Hello everyone!
I just got the Note 9, coming from an S7. So far I'm in love with it! Definitely the best phone I've ever had, however, I did notice one issue I'm not particularly comfortable with. If I check my software information I see the security patch level is from July 1st 2018. If I tap on software update it says the latest updates are already installed.
I was quite hyped about the One UI update, but seeing this I started to wonder If I'll ever get it via OTA, and most importantly that I will probably be stuck forever on this July patch and not get any security updates
My question here is: If I download a firmware update fromSamMobile and decide to flash the one from Hong Kong or any other country, will it mess something up due to the fact it's not my country? I just want regular updates and seeing no update has arrived for this specific firmware of mine since July makes me think I will NEVER get anything and that honestly sucks.
Any help would be extremely appreciated!

WOW,that sounds like pre-release firmware..................
A few questions to get the ball rollin':
1) Which market/area are you using the phone?
2) Which carrier are you using/is this phone loaded-up with carrier-specific firmware out-of-the-box?
3) Are you able to use Samsung Pay/Google Pay/banking apps (if desired)?
4) Is the phone bootloader unlocked &/or rooted? If so,this usually kills most mfgs updates from being pushed to the phone & some tap-to-pay apps.
If you could provide a screen shot such as this (or the circled information) it may be of help to determine what's going on:
{

As for will flashing another areas firmware somehow prevent future updates for being automatically pushed to the phone,I'm not certain.
The screenshot info I requested should give others here a better idea of what's going on w/your update situation.
If everything is 100% as it was shipped by Samsung (no other firmware flashed/no bootloader unlock/root),you're still likely better off by switching to a different areas firmware & updating manually if necessary.

1. Costa Rica
2. To give you a little bit of information in Costa Rica it's illegal locking a phone to a specific carrier. You can buy it wherever you want and use the sim card of your preference. I just bought it there because it was cheaper. It's a two year plan with the carrier but again, if I want to use any carrier I can, as long as I keep paying them for the plan I'm using. Technically the phone is unlocked. It just has a ****ty preinstalled software on it and I want to get rid of it.
3. We don't have that here so it's not an issue for me, no worries there.
4. I haven't rooted my phone.
I attached the screenshot with the info you requested. Hopefully that can help you have a better understanding and others as well.
Thank you so much!

Is the pre-installed software carrier-specific garb, such as we get in the US & if so,is it of the same market/SIM Card you're using?
If the firmware/software is carrier specific & you're using another SIM Card/service,that may explain why you're not getting timely updates (that was the case w/me on an AT&T phone on T-Mobile at one time, not sure if such restrictions/stumbling blocks still exist w/AT&T or other carriers).

If the phone is unadulterated (factory firmware,no b/l unlock-root) & you're using the service provider of the installed firmware,it sounds like it's in the carrier's hands & they're in no hurry to push updates.
You could flash a non-carreir firmware, but, that may result in loss of WI-FI Calling/VoLTE/VVM or other carrier-specific items that you want to keep.
I found this one for Costa Rica on SamMobile, not sure if it's carrier specific,or,a SIM-Free firmware:
https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/galaxy-note9/SM-N9600/ICE/download/N9600ZHS1ARK2/247194/
It's quite a bit more current if you want to try it out, but,I'd make sure I have the factory firmware available to flash just in case there's something you don't like/etc.......

I'm not 100% sure on this, but, after doing a bit of digging, the firmware I posted appears to be specific to Kolbi
https://www.kolbi.cr/wps/portal/kolbi_dev/personas#/
So,that may be an option, but, then you're seemingly stuck w/their bloatware & possibly, lose some functionality of your current firmware.
The upside is a more current version/security update.
However, unless someone chimes in with a similar experience w/Costa Rican carrier firmwares, you're probably going to be the canary in the coal mine & have to flash other firmwares & find out if it's worth it to you to use another firmware.
SUX that you're left having to find out on your own, your situation w/July firmware is criminal & unfortunately, while an extreme example,is not a unique one.

That may be a one specific to a different carrier in Costa Rica. There are three carriers here and Kolbi is one of them, not the one I have though. Do you have any idea what functionality could I lose, apart from WiFi calling and the stuff you mentioned previously?
I want to try a completely different one, maybe not even a one specific to Costa Rica. What I'm not sure is what would happen if I, for example decided to try a Hong Kong one which seemingly has faster updates. I don't know if flashing a completely different region software would mess up my phone.

Wish I could be of help w/info regarding the WI-FI Calling/VoLTE/VVM with your carrier on another firmware, that varies from carrier to carrier as far as carrier-specific firmware & how the carriers handle it.
One way to try to glean some info regarding that would be to contact your carrier & ask if BYOD's have all of the functionality vs carrier-branded phones.
It's definitely a mixed bag here in the USA.
As long as you flash firmware for the SM-N9600 model, regardless of which region/carrier it's linked to,you should be OK with the basics (voice/messaging/data),the most you might have to do is check the APN to make sure you're getting the best service/what's specific to your service provider (should be automatic in SIM Free firmware,YMMV on carrier-specific firmware).
Knox will NOT be tripped w/official Samsung firmware,but,out-of-region firmware may render Samsung Pay/Google Pay useless.

For some reason Poland always gets the updates first. When I had the SGS5, Poland saw 2 5.0 updates first before we did. I guess they are letting them work out all the bugs

Most rumors i hear say that 6.0 is causing them to have to revamp wifi calling to work with the new system...from what i know of it wifi calling is what typically causes slow updates from tmo...also they are not blaming lg...they have had the update from lg the same amount of time everyone else has but are taking a long time to integrate their changes...it has been showing that it's in testing for months now on their site

I believe LG's research center is in Poland. That seems to make sense to research nearby areas than further away places in case things go bad. Easier to put out fires next to you than a mile away with the water bucket.
Just be happy tmobile doesn't roll out updates like sprint does. I'm a service and repair technician for sprint. I've seen so many G4's hardware fail when updating to M. Be appreciative to the fact that tmobile wants to make sure their update is a stable improvement and not a buggy disaster. Because sprint has a lot of that going on. Lol

So...you are complaining that a US carrier has not updated their firmware to what somewhere in Europe has in spite of it being a well known fact that US carrier branded phones usually take months longer to update than the unbranded phones in other parts of the world? This is something that is well known since the beginning of Android. The process goes: The pure google code is released, the manufacturer adapts it to their devices, it gets released to unbranded phones, it is also sent to branded carriers to add all of their crap to it, then it is sent back and forth between the manufacturer and carrier until it works flawlessly including updating and converting all data, including carrier bloat in an OTA package. This is then tested on a predetermined batch of test phones. Then when the carrier is happy with the OTA, then they decide when is the best time to release it and request time on Google servers to do so. It is also kind of selfish to say "Just give me the version without wifi calling since I don't use it anyway" without thinking of the million tech calls and posts they get about wifi calling not working. Also do not believe anyone you talk to in any customer service of LG or T-Mobile...they do not know what is going on and are told what to say. I could tell you some stories of some of the stupid answers I have seen from customer service reps. It actually looks like AT&T and Verizon are in the same boat as you guys...no MM yet.
If you or anyone are the type of person that needs the latest software that Google spits out and like being a beta tester for them, then why have you not purchased one of the Nexus devices with immediate updates and no carrier branding or bloat? They work great on T-Mobile and band 12. I went Nexus 6P in Sprint myself and will never go back to a branded phone.

The hardware failure has nothing to do with software updating. LG has released a statement recognizing that there is a problem with manufacturing; they blame a loose component connection.
As for the T-Mobile testing status: it has not changed from "Manufacturer Development" yet. T-Mobile is not officially conducting tests on the update yet.

Ah, yes. I see now. So someone has let you know that the full OTA package has been fully tested and just waiting for them to say "go?" That could be a bit frustrating. I hate to say it but they may be waiting until the G5 release at the end of February. I hope that is not it and they just want to gear up their tech support for any issues that might arise.
I laugh every time I read one of these posts where people complain about not getting carrier updates quick enough to suit them. It's usually the same people that will complain about too many bugs on quickly released software.
You want immediate updates? Buy a nexus.
You want quick updates? Buy global, not carrier models.
You want a carrier model? Quit complaining about how long it takes them to release software updates.
Carriers always have been considerably behind the global "unlocked" models on software updates. It will always be that way, and for good reason.

Absolutely. It's kinda pointless
It's your fault.
Want regular security updates? Buy a Nexus.
Want recent bug fixes? Buy a Nexus.
Want clear communication from LG or T-Mobile? Buy a Nexus.
Don't like the Nexus design? Buy a Nexus.
Remember folks, you need to make sure that you live within the constraints set by T-Mobile and LG for the G4. It's your fault for wanting things like regular updates or clear communication.
After all, you're paying them.

WiFi calling doesn't work very well for me. I am in a bad cell phone zone area also.
However, I always use WiFi at home to save data.
In the big picture, what is more important, Android 6.0 ir WiFi calling ?
I had Lollipop 5.1.1 on my LG G3 and it worked great.
Most people don't remember the fact that 5.1.1 has a search function while in Settings.
I found that extremely helpful for me. And it had the PIE submenu.
I think LG shortchanged everybody by not rolling out 5.1.1 on the G4.
When you consider that the manufacturers don't usually support a particular model for more than 2 years,
it totally sucks that they haven't upgraded the G4 for over 6 months!
I’m about to purchase a XZ1 Compact and have some questions before jumping onboard the Xperia bandwagon;
1a) The phone supports UMTS 1700/2100, Bands 4, 7, 13 and 66, all of which are what I need for Freedom Mobile (Wind) compatibility. As far as I know, LTE switching on the Freedom network is buggy unless the phone is flashed with the larger XZ1 firmware. Does this void warranty?
1b) If I receive an OTA update to Android 8.1 for the phone and it’s already had it’s firmware flashed, will I need to reflash the firmware from the XZ1?
1c) Does a factory reset also reset the flashed firmware?
1d) Any video tutorials on how to do this? Visual There’s this reddit thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/freedommob...uide_xpost_rsonyxperia_modifying_xz1_compact/ But an on-screen step-by-step would be best.
2) Does EIS still work in 3rd party camera apps like Camera FV-5? If so, is the quality in third party apps on par with Sony’s stock application?
3) Does the use of Nova Launcher allow me to swap app icons to stock Android icons?
4) With the nearing Mobile World Congress next month and some rumored devices, what is the chance of a XZ2 Compact being announced next month? I’m feeling like if I bite the bullet now and get the XZ1 Compact, I might regret if a successor was announced soon.
5) When connecting the phone to a Mac, does mounting the MicroSD card on Macs display it as an external drive or do I still have to use Android File Transfer?

Making modifications to the firmware, especially involving flashing firmware from a different model, definitely voids warranty.
If you ever need warranty service, just flash clean original stock firmware, and you should be good to go.

You'll likely be unable to install OTA updates since your firmware would be modified (assuming you followed the guide). You will still get update notifications though, but attempts to install will fail.
If you do wish to update, you'd probably have to manually do so using Xperia Companion or a third-party tool like flashtool or newflasher, then apply the modifications again.

Doubt it, sounds like an extremely niche use case.

Not sure, but given how locked down their camera is and Sony's love for keeping proprietary stuff off-limits, I won't bet on it.

I'm willing to bet good money on "NO". History has shown the compact variant usually announced and released in the bottom half of the year on a yearly basis.
So you'd be enjoying the latest and greatest compact for at least another six months.
EDIT: Welp, just heard a rumor that may cause me to lose my bet, so I'm going to redact my previous comment.
According to the rumor, they might be announcing a new compact at MWC 2018, which is about a month from now. However, suppose they do, it'll probably be weeks if not months until it's actually released and available, so you'll have to decide if it's worth it to wait that long, there's also the possibility that the rumor is false.
The way I see it, the XZ1C is a top of the line phone, a newer model isn't going to suddenly make it obsolete, it will still perform like a champ.
Not to mention the trend of Sony removing features from their phones compared to the previous generation, the rumored new compact might be gimped even more than the XZ1C, maybe it'll lose the headphone jack or something, hard to say.

I’m about to purchase a XZ1 Compact and have some questions before jumping onboard the Xperia bandwagon;

Wow, so many questions.
It's the best compact that Sony have made.
Buy it.
Both Xperia Companion and Android File Transfer will mount the internal storage and the SD card in an application-specific window. To the best of my knowledge, you cannot mount the phone and SD card directly in the Mac Finder, as you can using Windows Explorer.

No, it stays on the same version, just with all your data wiped.

Thank you! There was some news today that the 'compact' is supposed to be a budget model with a taller 5" screen and still with bezels. Here's the news:

Given the sizing, I'm out. I'd wait if it kept the form factor but increased the screen size... OR kept the screen size and shrunk the phone. Also, not a fan of 18:9 ratio.
I create a gofundme in the hopes to encourage a dev to find a way to unlock the bootloader on the note 9 Snapdragon
Mod Edit; improper external link removed
Not...gonna...happen
This is impossible without Samsung's signatures that's used when creating their proprietary firmware, including bootloaders. And this has NEVER been leaked or otherwise been made available to the public and never will be. Once a locked bootloader is flashed onto the phone at the factory, it is impossible to flash unofficial firmware, recoveries or bootloaders. Only official firmware with correct signatures can be flashed. If this was doable, there's lots of capable people out there who would have already been on top of this. The only thing that might help would be a leaked engineering firmware which is official but not fully functional and most likely wouldn't be unlocked anyway. Going off past experience with the leaked engineering bootloaders and kernels. which where problematic for daily use. I hope this helps you understand a bit more about this topic.
Unfortunately SOL....
Thank you for your explanation tx. Then our only shred of hope is a leaked firmware. Disappointing when you pay that much money and you get a locked bootloader, I which they had a dev version like HTC does sometimes

It's not disappointing though. You buy it knowing it's a locked bootloader.
You want to unlock the bootloader? By a N960F or a N9600.
I believe the lte bands are weaker on those models compared to the US version, at least that's what I saw on frequency check website. Correct me if I am wrong

I honestly have no idea. If you do some searching here, there's plenty of discussion of using the N960F and the N9600 on US carriers.

Yup, last phone I unlocked the bootloader on was the S7 Edge Exynos. Well I bought it used and the bootloader was already unlocked. From there I switched back to Nexus 6P, then Pixel XL. Didn't unlock on either of those. Since then I've had an S8+, Note 8, Pixel 2XL, and now the Note 9. Didn't even care about bootloaders on any of them.
And WiFi calling works on T-Mo with the U1 firmware as does VoLTE. I use Google Voice and Hangouts, so video calling from the stock dialer doesn't work for me anyway.

Honestly the only thing I miss now with having a non-rooted phone is the ability to do full app backups. It kills me, in this day and age, that there is no way in Android to backup/restore all app data. Everything else about rooting for me was about fixing issues (battery, interface, tethering etc), which are all kinda non-issues now. Would be nice to completely uninstall apps, but disabling them works too.
I'm also not going to buy the inferior Exynox just so i can root it to make it slightly better, but less great, than the Snapdragon variant. Rooting also kills a lot of features and apps.
My $0.02

Yes it uses the stock dialer, but it doesn't support video calling or VoLTE. If you have T-Mo it DOES support WiFi calling and VoLTE, but not video calling.

You're missing that it's for the 9600, which is a Snapdragon, not the 960U. Samsung allows the 9600 to be bootloader unlocked. They don't allow rhr 960U to be bootloader unlocked.

I see the global version supports wifi calling and VOLTE and has as much band support as my Huawei P30 Pro so the coverage should be fine but will this phone actually work on AT&T after the 3g shutdown? I've read forums where people "call" *#somenumbers*#" and it lets them turn on VOLTE without the carrier checking compatibility. Any advice or input would be great. I really hate iPhones and Samsungs which seems to be all US carriers want to support.

I'm on Tmobile works perfectly on 4G LTE. 3G isn't an issue as that only applies to phones that rely on 3G data and Yes, VoLTE works!
That's good to know because ATT is basically trying to force me to buy one of maybe 3 phones. I wish I could keep my P30 Pro but I cant seem to get the update that enables VOLTE so I need a new phone and this seems much nicer then the new Samsung.

I tried that already, I don't see any codes to unlock the options on my phone. I think the APN is part of the problem. I was told to use NXTGENPHONE. Further research shows that ATT doesn't allow any thing they don't approve to use VoLTE or VoWiFi regardless if the phone has the feature. Unless you know a sneaky way around this, I suspect the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra won't work either.

I just want to confirm that you have the global rom version and not the Chinese rom. I'd hate to spend $1,000 on a phone that only works for 6 months
I bought the Chinese version and have tried all roms, but settled on the rom from Xiaomi.eu as there are far more features and less bloat. BTW, the Chinese variant now sells for around $900 from Giztop for the base model. I bought my 12/256 for $1045 when it was first released. I heard the Global variant was selling as high as $1300. Considerable savings going with the China variant, waiting a week, unlocking the bootloader and flashing another rom.

I've been reading that having the Chinese version causes issues with AT&T specifically and no one can seem to confirm that having either rom will work with ATT after the 3g shutdown. My current phone, the Huawei p30 Pro is the global version that had the most ATT frequencies of the p30 series but apparently the only version that doesn't have VOLTE. I just don't want to spend $1,000 on a new phone that has no guarantee of working after the shutdown or even on the 5g network. According to the frequency lists online, the Chinese version doesn't support ATT 5g. Is there any difference in hardware between the global and Chinese variant or is the only difference the ROM installed on it? Meaning does the rom determine the frequencies supported?

Saving money is what I'm all about. Do you know of a guide to flashing the rom? I've never used twrp or any of that sort of software. Any guides on this phone specifically would be great.
So I found a YouTube video that seems pretty straight forward:
After you flashed the new rom does your phone auto update? Can you go to settings and get updates through the GUI or do you manually have to connect it to the PC and flash it each time ?

I decided not to buy the phone after speaking with a few people from AT&T. They informed me that the way AT&T will be deploying the mandatory VOLTE would render the phone useless based on their encryption. Because the phone is not white listed they will not send the required encryption to the phone so VOLTE would not activate after the 3G shutdown and if it somehow was activated before, they would deactivate it on the shutdown date. It is really proving that living here in the US is not a great as it once was. We are now being forced to pick 1 of 3 phone companies. Apple, Samsung or the google Pixel. I assume since they paid the most in back end deals. All of which I hate. Looks like
I'll be hacking/rooting a Samsung. If anyone knows of a theme to make a Samsung look like a Huawei, please post it here. Very disappointed to lose my IR blaster and all the better various hardware that these overseas phones have to offer. Uncle Sam said no.

FIrst of all, I would switch networks. No question on that one, as they are trying to force you to buy the phones that they sell. Also, if you are using a Snapdragon variant of a Samsung used in the United States, you will not be able to unlock the bootloader and/or root it. That is only possible on the exynos variants, which are probably not whitelisted on AT&T.
Hey guys! I have been scouting around for Note 8 help but thought it was time to join myself.
Hopefully if I am able to solve my specific problem or get my questions asked it can help someone else.
Specifically, right now, I picked up and refurbished a Samsung Galaxy Note 8 since I have one currently that is phenominal, and wanted one in the back pocket in case anything happens but it is locked to ATT, which isnt the real problem. The real problem is that it is still on Android 7.1.1 and I would like to get it to Android 9 Pie.
I am unsure of a few things like whether I need all updates between 7 and 9, or if I can jump straight to it. But things of that sort.
It sucks that its ATT locked but I feel its worse that its on old Android since I refurbed it, (fixed screen and replaced with fresh samsung battery) but its being held back in certain functional capabilities. Either way, I am a techy, not yet able to solder, but definitely able to troubleshoot my way around a Windows Blue screen of death.
Looking forward to learnin more!

Alright, there are two versions of firmware available for your device. One is "branded" and has carrier bloat, whereas the other does not have carrier bloat but might have issues with VoLTE (probably not, but there is a chance). What one would you prefer? Let me know if you have any questions regarding the difference.

Thanks for the research and yes I do have questions if its not too much of an issue:
1.) Carrier bloat is like the usual and can just be deleted anyways correct?
2.) In what scenarios (in case everything was working fine with OTA updates) would the phone have downloaded a version without bloat?
3.) Would updating to the non-bloated version cause any issues since the phone is still carrier locked?
4.) Lastly, for the firmware, would I need to download multiple updates until that point or just straight to the firmware?
If not, I can research the answers as I have been on it on and off for a month with research but other than that, you're a god send.
By the way, if #1 is true, I'll just take the bloatware no doubt just to be as safe as possible.
Thanks again for all the help @ethical_haquer
Been busy researching in the Samsung Note 8 ATT threads and I was able to find the answer to number 4 in that using Full ODIN files is a complete flash and different than just an update which requires the previous updates.
The answer to number 3 from what I have seen no. The only thing is that certain features may NOT work such as VoLTE; pretty much you already answered 3 and I was literally too dumb to see that until I started writing this message. *face palm
Question 2 is pretty much inconsequential so don't worry answering that. Its was just curiosity. But for anyone who does see this possibly, my speculation is that NO, the carrier version would never download the non-carrier version. The non-branded update is for those unlocked phones that receive over-the-air (OTA) updates that were not associated with any carrier, in other words buying a phone directly from samsung's website.
For 1, I am guessing it is "Yes" since I was able to do that in the past with all my other phones. But either way it is not a make it or break it so it doesn't matter.
I have been able to find some full ODIN files for the updates I was looking for, so will be attempting my first flash soon. Will be posting all my findings to the thread I was reading just to potentially help anyone else (though rare since this device is getting real old) who has the same questions I had and I can get them up to speed without having to search everything
Just finished flashing the ATT Note 8 to and the Answer to Number 1 is that NO, you cannot Uninstall the bloatware
Again, will post all these findings to the proper thread in after completed
Sorry for the late reply! I would try installing the firmware for the SM-N950U1 (notice the 1). It should work and won't have carrier bloat.

You're all good!
I may but I actually have to find one more update I am looking for (Full ODIN FILES). My daily driver note 8 is on N950USQS7DTE5 and it is a T-Mobile Version (though it bein g TMO is inconsequential at the moment. Just thought I might mention it).
That is the update I would like for ATT just so that I know there wont be any differences (or less differences) between my daily driver and this. This is me being picky at this point but isn't the point of life getting what you want? I found one update above that but different bootloader. So for whatever reason may happen, no going back.
What I currently flashed to was N950USQS3BRA8 so it's still on Android 7.1.1 but I did this just to test to the process (my first flashing). Now I am ready.
So I will look for that then flash it and update as usual
Just found, or couldnt find, that ATT has the same update so will just go with what I have. Close as I can get
