a white ring around the edge of the phone.
Super damn annoying -_-

After reading this post, I immediately took it out of the case, cranked the brightness up, turned the lights off, opened a web page, seen it! Aghhhh! On mine, it seems worst on the right side. Put it back in the case, took a shot, and now trying to forget it was ever there or my eyes will look for it every time, because it IS ANNOYING now that I KNOW it's there!

If it makes you feel better, its only noticeable when the brightness is at a decent level. Plus using a case will get rid of it entirely.
I'll probably whip out the microscope and apply a fine line of black paint along the edge of the glass lol.
I wonder when they're going to get rid of light bleed. I've literally had it on every device with a screen that I've ever owned.
I thought that OLED devices weren't backlit. Blah blah blah individual pixels lit. Isn't that supposed to be a selling point of OLED screens? Where does the light bleed come from?

It happens because the glass is still thick enough to allow light to travel along the inside and exit throughout the edges.
This is such an easy fix too, which is why I don't understand why this hasn't been fixed. All they have to do is literally wrap the glass around the edges with the same material they're using the the top and sides anyway..

Ahh, ok. Makes sense. Thanks for the explanation. It's different than the standard LCD light bleed then.
Hopefully I won't notice it much while it's in a case.

A blast from the past. Identical thread in the Note 7 and nearly all other forums concerning the 'edge screen design'.
It is not technically "Light bleed" That term is reserved for a phenomena (problem-fault) often common with IPS panels.
What you are seeing is......how can one write.......light escaping NOT into the screen as light bleed but light escaping from the screen.....There is a gap between the body and where the display ends, this tiny tiny tiny space, in certain situations, can indeed shine light OUT but not into the screen and there is a difference but both can be annoying IF we become OCD about it. I guess this situation is part of the edge experience? As suggested by peers, a case will stop such micro reflections or light escaping.

I've never experienced it with the Note 7 or currently with the Galaxy S8 plus. Is this enough to get a replacement?
Wow, this thread is like dejavu, I had to really look for it with max brightness in a dark room to find it on both my note 7's. I didn't think it was a big deal but some did. If I get the note 8 I will look for it.

It sounds like you might have to go through more than one replacement to get one that doesn't do it.
Just for fun, I always follow the release of the new iPhone on Macrumors each year, and there's always a huge light bleed thread. I know (now) that this is something completely different than what happens with these phones.. People over there go through numerous replacements to try and get a perfect screen. Many never get one.
I will have my phone in a case from day one, so I guess that I won't see this.

I'm not seeing any either even with the brightness turned all the way up and various bright pictures. There's a slight change in brightness but that's to be expected with the curve but nothing like the pictures.

at least one guy on another forum has reported his light bleed and is getting a replacement in exchange.
So maybe some were built with more of a "gap" there than others.
The way my luck with electronic devices works, I'll definitely have it. Glad that it won't be noticeable when it's in a case. I won't even look for it, because then I'll know it's there for sure and it will bug me.
Just got a note 8 today, it has panel bleed on the top left and bottom right, as well as a little bit above the front camera. It's very annoying. A case covers it up, but I really dislike cases, especially on a phone this gorgeous. But apparently, this is a common problem. Is there a chance if I exchange it I can get one without the bleed?

I think its not actually bleeding. It's light refracted through the glass all the way to the edge of it and then projected out of the glass's edge to the frame of the phone where it becomes visible (kinda like optical fiber does).
To check, try removing any bright visual elements (white text, icons, parts of the wallpaper alligned to the spot where you see the bleed. On top it's quite hard as you have notifications and status icons, but elsewhere should not be an issue.
At least that's what I saw on my black N8 but now my UAG case covers the edge (I was usigh dark wallpaper with white icons).

I just received my note 8 F 128 GB midnight black, and, it is flawless, after reading posts for more than 2 months I was paranoid about all the issues that some people reported, but I found zero problems, no lag, no freezing, no apps crashing, no excessive batt drain, no heating, no stutters, no screen tint, no light bleed, no screen/cristal smears, no missalignments, no crashing, etc

Mine is perfect. No bleeding from anywhere. Nice and quick and no overheating issues to report at all.
I went to exchange mine after reading all these responses, and ended up getting one with worse bleed

Zero problems with mine. I also own the iPhone 8 plus and in EVERY way possible I prefer the Note 8 week days and twice on Sundays. I think its the second mobile I have owned since 1989 that I am totally happy with. What else compares?

You actually took what you read here to heart to the point you avoided purchasing the Note 8 for months? You cant be serious?
I find forums a mixed blessing. If you read about any purchase on a forum it will contain mainly moans and groans, its human nature. If I took seriously all I read on the forums I belong to I would own very little indeed.

Anyway, this one actually isn't as bad. I thought it was because all 4 corners had it, but its much less bright at night I couldn't notice it.
