Suggested path of modding? - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions and Answers

Hey XDA! I "need" a little guidance here in navigating the best way to go about getting what I'd like out of my Note 8...
First, a little background.
I bought a Sprint Note 9 (you may point and laugh now), but am returning it because Sprint can suck it, and so can their version of the Note 9. I have a moderate amount of experience bastardizing my mobile devices, but the last few batches of Samsung products have been especially difficult it seems. I even successfully rooted, twrpd, and custom romd my Moto Z2 Force on Sprint, so I'm not a complete noob...
So here's what I have.
Model: SMN950U1 (ZKAX)
Carrier: Unlocked (will be activating to Verizon)
Android Version: 7.1.1
Here's what I'd like, in order of importance:
Root (any, superSU or magisk , no real preference)
TWRP (preferably official, willing to do unofficial if necessary)
Xposed Framework
Custom ROM (meh, willing to live without).
So here's where the questions come in , but let me preface by saying I did some research. I understand the only root for pie is a safe strap currently. That being said, I don't necessarily need pie. I'm OK with staying on android 7 or 8.
What "path" should I take to get my root and twrp? (I can navigate the other two items listed above once the first two are taken care of... I think...)
Should I update to Oreo? Stay on nougat?
Should I activate on Verizon before modding, or after?
Basically I'm asking for a roadmap of steps on this particular device because... Well it's a pita.
Any pointers appreciated. Thank you in advance!

I don't think anyone replied because your device is not rootable. Maybe you should look into buying an international Note 8 and be sure it will work on Verizon.

By international, do you mean specifically an Exynos chip based note?
Honestly, I've been highly dissatisfied with Samsung's actions ever since the Note 4. I'm seriously considering just buying another Moto Z2 Force.

Should I root my note 4

I have a t-mobile note 4. I am thinking about rooting my phone but wanted to know the pros and cons. I know a while back it was worth it workout a question. However, now that we are in 2016 is it really worth it? I know about Knox but I never use it so it won't be an issue losing it.
I've had my Note4 for 2 years unrooted. I only disabled the T-Mobile bloat.
If I had it to do all over again, I'd get an international Note4. With the latest 6.0.1, I have no reason to root my phone.

If you don't use Knox now you will likely never use it.
I say use it as long as you can stock and when you get bored or the phone starts to slow down, either root and flash a new rom or perform a complete wipe/ factory reset and start back at day 1. The great thing is you can always look forward to having the option.
I bought used about 6 months after it came out. I rooted it before booting the first time as I've rooted every device since my droid x (roughly 10 devices). AdAway, titanium backup are necessary for me, especially AdAway. Xposed is nice for customizing as well. The 910T was made for rooting and playing around with. Easy to use and hard to screw up.
Yes. Be the administrator of the device you own. Free your device totally from the control of of companies who have no right to your information or battery usage.

[HELP][VERIZON] Best phone to buy for root and Xposed.

As title stated. V10 boot looped but it's being covered under warranty. Unfortunately, I fully expect it to come back with MM or N which as far as I know isn't xposable or downgrade-able to LP.
What is the newest phone that I could get from Verizon or Best buy(can't afford to pay retail will have to use financing) that I can root and put xposed on? I don't care about TWRP or custom roming. If I have to get TWRP to root that's fine but I'm okay without it. I'd also like to avoid the "What do you need root for" discussions. I need certain modules, that you can't do without root.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Affordable option is a Moto G4 Play XT1607 which can be obtained online or through major retailers like Best Buy. Don't purchase through Verizion as their branded variant (XT1609) can not be bootloader unlocked or rooted. Comes with Marshmallow (Android 6.x) which supports Xposed Framework. Should be able to find in the $100-120 range USD; refurbs typically hover around $100.

I appreciate the input. The Moto G4 has an old cpu(Snapdragon 410 processor). I would like something comparable to my v10(Qualcomm Snapdragon 808). It was made in Oct 2015 and is almost 2 years old. Surely there has to be a phone released around the same time or later that is xposable?

Moto pure as mentioned by another poster. Also consider if you really need that horsepower. I have several devices with the G4 occupying the lower end. Performance is most noticeable when installing/updating apps on initializing a new ROM. Beyond that responsiveness mirrors my high end devices for daily tasks. Obviously does not apply if you game, manipulate video or regularly perform other CPU/GPU intensive tasks.
BTW - really isn't the right thread for this kind of Q&A. Good luck finding a replacement.

Thanks. I think I've just got accustomed to the response time of using my v10. When I'm constantly switching between apps, viewing media, uploading files, and using media apps that require Just-in-time downloads to use(Instagram/Snapchat) I hate the stuttering/pausing when slower phones like my g2(currently using) has that wasn't there for the v10.
I've tried reddit with no luck. I've also tried the thread the other member suggested because he said as much as you did about this thread but no one answered there either. I figured this would be the best place to find people using xposed devices who are on VZW and could just drop by and say "Hey I'm using this phone with xposed." Mods are welcome to delete this thread if they feel it's clogging things up or doesn't belong.

Look at the x pure, I had one, has all the radios, bootloader unlocksble, magisk capable, currently doesn't have nougat = xposed (gravity box on stock rom is all you need), has the 808. It can be had for 200-260 on swappa. Doesn't have nfc however, camera is meh.
I really liked it when I had it. It's a good phone

No I'm with Virgin Mobile Canada. The Oneplus 3T support a lot of network. In fact, there is 3 different version of the 3T ; A3000, A3003 and A3010 (mine is A3000, the North America Version). Be sure to buy the right one for your country.

From what I read, and that site, it might work on verizon, if the area you are in happens to use the bands it uses. It only has one or two of the 4g bands of Verizon. So it could work were I'm at but not work if I happen to travel out of my city.

This is unfortunate my 3T is fully sopported by my carrier so I enjoy it, but I understand if it it only patially supported by your carrier, it might not be the best deal for you. Good luck finding your perfect marshmallow phone then
htc10 ftw (i have unlocked version, but i believe you can root the verizon version)
Maybe ZTE Axon 7. Although there seems to be some issues after upgrading to Nougat from Marshmallow.

To my knowledge a phone has to be approved by Verizon to work on their network as well. If all the bands aren't supported, they'll never let you use it. You could buy a Nexus 6p, it's approved and you could flash back to MM if you need it that badly.

Yup. I got my eye on Moto Pure right now. It's about 100 or more less than the 6p similar specs and just as modable.

Root on snapdragon

Am I understanding correct that as of yet, the snapdragon version of the note 8 cannot be rooted?
Also, if I am planning on rooting, should I NOT take the current ota update?

There may eventually be an engineer-kernel related root maybe 6 months down the road, but it will be super limited and slow.
Also, OTA won't affect root, since an engineer kernel can be flashed over anything (since its for developers to test hardware).
I have the Snapdragon variant as well here in Canada, and I'm selling the phone for full value and will be ordering the F model on Swiftronics when its available (as of now only the FD is up). I'm currently selling it on Kijiji, but if I don't sell it in 5 days, I'm going to drive to Mississuaga to refund it at the Samsung store, and then I'll pop by the Swiftronic retail store which is also conveniently in Mississuaga as well.
Lastly, as you are most likely aware, rooting any Samsung phone will void full warranty 99% of the time, and is NOT covered by any imported variant (anything outside your country regardless of the method of purchase). This includes Swiftronics retail outlet (just got off the phone with them).
So if you really want to keep your warranty, I would suggest waiting for the Snapdragon root, which will most likely keep the warranty and risk having to wait up to a year and have super limited abilities, or sell the phone, get the F variant and lose warranty completely and obtain 100% root access with full kernel/ROM support. I'm personally choosing this option, as I thought I could live without root, but the small things add up and make it impossible for me to live without lol.
Not so worried about warranty but will this phone never get a full and proper root like every other android phone I've owned?

You may want to track the history of rooting previous Samsung phones. The short answer is that an unlocked bootloader has been very difficult to achieve on Snapdragon SOCs. Without that, root is a hit or miss.
What are you trying to do that your stock phone can't?

Take a look at this thread for S8+, root took almost 5 1/2 months and it still has a locked bootloader.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...root-g955u-g955u1-snapdragon-sampwnd-t3658911
I didn't get a chance to mess root on the s8 but using the ENG kernel on the s7 edge to get root was horrible. wasn't really worth the trade off IMO. it slowed down the phone, lagged like crazy. even after messing with kernel settings to make it stable it still was slower then stock. I know how important root is to some people but anymore stock with some ADB mods is OK with me. I wish I had root to debloat my phone some on the stock TMO firmware(unlocked firmware loses to many features) but it is what it is for now.

I always liked finding a custom Rom that has cool icons and battery mods and choosing setting options that my room doesn't have. I just like full customization.
My friends worship me better when i have root, since we all have the same phone, and they see what i can do after root, i charge $50 for root and $75 to install rom, $150 w/root/rom/complete debloatation!

Every phone that I have owned that had a locked bootloader has gotten root. Every one of them. Now you might not be able to flash kernels. But I never do that anyway. So don't worry about it the Snapdragon will get root. Remember the phone just came out on the 15th. I guarantee someone is working on root as we speak.

I did too in the past but not on the S8+ or the Note 8. There is now Substratum for Samsung without root and SytemUI Tuner from the Play Store that you only need several adb commands to give it permissions where you can really make it yours. Also a thread on the S8+ site for layers and most of those work on the Note 8 too.

Right now I'm using Swift Dark for the S8, and I'm using the nav bar from here, Parapaer. Using the carrier hider from here. Got rid of the battery charging icon from here, with several adb commands for permissions. Haven't had a single issue but if you do just boot into safe mode and uninstall the offending layer.

Honestly I was looking at this question and it made me think because I've also rooted every single phone I've had for the past seven years this is the first Samsung device I bought I usually stuck to Motorola and the Nexus lineup and all of those phones I rooted them to do everything the Galaxy Note 8 does by default already customisation and performance
Up until yesterday the only real reason I had to root my Note 8 was to disable Bixby but Samsung did the right thing and gave me that already
Now I honestly don't even care about rooting

Considering T-Mobile upgrade - any hope for root?

I had a Samsung S4, rooted it, loved it. I upgrade to the S7e without checking, and no root. I upgraded to LG G7, thinking they couldn't possibly be this bad - no root.
So, any hope of the T-Mobile version having root? It's not a dealbreaker (the G7 has terrible cameras anyway) but knowing what the options are is nice.
I'm hoping that I can still get the $390 off when trading in my G7 despite getting two with the B1G1 a year ago... lol
Thanks!
Based upon past history, the T-Mobile SD855 version (or any American variant) is unlikely to get root, due to locked bootloader. I had a TMo S7 which got root via a leaked engineering kernel, but it was not satisfactory to me, nor many people. I got an international Exynos S7 which has full root, ROMs, etc. and is WAY better. The Exynos S10 is expected to get the full root treatment, but it hasn't yet. I'm holding off on buying a G970F S10e until root is established. Typically takes roughly a month, if I remember correctly, although this model appears it will be a bit trickier.
If you're counting on being able to root this phone, the best advice is probably get another phone. My Note4 took almost two years to see root and by the time it did, most developers had moved on. The Note7 had an engineering kernel "leaked" but that phone didn't last long. The Note8 was rooted for a short time but without an unlocked bootloader and an available recovery, flashing ROMs wasn't possible.
The enthusiast community is so small these days it doesn't pay to unlock the bootloaders. Samsung and others make far more money selling to corporations and government entities which value security.
Zero to None for the North American Snapdragon...

Seems like a nice phone, and a great value, though I am not a huge fan of no headphone jack. Also it's a side grade for me from my G7 (both are S845s). But looking at the forum, rooting sure looks easy. I'll keep it in mind, thanks.

Processing speed difference is infinitesimal in my opinion, and rooting will just get easier very soon. Razer just released full audio source and the devs are >< that close to cracking the encryption issue for fully working TWRP
Samsung doesn't care about the development community and their last good phone in my opinion was the S5

Exactly what the dude below you said and the should work well with Verizon and Sprint according to Chinese Note 9 (same bands as Chinese s10) users claiming they got everything working at least on Verizon.

Exynos and Verizon

Oh darn, I cracked my S8 screen, time for a new phone! I didn't have the Exynos S8, so I was never able to root this phone, and I miss it desperately. I'm probably going to buy an S10 or maybe S20, and it looks like there's still no Snapdragon root. My question is - is there any drawback to getting an Exynos version, and does it place nice with Verizon? Are all international versions Exynos? What search terms do I have to use to verify that I'm getting an Exynos version? Basically - is there any reason not to get an Exynos S10? Is there an Exynos version of all of the S10 phones (S10, S10+, S10 Ultra)?
I have been Rooting Samsung Galaxy's since the S6.
My friend owns several independent phone stores.
We have tried virtually every provider out there.
Prior to owning Samsung Galaxys I WAS an iphone owner. (My very last iphone was a 5.)
I always Jailbroke the iphones and the reason I stopped purchasing was the price...
So, what I have found out about buying and rooting Samsungs is this:
I don't believe you will get the performance of a U.S . phone when you purchase a EXYNOS.
My belief is due to the fact that you won't have the same bands available to you vs the American version. If you can live with less connectivity then go ahead and make your purchase.
Additionally, the whole process of Rooting a Samsung Exynos phone is complicated. You are not likely to Hard Brick the phone, but be prepared to spend time on XDA solving your problems.
Because of my background in Computer Systems Analysis, and due to the fact that I am patient and willing to ask the questions, plus read through an entire blog listing for the specific download, I have been successful...but to what end? When I think about the time spent, aggravation, etc., there is a diminishing loss ... currently running S10e EXYNOS Rooted with TWRP
Look for the SM-G970F SM-G973F SM-G975F versions which are EXYNOS
Thanks, although that's disappointing. I don't mind the technical stuff, I've rooted every phone prior to my s8, and I don't mind a challenge, I've softbricked plenty of phones, but haven't hard bricked one yet. I've done IT stuff my whole life, so if it's not actively on fire, it's still fixable, and I learn stuff in the process.
But from your reply and doing a lot of reading, it does seem like Exynos would be a significant performance hit. I'm really stubborn about things being open source and hardware being hackable, and my biggest reason for rooting is simply because I should be able to on principle, and I have daddy issues and don't like being told what to do, lol. I'll have to balance that with the performance/connectivity hit.
I'm assuming it's the same deal with the note line? Exynos is the only thing rootable and is significantly slower? Phooey. I've been using Samsung galaxies for the last 8 years or so, maybe I should look into the Pixel? I think that's the only other comparable Verizon phone?

Actually its not the same. I just switched to Note 10+ Exynos and the performance is extraordinary! I havent rooted it yet, but out of the box everything is fast, including uploads of pics. I went to the Plus because of the higher resolution & 12GB memory + MicroSD Capability.
