I haven't checked all posts so it may have been addressed already. But, my pictures were comming out super fuzzy. And the business card ocr wasn't working. I took the back cover off and cleaned the internal lens. still no luck, then I took back cover off and tried taking a picture. And it was WOW! clean like it should be. OCR also works awesome
problem is the glass/plastic on the removable back cover, I think its plastic. I am a true cell phone user and keep the phone in my pocket, without change or keys. but the plastic rubs the cotton pocket and scratches up.
I bought the phone $600 cash from ATT store. I called att and those son of a ****** sent me to htc for the 1 yr warranty, and htc said I could buy a new cover. But the defect is theirs, if you reasonably assume that a person carries a phone in their pocket.
They should've used glass.
Can someone please take back cover off and tell me if they notice extreme difference?, like I did.
ATT has it out for me since I am a gsm charter account.
Thanks,
damthrill

With back cover OFF:
I tried like hell, took several shots to make sure the camera was steady, positioned the same place, etc....
Hope this helps.
that is a big improvement. they said you can buy another cover. would that even fix the problem if it was the cover in the first place that cause the poor quality? i dont see how putting another cover on will fix it, unless the new cover is some kind of high quality glass or something.
After playing with it......
I wonder if it is actually the plastic or if it is the amount of light that is let into the camera lens?
If you look at the back you will see that there is just a small hole... I mean just enough for the camera lens to shoot a picture. Once the back cover is OFF, it has the opportunity to take alot of light into the photo.
Maybe drilling out the plastic will allow more light to come into the picture????
But you might never know because you will drill out the plastic, which might solve the problem. But you might also be letting in more light, which might solve the problem. With a "fix" like drilling out the plastic, you can't undo what you did to test the "other" theory.... is it LIGHT or is it the PLASTIC??? Hummm.........
Look at his two pics carefully. See the distinct difference between black shade, one is really black. Also, take a look at the color of the can text, its redder. Do you think you can try taking some pics of some girls in bikinis with and w/o cover. I am just trying to say that I think the camera actually takes good pics if cover is off. I know that it makes a big difference if the optical business card reader program can all of sudden extract lots more data time and time again with cover off,
But, no one should take cover off to take pics. I just want to use what they advertised.
I can't drill cover because it would turn it into a dust collector inside.
Good work, lets try to get some more pics for referencing.
a back cover with sliding mechanism for the lens should be clearly better...
I also made a pic with and without cover. Wow, the differance!
I checked this too.
It's unbelievabla ! I was wonder my old TyTN II did better pictures.
I think we have to claim this to HTC like the video driver problem.
What's your opinion ?

That's INCREDIBLE. HTC really dropped the ball on this one....ugh!!!!!
Wow. I just tried this and found that there was some dirt on the inside of the cover where the lens is. Cleaned that off and the difference is huge. I might even use my phone camera now.
That sucks. I guess we'll have to keep our covers clean.
I think the point is that clean covers or not, the cover sucks.. lol.
Someone should use this info in the htcwiki and those other petition sites.
I think next time I'll be a bit more carefull with who i buy an expensive device from, this video thing and now this camera thing (and the fact that my usb port is slightly bent, and my hard button face plate is slightly loose too) are things that should not be happening with such an expensive device.
no difference...
i've taken 2 photo's, with and without the cover, see no differences, i'd really look for another cover if i was you...
Here's an image I took with a cover. It looks pretty good to me.
Perhaps your covers are just really dirty/defective?
http://esotericbabble.com/journal/wp-photos/20080112-164310-1.jpg
i've got to say i did 3 images, 1 with cover on, straight out my pocket, 1 with cover off, 1 with cover back on, but cover removed cleaned outside and inside and also a good clean of the lense.
Once cleaned i could see no difference with the cover off or on, the one i did take with the cover on just out my pocket was very blurry, fuzzy, but when i opened the cover up, the cover and lense where full of dust etc...... i think you may have a defective cover....
i had also an issue with the bcr software. my settings were autofocus at half press of the button and then to take the pic full press.
at half press everything was sharp and when i pressed the button the af changed and the pic was not sharp.
i changed to take pic at half press, now everything works.
good luck

I have to say; i just changed mine to half press and i gotta say this has improved the the focus and quality a lot, thanks for that g-fall!
If you look closely at the plastic window thats on my cover, I see micro scratches, but how did they get their? from normal use, I have never scratched glass lenses. A key chain in the pocket with phone just one time can mess up the glass lens if it keeps tapping on a glass lens. The scratches appear becuase htc used cheap plastic, so is this a defect? They don't think so, I also told the warranty lady if I could talk to an engineer, she said no. Now this auto focus at half way idea, I will try. It is unacceptable to have these problems on a $600 device, esp. when they already gutted out the inside camera, like the kaiser has 2 cameras I think?
damthrill
I still love this phone passionately
also people there is a coating on the plastic cover on the removable back. You see how looks like it has a purpleish tint to it? the camera lens cover also has this coating. I think they should have only used this coating on the camera lens cover since this coating is made to filter light I believe they are filtering to much light out hence the pictures being so much brighter when the cover is removed. HowEver you are righ that the plastic cover is cheap and scratchs way to easy I have always carried mine in the case that came with it from HTC and mine is looking pretty poor these days
Thanks for the half-press tip! That made a big difference in the quality of my pictures. I always had trouble pressing it all the way after it focused.
I am starting this to basically find out how durable a Ace is. Now i want people to tell me when they got their Ace, how have they handled it, what hardware/external damages are there and what software damages are there. Now i will start with my Ace.
I bought it on the 1st of April (haha), and that means i have had it for nearly 1year and 3months. At first i took great care of it, i treated it as though it was made out of feathers, but that was just in the first 3months. in the last year i treated it how i wanted threw it around didnt take much care for it.
The physical issues that have come up is the sides of the Ace have lost their "chrome" effect and have a lot of scratches on them, the screen has a chip and crack and the screen itself is getting a bit faded.
Software wise, i have updated it a lot and flashed a lot of ROMs onto it but it seems to be working just as well when i bought it.

Quality
I've had mine for pretty close to a year now, and it's durable.
I don't throw mine around or anything, and I really don't know why anyone does, but I have dropped it on multiple different surfaces by accident.
The screen is basically in perfect shape, because of the Guerrilla Glass, I have even tried scratching it intentionally with a knife, keys and rough surfaces after I realized how tough it was, and it still doesn't have a mark.
Now, it does have a crack running from the bottom left corner across the settings touch button to the bottom of the screen, but not on the screen. This crack can be seen in most light, but you have to look closely to see it really, and it only happened because I was carrying a metal bottle full of water and I accidentally swung it back into the outside of my pocket and it hit the phone with the bottom edge which was quite sharp, and cracked it. It took a lot of force though.
The chrome band around the phone has some nicks and scratches and paint chips on it, but nothing too bad, and that is because I think it's just plastic coated in shiny paint.
All in all, I'd give the phone a 9/10 for durability, since I hate screen protectors and have never needed one for this phone.
6 months, "inner stuff": Bricked 4 times, that I had to send it to service center...
Outside: perfect
Had my ace for about a year now.
Try to look after it but obviously i have dropped it quite a few times.
Ace hasn't got any marks on it
Software wise, i've got CM7.1 (need to upgrade to 7.2) i haven't got any issues (touch wood) with it now.
Had mine for a year and a bit. I have the same case as OP.
I dropped mine 2 days after I got mine!

Hey! I have that same case too xD. I've had mine for almost a year now. Still brand new. No scratches whatsoever
My ace is pretty new,4 months actually and it doesnt have any imperfect,i have flashed many ROM's,kernels, wipe battery stats and it still on perfect state :B thanks god i never bricked it i just had a problem when i did a partition with CWM,basically i format my sd card accidentally ):
But i think in durability i give it a 9/10 !

I've had mine for a year now. I have the same cover as OP too. I hardly use the cover because the phone feels better without it but accidental drops have scuffed and chipped the outer edge. I have a tiny crack in the screen and since then I use screen protectors. They are tricky to put on but worth it IMHO. The battery isn't great on the ace as we all know and mine is getting worse so I keep a spare in case I go somewhere where I can't charge it. Inside it runs better and better the more I read xda!
I bought mine last year, somewhere around July, so almost exact a year. Everything is fine on the outside and I only used a silicone case for 2weeks, it's been naked ever since.
The only noticeable flaw that it has is the edges around the USB port, it's scratched, nothing major.
Hmm
My usb port not working. And i cannot boot the phone without charger. Weird. Maybe it is because my battery.

no problems with mine... changed roms many times, and never bricked... runing 4.0.4 beta9...
no scratch, but i bought a protection for it.
This is really good information coming through. This will help a lot to new guys who ask whether a ace is a good buy or not it will show them how durable it is software and hardware wise. Now if any of you have had your ace badly damaged and you have pics and the story behind please post them it will help us see the weaknesses in the ace.
ifixit undoubtedly has the best teardown guides, but when they said that the nexus 5 front panel is a "fused flustercluck" that really bugged me.
To be honest i think their style has changed from when they first started, now the teardown guides seem to make a few too many jokes and links to irrelevant stuff. I'm not a huge fan of this, but I'm holding that against them as everyone has their own style.
But saying that the N5 front panle is a fused flustercluck just bugged me when they are perfectly happy to try melting the glue on the ipads and ipod touches to get into them, but not try that on the nexus 5. They even specifically sell the "iOpener" (basically an overpriced microwave heatable beanbag thingy) for situations like this. Not trying is what annoyed me.
So I set out to try myself!
I bought a whole front panel assembly with screen.
Now i don't have one of their heated beanbags so i just stuck the whole thing in the oven at a low temperature. 40C pretty much did nothing (as expected) so then i set it at 70C and heated the whole thing until it was toasty (15 mins).
Using a suction cup on the glass did nothing, then i noticed that I could see the back of the screen through the slits which the rear cover clips onto. So i started pushing at it with a plastic spudger, (the ifixit one fits perfectly).
I saw that that glass was coming away from the case, and careful pushing gave me a big enough gap to slip a guitar pick in. pushing at the other slits and running the guitar pick around the screen came off relatively easily.
One thing about the gorilla glass 3, it was pretty flexible, i was seriously concerned that i was going to crack the glass! it seemed to flex more than the sgp glass protectors i used before.
The glue is only around the edge of the screen which made it easier, I was worried that the whole back of the screen would be glued as well, but its just a foam pad.
Popped the back off my nexus 5 and attached the ribbon cable for the now separated screen just to make sure its all working and it is!
So here we are, the front panel is not a "fused flustercluck" as ifixit says, but can be easily separated. Even easier if the screen is damaged so you don't need to worry about keeping the screen in one piece.
ifixit gave the nexus 5 a negative point on this:
The glass and LCD are fused to the display frame. Fixing broken glass will be either expensive or very difficult.
But in all honesty, since the difference for just the glass and screen and the whole front panel (including the screen) is so small, it makes no sense to take the hassle of replacing just the screen, and also since most failures are going to be physical damage resulting from dropping the bezel will likely be damaged too, and just makes more sense to replace the whole thing.
pics for you all to enjoy:

I am actually doing a custom mod on the nexus 5 which requires the screen and front assembly/bezel to be separate.
I managed to find the screen only without the front assembly/bezel but not just the assembly/bezel itself so I went this route of separating it myself.

All I can say is that it's quite an ambitious mod (for me anyway).
I will definitely let you guys know once I complete it, but it all depended on me being able to separate the screen from the bezel and that worked, so all lights are green!
I just need to source equipment and parts, but with the holidays coming up It likely won;t be until mid-late jan until I will finish this.
I picked up a T Mobile Note 5 today and noticed strange mark all the way up and down the right side of the display. It is only visible under direct sunlight or very strong lighting and most noticeable with white or light backgrounds. It looks like some sort of air gap or liquid between the glass and the display. I actually exchanged the phone and the new one had the same issue. Has anyone else noticed this?
I'm having the same issue. I posted my issue on Android Central and someone stated that this is a common issue with the S6 and Note 5.
I'm going to call Samsung support right now because T-Mobile stated "that's how it was designed" and that answer just doesn't work for me. Even if they are right.

Well I checked my phone in direct sunlight and I don't see the mark you're talking about. But I do notice that my screen / glass isn't clear... With the screen off and in the sun, looking at my screen at certain angles I can see horizontal marks on my whole screen. Does anyone else notice these marks?

I know exactly what you're talking about. Mine has the same thing. I was wondering if it might be the glass screen protector, but I wasn't about to remove it to find out. It doesn't really bother me, so I won't attempt to get it replaced unless it gets more pronounced.
I do not think I see the issue on my Verizon Note 5, however one thing I will say is this screen is amazingly bright, I can even use the camera outside in direct light and be able to see it perfectly.

I think you'd probably know if you did. It's really obvious on mine, but only in direct sunlight. In all other lighting conditions, it's completely undetectable. I'm going to try to get a picture.
I have it as well, and find it extremely annoying. This is also the 3rd unit I have had due to the bullsh#t pink hue on the other two. This one is being returned to the service center when I feel like making the drive, and I'm not leaving without a perfect display.
I have this issue as well not really that major It's only there in sunlight
Sent from my SM-N920T using Tapatalk
Anyone found that this problem has been solved with a RMA or is thus just part of the way the phone's are?
I have the same issue with my Note 5 I bought it recently and works perfectly.
The display quality is amazing in any light condition, also the content is very clealry seen in the sunlight, but on the right side of the screen under direct sunlight, especially when then brightness is at 100% an I use a white backgroud some spots are visible from the top of the screen to the bottom.
Are these some sort of Burn-ins?
As tech service noted itnis a common problem with S6 and Note 5, also it does mot affect content visibility, however when Samsung manufactures such premium phone they should avoid such manufacturing errors.
Amoled display technology hasn't fully matured yet

I see, this is chronic problem of Note 5.
Solution is: Do brightness as %99, 95, 70, 50 etc. in direct sunlight. Don't do it %100.
Check my problem too (similiar problem) : http://forum.xda-developers.com/note5/help/display-problem-note-5-t3206480
Had this issue on my first note 5. sent it out for repair and waited for 5 days and found out that the replacement note5 has pinkish hue at the bottom of the screen. can wait another 5 days with out the note 5. going to drive to the nearest samsung service center with is 45 mins tomorrow. let me see if i can get it right this time.
Slightly on topic my N5 has issues under low lighting as per pics. Going to send it back as it's rather annoying in the spot it's in. On low brightness the smear like line is visible when you take it off low brightness the screen is fine. Weird.

The phone never fell (it has absolutely no marks on the outer metal), I did not perform any special/unusual move with the phone in my pocket, and there was no other items in that pocket (I am used to carry all my phones that way for years).
But this time I just found the mobile like that when I took it out. Note that I am not using any kind of protection.
So I wonder if I just had extreme bad luck or if more devices may have a fragility on their back glass ?
Maybe there was some keys or coins in you pocket and sitting with jeans make some pressure on phones

No as I wrote above there was nothing else in my pocket. I am used to live and travel with all my phones like that for a dozen years, and I never put anything else in the same pocket to avoid damaging the screen. It worked fine until now...
I wonder if it accidentally got hit or something, I know you said no but it looks like that section near the usbc port is took a hit of some sort.
I had my oneplus back crack, only a few weeks old, never dropped etc but I chalked it up to it must have inadvertently got hit somehow/someway without be knowing as I didn't find others with the same issue.

The cracks in the glass seem to start from the bottom indeed, but I can assure you that the metal all around the usbc is totally clean (there is a small white reflection there on the picture which may be seen as a damage, but it's not).
I cannot exclude that I missed a "hit" on my pocket during the hour which elapsed since the previous phone usage, but it would still be extremely weak for a gorilla glass 5 to break with a "hit" that I wouldn't have felt or noticed :/

Just looking around, can order a new back glass for $10 and it looks simple to replace. That's good at least.

Replacement back here
It's 3D glass. NEVER leave it unprotected.
2.5D glass on iPhones are much weaker as well (like the front of the Mi 9 which is very close).
3D glass or Edge-Glass (think Samsung Galaxy S7/8/9/10) is also amongst the worst.
No one should go without, AT LEAST, the included case, just because the camera glass isn't sapphire-crystal (9H) but sapphire-glass (5.5H) - like JerryRigEverything test has shown.

I had a Galaxy S7 before the Mi 9, two years in my pocket exactly the same way with no protections, never had a scratch on the screen or back
Same issue repeated with the rear glass on Mi9
My phone is in a robust case and the rear glass has been broken 3 times now! I have never broken any screen before and I have had phones for over 25 years.
Hi,
I just realize that I forgot to provide feedback here.
So I bought this back cover on Aliexpress : https://www.aliexpress.com/item/33009357325.html
An this heat gun : https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32966891985.html
I replaced the back cover myself and it was quite easy. Have a look at video like this one before : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ta_vYqOfK0Q
Since then, I am enjoying my Mi 9 and never had any problem with broken back or front glass anymore (although I still don't use any cover and hold the phone in my pocket...).
I think that the original back cover that I had was faulty, although Xiaomi never accepted that and refused to repair under warranty.
Good luck with yours !
Laurent
Thanks I will give it a try.
I have purchased all of the replacement screens do far from eBay..
Looks like bad luck. I don't use a case on my Mi 9 with no issues. The back is all scratched up, but no cracks.
