Screen goes black when calling or getting called - Nubia Red Magic 3 Questions & Answers

Hi.
I got this phone about 5 months ago, and i was not regularly using it to make phone calls... but unfortunately now i have to, since i smashed my main phone.
Anyway, it worked perfectly until last week.
Now, whenever i get called, or i'm trying to call someone, the display goes black. I cannot see who's calling and cannot answer the call, unless i drag the drop-menu (usually notifications are displayed there) from the top; and if i'm the one trying to call someone, the moment i press call the screen goes black and cannot use the phone until either the person answers and then hangs up, or i have to wait for that robot to finish it's speech ...
Games like CoD mobile and Lineage Revolution work fine, but i need to be able to use the phone now (
This morning i whipped the device clean, but it still does the same.
Please help.
Thank You.

I had the same problem turned out to be the glass screen protector I was using, if your using one take it off and try calling someone.

Do not buy the tempered glass screen protector from Nubia for the 3/3S. Customer service has admitted it interferes with proper operation of the proximity sensor.

Hello, thank you for your contact. After attaching the tempered film, it will have a slight impact on the proximity sensor of the mobile phone. It is recommended not to paste the tempered film.

Is there a way to disable the proximity sensor entirely?

maybe it's a little late but, I realized that by using a matte type mica the problem was solved

Do you have a screen protector or case that is covering the proximity sensor next to the earpiece? That could be it

I'm willing to bet its the default screen protector. It doesn't have a cutout and makes the proximity sensor go crazy. Your phone thinks its in your pocket which is why active notifications aren't coming on. I had a similar issue with my screen staying off during calls, and not being able to turn the screen back on because the phone thought my face was next to it. Take off the screen protector and I bet your issue goes away.

Yea, I'm willing to bet the sensor is freaking out. And two of you in this thread that have the problem also have the original screen protector on that blocks the sensor, so it seems most likely.

Yeah I still used the original screen protector that is coming out from the box so it still look like a brand new phone . well you know the reason I did that because too lazy to get a new screen protector but don't you think default screen protector that came right from the box is too thin that will make the sensor went crazy ? I mean that's only my thought from logical point of view .

The original screen protector was making my phone go nuts. As soon as i took it off, the issue went away. My issue was that when I was on a call, my face being next to the phone would trigger the screen to go black (as it should). But then when taken away, it would stay black, because the screen protector was messing with the sensor.

Well thank's pyro, even I haven't tried out yet but I will do that and thx for the heads up about the screen protector. you know funny thing, even lot's of people loves Nexus 5, Damn I'm more prefer nexus 5 since the battery is like a beast its like Toyota Prius .
I wish for the next gen of phone Motorola will make this feature as their patent and will be the only phone that will have this kind of feature and also for google nexus too.

[Q] Screen won't unlock during phone calls.

Anytime I make a phone call my phone locks. I know phones typically go black when it's at your ear, but when I pull away, it won't wake up/unlock. The only time it unlocks is at the end of the call. I set it up so that the power button will end my calls but that doesn't really fix my problem. If I have to use the dial pad during the call, I can't.
I read that the proximity sensor might be blocked by a phone case. I removed mine and it's still not working. Any idea what it can be?
Do you have a screen protector? If so, remove it and try again.
I am something similar happening, when I remove the phone from my ear after a call I cannot end the call because the phone is locked and I have to unlock it with a pattern before I can end the call or wait for the caller to hang up.
Interestingly I also have exactly the same issue as I had with the LG G3 as well, I take a photo and, if I do not have WiFi, the Nexus 6 turns off, it does it every single time - it's fine if I put it into airplane mode though. As this was the same thing that happened on my LG G3 and no one else is reporting this on Nexus 6, I am assuming it must be an app I am installing ?
Is that possible ?
Simon.
I have the same problem, it's really annoying. My phone won't wake when I take it away from my head and it doesn't respond to the power button until the other person hangs up.
Hopefully it'll be fixed with an update.

I just now am having this issue too. Here's another thread with same type of thing I posted in: http://androidforums.com/threads/black-screen-after-answer-call-on-nexus-4.671499/page-2
Long story short since I already related my post there, I haven't had this problem on lollipop 5.0.1, now after sideloading 5.1, I have this issue. Screen protector is on, but never was issue before. Now all the sudden it's an issue. I feel like it has to be a software issue. Guess i'll need to test few more times before taking off or cutting screen protector; will update with more news.
Same issue for me. Never had this issue before the update to 5.1. Wonder if I can go back. I have had the phone since early December.
A little testing. Holding the phone away from my face, the screen immediately blanks when a phone number is dialed. Tried rebooting - no help. May try a factory reset.
Very annoying!
Definitely is the screen protector screwing with the senors like everyone is saying and you guys are simply ignoring. I had the same issues off and on back on 5.0, 5.0.1 and on 5.1, but on 5.1 it was permanent. As soon as I took the protector off, everything worked as normal.
As a brief work around - you can go settings - accessibility - select power button ends call. Works for me till I decide what to do. I have a screen protector on and yep it's covering the prox sensors. Once removed it works as normal. Need to find a new protector that does not cover.
Rooted, stock, with screen protector.
Was working fine in 5.0.1 now in 5.1 I have two sensor issues
1) Ambient display does not work at all. When I pick up the device or when I receive a notification sitting on a table.
2) When I receive a call the phone goes completely black. The screen will not turn back on until the call ends.
I do not want to remove the screen protector until I know for sure that is what is causing this.

A2CKilla. Much thanks. I did read, but it was odd it went from 0% to 100% failure rate after the sw update. I work embedded sw and that is very uncommon for a sensor. I wanted to make sure since I just flashed this morning.
I cut down the protector and everything is good.

*****UPDATE*****
Well A2CKilla, we all just wanted to avoid the inevitable and hope it was a software issue we could just "fix" instead of being a $10, god forbid more, for a screen protector. Always try the more simpler things first than to destroy others first (which I accidentally did btw with my amazing tempered glass, now I must find one that doesn't block the sensor. In my professional opinion, if a sensor worked while having a protector over it on a previous android version, why in the actual F*** would it not work on the newer ones, UNLESS they increased/decreased sensitivity on the code somehow? Well that was my first line of thought anyway.
Also tl;dr PROBLEM WAS INDEED SOLVED BY TAKING OFF TEMPERED GLASS (that previously wasn't an issue at all) AND NOW ALL IS NORMAL.
ps. sensor is literally right next to the top speaker grill on the left side. Best to find a protector that doesn't block that.

I really wasn't trying to sound rude at all with what I said, but seriously, there's many a thread about this issue way before 5.1 even came out, and every single time the screen protector was brought up to be the issue, but everyone had to try to find 101 ways for it to not be that, granted my tempered glass protector was less than $5 and I've already found one with the proper cut out for again, less than $5 so I was fine with discarding it, but for so many people to really try and deny something that was the clearly the problem really was sad for a moment. Once again, not trying to sound rude at all but this wasn't the first rodeo about this issue

Wow I never had an issue on 5.0 or 5.0.1 with my tempered glass screen protector. After spending all day thinking it was a software bug and reverting back and trying multiple sources for stock images and ota for 5.1 I decided to remove the screen protector and it worked! Cant believe how 5.1 made the proximity sensor sooo sensitive.

This is not acceptable behavior for the device. Mine worked fine, 0 issues before update. Now ambient display is broken and in call the screen goes black. This should be a non issue. My other phone has the sensor covered with a glass protector and it's not a problem at all. This can be fixed, since it was working before. Taking off the protector is not an option for me since I don't have a replacement right now, and should only be a temporary fix at most.

so it's not acceptable for a device to not work properly with something it was never designed nor intended to have? and maybe you were a lucky one because there were many people having this issue and I also stated that it was an off and on issue for me until it was permanent after the 5.1 update. Also, that's another phone, not the nexus, every phone has different settings for their sensors. And technically speaking it is an option for you to take it off, are you forgetting that your screen is gorilla glass???, a type of glass they developed to be scratch resistant, outside of some dust here and there, I've notice no difference having taken mine off until the new one gets here

No, actually it does matter. If it is of lesser quality and it covers the proximity sensor, it will cause problems on 5.1.

It shouldn't matter but it's a well known fact that when people updated to 5.1 stock image it did something to the sensor. The people with tempered glass screen protectors had to remove it to resolve the issue. I don't use one and never had this issue my self, but I seen countless post with the issue.
it does work now
Yeah thanks a lot for helping me out fixing my phone. It work's absolutely fine without the tempered glass screen protector. Now i have ordered a normal screen protector as it is very essential for keeping the phone screen safe. Thanks agai. Thanks a lot

You just need to make sure the screen protector has the proximity sensor cut out. It happens with plastic screen protectors as well if they cover the sensors to the left of the top speaker.
Watch out for the Zagg protectors, it also caused some issues with Mom's N6

Spigen tempered covers the proximity sensor, does not work

no cut out for the proximity sensor.
blank screen during calls regardless if proximity.
the fit is pretty good though but I guess I will return it
There's no cut out, but the screen still turns off during calls like it should, so I don't see the problem.

Mine does this too...actually just posted in the Q/A section.
Phone will turn off before putting the phone to my face and not turn on after taking the phone away from my face. I am hoping that this will get better as the screen protector attaches better over the next day.

Are you sure this is because of the screen protector? Did you test it by chance before putting the tempered glass on?
I've seen other people reporting this, but they are saying its a bug in marshmallow and not the screen protectors. I will have my phone later today so I hope to test it myself.
Sent from my XT1060 using XDA Free mobile app
I just ordered the Spigen tempered glass myself, can we get others to confirm this is an issue of Android M and not the protector itself? My phone is arriving tomorrow.
Yes I am sure its because of the screen protector. Because it works fine before and after I took it off lol
Even if it is because of a bug... If you get it now, it won't work right. Until it gets fixed. That is all
This sounds a lot like the issue with HTC's M7 when the initial software of the device wouldn't work well with glass protectors. The on screen buttons were not sensitive enough to detect touch once the glass protector was applied. Then HTC fixed that through a software update.
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
I'm returning mine as well. Didn't have the issue every call I made (only made a couple of calls, very rarely actually call people anymore) but I don't want the proximity sensor or FFC being covered period even if it ends up being partially or fully a software issue. Looks like there are several tempered options, think I'll wait a few days and see what others are saying about the other brands.
Nothing wrong with your glass
Ok, so I am experiencing the same issue on a Nexus 5 running the latest update with no glass protector or anything. Phone goes dark when I put it to my ear and I have to manually hit the power button to turn on when I pull the phone away from my ear. Anywho I believe it is a bug and not your screen protector. I get my 5X today and I get my spigen tempered glass today as well. But if your proximity sensor is working with the glass on when you raise it to your ear then it should work when you drop it back down. Not working only when you pull the phone down seems like an issue with marshmallow. Proxy sensor seems to have a bug where its affecting waking up on a call from going dark. Test it out with the glass on your phone if you can cover up the proximity sensor and it effects the phone, then it still works.

Just tested this out with and without. It is the glass (now the glass is not sticking as well...oh well). The phone would turn off as soon as my finger goes over the sensor. would not turn on when i remove my finger. have to hit the power button twice to get the screen back on. speaker phone disables the sensor so no issues there.
Tempered Glass with Sensor Cutout I may try this one out next. I wrote to Spigen to see if they are going to resolve the issue.

I just tested the sensor without the glass protector as well. The sensor being blocked is the problem. On phone calls with the protector on, the screen wouldn't light back up for a number of seconds or until hitting the power button a couple of times. Without the protector on, the screen behaves as it should.
I'm thinking about returning mine and getting a refund and then buying the new version if they release one. Unless Spigen would just do an exchange.

That is good if the screen turns off when the phone is against your ear, and turns back on when you go to look at your phone to either end the call or look up a date or contact.

Pretty sure he means it turns off when the phone isn't close to the face. This means the lack of proximity sensor cut is blocking the sensor as if your face is close to it.

Pretty sure he means it turns off when the phone isn't close to the face. This means the lack of proximity sensor cut is blocking the sensor as if your face is close to it.

yes I know what he means, I have the screen protector and the 5x. I am having the same issue, the phone should operate as I described. It doesnt with the spigen screen protector.
Spigen SGP11775. Same issues as others. Sent it back. Will get something with cut outs.
I am also sending back my Spigen tempered glass screen protector, got the Pleson tempered glass in today and it's much nicer. Feels thinner and seems to have a better coating on it and the fit is perfect.

problem of the screen or screen protection of the notes 9

hello to all guys, I'm Italian forgive me the translation, I want to ask you kindly advice ... I have applied this new technology of liquid film, https://www.nanomass.com/en/technology after a week just take the phone in hand and with the thumb release the screen on some areas of the screen I feel like a light trac as you were disconnecting something, now I called the assistance of the film and they told me that surely will be the screen of the note 9 defective, because this product does not create any thickness, but on the site I see that it creates a thickness of 0.0004 m of nano particle actually not known anything that moves, and the trac feels right on the surface, the feeling is that when you press on a tempered glass when it does not adhere well on the screen, then if I see it again again you do not hear anything, then I'll see you again after some time you hear again, the touch works perfectly, here's the video of the problem, thank you very much

That seems to be normal! It has already been reported here on xda somewhere, also over at Samsung forums as well, user have reported same issues! Please note this is my theory I’m just guessing as the home button is pressure sensitive. it the same at where you pressing it don’t affect use does it ? If it really does your head in ? Get a glass screen protector problem solved…
thank you, in your opinion it is not a defect of the phone screen, but of the liquid (film) screen protector?
did you listen to the screen noise in the video?

IMO most people do not need a screen protector and if you do a full case type is best. Between static and smudging none (3) I tried stayed on more than a month! Just train yourself not to put keys in the same pocket/purse
