hello
my mi8 (10.3.2.0) went black after i downloaded a big picture file. it will not start any more. There is not option to join fastboot. The only possible thing is that qualcom usb was shown in USB setting in Computer. I changed battery and charging port already. There is no change... The phone will not start.
The only sign of life is: sometimes the led near ear hearing lits 2 times if i push power button. The same reaction when i plug power in or connect to Computer. This behavior changes. Sometimes the led goes 1 per 2sec all the time if i push power or connect/charge it. Sometimes no led reaction was Seen. What happened?

First, I have helped many people unbrick their phones using the following steps. But I have not yet had the need to do these steps on a Mi8. So if this works please report back and click thanks.
You need to get the phone into EDL mode, in a worse case scenario you can do that by using a EDL cable
Assuming that your Device is a Global Device
Download this Fastboot Rom : http://en.miui.com/download-346.html Download the Full Stable fastboot version and not the Recovery version.
if your device is the China version : Here is the link for the Stable China Rom
Your bootloader may be relocked, I am not sure. But as long as the device is registered to you, you should not have any issues unlocking it again.
Use a PC
Make sure that you enable system wide ADB privileges.
Next download the fastboot rom and unpack it.
Unpack rom
Look for the file called flashall.bat ( see screenshot)
Double click, wait for it to finish
when it completes, the software on your phone will be wiped and restored to like new
As long as the phone is registered to you and you can sign into your account , I don't expect that you will have any issues.
Hello,
thanks a lot. I have some questions:

Your Data is gone, my steps are for fixing the phone, if you absolutely must have the data, you will need to take your phone into a shop that has the tools to read the chip and recover your data. Yes, the steps that I mentioned will fully wipe your device.
Read the Signature: Click the thanks button, or be ignored. Clicking Thanks, is my only motivation, unless you can send cash.

That also means, that after it, the phone is out of order..... There is not other way in EDL to read the data? There was TWRP before on the phone. Is there a way only to flash the bootloader of phone, after it i can use fastboot with twrp image and then i get connection to my data?
Thanks a lot

I downloaded the Stable rom ( FASTBOOT ROM ) from the link that I posted, and then took a screenshot. The name of the fastboot is : dipper_global_images_V10.3.2.0.PEAMIXM_20190508.0000.00_9.0_global
It sounds like you downloaded the Recovery rom. (AS mentioned it needs to be the fastboot rom)
Regarding Data, you need to take it to a shop for that. there is absolutely no conventional way to recover data from a bricked device, you need a special tool for that, and if the data is encrypted the tool will not work either
Edit:
One last things, its possible that your battery has and issue, or there may be a problem with the usb port. Did you experience any issues with power spikes, excessive heat, or liquid damage?

Sorry to hear about your troubles, I have never filed a warranty claim with Xiaomi so I am not sure if their service is good or not. Hopefully they are good to their customers. On the other hand, parts for this phone are actually inexpensive, I am so shocked by the low prices, I will go ahead and by some parts just in case ( we have 3 Mi'8s in our house)
When you take the phone to the shop, have them test the flex cable. It looks like this : https://www.ebay.com/itm/Motherboar...508657?hash=item1ef9a74831:g:1g0AAOSwCgFcx~Ar I have seen similiar issues on other phones and in some cases the issue was just the flex cable, or simply reseating the cables will sometimes work. Just test it before reassembling the phone. Are you sure that you didn't damage the amoled screen when you removed it?

Well i think the screen is ok. I just remember one fact. Once, why i did not know, the mobile started and went black after 3 min. The mobile was lying in the sun at the windows. I try to give the mi8 to a friend, who is going to china next month. There are no shops or repair services here in germany. The only thing the others do, is chaging batterie or charging port for about 70€ each.
The most thing i rembember when i will buy a new one is that i will have to buy a mobile with extra SD slot. The time i spended is much more worth than the mobile will ever be. My last phones of samsung had never such problems, even if i bricked them by trying to bypass know while rooting...
Thanks

Unfortunately you have had some really bad luck, and from what I have read and been told, it's pretty unusual for a Xiaomi phone to fail so soon. I am left questioning whether or not Xiaomi's reaction is based on how long you have owned the phone? It's really strange to tell you to contact the vendor for warranty service, unless you have owned the phone for less than 90 days. In addition, I am really disappointed in Xiaomi for giving you such poor service. If you end up buying another phone, One Plus would be a good option, I have read that they are slow but that they do offer decent product support. Your experience will definitely influence my next purchase, incredible!
It's great to hear that you have a friend visiting China. Especially if your friend plans to visit southern China. He could easily find someone in a Szechuan tech market that would repair it while he waits and it would be dirt cheap. ( I spent 3 months in China about 12 years ago ) and it's a very awesome place to visit. In my experience there, vendors will quote a foreigner a high price at first. I would usually offer them 75% less, and most of the time they will usually take it., If not, I would so okay no thanks, and walk away, and they would usually come after me and agree to the price. However, if I was quoted a really reasonable price, I would not try to negotiate.
Good Luck, maybe the solder on your motherboard shorted from the heat, i that is the case your existing components can be reballed and the phone would be good as new. I actually had a solder issue on my last phone, but it was my fault.
Good Luck

You are right, my other xiaomi last since 4 Years without any problem. I dropped them several times and also the fell in the water, without any problems.
My Mi8 was from October 2018. I used a "lovemei" Cover, never dropped it until it went black. If you look at it, there no sign of any use.
Here in Germany we have no official service. I have to contacted the Shop where I bought for several times. The is no answer until now. No facebook, no email and no ebay answer. Until now the are not selling any phones anylonger. I think they do not exist anymore. Perphaps the just changed their name. Though the sell it per UK shop, they are from Hong Kong. So the is not possible to get any solution with them.

I had several Samsung mobiles until now. Never had any problems with them. Once I broke my note4 and i wrote to Samsung. After paying 80€ the mobile was fixed... Though i rooted it before and the KNOX status was 1. In october I decited to buy Xiaomi MI8 after a long decision. Until it broke I liked it. There is no one to blame, that it broke. And even when the would be no chance of getting my data back or get it repair... Things just happen. But I will never acept the behavior of the vendor. Never.

Good luck, I just bricked my Mi8 yesterday for the first time. By testing something for a friend. I had a similar issues to yours but in my case I was able to restore the phone by using the flashall.bat method that I mentioned earlier.
Top tier Samsung and iPhones may be pricy but without a doubt they last seemingly forever. In fact I still have every Samsung and Apple device that I have ever owned and every single unit still works flawlessly!
Both of those companies use Grade A1 components, which are much less likely to fail, so at the end of the day the cost is truly justified. On the other hand, Xiaomi uses quality components as well and they too have a fairly excellent reputation, so maybe in your case it's just a case of bad luck. I also use the lovemei case, and it's heavy but extremely protective, it reminds me of the old Galaxy S5 Otter cases. I watch my thermals like a hawk and never overclock and my phone stays very cool in this case, I will bet that when you phone is finally fixed that it will be a simple solution such as static electricity.
Now that I have remembered about the effects of static , if you still have the phone, unplug the battery. Press and hold the power for 10 seconds the plug the battery back in again. That may enable your phone to work again. I can't believe that I forgot about that option.
Good luck ?

" Sameer: Sorry to inform you that as the device will be sent back with out any repair as it was rooted."
Unbelievable.
The phone had been playing up for 2 weeks, shutting down between 70-40% battery for no good reason. I flashed 5.1 again and factory reset it. Surely that is enough to un-root it? Or do they have some special way of telling if it's been rooted before?
At the moment it seems they are posting it back to me, so I'm down the £7 in postage to them, and I now have a faulty £500 phone.
Anyone know what I should do?
I originally rooted it with 'CF-Auto-Root-shamu-shamu-nexus6.zip' and run the 'root-windows.bat' - believe while in fastboot?
I also flashed the 5.1 update straight from the google website - also through fastboot I believe..
But I do remember when I booted it up just before packing it up, that the unlocked padlock wasn't there...
I even tried google but they won't RMA it because I didn't buy it from them.
Well ,I presume that Motorola or any other company would not accept a Bootloader unlocked device .

Did you flash the entire factory image, including userdata and cache? Are you sure that you relocked your bootloader?
just something to know and live by.. generally, only google will except devices with an unlocked bootloader(with root) for exchange or repair. sometimes you can get away with it from other companies, but only google would give you no issues with it.
Where did you buy it? Could try returning it to them after a full factory / relock
It was relocked after I did the full flash to 5.1 as per googles android website (the flash-all.bat route).
Someone has told me there is a status flag? 0 = locked, 2 = re-locked, 3 = un-locked.
So maybe when I locked it again for stock, it was set to 2, how can I change it to 0? Maybe that will 'fool' them at least....

2 is stock. I have one that is 100% stock , never rooted or unlocked and it shows 2. My only guess would be you left some root files on the device. After you flashed back to stock did you wipe data/ factory reset?

I completely flashed everything, so there wouldn't be anything left. I then did a factory reset just for added mesasure! So far I can't see how they knew it was rooted. As it's impossible that it was rooted when they got it. So there's either something secret or they're lying so they don't have to repair or replace it....?

Well if they are lying then ask them to provide proof that it was "rooted" at the time they received it. If they cannot provide any proof then there are some sales of goods act stuff you can start applying on them.
You have a warranty on the device provided that the phone is not modified in any way that would void this warranty.
Motorola are are bunch of pricks when it comes to Customer Services, i wanted to send back my Moto X 2nd Gen which had an unlocked bootloader. Even though they accepted bootloader unlocked phones, it didnt reach the customer service team and i was refused, and then told later once they received the memo that i could return it. I ended up selling it on ebay for more than i paid for it which turned out alright

Sama as LG. That's why I decided to buy from Play this time.
Just as an update from my post last week:
Dear xxx,
Thank you for contacting Motorola.
I have now heard back regarding your Nexus 6 unit. After carrying out the initial repair the engineers at our repair centre then discovered a more serious fault with the battery on the phone as it started to swell during their testing.
As this battery swelling issue is irreparable we are instead going to exchange your phone for a new unit. Unfortunately the repair centre do not have any spare Nexus 6 units in stock at the moment. They are currently awaiting delivery of new stock. As soon as this arrives they will dispatch a new unit to you.
Please accept my apologies for any further inconvenience that this causes you. We will try our best to get this resolved as soon as possible for you.
Kind regards,
Motorola Mobility UK Ltd.

Good result it seems. New phone. Not sure what changed their mind though, because apart from moaning to the online chat guys (who appeared useless) I didn't actually contact the repair guys, I just expected them to return it and I would take things from there.
But the more serious point here is if you experience these issues with the battery that I did (random shutdowns between 70-40%) then you may find that your battery starts to swell and who knows what could have happened to me or my home after that....
Hey mate
I got to send mine in for the same reason as you....

I very strongly believe that this is a chicken-and-egg problem. Generally, the battery reading problem is a software problem, BUT, it can probably lead to overcharging, which causes swelling. There is a bootloader procedure to reset the battery data that should be performed *immediately* when it starts exhibiting "early shutdown" symptom.
I also suspect that the quick-charge chargers are supplying more current than the battery itself is capable of taking, increasing the battery temperature and prematurely aging it. My personal recommendation is to limit yourself to 5 volt at 1 amp.

hey guys, so i have the newest lp bootloader, i installed microkat for testing purposes, then i saw blisspop v3.0 is out, then i downloaded, flashed and it was well over 20 minutes, so i pressed and held power button to get out of the stuck flash process, and then when i go to do power button + vol down to get into recovery it just powers off the device, i do have a low battery, and alot of the fastboot stuffs say low battery, so i left it to charge then i flashed this all + twrp 2.8.6.0:

and still whe ni try to enter recovery or factory reset from the menu it just powers off

I cant tell what % the battery is at, but last i had it at was 7% so its quite possible its very low, but the issue is theres no sure way for me to know if its charging, its hard to explain, but i have a wonky charger and to charge my phone i need to fiddle with the wire to keep it charging then i need to not touch it at all so it charges :/

7% won't do it. You don't have an old charger laying around? Even my Motorola Bluetooth charger will charge the moto. I've got 8 or 10 old chargers and only one of those won't work.

Thing is no matter what charger i use i have to fiddle it and theres no sure way if it will charge, my device now wont even boot up, i think its the battery issue but ive tried 4 chargers, all of them are the same, no sure way if my phone is charging or not... i think ill submit it to warranty, problem is i have local warranty not Motorola one, so they have different rules, they only accept devices that are not "jailbroken" (thats what the warrenty rules say, so i will see what they can do, maybe some nice talk will get me in there good books lol

In the US Motorola warranty is void if u unlock the bootloader and root it...Which I have done...But when I needed a new screen (because of a bad pixel) they didn't care and got me a free replacement
Try calling Motorola and say "I was updating to lollipop (with 80% charge) and all of a sudden the phone went black ....Blame Motorola.....I used a similar excuse when I bricked my S3 and Samsung bought it....
Hope all goes well

Hi guys,
I forgot to reset my phone before flashing a new image (latest Beltz), and triggered FRP. I changed the password, waited over 96 hours, but still got the "sign in with device owner's account" when I try to log in and set it up.
Thinking it's a ROM issue, I flashed Google's official OTA images (6.0.0 and 7.1.1), waited over 72 hours and it still wouldn't allow me to log in. Small change is that on the 7.1.1, I get the "you have to wait 24 hours because of password change" message. I waited over 80 hours and still get the same message.
I can log into my Google account just fine from a browser. I validated all the security notifications to confirm I was the one trying to log in.
When I click "review devices" under the "device activity", I am unable to remove the device (or any other for that matter!).
This is a brand new phone (my 3rd N6). I love this phone so much. Any help would be very much appreciated, as I have been living without a phone for over 2 weeks now.
Thanks,
SFX
I done the same thing you did awhile back. Did you turn off the device and not touch it for 24+ hrs before you attempted to log in? I was without my N6 for about week. I even called Google and they told me to not touch my device for 24hrs and after that time then I could log in. If you have tried what I was talking about, then do that... Also be 100% sure that you are entering the correct Pw.
I'm pretty sure when you change your Google password you have to wait 24hrs before you can factory reset with twrp.
I had the same problem but I could never get back in. The only way I fixed it was to flash a old factory rom before the advent of FRP. 5.0 rom I believe.
Tried the earliest available Factory image (not OTA this time) which turned out to be 6.0, waited a week but still get the silly "24 hours" FRP message. I emailed the Google support three weeks ago, but no answer.
I'm very close to giving up and buying a new phone.
Somehow I doubt it when you write "this is a brand new phone". No new N6 has been produced for several years.
Maybe your phone is actually used, and now needs the previous owner's login.

Use fastboot commands to wipe everything, then fastboot flash new system images. Other than that use Wug's Nexus Toolkit to help you do all that. **** if I had your device in hand I could fix your problem, I am a pro at fixing these issues, personal experience.

curiosity, would "fastboot format userdata" fix this issue? If I plan to sell mine, I'd hate to be stuck with this issue too!

You just need to log out of the Google account before you factory reset the phone and that's it.
You can flash stock img after that or do whatever you want.
How about you quit being a troll? His story sounds credible, and you can find any phone that didn't sell like pancakes brand new in many places.
The lack of good faith around here is a severe disappointment. I hated to believe that such a thing is possible myself, which is the reason I stayed without a working phone for over a month (yes, in 2018!). That's how much I love the Nexus 6!
I will admit that I left out a detail from my story for the sake of clarity and brevity (but we're past that now I guess...). I had decided to create a new throwaway Google account when I flashed the latest Beltz (I had random daily reboots which drove me crazy, so I thought about doing a clean slate). For some of you it might be hard to believe, but I had never heard of FRP and didn't think about resetting. Anyway, I might have triggered something strange through a very unlikely sequence of events.
Not to get preachy but this got me thinking about phone ecosystems and how one has little recourse in the face of almighty Google. At least, it's clear that they don't bother answering. It is extremely frustrating not to be able to log into a device you own (and did I mention love?). I just got a OnePlus 6, and it's nice, but no wireless and I have to upgrade all my micro-USB cable with USB-C. That said, it's snappy, has an extra-customizable OS, and a very bright screen. I overcome the awkward aspect ratio by using the pinch-to-fill in YouTube Vance. The earpiece can turn into a speaker using some Magisk module. Apart from that, it's crazy small and the lack of wireless is unforgivable, but I'll admit that it charges very fast.
Frankly, it was a coin toss between another Nexus 6 and the OnePlus 6. The only reason I went for OnePlus is that I wanted to also get the Bullets Wireless headphones (apparently, the magnetic play/pause feature was only OnePlus-compatible for now). Ironically, they're out of stock in my region.
H4X0R46, I don't plan to try the "fastboot format userdata". I did more than enough format userdata through TWRP when I still had hope. If you deem the information important enough, let me know and I can try it. Otherwise, I'll just sell it (for parts I guess) on eBay.
Thanks everyone for trying to help. A lesser thank you to the ones who didn't assume good faith (you're still trying to help out I'm sure!).
Cheers!

Most of the classic phones that are sold as new are in fact refurbished used ones. There is whole cottage industry in refurbishing old phones, and not all sellers are honest about it.

Fair point. But it's mostly a semantics argument as far as our discussion is concerned.
I got my Nexus 6 on Amazon.de where it's advertised as new. I have been using the phone with a newly created Google account since I got it months ago.

im gonna spend the 15 to fix it probably but I bought the s9+ before i found out how and i didnt really blame huawei, im just saying since they stopped providing bootloader unlock codes, the support people will have for it will be alot less.

I agree ... Huawei system updates and verifications is so much pain in the ass so it is better (for Huawei) to stop providing unlocking codes. The failure rate is too big
I love Huawei for the camera performance, but next time i will buy a Google pixel 3 xl (camera performance almost the same and big XDA comunity).
Hi all,
I've gotten the phone 5 days ago, had my eye one it since the day it came out, it finally became attractively priced. I got from not the most reputable source, the box was opened, I didn't fret too much cause I'd gotten opened box new phones before and they were totally fine. They gave a warranty voucher but I really do not expect them to do much (or anything) should something happen.
So ever since I've gotten the phone I've encountered following issues:
Overheating, throttling, low bench scores, dimming screen. At first I though I had a faulty screen or some major bug in the SW/FW that would constantly loose brightness for no apparent reason. Reading up helped understand this is an overheating issue common to many 888 smartphones. That's slightly relieving, however then there was some BS with Xiaomi throttling apps and not benches, I assume after the exposure Xiaomi made changes and now they throttle benches as well. It would be great if somebody could confirm this cause my GeekBench5 scores are stable at 851/3250! What a shame... That's actually lower than the 870.
Randomly dropping refresh rate. Now this is not related to overheating cause it can happen on an idle phone. So far it lasted anywhere from 1 to 10 minutes and I wouldn't say it drops all the way to 60, rather 70-80 Hz is where it's at.
Loose power and volume buttons. Having owned the phone for only 5 days this is very annoying, I am not sure if it was this way out of the box since I put it inside the case in the store and haven't really used the phone without it since. I've had a couple other owners confirm their buttons are fixed solid which makes this even more frustrating. They are really loose, as in they can go anywhere within the socket but still function normally. I imagine I will stop worrying about this with time especially if used with a case. But is there perhaps a way to somehow fix it?
Fried WIFI modules and motherboards. Now this is really worrying. Especially with people on the web talking about it like it's just a matter of time before this happens. In a parallel thread @hhwjthje had a theory about some 'bluetooth voice' being exposed on a HW monitor app, however I can't really understand what he meant.
Other than those 4 points I've been loving the phone so far. However considering I expect the seller to resist any warranty service I'm wondering if I should sell device while it's still early.

1. he was just trying to help. act nice to people from whom you want help. and from what you have encountered so far seems you got a bad apple.
2. for problem 1 and 2, have you tried flashing the stock rom again ? i wouldnt trust the preinstalled rom if the phone was bought from not the most reputable source.
3. loose buttons ? best you could do is take it into service. nothing you can do from your end.

Well, it is not the best of situations, I admit. You pay a hefty sum for a phone that was probably brought from China inside a suitcase. You mention that there is no warranty, yet you're being told to return it. I bought phones like that several times before and this is the first time I have problems. After googling I realize the whole 888 Mi 11 line up is problematic.
I am just trying to gain as much info before I make my decision, which won't be returning it, since I can't do that. As a matter of fact I want to keep to phone, but I want to figure out whether it's worth the risk of having it randomly bricked one day. I also want to know if all Mi 11 Ultras throttle and have heating issues, or is there just too many bad apples?
2. The ROM installed is Global MIUI 13 Stable. I was thinking about trying the weekly EU builds, but I heard of people saying it's worse than Stable. Also the last time I bootloaded an Android was probably 9 years ago, so I'd rather not just yet.
Also, how does custom ROMs and warranty generally work? Don't you lose your warranty?

do you have warranty or not ?
the processor is known to have overheating issues. it affects every smartphone running it. the reason why i suggested flashing a new rom is because it could have preinstalled unofficial apps. that could get your data, credit card info etc. you could flash the same version.

Frankly I am not so worried about overheating and performance compared to other units. I just ran Antutu and scored 789763, which makes it obvious that Xiaomi now throttles GeekBench5 and not Antutu. Also I realized I was running benches in normal and not performance mode before, which made a significant difference for GB5 - 965 single-core, still below reference values for the 888 however. I don't game, so if Xioami are using throttling to make up for cheaping out on cooling to prolong the phones life - I am okay with that. The wobbly buttons? I guess I can live with that eventually. I'm just really don't want to get a brick one day just cause, you know ... heat?

you are safe. the phone is smart enough to throttle down if it overheats. dont leave it in direct sunlight and dont use it while charging. even if you do, the heat will kill just the battery. the phone wont brick.

I heard otherwise. Because of the wifi module. Which eventually kills the motherboard.
usually those modules are soldered at a higher temperature compared to a temperature of an overheated phone. the phone is smart enough and usually performance cores are used when needed. still, if you are worried about it, i recommend buying a blackshark cooler. or you could unlock the bootloader, root it and underclock both your cpu and gpu. beside getting better battery life, that would help with heat generated.
Now I mostly worry the loose buttons will mess up the IP rating and it seems like it might.
The temps seem more than reasonable though. As I understand with phones it's pretty much the same temperature across the board, and while idle with WIFI on and some background apps my temps get all the way down to 30-31 with 25 Celsius ambient. I understand there is no way to monitor real-time load temperatures without root. I saw people reporting temps as high as 38 while idle. It feels like Xiaomi might have implemented much stricter throttling after so many devices died.
This thread is useless and waste of time,
1- Poster is rude and with bad language, does not take any advice seriously, and attacking people.
2- You either bought a lemon, or a second hand, or you do not know how to use it. Yet you complain about all solutions.
3- You do not give your self any chance to test a solution. So there is no point in advising you since we know you'll only complain.
Now I'll try my chance and give you a few solutions, while I know you'll attack me. But this is what we do here, helping all types of people,,,
Firstly, which version is your device originally? Is it global out of box? Is it Chinese with global rom?
1- This device over heating issue has already been resolved, all you got to do is use your device for 7-10 days and the problem will be completely gone. The device will build algorithm of your device usage and will balance it with power consumption behaviour, this will drop temperature a significant drop.
2- Regarding refresh rate issue, this is a well know issue that has started since MIUI13 release, you can only live with it for now until new update coming very soon. Or you can update your themes app and system app, there are also some other apps you can try, I update them manually and this issue rarely occuring now, like 3 times a week.
3- You either bought a second hand one, or a refurbished device, or (unlikely) an out of box device. This issue isn't that hard to fix, all you got to do is open the back cover, you can watch a few videos that shows you how to, it will be either lose screws, a lost screw, broken peace than you can buy a replacement through Ali express. This will be a really easy fix that you can do it your self with very basic skills.
4- Not sure if your have a friend WIFI module or a fried motherboard or just worried about this.
To clarify things, use original Rom or just use Roms from original source and move away from MIUI.eu and other 3rd party OS and you'll be good to go.
Hope this attitude of yours accept advice and gives you some knowledge of your device.
From playstore search for MIUI downloader and install it. Go to APPS tab and update main apps you can see including camera.
For other system apps updates open this link

and scroll up for themes, security, and other stuff you want, and wait for new updated apps. Usually all China apps will work on global rom miui13, so do not worry about the line (may not work on global rom). But make sure not to update anything that can brick your device, you'll figure out which ones by your self when you read description .
Good luck
@hassanaliyeh, hi. Thanks for your extended answer.
1 - I've read something similar. Seems weird but okay, I guess I will wait.
3 - I really don't think so, the phone seems to be completely new. If it was refurbished they would have taken care of that I suppose. Also I don't believe it is possible to refurbish something visually to this new state. The battery tests also show it's new

either way, your choice. Either contact the seller, contact bank to get back your money, send back device, or they will nominate a store to fix it, or if I were you, I'd open the device and check it my self, then I'd buy parts of anything broken.
just remember, if you open it your self, disconnect battery as step 0, before step 1.

I paid cash. Went to the store yesterday. They told me I can bring it for service to have a look Monday, but refused to return the money. Really doubt I want to use their service and would rather use one of the official Xiaomi ones.
The main reason I want to have the buttons fixed is not to void the IP rating. Which as I understand will be voided completely once I open the device. An authorized service center should be able to restore the hermiticity when they reassemble?

Just FYI, IP rating does not protect your from water damage, any water damage to device will be out of your pocket.
Let them fix it. And they will difentely protect device better than you as they have better tools for that.
If I were you I'd stay there and see what is happening to my device and how they will fix it. If I can
