Hey, I currently have Xperia XZ1 Compact and I'm thinking of upgrading it since it does not get any official updates anymore. My mobile carrier offers Xperia 1 II for 899€ and Xperia 5 II + WH-1000XM3 for 899€.
I don't need headphones that much and I can always sell them I guess but what about the phones. Are there any significant differences between Xperia 1 II and Xperia 5 II and which one should I buy for that price?
1ii: bigger screen, 4K, 60Hz (MAYBE 120Hz with lower resolution in a future update but who knows), wireless charging, shorter battery life bc of bigger screen (but still good)
5ii, smaller screen, 120Hz screen, no wireless charging
Same processor, RAM; storage may be more on the 1ii, depending on configs, but expandable in all cases; the 5ii is always dual sim in europe afaik; cameras are the same, except the 1ii has a TOF sensor (which makes zero difference in practice, I'm told, which is why it was eliminated)
Significant difference:
US/UK/EU variants only get 128gb internal storage. Only the asian variant gets the 256gb for the 5 II. The 1 II has 256 for all variants (except Japan only, with 128gb). Also no ToF sensor, so that will make a difference with background blur.

Just some fun food for thought....
What attributes of what phones would make your perfect smart phone?
For me,
body dimensions, the height of a pixel 3, width of my old nexus 6p (dont like how modern smaller smartphones are more narrow)
5.5" screen & smaller bezels of the pixel 3
great front facing speakers of my old nexus 6p.
pixel 3s camera
specs & battery of the oneplus 6t
stock android
if I just described a phone that already exists, let me know lol
Give me a Sony Z Ultra with updated hardware.
Wait, isn't that what a Note 9 is ??
One Plus 6T is the best phone right now.
XIAOMI Mi 8 ?
Galaxy S10 maybe?

Its good value for the price but its far from perfect since Xiaomi cuts corners on hardware. The amoled display on the Mi8 is subpar for instance, and theres comon display issues like color banding, poor led backlighting etc. And theres always the luck of the draw issue with Xiaomi with some people getting better hardware.
The perfect smartphone :
5.5" borderless
B20 & B28
NFC
Fingerprint under screen
Face ID with the same or more secure than iPhone
A little notch for the Face ID and face camera
Please chinese constructor, create this smartphone (Xiaomi Mi9 )
Stock Android Phones are perfect
6” 18:9 1440p Super AMOLED Display
No notch, holes or curves in display
Front facing speakers as loud or louder the the G7 or Razer Phone
Bezels not to big or smalls. My hands wrap around those kinds of phones and mess up things.
16MP Wide angle and standard lenses front and back with Google Camera Port
In display finger print reader
Near stock Android with extra features like AOD
32bit DAC with, oh a headphone jack
Type C fast charging and Wireless charging
SD Card slot
Snapdragon 855 or newer
A large enough battery to power it all for a reasonable amount of time
What else...
To me it sound like the V40 and Pixel 3 XL had a baby
In my case:
No notch. Even if it can be disabled, it's still annoying to have initially.
Nothing bigger than 6" for screen size. My pocket isn't ready for bigger.
Decent camera. I'm not asking wonders here, just decent night shots.
Good battery life. I expect it at least live out 9 hours with intensive use(YouTube, games, etc) on 4G.
At least good mid-range CPU.
NFC.
Front-facing fingerprint sensor, can be under screen.
Capacitive back and menu buttons. Most if not all new phones lack this. I could live with gestures, but this is about the perfect smartphone for me.
Not required, but nice to have: Able to survive most short drops(no more than 30cm) without any damage.
For me, the perfect phone is:
a display no larger than 4.7 inches, this is best in my hand
good camera around 12.0 Mpix
built-in memory min. 32 GB
iOS 7 or newer operating system
For me the best phone I've ever had is Iphone 6s, light and comfortable and most importantly indestructible
For me the perfect phone is,
5.5 inch display of samsung
speakers of razer phone 2
Camera of pixel 3
Battery capacity of POCO
flagship processor
Build of an iphone
price of xiaomi
6" Screen
1440p screen
5g connectivity
dual band GPS
wireless charging
triple camera array
No phone is perfect every brand lags somewhere.
I have lots of mobile/tablet due to my work on mobile development.
Still iPhone gave the best UE imo. Now I'm trying the Huawei Honor 10, the design it pretty great.
Much better than Pixel. I'm not sure the very high end mobile for now, iPhone still being my main mobile since all my information was saved on iCloud.
Moviphone with hd
Build of an iPhone
Display of samsung
Battery like Nokia(3310)
Performance like Oneplus
Pricing like Redmi.
Camera like Pixel.
5" or 5.3" borderless display (no notch)
amoled screen with decent ppi
good camera with zoom, must shoot perfect photos also at night
good battery
good gps, must sync in max 2-3 s
android stock pre-rooted and without crapware
some additional physical buttons (to use with pbmc). Volume buttons like in LG G2 would be nice.
no lags, all apps must start instantly
iPhone XS max.
oh, here we go....
7" 16:9 3D (glasses not needed, similar to what vizio made years ago and 3DS) 4k (8k if possible) dolby vision screen with bezels so a thick and heavy duty case can go on it...
high megapixel cameras (with led flashes) with good lenses that have sliding covers to cover the lenses when not in use...
Dual large and clean sounding speakers with dolby atmos
ufs 3.0 1TB storage
16GB Ram
855 plus processor
clean install of android with root support
10000mah battery
usb c 4.0
3.5mm jack
hdmi out
capable of passing 3D out the hdmi to a tv or projector
LTE bands 2, 4, 5, 12, 66, and 71
5G support
AX aka wifi 6 built in
I would be satisfied with all that

I see that you're in the UK. I'm returning my s20+ because it was an overheating discharging mess. Camera was horrible - oversharpened and neon like saturation. Of course it'd be different if I had the Snapdragon variant. I've pre-ordered the Sony

Yeah don't worry about the 12gb Vs 8gb. Using a LG g8s right now and the Snapdragon 855 handles Android like a boss (with 6gb ram). I'm sure the Sony will blow the exynos S20+ out of the water. Was so happy to get rid of that phone. I think more people need to be aware of what Samsung are up to and buy better phones than the junk Samsung are selling in Europe.
I also have the opportunity to choose from s20ultra or xperia 1 ii which showed up yesterday at my carrier store...
In my region we have the exynos... the xperia has sn 865 which is faster, but....im worried about the battery life 4000 vs 5000mah.

As it seems the xperia has some advantages, but, i love the bigger size of the screen from ultra and 120hz... vs 90hz xperia which is just a motion blur

Yes cannot deny that 120 hz or 96hz is better , but it also uses more battery

Wouldn't worry about that tbh - sent my Exynos S20+ back for the overheating/poor battery comments already made and went with a OP8 Pro with 8gb ram - no detrimental effect in my usage but the change to the SD has yielded far, far better battery life (about 2-3 hours more SOT on average) and far less hand warming!!

I'm afraid that we'll really miss this handwarming feature during the winter!!
I had the opportunity to the Op8 pro but I think the Xperia was better value for money here in the UK 799gbp + free top of the line Sony headphones included.

Im not hoping for it.?
I just know that sony this year is a bit better..:good:
I sold my fold 2 because the front screen aspect ratio was too narrow (didnt use the inside as much). I did like the phone width tho, and this and the xperia 5 are similar in size. I was wondering if the 21:9 aspect ratio was a little bit better for browsing/reading articles? i do like the xperia 5 mark ii's size better, but i read the 1 mark ii was the better of the phones.
I have the first galaxy fold and the sony 1 mk 2
i actually got it delivered today. its a nice aspect ratio. just trying to see what i need to do now (its a XQ-AT52 and i want to receive usa updates)
Any update? I also have a fold 2 and debating if I want to get the Xperia or not. I've been with Samsung since 2013 and this would be my first Sony phone
Hey guys, is there a legit online shop so I can buy the Snapdragon variant G9980 for example so it can work here in portugal with 5G?
You'll loose your warranty. Given the hardware issues this model is having that could get expensive sooner then latter...
&
The 5G may turn out to be more trouble than it's worth.
It's also running on Android 11 which is less than user friendly. Problems with the display. No SD card slot. No Spen.
A month agoI was looking at the N20U Snapdragon and the N10+ of which I already have one.
The 10+ has better color rendering, zero display issues than the 20U and the 21U but no variable refresh rate.
In the end I opted for a new 10+/Snapdragon running on Q for $800. It runs great... no regrets. My older 10+ is 2 years old, it looks and runs like new. One replacement battery on this heavily used device.
Current OS load is over 1.5 years old still fast and stable. In my opinion the 10+ was Samsung's last great flagship in terms of quality, usability and reliability... it's no accident that I own two.

Of the three SM-G9980 Variants the Hong Kong device is most likely to be compatible with 5G in Portugal. Some claim the Taiwan Variant (BRI) is identical to the Hong Kong Variant (TGY) but I don't believe that's the case. Stay away from the China Variant (CHC), it's lacking in a number of areas. Where you buy it will depend on how much internal storage you need and whether you want a new or used device. If you need a new 512GB model the best option are handful of Hong Kong Retailers. You will still have the warranty but the retailer in Hong Kong will need to process a claim. You can find them on eBay and they ship worldwide so your location isn't an issue.

I have the S10+ and an S21 Ultra. The S10+ is a nice option, it's smaller, lighter, has external memory and a 3.5 jack. Taken in total the S10+ is no match to the S21 Ultra, not even close. No hardware or display issues, it runs faster and smoother, much better cameras, better battery life and it charges much faster. You certainly like the S10+ better and that's fine but to suggest it's a better device than an S21 Ultra, sorry that's just not the case.
You'll lose warranty
Your software updates may not happen (was the case with UAE S9+ in UK at least)
5G = 180 Mbit / 25ms, 4G = 160 Mbit/35-40ms in my place. Given the fact 5G consumes far more energy I did switch it off. 160Mbit + 40ms is far above enough for everything I need. And +20Mbit does not compensate more consumption of battery. I do have bad experiences with Exynoses. Since Note3, they are really bad. The newest one is not far better. It is hot as hell, battery life is not as good as in Huawei. But ... new Snapdragon is also bad It does not worth to lose warranty protection for S21 Ultra and buying more expensive one from HK/US. Previous generation was different. Snapdragon was far better. Now processors are almost equal (except Snap is not that much hot). So - go for Exynos with warranty

on Wonda mobile. The G9980 in italy works perfectly
Hoping the zenfone 9 keeps more or less same form factor 5.9 inch and upto 16 gigs of ram but put in a bigger battery. Which prevented the 8 from being a great phone.
I would love to see a 6.2" screen with better screen to body ratio and just a little bigger body to accomodate a 5000mAh battery. Zf8 is so compact, that it can grow a milimeter or 2 in every direction.
I would love to see a Zenfone 9 mini with the dimensions of iPhone 13 mini, Cam with OIS, midrange soc, stereo speaker, Amoled.
I would settle even for the size of the iphone 8 / SE 2020.
... i would love to see a zenfone 9.
That's not so easy. If you aim for a bigger battery, they need to make the phone larger. People calling for a larger battery are missing the point that you actually want to improve durability, not size of the battery. It can also be solved with more efficient SoCs, or more efficient software. This is the only way we can keep the small form factor. Also note that smaller phones need less battery due to smaller display, so the mAh are not comparable between compact and regular sized phone.
16 GB for Zenfone 8 is already available, just costs a few extra dollars.

The battery would actually be better if the SoC wasn't so inneficient at idle/low loads. Hopefully the wait for the Zenfone 9 is because Asus is waiting for Qualcomm to release the rumoured TSMC-built 8Gen1 which should be much better than the Samsung-made chips like the current 8Gen1 or 888

Seems like Asus is about to release another proper compact phone.
I like that they ditched the under display fp sensor.
I've already decided to buy one, after the release.
