[experience] battery backup on stock Note 8 - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

Hi, i just bought a Note 8, i knew about the battery capacity but bought it anyways because of the awesome deal i was getting.
I spent a day reading blogs, forums, watching videos about note 8 tuning for best battery.
Im writing this after 3 days of testing and still a lot of tuning is left.
I disabled some of the features that i did not felt useful for now.
Any advice would be highly appreciated.

Hello everyone! I'm thinking of getting rid of my Note 4 and getting either a Xperia Z3 or a Nexus 6. Don't get me wrong, the Note 4 is a great device, but for the money, the amount of lag and terrible low-light and indoor pictures and pretty bad battery life is just too much for me.
The most important things for me are:
Battery life
Performance (multitasking)
Camera
All the blogs said the Note 4 was the device for me, but over the last 3 roms I haven't been able to fix ANY of these issues.
How's the Nexus 6? Are you guys generally speaking happy with it? Has anyone played with the Note 4 and could maybe shine some light on their opinion and experiences? Thanks!
UPDATE:
I've pulled the trigger, photography examples are here. Quite surprising if you ask me:

I've had the note 4. Lived the screen and the software actually wasn't half bad but there was lag, especially in the multitasking section. Also battery life was pretty bad and the phone heated up substantially even with little usage and of course saying that it's not on latest android software (which isn't a big thing for most). Just got the nexus 6 a few days and was completely blown away by how solid it is. Speakers are much louder than the HTC one m8 in certain situations (Spotify streaming seems to be on par) but in the vine app the videos are super loud and clear. Being on latest software is great and the screen itself being a 6 inch 2k display is very useful and not over kill at all although I do with the screen was more on the cooler side. Last but not least the development community of course is outstanding in the nexus community so overall the nexus is a solid choice. I've also had the z2 which is the same as the z3 is great but if your a modder/developer than you'll stay away as there isn't much. Only thing going for the z3 is the screen and battery life. I consistently got over 5 to 6 hours of screen on time on the z2 stock which I miss but not enough to go back lol

If you don't mind me asking, how is the camera and battery life on the nexus 6? I have read multiple sites and videos. They're all over the place. Some say the camera is awesome while others no. Other sites say that the battery life is good. Others say it's terrible... How does it compare with the note 4 and z2? I'm more intrigued by the nexus to be honest. Haha.

Batterylife is about 4-5 hours screenontime depending on usage off course. And for me the camera is quite good (not Galaxy S6 good) especialy with sufficient light, pics are crisp and detailled and colors are quite accurate. I`ve had all the Notes too but the N6 will grow on you i`am sure. And it has very good speakers btw.
Camera is great, but I'm not a "picture taker". Love the app, A Better Camera. Takes full advantage of all 13mp. Battery life varies heavily on kernel and the settings you chose. I can go a couple days. I don't really worry about battery life though. Ex. I had 12% and ran a short errund, 20 min at most. When I got back battery was 93%. Hail to the turbo charge...

Lol well I never take pictures. I did however take a few shots when I got it. The pictures seem good but then again I'm no professional. The battery life is OK to say the least when I first got it but it settled down after a few days. I'm now on chroma ROM stock nothing changed but the rom itself and I just pushed over 5 hours SOT. On bone stock before I rooted I believe I was getting a little over 3 hours with heavy gmail refreshing/internet browsing(chrome)/xda /YouTube watching and mostly all on T-Mobile LTE with db of around -109 to -112 at the place I work so id say it's pretty good honestly. If you root and ROM like most people do then you'll exceed those stock limitations for sure as evidence of me.

I don't like to mod or root my devices. So it would have to be stock everything. Camera performance is important to me, as is the ability to spend the day being able to take pictures. I could kill my phone with an afternoon of capturing some snapshots. Haha.
Knowing that I wouldn't root my device, would you still recommend it? ^_^ thanks.

Yeah definitely. The phone itself is a beast. Love the form factor, the screen, the speakers, stock software. The camera itself is fast and very simplistic, although it could use more manual camera options like the s6, but I'm sure you can download a camera off the play store with such options and of course you can record video in 4k so overall its not a bad contender what so ever.

Just got my N6 Wednesday. Completely stock I'm getting 6-7 hrs sot. Web browsing, YouTube etc. Camera is OK but it's not something that is important to me. I don't take many pictures. Quick charge works well. I came from a note 3. It was a good phone but I like this phone better. Better battery life than I ever got with the N3.
Stock... You've got a great camera. Again battery life is good, its a rather hefty one, but depends on you. How you use it, WiFi vs data, downloads, streaming etc. Basically battery life is in your control.

I understand that. That's why I'm so ticked about note 4... My usage is minimal. I am on Wi-Fi 90% of the time. My phone has been off the charger for an hour and this is the first time I've picked it up in an hour and it's already down 4%. Samsung did something horribly wrong.
I also have an awesome Nokia dt-903 wireless charger which I miss using since I switched my Nokia 1520. Haha. So as long as battery is good enough to last a day with normal usage, like taking some pictures, browsing the web for 20 minutes a day, and answering whatsapp and line messages throughout the day, then I'm happy. I`am sure the N6 will not be a letdown i`am sure, i would advice to buy the 64GB version (if available) as there is no sdcard tray to expand memory. As for the size you`re hands and brain will be used to it within 2 days and after that most other phones will look tiny

Haha. No doubt. I have the note 4 now. Before I had the Nokia 1520, another 6 inch device. But that one wouldn't allow me to sit down with the phone in my pocket. Haha. And I was counting on getting the 64gb model. ?

For sure. Unfortunately Verizon only had 32gb. That being said I have had phone a while and have multirom with 2 extras. Still over 17gb left. If you need it, get it!

$50 price difference is nothing. I remember "needing" 64 on iPhone 5S and paid, what 200 more. Foolish

Note looks like a great phone. If I had TMO or Sprint it would of been a tough call. Do they still have external SD?

I did this switch and haven't looked back since dropping my note 4 for the nexus 6.
I've had the Note 4 , 2 of them between me and my GF, and have been using the Nexus 6 for about 3 weeks now..
My Note 4 experience has been nothing like the OP. I got great battery ( mostly on LTE all day ...RF around -90 to -105db ...SOT almost 7 hrs), neither of the two Notes heated up to an uncomfortable level, the camera on both N4s has been stellar and way better than the Nexus 6 ! The Note 4 had a bit of lag but that was resolved ( at least for me ) when animations were toned down to 0.5x under Developer Options.
If camera, especially in low light situations, and battery are your priorities, stay away from the Nexus 6 ! I love the Nexus 6 but not for its camera or battery.
If it wasn't my impatience for the latest FW w/o rooting, I would have def. kept the Note 4 ! I wish there was a GPE version of the N4!!
I have no experience with the Z3, so can't comment on that device.

Samsung is a good phone. TMO and Sprint service is pathetic. At least here. So having Verizon I went with S5 after years of apple. Glad I did. And thanks to whomever, I was able to get a developer ed. I do miss sdcard a little, but removable battery was NICE. Hardly ever had to charge. Just swap to a fresh bat. I think Sammy is going away from those perks now so now it would be an easy choice....
Yeah, that's what I keep hearing. I guess I'll stick with my Note 4 a little while longer to see what happens with Samsung and their ROMS.
I went to a shop yesterday and did a camera test, and wow... I mean, the detail on the Nexus 6 is fine... But ... What a difference in camera quality...

Why should i buy Nexus 6?

Dear Folks,
I am about to buy and phone and i am reading and reading reviews about Nexus 6 vs Note 4, i don't know what to buy because after reading all that my mind is not working well, could you please help me to choose what phone should i have?
P.S i heard battery life on Nexus 6 is not good, is it true? :fingers-crossed:
Battery life is great on the Nexus 6 especially on Marshmallow. Under 30% a day with full time data and wifi and moderate use. I only use Battery Saving location, it"s accurate enough unless you're navigating your car.
As for the question itself, I too was choosing between these two, but I was searching for a device to develop on rather than just use it, so it clearly made the decision easy. First in Europe the official unlocked device is the Exynos one, I didn't want a locked device, it's a nuisance and since I was about to trip Knox the first day, it's a phone you can't sell later.
So the Note 4 has a better camera, it's not as huge (I had a Note 3 before), and the S-Pen that I never really used, but other people love it.
Also before I decided to buy a new phone for development, I was already using cm12.1 on my Note 3, and was looking for something even more stock than cyanogenmod. So there was not an option for me to go Touchwiz again.
So if you make up your mind what you are wanting this phone for, then I hope I helped to choose.
Dear @istperson all i am concerned about is little bit good battery life which help me to spend full day with wifi and data usage, i am not a developer, i also don't like S-Pen at all, i used S5 and touchwiz was lagging all the times, CM themer is available for Nexus 6 right? i think i will go with Nexus 6 its beautiful phone with large screen but i still find Note 4 screen more better than Nexus 6, what do you think?
Battery life for me is great 40% at least at the end of the day. Speakers are stellar as is the screen, camera is good can't complain.
I just bought an N6 about 2 months ago, and I have loved every second of it. I came from a Samsung Galaxy S3, so I would definitely not recommend buying a note 4. I am amazed that I was able to handle a GS3 for that long given how locked-down the software was. It took me no time to unlock, flash TWRP, root, and get a custom ROM running on my Nexus, whereas I was never able to do more than Xposed + root on my old phone. The software is amazing (and can be whatever you want it to be), the camera is nice (except for some strange autofocus bugs), and everything works like a charm.
As far as battery, I usually got 3 hrs SOT over about 18hrs (wifi, 4g, location, and always-on voice all turned on) running stock. With my current setup with Chroma ROM and kernel, I got 4hrs SOT over 18hrs yesterday even with a strange bug that caused mobile radio to suck up a third of my battery. Plus with Doze, standby time is unbeatable.
Hands down, go with a Nexus. I'm never going back.
I bought my nexus 6 a month ago and it is amazing! My battery life on stock was around 5 - 5.5 SOT, but now, after unlocking and rooting, with custom kernel and doze I get around 6-7 SOT!! Keep in mind that I don't use location, brightness is often on low levels, data is on 3G, but I am web surfing a lot, watching youtube, on tapatalk and whats app. Also nexus 6 will be among firsts to receive latest updates, patches and bug fixes straight from google. The speakers are really loud and great, and you get used to phone's size very fast. Camera is ok, nothing special, works just fine with third party apps...
Nexus screen is gorgeous (same resolution as Note 4 at Quad HD) but not as bright, most likely. Nexus will have no lag, and the battery should be no problem getting through a day

Am I late to the party SM-T713/SM-T813?

Hi!
My Nexus 9 tablet is driving me crazy since 1st day on. I'm searching for a tablet with good ROM support and find this Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 - in variant SM-T713/SM-T813 - it's supported by lineage.
My question is to he owners of this tablet and lineage on it:
Is it worth to buy it? How is the performance with normal usage (multitasking)? Stability?

I also came from the Nexus 9 and feel your frustration. That thing is ready for the skip.
I was also thinking about Lineage on my T715 when I first bought it as I'd heard all the bad stories about Touchwiz. To my pleasant surprise, I've found Touchwiz to be so good, I've not even thought about rooting/lineage. The performance of this tablet has been rock solid since day 1, but could never be described as fast. Thankfully, it does everything at the same speed. No problems with refreshing Chrome tabs or launcher redraws like on the Nexus 9.
If you do take the plunge, just have in mind that this is getting long in the tooth so don't pay too much for it. You can also swap the order of the capacitive buttons using an app called, "All in one gestures," from the play store.
Let us know how you get on.

In my opinion it is an excellent tablet both with performance and stability. I have been running Omni Rom 8.1.0 for several months and I couldn't be happier with it. Even while I was on stock I had no issues with it. I picked my T813 up about 18 months ago on eBay for way below the going price. The price for a "New (other)" from the same dealer I bought mine is currently $260. He provides a really good 1 year warranty and has a very fair return policy. The going price for a Tab S3 is $390 which I think is way overpriced for it.
Just my opinion and you know what they say about those.

Thank you.
I've got one new for 230 Euro in ebay.
2 things are terrible with this tablet and lineage
1. Can't charge over night the tablet to 100% - slow charging
2. Something eats battery in flight mode and display is off. - 25% in 4 hours. Can't find the reason for this
Everything else is top, but these 2 points are the killer

1. I noticed the same thing on my charger, however when I plugged the tablet into my phone charger it charged up much faster and had no problem reaching 100% overnight.
2, I don't have a clue about that. It must be specific to your tablet. I have been running for 3 days and 6 hours and still have 37%. That is with moderate usage playing Hay Day and Word Crumble some as well as some reading.
I've flashed omni and there is the same. Over night from 80% to 7% without display on, without using any app. That's apolutly a no go.
Now back to crap - Nexus 9
Sadly google stopped supporting tablets.
Samsung is bad because bad software support (look S8/S9 and oreo updates). With my S6 Edge I had also problems that I decided no Samsung anymore. I did it again and now the Tab S2 is going the same way back to eBay, if I get it charged to 100% in 2 days... .
Totally disappointed
I think that you had bad luck.
I've t719,LTE version,and the battery life it's very good.Usually,the LTE version it's more intense battery killer,but I managed to squeeze two days without charging,without games,only browsing,music,email.
Something it's wrong, try to buy from another source.

With Stock battery seems to be ok. But lineage and other 8.1 is very bad. And I bought this tablet because of these custom ROMs. Samsung is not supporting this tablet for 8.0/8.1 so I thought it will be nice with 8.1, I thought.... It will.....
Now I understand.
If so,you don't have many choices with good tablets with custom roms support.
At 8" screen, almost no choices, because Mediapad M3 and M5 from Huawei are not so popular.
Cheers
Yeah.... And Huawei closed his bootloader, so no chance for any custom ROM.
And how I've read the news, Google cancel his support to their tabs. Let's see what the future brings
A little bit off-topic,but I think that not the bootloader it's the problem of the Huawei mediapads, but the proprietary SOC,Kirin.
Even with bootloader unlocked, the third party development for Kirin it's almost inexistant.
Cheers

Torn between mi8 and pocophone f1. Could use some help from you guys.

Hey guys, I owned the pocophone f1 and liked it a lot but since it had a severe touch input issue I had to refund it and stick with my RN3.
The past couple of weeks fixes started to emerge for the touchscreen with lots of positive feedback about them which made pocophone f1 a viable choice again.
But in the meantime, I was looking at the mi8.
Although it's very compelling I have some questions in my mind before I end up getting it or not.
Your answers will help determine which phone I pick in the end.
1) Is the battery of the mi8 enough for day to day usage?
Using my device mainly for browsing and chatting.
2) Is it safe unlocking the bootloader and flashing let's say HavocOS?
I read it had rollback protection and you could screw up your phone, can this happen easily?
3) Is the development good enough? I saw LOS16 is not official which is never a good sign, same for twrp, two kernels available, and 5-6 roms.
The RN3 that I use is from 2016 and has 5 kernels, well over 10 roms, overall good development strength.
Do you think the mi8's development strength will increase over time?
4) Does the stereo speaker mod work on custom roms or in miui only? I really won't stay on miui long no matter what device I have.
If it doesn't work is the single bottom firing speaker loud? Does it have good quality?
5) Is 64gb of storage limiting? The lack of micro sd may force me to get the 128gb version. What about the lack of headphone jack, does that annoy you?
6) Does the device thermal throttle to the point that annoys you?
Is there any mod for that?
Feel free to answer anything you want, and add anything I missed if you see something important not mentioned.
Thanks to anyone involved in this.
I will reply to what I know I can answer to : battery life is absolutely superb and pretty much unbelievable, anywhere from 7 to 9 hours with extra high usage (8 hours screen on time with plenty of browsing, YouTube, messenger, and one of the most battery consuming games imo, fate grand order and on mobile data enabled 100%).
It's easily a one and a half to two days phone for average to high usage and for high usage it's around one day to one day and a quarter / half.
The single speaker is pretty loud and very clear, I enjoy how it sounds.
For me at least I'd say the 128 is the best buy since that's what I got and I couldn't see myself surviving with less but then again I'm a hoarder : I keep all the photos, videos, games, apps and most of the games I have are pretty big too.
And the screen is incredibly gorgeous and a joy to use too

Thanks for your contribution.
1) Battery life is good enough for a full day without worrying how much you use the phone
2)You'll always have to pay attention, no matter the device you buy. Read carefully and you'll be fine
3)I tried 3 early roms, now I'm back on Miui. They were overall pretty good, ready to be used on daily basis despite being published days before. I would say that you'll have good alternatives to Miui.
4)Don't know, I'm satisfied with the speaker, but I hardly use it to listen music. It's enough for me to listen audiobooks when I'm under the shower tough, and it's way better than my 24 inch philips monitor speakers. Btw the bluetooth is dope and super stable, I can go around the house with my bluetooth earphones while the phone is charging in my room. I think it's relevant if you're interested in music quality.
5)I went for 128GB. Better safe than sorry. It's not something you can fix later.
6)The phone is cold even when I play for a long time, and even if is charging. I may have read somewhere that after multiple benchmark tests one after the other the scores may go down, but it's an unrealistic scenario in normal usage.
Agorina, if you are a flashaholic, then the clear choice is the Pocophone. Having to wait 15-30 days to unlock the bootloader was a torture (Luckily i flashed Global Dev Rom in the meanwile and it was a night and day difference on many aspects).
Coming from an S8, i couldn't imagine my self going back to an IPS display.
Headphone jack is not an issue, the type c to 3.5mm is always attached on my earphones, so it doesn't really bother me.
I personally have the 64GB and untill now i am satisfied (totally depentant on your personal needs).
I haven't noticed a thermal throttle, but i only play light games (no PUBG).
i am currently on a custom ROM (Havoc OS), custom kernel (Sphinx btw made from a fellow Greek dev) and have dual speaker mod running.
Long story short : If you base your selection solely on the rom and general tweak availability then the Poco is a clear winner. Also, if you are tight on your budget, then the Poco is a good pick.
In any other case, i think Mi 8 is the winner.

Battery life is awful on 3 day old phone

Hello all,
As the title says, my battery life isn't great.
I've come to the S10 from an iPhone XR, and I love the phone, all apart from the battery.
In settings, it says analysing usage or something, could this be the reason my battery is terrible?
I did a live chat, the Samsung rep basically said uninstall chrome, which isn't possible, or buy a battery pack.
Can anyone help me out?
Thanks,
Dixi1801
