Is Mi 8 still worth buying at the end of 2020? - Xiaomi Mi 8 Questions & Answers

This is mostly about the popularity of the phone and the support of the community.
Do you expect that there will still be custom roms for Mi 8 in 2-3 years?
I really like this phone and I can buy it in excellent condition for 180-200 euros.
But if there's not enough support from the community it's useless.
Cheers!

I bought a used one couple weeks ago in perfect condition (couldnt find even a small scratch on the back) and less than a year old for 130 euros. So 180-200 euros are way too much
If the condition of the battery is ok, then you will definitely have a great experience with the phone. Great screen, great performance and great camera

At that price it's definitely a no brainier but I don't have anything remotely cheap on offer.

Still suggest buy other phone cause of mi8 battery capacity really small

If you comes from phone can holds from morning until your bed time/night without charging, this phone isn't for you.
The downside of this phone is the battery, other than that, if you wouldn't mind charging 2 times a day. I recommend you this phone.

Maybe I'm not typical - but at the moment, I can get three days between charges. Even when I'm away to the office, I could get 2 days.

yeah it depends on your usage and battery condition, my phone is 2 y.o and battery condition is about 60% holding max charge about 2096 mAh, my usage is social media and messaging app, data and wifi always connected. average total standby from 100 - 20% is 12-14 Hrs, with SoT 3-4Hrs. (can be worse if you using data only) So I should charge it 1 times more to last for one day. I don't complain much about the battery because my previous device has a small battery too.

I still have more than 3 hours of OST on my S4 which is 6 years old (with original battery), so that's a really bad result.
Do you have any other suggestions of a 845/855 with OIS camera setup?
The only thing that comes to mind in the price range of 200 euros is Mi Mix 3 (if you can find it for that money in good condition).
Newer generations - Mi9/pro or mi 9t pro are more expensive but only have EIS

go for it. I bought my mi8 in oct 2018 (so 2 yo now) and still hit 6h of sot (xiaomi.eu rom, on Paranoid android even better). I only use the QC in emergency, always used a normal 1.5a charger and my battery is just fine. snapdragon 845 is strong, we don't need to launch a nasa rocket lol

I think its a great phone, I have it for about a half a year now, had samsung s9 plus (exynos) before. I have offical Lineage on Mi8 and it works great. I miss two things on this phone (wireless charging and 90hz display). I think battery life is much better than samsung s9 plus. Speed of the phone is completely sufficient, I have like 100+ apps on it and works completly fine, and camera is superb. I have google camera installed on it and it makes great photos - in theory it has almost google pixel picture quality (it has the same sensor as the new Pixel5). I think its like the most complete good phone experience for 200€, if you are prepared to put in a bit of work (lineage, gcam), and I have high hopes for support because there are some projects supporting android 11, hopefully we will se lineage 18 on Mi8.

hmmm didn't sure what's wrong, but it's used anyway, the previous user is a heavy mobile gamer, so no wonder the battery health is only ~60%. I really want to replace the battery, but my local Xiaomi Service Center wouldn't accept my phone because it's not sold officially in my country. want to replace with nohon battery (which is recommended by another user here), but nohon can't ship their product to my country.

[Q] Insane number of problems with this phone?

I'm on my third replacement and here are just some of the problems I've had.
1. Horrible vibrate motor that sounds like a broken RC toy car.
2. Battery life is TERRIBLE. Screenshot below. And I've tried going a week without installing anything and keeping location and sync off. Same thing. The screenshot below is the phone doing nothing at all for around 8.5 hrs with around 10 minutes of use (just checking news sites).

3. It looses signal a lot where no other phone has. I miss calls, texts, and pretty much everything else that needs a cell signal.
I live in an area that's supposed to get 3-4 bars. See the first screenshot and compare it to the second one. The phone was in the same spot within about a foot.
4. Driving mode never works when it needs to.
5. Purple tint on low brightness.
6. Camera is useless past 5PM
7. Terrible speakerphone (cant hear anyone during calls). The top speaker is pretty good though.
8. Apps take twice as long as other phones to open (I can deal with this, but it's just an annoyance that I would rather not have)
Does anyone have any ideas as to what I should do? I know I can get another replacement, but motorola's support is horrible.

Well it's actually a nice phone outside of these problems. I guess I should probably just return it, but I was wondering if anyone else had experience with the battery drain and the no signal problem.
Losing less than 2 percent an hour on a phone is actually pretty good life. It really is. Only way to beat that would be airplane mode and turning off active notification and touch less control.
Sorry your not happy tho. Everyone has different expectations from their phones. I don't think it matters what phone you get.... There are gonna be things you aren't happy with. Guaranteed.
Two weeks in so far and I love my X... Wouldn't trade it for any phone out there today. Except maybe the Droid Maxx. But it's crazy expensive.

What phones have you used? I came from an htc one and note 3. Both used less than 1% an hour on standby. My Nexus 7 goes for 24hours without losing even 1%. No, I don't expect that for a phone, but I do expect a phone with a larger battery than the HTC one to get better battery life.
I think the reason for the poor battery is the poor signal. As you can see it says 84% of time with no signal. Its a phone, so I expect it to get signal where every other phone gets signal. I have a tmo moto x by the way.

Based on the screenshot you provided, it looks like you're running into the Google Play Services battery drain that's been troubling a lot of people for about a month now. It's up to Google to fix that one, but I wouldn't count on it I've also noticed the the US variants (The ones built in Texas) are assembled pretty poorly; I have little bits of particulate matter below my front camera lens, and the front glass doesn't line up perfectly with the sensors and camera. If signal is a problem, I would suggest another replacement.

It's not Google Play Services. I had that in the beginning, but I disabled location completely and it took care of that.
Signal has been a problem for all 3, so I don't think another one is going to help. There is another guy on here who has the same problem.

I would tend to agree with you on that thread, it might be a defect in the T-Mobile variant. The dev edition works on Tmo, but that probably isn't an option. Sorry I can't be of more help :silly:

My X loses 2-3% in 8 hours overnight. Even with sync on. All I do is turn my wifi off. If my phone lost 2% an hour in standby it would drive me crazy.

Well your bad signal is definitely going to impact your battery life, but have you checked betterbatterystats or wakelock detector for wakelocks?
And out of curiosity, what phone are you comparing it to when you say it takes twice as long to open apps? It's noticeably faster than both my HTC One and GS4 were, and my Nexus 5 is only marginally faster. You really gotta do a side by side to tell.
I don't think signal strength impacts battery severely. A bit I'm sure... But not enough to blame horribly bad battery life on. I'm 24 hours here... Almost 3 hours screen time and have 30 percent left. All in very low signal coverage and wifi mostly always on.

The thing is I don't have bad signal with any other phone. Every other phone gives me full bars. And I'm comparing it to the htc one and note 3. Twice as long only from a cold start or when I clear the app out of memory. If its in memory, its the same for all the phones.
I really wouldn't mind all the problems if it wasn't for the bad signal on all of the phones. Ive even paid for a new sim card to see if that was the problem.

Wow. I don't know why three of mine have gotten worse signal. I did haven the N4 and it didn't have great signal, but it never went to no signal. This one is around 80% with no signal.

Cunning Samsung, the real reason why Note 4 battery is only 20 mah larger.

As we all know, the battery is the Note 4 is virtually the same as the one used in Note 3, it's only 20 mah larger in capacity. So why didn't samsung just stay at 3200 mah?
The real reason I found out after many nights of careful analysis is that Samsung does not want use to use Note 3 battery on the Note 4, therefore it would promote their battery sales, which makes up a substantial portion of their income. Samsung engineers obvious is not capable of figuring out how to make a improvement on the battery capacity despite note 4 is so much heavy than the Note 3. So the other goal achieved is to save face, so that they would not get criticism from the public for not improve on the battery capacity, despite there is virtually no piratical benefit makes the phone 19% heavier.
Like if you agree.
I see the shape of the battery has changed significantly.

Note 4:
The Note 4 battery is much skinnier and longer. It is possible that this is just a side effect of having a new internal layout in the phone - the Galaxy Alpha also has a very skinny and long battery.
I actually prefer this design since they no longer have to use the crappy SIM and SD card 2-in-one slot, instead they have the SIM and SD card as a separate slot.
What a strange shape for a phone battery.
The weight is not symmetric.
The shape already change, means even without extra 20mAh, you also can't use Note 3 battery on it.

Yeah, why is Samsung constantly change the back layout? Even generation has different slot places and battery shape and the way you take off your back cover.
One reason the battery shape is different is to allow the SD and SIM cards to be swapped out without removing the battery.
A lot of phones don't have a removable battery... having one is better despite the changes.
Yes, it's true every year samsung makes a new battery size. It's normal. Every year, I sell my previous note with batteries included, and re-buy the new ones. But I would rather that anyways, I sell them for a decent price, use a coupon code every year to get them for $25 a piece, and the newer batteries have a higher capacity since they haven't worn out.
Plus, I get little upgrades, like last year samsung released the battery+charger holder combo for the same $25!
I understand it can be a little annoying, but you wouldn't want a year or two year old battery in your phone when new ones are so cheap anyways.
Also, S5 was the first Samsung to get this long "style" battery. And I hope it looks like the one in that picture, I'm so used to the black, but that shiny silver would be cool. I don't remember seeing that in any unbox videos tho, maybe that's the note edge?
When will XDA get rid off these ridiculous signatures?
Anyway, every year I have to sell or throw away many batteries, what a waste. The batteries are so expensive and bad for the environment.
This is one of the more idiotic posts I've seen in a while. The internal layout of phones constantly change based on developing technology. The addition of the fingerprint scanner and heartbeat sensor in the S5/Alpha/Note 4 along with the new UV and SpO2 sensors in the Note 4 all necessitate changes to internal layout. As SOCs change in power consumption and heat dissipation, there may have to be changes in cooling layouts. The new ISOCELL sensors and flashes may have different sizes. Also with the new metal frames, Samsung may have tweaked the position of the internal radios and GPS.
In fact the S5, Alpha, and Note 4 all share similar battery proportions (tall, narrow batteries) which are quite different from the S4 and Note 3. It's not a huge surprise as all the phones share similar SOCs and sensors.
They change the battery shape to accommodate the hardware changes. It's really nothing more. It would be impossible to use the Note 3 battery with the Note 4 internals and keep the phone shape.

Battery replacement - Battery from Sony Xperia Z2 into my Xperia Z

Hello xda Guys.
I am new and I have a question. Since I have updated my Xperia Z I have problems with my battery time. Before I have done update my battery was very slow too, but now it is horrible. I wanted to replace it four months ago, but I hadn't time. Now my question: Can I place the battery from the Z2 into my Xperia Z, or not?
Thanks Guys for your help
nope, from long distance its look like z2 battery is similar to z, but when you see them those are totally different batteries.
But you can buy bigger battery for z:
http://www.aliexpress.com/store/pro...3_74_75,201560_1&spm=2114.04020208.3.2.umgOBj
my friend have it, he said that its not HUGE difference, but he dont have problem with it at all, and compared to my phone, with new original battery its WAY better,(not as you would expected looking at size but still) especially in heavy games. after day of usage he still have 30-40 when I had to use power bank
Thanks alot for this Information
i live in bangladesh.. can i replace the battery own moblie...plz inform me
Be careful with cheap batteries from China. They tend to exaggerate a *lot*, and are often much worse than OEM batteries. At that price, it is far too good to be true. I can nearly guarantee it will be no better than stock, and possibly fail and overheat easily.
I bought a PolarCell battery from Germany, they are a known quality brand of aftermarket batteries. Rated at 2500mAh, slightly higher than the stock, and it was ~$25 - much more than any other brand, bit they are proven to be high quality. However, it performs identically to my original 2330mAh battery in terms of screen on time (goes flat well before end of the day with heavy use). Instead I got a battery bank case thing, that the phone clips into and it connects to the side dock. Also has a button on the back to turn on/off the battery bank charging mode. Works well, but blocks standard USB port.

Probably 95% of batteries are from China
Rest is maybe from Taiwan or India :]
And yes, you should watch out for some of them, but this one that I posted is actually good, and not only because my friend have it, but because most of reviews are positive about it(not only from aliexpress).
Its not give you huge boots, like you would expect from capacity of it, but its definitely is better(especially standby).
But Everything depend from user
I found out that most of people complaining, use phone a lot, or they have loots of background sync and apps running. And they expected HUGE boots or 12 years standby mode.
Im heavy user, sometimes I think that Im only person that use phone to work(rest people use it as for media consumption) and even if I recently put new original battery I still cant manage full day of usage, and Im a bit mad because I could buy this bigger one.
PS. I have case with wireless charging I wanted the same as CosmicDan but phone is WAY to big with it. I dont use it now(I actually hate phone cases) But its pretty cool and actually fast charging. but small movement and it stops so it was annoying as hell. I bought it mostly for night charging, but its turn out that Docking station is just better...

Yes of course most things are manufactured on China, but the old adage "you get what you pay for" shouldn't be forgotten. I'd personally never trust a $10 battery that claims to have 1000mAh higher than every other, $20 battery. Standby is not a problem, can last for days on standby with original battery. SoT with adaptive brightness and regular use is what matters - unless you yourself have this battery and can personally say it lasts more than a day with heavy use, and doesn't develop a memory effect after 6 months, then I guess it is good. But some people prefer to be safe than sorry. I used to repair phones as a technician and 90% of aftermarket batteries out there are complete garbage, that's all I'm saying.
Wireless charging? How does that work, the Z doesn't have wireless charging capability? And it's not that thick, only adds another 0.8mm to thickness. You get used to it after a while, and it has enough juice to fully charge the battery with a bit to spare.
EDIT: This is the one I'm using: http://www.dx.com/p/rechargeable-28...-case-for-sony-l36h-black-216633#.Vhj0vIkzHqA

Well, yeah, but many time I bought something from original shop, that is original new, and it was not cheap, and it had good opinion from forum users... and it was crap like hell.
Especially headphones. I'm crazy about headphone.. And those are not typical headphones for show off like most people use them today. I actually never use headphones in public(cant focus...).
And I bough many Sony headphones, Koss, JVC, AKG... aaaaand few times I bought Sennheiser because people say that they are good, and amazing etc etc... and those after Beats are really bad... even compared to JVC from HA series(best quality/price ratio)
So just because something is expensive it doesnt mean its better :]
And about wireless charging. you can buy something like that:

But instead of microUSB you have small pins that are on side of case that connect to phone, just like most of cases for XZ that have powerbank.
I cant make picture of it(im not in home) but later I'll try find email with ebay link to buy one.

That's fair enough. Many brands claim to be genuine but are fake, indeed. But if the one you shared is clearly stated as non-genuine and has good reviews, than fair enough - I'm sure it's OK.
Headphones are such a flooded market, I bought an $80 pair once and they had terrible low range response. My $20 Samsung pair were so much better.
That's a pretty cool wireless charging thing, never seen them before. But do you keep it always connected and just have it stuck to the back with tape? [emoji14] the plug could also be damaged, so I would not use it for those reasons. But that's just me, still a cool accessory.
But if they combined the case design (like the one I shared) with a wireless charging thing, so it would be much thinner + connect to side dock and keep USB free, that would be cool!
EDIT: Sorry, didn't see what you said below - so it *does* connect to the dock on the side, nice!
I am planning on a new phone this Christmas, myself, so I am probably done with gadgets for the Z myself. Either the Xperia C5 Ultra (I miss my old phablet, its pretty cheap and will get Android 6.0 update too) or the BlackBerry Priv. But I digress.

Ha-ha for sure, it is beautiful and I loved the Qwerty keyboard on my old Nokia E63. But I'm worried about the price, C5 Ultra us only $500 AU brand new (which is maybe $420 USD I think). It's a mid range device, I only want big screen so I can type better like I used to. But keyboard much better. Priv surely has flagship specs, but I'm expecting it to be over $1000 AU - not sure I can afford that! But we will see
So... Batteries? Off topic Lol.... [emoji14]

Battery difference between S8PLUS

Has there been any info on if the new chipset is more efficient than the S8 Plus for battery? With a larger screen and s-pen I don't want to end up scrambling to find a charger by the afternoon.
I'd love to know this too! This is really my only concern with this phone.

From the reports I have read the Note 8's SOC will be slightly less than that of the SGS8+. If you study the specs there is no way around this. Apart from the price the slightly smaller battery could be the Achilles tendon of this mobile. Only time will tell.
When one looks at the schematics of the Note 8 there is no way Samsung could have done better. Its the space the S-pen takes up that causes the slightly smaller battery.
Having written the above I have been fighting for either larger batteries or new battery technology for years on all these high end Uber flagship mobiles. To some degree they all peeve me as they come with all the bells and whistles then add software and suggest we use said software to downgrade the performance to that of a middle of the range phone or have an SOC time of a few hours? The whole situation from all brands is rather absurd?

I love the battery life on the S8+ so if the Note 8 comes close then I am a happy camper. Though I expect to lose half an hour at least.
My previous was an s8+, and the note is close, or event better:

6.5 hrs looks solid
How does it compare to S7 Edge?
I had S6+ and hated the battery on it. It was real bad.
Then I got S7 Edge and it can actually make it through work with about 20-30% battery left.
Not sure if anyone saw yet, but DJ Koh (Chief of Samsung Mobile) said in a statement in The Investor that the battery is smaller because of the new 10nm processor that is supposed to be 30% more power efficient...but who knows if that is the real case...we will have to wait and see.
Latest test of Note 8 battery life, news is good
I thought that the chipset in the Note 8 was the same as what was used in the S8+. With a smaller battery, how could it possibly have better battery life than the S8+?

Speculation is greater RAM and better optimised OS give the Note8 an advantage
More ram uses slightly more power on the hardware size but can save it on the software side if apps are suspended in memory rather than being restarted from scratch. At this point there are quite a few reviews, hands-on, etc that show about 4 hours or a little better screen on time. These are people with new phones doing a lot of fiddling so I'd expect that goes up slightly once the new phone fiddle factor is out of the picture. This is enough for me although I'd of been happier with more.

Then he goes on to show two more days both of which are 4 hours of actual use and then explains the 6 was with video looped to run down the battery...
Its absurd that the note series are 'power' devices yet they fit a smaller battery than the S8+!
Covering their arses or what?! This doesn't attract me, having Samsung skimp and play it uber safe for their own gratification. Other phones (including theirs) have larger capacities and are far cheaper. A bigger battery showing they have confidence in their products would not have been rocket science - and would have been what we, its 'power' users expect.
So what they made an error in the note 7 - the note 8 should have been the beast that it just isn't.

Thinking about getting the ZX1 Compact, just a few questions

Hello, my Nexus 5X has bootlooped for the second time and I'm on my second version. Sort of getting sick of this and looking for a new 4.5-5" screen phone. I was looking at the X Compact or XZ1 Compact. My biggest qualifier for what I want in a phone is something that is rootable where I can run Adblock to block ads. I don't really mind about anything else, I just don't want to see ads. I was wondering what the current status is on unlocking bootloader, rooting, and running rooted on the Sony XZ1 Compact? I appreciate any information, thank you.
Well, first of all, if u r really interested in an Xperia, u can can forget the easy life of modding of a Nexus. Not that is impossible but no near at levels of a Nexus, One Plus, Motorola or Pixels...
I'm sure sooner or later it will be possibile to Root without losing our Drm keys, but it will be a pain in the ass. At least compared at what u r used to with your Nexus.
And by the way, there are no-root ways for your ads problem...

Ah, I see. I was just reading about the DRM Keys problem. And right now there's no way to Root, Install F Droid, Install Adaway? I know development is probably in the early stage, since the phone is relatively new. Maybe I should check back in a few months
There's a beta release of LineageOS, and it has a DRM patch (so everything should be working). If you still want to stay stock, try DNS66. It's not as good as Adaway, but it's better than nothing...

Is the colour of the battery icon your top consideration before buying this phone ?
no, but since this phone cannot be properly rooted yet (TA backups and whole stuff) i want to know what are the available customization option
and i tend to stick as much as possible with a familial layout..
C;mon dont tell me you like the stock android battery more than sony one ... and you would not use it if it was available
so ... is this doable via stratum ? how about the quick settings dropdown ?

I use Substratum, yes, I'm pretty sure you can get a mod for your battery if you look, but it's not something I've even thought about.

Trying to decide between XC or XZ1C. I simply loved the battery life of my good old Z3 Compact

Not sure about the X compact, but I'm loving the battery on my XZ1 compact. Easily 7 hours SOT over a full day of use with no power saving options enabled. Probably more if I turned off location/used stamina mode. I had a oneplus 3t before that got half the battery life with the same usage. The XZ1 compact is more powerful with higher end features and will be supported longer by Sony, I'd recommend getting it over the older model if you can afford it.

Haven't compared XZ1C and XC but on my XZ1C I can quite comfortably hit 7.5-8.5h SoT on a full charge over a days worth of use or about 12-13 hours. That's a really heavy hitter day for me.
But due to habit of plugging my phone in every night and taking my usage patterns into mind, I haven't had many "two day cycles" since getting the XZ1C to say anything definitive but with 36-48h standby times you should be able to get to the 5h SoT mark or beyond..
As far as the XC vs XZ1C goes, I wouldn't even bother with the XC if the XZ1C is on sale or for a competetive price.
I bought mine for 399€ with VAT or, funnily enough, about 399$ without VAT. At original asking price of 599€, I wouldn't have even considered buying this.
Seeing that you're from Portugal, you should be seeing similar prices as Europe does in general, XC should be around 270-300€ while XZ1C around 360-400€.
I don't know your financial situation but in my opinion the 100 euros or so you save by buying the XC instead of XZ1C isn't worth it. XZ1C came straight with Oreo so Treble out of the box which means updates will be somewhat easier for Sony in the future.
I don't know if XC got Treble when it got Oreo but highly unlikely as even the XZ's didn't get it (yeah, I know, it's optional for devices updating to Oreo). And it started from Marshmallow. Will it get Android P? I'm not gonna hold my breath, it has already seen it's two major Android version updates which seems to be the standard. And at this point it is already 18 months into the usual 24 month support cycle we see with Android phones.
Another thing to keep in mind is that the XC has the SD650..
It's built on an aging 28nm HPm manufacturing process where as the SD835 in the XZ1C is built on a much newer 10nm manufacturing process which is more efficient.
Then there's the less obvious stuff: SD650 uses LPDDR3 while SD835 uses LPDDR4X. Guess what, LPDDR4X is much more efficient.
As well as eMMC vs UFS. UFS obviously has higher performance but with it comes better efficiency as well.
Just for reference, you can take a look at Futuremark's database, in particular the PCMark Work 2.0 numbers.

Take the battery life numbers with lots of salt as people run the benchmark at different screen brightnesses and so on. But comparing these two to each other isn't that bad all things considered but still, take them with at least a grain of salt.

WOOW!
That is a very nice answer! No arguments against such detailed answer. Thank you.
I have no financial issues, came from a galaxy S8 and was happy with it quality wise, but found that the device is too big for my hand.
I decided i'm buying the xZ1C (it's arround 650€ in Portugal), but i'm afraid if i'm going to be disappointed with the quality of the phone.
With my Z3C had problems with the speaker and the screen, and don't want that anymore.
I'm no Samsung fanboy, and for me, Samsung is like Apple, a trend hype, but with Samsung phones never had any hardware problem.
I'm not a heavy user, some social apps, half an hour of browsing and gaming.
And it seems that xZ1C will be the last compact phone i'll buy. xZ2C is larger and thicker.

No sense paying 650 EUR for XZ1C.
You can register in Amazon.de (most of amazon.de page can be selected in English or may be Spain has it's own amazon.is?) and buy for 369-420EUR (need to sort which seller will be delivering to Portugal. 420 EUR is amazon.de selling themselves and they normally deliver all over EU). That will add another 20-30 EUR max.
I am from z3 compact. The screen is much better on XZ1C (bought from amazon.de and delivered to Lithuania). I even would say close to Samsung Amoleds...
I will hi-jack this thread only to ask two things.
How is the overall performance of this device?
I am currently using an Axon 7 and loving it but I feel like the SOT and size isn't optimal for me overall.
I tend to listen to music around 2-4 hours a day and have data on so I can surf the web, which is usually 1-2 through the whole day and lastly I tend to play simple games via retroarch and Fate Grand Order.
So basically SoT for me is 3h at best or 2h. Battery life tends to dip very fast when I have a game ongoing or listen to music+data on.
