I got August update today - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Guides, News, & Discussion

Did anyone else getting it

What chipset? (Snapdragon / Exynos)
What Carrier?

Att snapdragon

Me too! Anyone know if there's anything cool in this one? My phone feels much snappier compared to the July update but that's probably just in my head. (att snapdragon here)

Yep I got it and it was posted earlier today here as well.

I'll give it to them. I have moved on to the Note 10 and just happened to check for updates. Usually they wait till after the new phone drops before they return to updates for the previous model. Unless they forgot to put in the mojo in the July patch to slow our phones.View attachment 4808141

Just got it late last night, seems only security as far as I can tell.

I got two updates in two days. The battery life got much better for me. It was garbage.

Yeah, it is that time of the year where Samsung pushes an update to make our phone's battery life suck so we buy the newer one. That's why root is essential. Bye bye locked up phones.

Only 1 update here but I can confirm that battery live now is outstanding, I am not sure why and hope processor is not throttled.
Unplug the charger around 9 am and by 6 pm battery was at 82%. Usually it would be at 50ish

3.5 hrs of SOT plus almost 6 hrs of youtube and I'm still at 47%. I can live with that.

Is there any proof of this. I keep seeing people say this but can't say I have experienced it. Granted my last phone that I used for more then a year was the note 4 and besides old batteries it worked as well as day one. Got the note9 about a month ago new and would seriously consider legal action if Samsung sent an update that "harmed" the device or user experience.

Well, your proof is the huge battery life difference between oreo and Pie. I used to get 9 hrs of SOT on oreo easily then after upgrading to my first pie update it went down to barely 5 or max 6 hours. To give them a little bit of credit, it is better now, but no where near oreo.

It's funny you say that my longest SOTs have all been on Pie. But with pie I usually average about eight to nine hours SOT with ease. My longest SOT was 12 hours also on Pie. I have the Snapdragon model for reference. But in all seriousness with the few days T-Mobile has had the August patch and like the one day the July patch existed lol August is a whole new beast that's just overall better. Only thing I regret is jumping the bootloader but I was having some issues with flashing and just said screw it. Who knows Bootloader S2 might be the rootable one.

Ah, that's why I noticed battery drain after the second update in 4 days. Yeah well, I'm not upgrading to Samsung products ever again. As soon as this contract with Samsung insights is up, I'm ditching this N9, going back to my S9+ until the next LG comes. I quit Samsung for a long time and was so happy with LG, then I got a dud V30 and had no choice but to get Samsung again. I hate the direction Samsung is going with their phones now. If I wanted crapple, I'd buy crapple. Done with them.

Since I can't afford the unlocked, so called, "flagships", it is going to be stock android non carrier for me from now on. What's wrong with a pixel a? Nothing. Or maybe a Chinese phone.

My N9 has only been on pie. Just got it from AT&T about a month ago. I play PUBG mobile for 2-3 hours max setting, watch YouTube for a few hours and have no issues with battery life. Guess it all comes down to the apps we use. Either way there is no hard evidence Samsung sends out updates to cripple our phones so I guess I will ignore those claims to personal use issues.
Thanks for clearing that up.

Why I switched from Samsung to Nexus

My first android device was Samsung Galaxy Ace. Which was quite nice until I got to know that it won’t receive upgrades past Gingerbread. So, I bought a Galaxy SII. SII was an amazing phone. A great bump in performance and screen size for me after Galaxy Ace. Also SII had the sweet Ice Cream Sandwich. It also got updated to Jelly Bean (4.1.2). Then I made the switch to Galaxy SIII. Which at the time of my purchase still had the same software 4.1.2. Now, it didn’t feel like a huge upgrade in terms of how my phone looked. Except a couple of add-ons the software was similar. Then a 4.2.2 was leaked around the same time when Google released 4.3 and I updated to it, hoping it would bring some fresh change but it wasn’t much. And it had bugs too. I waited for the bugs to be fixed but then Samsung announced that they are skipping 4.2.2 for SIII and will directly update it to 4.3. I was kind of sad but it was good to know that it was getting updated to 4.3. Though when the actual update came out, this was around the time Google announced KitKat, it was again filled with bugs. Now, that wasn’t a leak that was the official update from Samsung and then they stopped the update temporarily to fix the bugs. They released one more 4.3 update after addressing those bugs from previous one but this one had more. And those never got addressed. Then Samsung announced that the international version of SIII, the one I had, will not receive upgrade to Android 4.4 as 1 GB RAM is not enough to run Samsung customizations smoothly. But the versions with 2GB RAM will receive the updates. Some people appreciated Samsung for actually working on to release an upgrade for a device that was out of the conventional upgrade period. But those people need to evaluate the facts that SIII was the company’s most successful phone. Also when you see the timeline of when the updates were released you realise that every update was released almost around 6 months of announcement from Google.
After being fed up with their update system I made the switch to Nexus 5. Even though I haven’t received any major updates, the vanilla android experience itself has been pretty great. And when I compared it to a GS5 running 4.4, I was even more happy. The time to time lag on S5 when switching between apps or the app opening speed or the lag when opening the recent app menu, they all just make me a little bit happier that I am not a Samsung customer anymore.
I just switched from the Samsung S4 to the N% a few weeks ago.
Even though the screen sizes are the "Same" the N5 has a little less usable space because of the soft keys. The S4 has keys below the screen.
No big deal for me though.
The N5 test slower on AnTuTu and Quadrant than the S4, however the N5 is a ton faster than the S4 on everything that I do, for screen scrooling, to app launching, to web sites loading, everything.
The N5 simply leaves the S4 in the dust.
I'm very impressed so far, and happy about the switch.
I still have the S4 as a backup if needed.

Benchmarks don't come into play. they sure as hell don't prove the speed and performance we get on nexus.
about those soft-keys. this what I recently did.

samsung devices come with custom dalvik/bionic by default, the nexus does not. becuse it includes a custom dalvik/bionic it scores better. thats why many rooted nexus 5 users flash different dalviks/bionics. the sgs4 can not beat a nexus running custom dalvik/bionic as well.

The S4 does score better than a non-rooted N5.

HOWEVER, in real world use my N5 runs circles around my S4.

Ironic because you made a useless comment.
On topic: Yeah, I switched from an S3 and was extremely happy. I used to really enjoy touch wiz because of a couple of features but the sluggishness of the phone was getting on my nervous. I flashed a stable built of CM, which wasn't great because that had some pretty serious bugs which annoyed me also. Then the N5 came out and I decided to buy and I am very happy with the experience.
I like nexus 5 but I'm dying to go back to Samsung but i know if i get the galaxy s5 I'll be dying to get back my nexus 5

My fiance and I also just ditched Verizon and switched to n5's from s4's. Couldn't be happier. I love Verizon's network but they are overpriced and lock everything down. We are in stl so T-Mobile works just as well.

Nice post, I think it sums up a lot of users' feelings too. I've never owned a Samsung phone - I started with nexus and have only used nexus since and i couldn't be happier. Between getting major updates first and the rich development community, you have very little limitations with these phones. I just hope that if Google kills the nexus line like they're rumored to, that they still deliver the same experience with future GPE devices (currently, GPE devices are not on par with the nexus line in my opinion).

Speaking as a former Galaxy S3 T-Mobile owner, I had to stay that Knox software and bootloader locking is what finally made me give up on the Galaxy series. The Nexus 5 on my opinion is a developer phone and a guideline of what other companies should follow. I'd rather not pay to own hardware that doesn't let me use it in the way I want. Plus no matter how you looked at it TouchWiz was insanely slow because of all the extra features, some of which most people would never use.

I appreciate your positive feedback for this device but there is no necessity for a user review of a device which is almost 6 months old. Thread closed

Skip N6 and wait for the Note 4 to get a GPE rom

So with so much bad press on the nexus 6, its looking more and more like ifs worth waiting for the Note 4 to get a GPE style rom and ditch all that sammy junk and have a way better phone than a nexus 6 for slightly less cash in the longrun ?
The nexus 6 reports :
Letters falling out the back
Average battery life
Screen burn in
Average camera
Bad avalibility worldwide
Units with flaking paint
Units with bad software
Lollipop just being buggy
Turbo chatging being as efficent as turning your phone off to charge
I mean really is mitorola just trolling us with the nexus 6 ???

Letters falling out the back-- thats happened to how many people? maybe 10-20? thats not an issue.
Average battery life-- ive seen a minimal of 6 hours screen on time since i got the n6.
Screen burn in-- it can happen to any device, particularly amoled screens. this early is very uncommon. btw, note 4, amoled screen as well.
Average camera-- its much better than an average smartphone user knows.
Bad avalibility worldwide-- ok, with this ill agree. but its still a very new device as well.
Units with flaking paint-- i havent seen nor read of any real complaints.
Units with bad software-- att units only, the ones with a locked sim.
Lollipop just being buggy-- everything starts off buggy, then it get fixed with time.
Turbo chatging being as efficent as turning your phone off to charge-- not true. my n6 was taking in 2400mV at 60% battery. ive never ever seen so much going into a phone. my nexus 5 takes in 1200mV, max. you also have to remember, the battery is much bigger, so itll take more time filling it as well.

Are you retarted! GPE devices weren't built with stock Android in mind. Stock Android doesn't fully utilize the unsupported and proprietary hardware found on GPE devices. A proper Nexus ALWAYS gets Android updates first and yeah, only the N6's that were desecrated by AT&T are having bugs. True Nexus aficionados know better than to get violated/crippled Nexus devices from the wireless carriers.

Even AOSP isn't the full Google experience that Google intends for mobile devices. There exists some Google proprietary software that only the Nexus devices get.

Nah im not retarded im just not willkng fork out almost 600 pounds on a **** phone, there are better options about that you can go and buy andndont have a small list if faults qith them and google new buggy OS on them.
Id get a note 4 after dome seirous consideration but i dobt want physicsl keys or any samsung **** software ill never use.
Phones are turning out like video games these days, and you cany patch hardware issues so im reluctant to get such an expensive device with a good chance thay it will look like **** in a months time.
And if the nexus 6 is as slow as my N5 is with 5.0 currently ill definalty wait for 5.1 and re worked nexus 6 hardwear
Lol gtfo haha
Note 4 is not getting GPE ROM. With any luck, the S5 will.
What the Note will get is a buggy AOSP ROM with incomplete camera and sensor support.
My at&t has been flawless from day one. The few things they did were easily remedied. I've literally had none of the issues you listed off. It's like flipping out over iPhone Bendgate when like 2 people reported it. When things are manufactured in mass, not every single piece is going to be perfect or get caught before they go out. Regardless of what you paid for it.
Sometimes you got to take a step back from the forums and just see for yourself. We are very small but vocal group.
I got caught up in the reviews and reading the threads and was almost turned off by the Nexus.
But after buying it I'm not looking back. I'm pretty dang satisfied.
My screen has no burn in. No letters falling off the back, or flaking paint, or battery acid leaking out or whatever else folks come up with.
My battery life is pretty average. And there are a few kinks that need to be worked out but I'm sure that's expected with a brand new phone running new software.
I love the Note 4. Test drove it for a few days and was very impressed. But I hate touchwiz. And can't play that game waiting for development.
The people reporting these issues are definitely the extremely vocal minority.

Further, go read Note4 boards and there's issues. There is no perfect phone.
If you want to look for things to complain about re: a phone - any phone - you will find them. I'm extremely happy with my N6 and I suspect many others feel the same way.
Perhaps the OP would be better off with an iPhone.

Pure 4.4.4 KitKat for T-Mobile Note 4

Hey guys is there anybody out there that's working or could work on Google's pure 4.4.4 version of KitKat for our note 4? There are a lot of rooted apps & games that are not supported in 5.0 lollipop & I also want to enjoy my 3GB of ram without installing a custom Samsung based rom that takes up almost 2 gigs of it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks
Yeah I always wondered why there wasn't a ROM of this sort. I'd use it.

FWIW, I pulled the trigger on the Nexus 6, because of the resale value, and pure lollipop. I thought it would be educational and tide me over til fall when the note 5 falls. I was back and forth between the Nexus, and Sony's Z3, but the glass back was a killer. After getting the Nexus last Friday, I played with the shipped 5.0.0, but my LTE was for s***, so I took the update to 5.0.1....same story. Unlocked and rooted, flashed a great 5.0.2 ROM, but still crazy reception. it would drop to no service on LTE, go to 4 bars 4G, 5bars 3G, 3 bars H. Needless to say I was more than disappointed. Sending it back in the morning, and coming back to the Note. Did not see ANY big deal with Lollipop at all, and it boots so slow! Then I read that on both the Nexus 6, and the Z3, They have not activated band 12 on either, and MAY in quarter 2 or 3. so that explains the radio issues. Anyway, I will be back on FireKat V9 come Tuesday, when my new Note arrives. That's my story......

The nexus 6 lacks an sd card slot unfortunately that is a deal breaker for me.
Poor op, his thread became about lollipop and nexus when he was simply asking about pure kitkat lol
@iRashawn229 I will suggest you perhaps hit up slayer and see what happens. afterall he did make it compatible the lollipop tree, perhaps wont require much. i build for my self on spare time if i have time again will see if I can get lucky and get a boot lol

It beyond me why they would make a phone without an SD card slot. Wtf.
BAD ASS NOTE 4 & GEAR S
Honestly, i wouldnt mind a CM11 rom. I really loved the stock 4.4.4 that came the with Nexus 5, smooth and bare.
But another point is, development doesnt go backwards (usually, anyway).
I would love it, but it wont be done .

Galaxy note 4 likely to get Nougat

According to an article on gmsarena.com the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is likely to get Nougat.
The article mentions that "Note 4 in general is likely to get Nougat, but not before the Galaxy S7s and Note 5"
This makes a lot of sense since the failure of the Note 7.
Let's keep our fingers crossed.
Hopefully 2nd Quarter of next year.
Here's a link to the article

Too good to be true?
looking back on all note series and updates before note 4, I can say that nougat will never be available for it
Please small baby Jesus, make this be sure.
It would be a nice investment of the resources that were working on the Note 7 nougat update, and a good appeasement of Note fans, so it probably won't happen
No way the Note 4 will get Nougat, it's Samsung FFS! It would be smart and make sense for them to do it which means they won't lol.
In all seriousness though, if the only reason they are making such a comment that the Note 4 would likely get Nougat just because the T-Mo Note 4's just now got the Nov.1, 2016 security patch is a joke because in Canada we got this security patch back at the end of November which just means nothing more than T-Mo was slow as hell to release this security patch. I fail to see how this small update could make anyone think Nougat will "likely" arrive for our Note 4's.
Every other article that has mentioned the Nougat update states that 2014 flagships will not get 7.0 and I am more likely to believe those reports over this one article that bases it on T-Mo's late release of the Nov.1 security patch lol. I would love to see Nougat on my Note 4, especially after giving up the Note 7 due to Samsung's incompetence but it will never happen (not officially anyway).
Currently samsung wants their customers to purchase new phones, so that they can revover their losses caused by the note 7 fiasco.
Now, if samsung updates the note 4 to nougat, why would note 4 users consider purchasing a new device.
Therefore, even if we were to get nougat update before the note 7 started malfunctioning, it is impossible now.
They want to recover their economy.
Anyways, if the past updates of note lineup are considered, it still says that note 4 wont get a 3rd major software upgrade.
Failing of note wont make any difference, definitely not a positive one.
Therefore, simply dont expect something which is not possible and stop criticising samsung.

After the disaster of the Note 7. I can understand why Samsung may want to release Nougat for the Note 4. Seeing as the Note 5 is only available in the US and Asia but not Europe. Which leaves their European Note fans without a Note worthy flagship device. It would be a good idea to release Nougat for the Note 4 to restore a bit of user confidence in their company as a way of apologizing for the disaster that was the Note 7. Not that the Note 7 was a bad device, it was just poorly designed.

Note 5 is also available in South America. Here in Brazil for instance. But it's rare to see them, people prefer S7 or note 4 still. Or even S6..

Thats interesting.... But then again the Samsung's Galaxy Note series of devices were never very popular in the West as they are in Asia.
I m from Serbia(Europe), and here Note4 is last from note series so it will be okay if thay update to Nougate, but if not I going to root and flash with last rom....
I can't see why the Note 4 wouldn't get it.
The Note 4 has all the hardware it needs to run Nougat with excellent performance. Even although it's been a few years since its release, it is still a high-end device.
Besides, Samsung needs to recover some of the confidence everyone lost on it after the Note 7 fiasco.

Today I just heard about note 8 that it is "about to be released" to recover losses.
So no, I don't have my hopes up.

Should I wait for the Mi Mix2 or buy the original?

I've always wanted the Mi Mix and now the prices are dropping I'm seriously considering getting one. One of the main advantages of MIUI is getting constant updates no matter the model so I'm not really concerned if it has Nougat or not. Of course the Mix2 would probably be the preferred improved device, but the price will be ridiculous for the first few months.
Any suggestions would be welcome.
P.S. I'm not a modder and it will remain stock and unrooted.
I might get one too. What's the best price right now?

They're on Ali Express for between $470-490 for the 4gb model but I want to use PayPal. Banggood seem to have the best price at $539 for the 6gb model (with PayPal).
I picked one up on Swappa recently so I wouldn't have to wait for shipping. For $500, I'm very happy. The Mix 2 almost certainly will be China only at launch and will be very expensive and take a long time to import to the US. If you're in a country where the Mix is sold directly, may be worth waiting.
If you want to use your phone completely stock id say this phone is not for you if in the USA. Imo this phone is near unusable in the USA if you intend on staying stock.

I am sorry to say that you won't be getting those updates so often or easily on the Mix, not the official global ones anyway. Global beta for the Mix is still on Marshmallow. If you will be using the China stable or beta then no problem.

Why is that? Everything I've read says it works fine for T-Mobile and AT&T LTE. I can't think of any other requirements that make the US so different. I've also used several phones without T-Mobile lte and 3G has been plenty fast.

The point is that I will be getting some updates for the lifetime of the phone unlike other companies. The Mix is also on the list to be updated to Nougat. Besides that many of the features in new Android versions are already on even the older versions of miui.

Sure. And some features are not there yet even on the MIUI nougat builds. But yeah, the Mix should still be getting updates for sure. Miui 9 should be available for it when it comes out or a bit later too.
And you can always root and go for one (or all) of the great custom roms out there too!!! :victory:
Anyway, only my opinion of course: impossible to know when Mix 2 will come out but as guys already said it will be very expensive for a while. And despite it probably being really awesome, the original Mix will still be a great great value for a long time. I think anyway.

That's my thinking too with the added bonus that it will still be very rare and standout from the rest.

Joking aside - i just bought mine on cect shop for 470€ with a mi band 2 and additional cables and protectors. atm it is in customs (shipped friday, today is sunday) and will get it tomorrow or tuesday..
it misses lte band 20 which is used in rural areas but I don't care. It's beefy enough to swap from my OP1 (since the OP5 is a mess, and you were not able to buy a 3t for ages thanks OP for all the fish...)

Real simple my friend, I activated the Project Fi account using my nexus 6, then moved the sim card to the Mi Mix, made sure all the APN settings matched and are correct and boom....... MAGIC.
I've done this with.....
Note 3, 4, 4 Edge
OnePlus 2, 3T
Huawei Mate 8, Mate 9 Pro
I have not encountered any issues or problems using Fi with a alternative device, beware you can only use T-Mobile which for me isn't a issue because it's the best service in my area, Sprint is terrible and US Cellular is non existent where I live.

I've got a nice old Nexus 5 I could borrow you no problem. I guess it's a bit too far but if you come up with a way I can help you from Spain I'd be glad to do it. I am serious.
I bought mine a few weeks ago and love it. All bar the camera which is distinctly average. I came from the Honor Note 8 and The Mix definitely edges it overall.
