Chat not available on Pixel 5? - Google Pixel 5 Questions & Answers

Just got my pixel 5 and coming from a Pixel 2XL. I'm on google Fi. I'm using google messages as my default messaging app and when I go to settings and click on chat it says: "chat features unavailable for this device".
What gives? I tried clearing the storage and force stopping the carrier services app and also the messages app as suggested on the google help forums. Still nothing.
Any ideas?

I had chat features pretty much instantly (UK)

I'm not sure what happens with Fi but I had the same problem some months ago. Then one day it worked, no clue why. Let it go a couple of days see what happens. Leave all your services be, at some point it will sync up.

Working on my end on Fi

Had the exact same issue. Tried different SIMs, e-SIMs, factory reset, nothing worked. Fi support couldn't even explain it. Then last night just started working ?

That's the way it works. Crazy but true.

[Q] I get double voicemail notifications with hangouts on project fi

Hello,
After too much time searching, and being stonewalled by project fi support, I hope someone here can assist me.
I am on project fi. I religiously use hangouts for my SMS as it works on all my devices/computers.
However, frustratingly, on my N6 I get double voicemail notifications. I always get voicemail routed to my hangouts, and it also always pops up as a separate thing in the dialer/phone app.
Thus, every time I get a voicemail, its double.
I would prefer to just get the VM in hangouts, but I would settle for just having them in phone dialer if need be.
Project fi support is useless on this issue. I have also posted in the fi support forums to no avail.
Does anyone have an idea on this? I can't be the only one with this issue. And yes, I have looked through the fi settings from a computer web browser.
Thanks in advance for any help.
I'm not in the US and don't have Fi, but since nobody has answered yet...
It may not be Fi. Is it possible that the duplication is within your phone, with separate notifications coming from two different apps? The fact that it happens only on the N6 points to this explanation.
If you search for "android double notifications" you'll see a lot of advice, though they seem to be SMS-oriented, as my own problem was.
Sorry if this doesn't help your particular problem...
Edit: maybe this...?

I appreciate your feedback, but it is a Fi/hangouts issue that others also have on the google support forums. It has been acknowledged by Fi support to me as well, but they don't have a solution right now except to use messenger.
Thank you though.

To disable voicemail notification from dialer (and retain in hangouts), try this.
Open dialer - menu/settings --> Calls --> Voicemail. Disable "Visual Voicemail"

Doesn't seem to be an option on fi with google dialer
Oh, duh, yeah... Fi is the service provider using your GV account. Didn't think of that
Do you have an option to disable the notifications in hangouts instead?

I could, but then my 5 other devices that let me make calls and receive my text and VM in hangouts wouldn't receive them anymore. The notification removal actually deactivates it for ALL hangout accounts. The whole thing is crazy. Google pushes hangouts for Fi, yet somehow doesn't have a fix for this.
You'd only be disabling notifications in hangouts on your Nexus - the other devices will still have hangouts fully functional.
I don't have a Fi SIM so can't try it out, but diabling notifications should not impact your ability to use hangouts on other devices

Unfortunately it appears the 'messages' check box would mean that I would no longer get SMS/MMS notifications either.
I appreciate your help though, but that suggestion unfortunately is a no-go as well. I also started a thread on the Fi help forum as well, seems like alot of others are having this same issue.
Very odd that google hasn't anticipated this on a flagship device with their flagship messaging app on their service.

Have you made any progress on this issue? I'm getting the same problem on fi service with my 6P. I tried project fi chat support but they were useless. I might try fi phone to see if I can get it escalated. I don't understand how fi and the hangouts integration was released like this or why it isn't more of an issue whereby the support people at google even know about the problem.

No, nothing. I think you have been participating on the thread with me.

We need to push google or they won't fix it.
Unfortunately many moons later and still no fix. Google is aware of the problem. I wonder if the lack of a fix is somehow related to the forthcoming allo release and transfer of purpose of hangouts.

Issues with apps stopping

Has anyone else been having issues with apps stopping on their XZ1C? I've been having trouble with Google Photos and Google Connectivity Services stopping a lot. I've tried the cache clearing and data clearing tricks as well as uninstalling and reinstalling Connectivity Services, but I routinely get the notification pop-up telling me one or the other has stopped or keeps stopping.
Photos seems to be stopping most when I use the app and especially when I try to share a photo via text or email from Photos itself. I don't have an issue if I send a MMS from Messenger.
Google Connectivity Services seems to stop the most when I use the GPS and am on LTE. It does occasionally stop when on WiFi or if going between WiFi and LTE. I question the benefits of even having that app if it stops more than anything. Perhaps it's just an issue with Oreo? I never had issues with apps stopping with my Pixel, but that was running Nougat.
Thanks.
Instagram does crash to me very often. I think they didn't optimized the app very well for Android 8
Edit. War robots just crashed too
I see it time to time too

My Google Photos app started behaving the same way immediately after I shared an album by way of SMS.
I cleared the cache, but that did not work. I reinstalled the app and the crashing stopped, but it has crashed once more the following day, but only one time.
How do you uninstall a core app like Photos? When I tap and hold, it does not give me to ability to uninstall it.
J-san, to the best of my knowledge you can't uninstall it, however if you long press on the app icon, and select App Info, you should be able to disable it. This will uninstall any updates to the app that have occurred since the phone was new.
Thanks much! I'll give that a try.
Nice, I thought I was the only one.

Android Messages RCS not working

Hello,
Has anyone swapped to the Google Messages/Android Messages app over the stock Samsung messages app on the S10/S10+ and been able to get RCS working?
I came from a Pixel 3 XL and enjoy the Android Messages app over the Samsung app even with the OneUI overhaul, but I cannot get RCS/Chat working - it is not even visible in advanced settings. If I swap to the Samsung app it sends RCS messages no problem, swap back to Android messages it goes back to SMS/MMS only. I also installed Google Carrier services thinking maybe it needed that to trigger it but nothing, looks like the Carrier services app also does not get triggered to actually provision anything even with it installed.
Would love to hear if anyone has this working
Same issue here. I prefer Android messages since I get a lot of verification codes texted to me and Android messages has a quick copy code option. On TMobile. Rcs works fine on Samsung message app.

I am using T-Mobile and I have not yet had RCS support(waiting for it), but I want to ask, how did you install Google Messages app on your new Samsung phone? Did you transfer your info including apps using Samsung Switch app? If yes, some apps may not have transferred correctly, so I would uninstall them, then reinstall or just try clearing data of that app.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Google Messages a few times, still does not resolve, even installed Google Carrier Services to attempt to fix. Really odd if you cant use a different message client with the same tech.
beep boop
Right now its only supported on the stock Samsung messaging app.

"Messages" is a public app that Google has on the Play Store (just search for 'Messages' and make sure you get the one from Google LLC), and anyone with an Android phone can download it. It's a drop-in SMS/MMS replacement for OEM (or carrier) apps for SMS/MMS.... it also supports RCS, but not on every phone.

And it looks like it may stay that way for a while: For RCS to be shared between apps, the way SMS/MMS are, Google needs to build an API so that different apps could access the same data. It LOOKED like htye were going to do that, but then 9to5Google and others reported that the code was hidden and commented out in the Android Q preview, with comments suggesting that it wouldn't be available till Android R. Lord knows why it's taking Google this many hears to get down basic functionality on something as important as messaging... they've been pushing their RCS Universal Profile since 2016, so it seems ridiculous that it'll be 2020 (for Android R) before they release an API baked into Android for it.
Textra is still my favorite SMS app. I wish Messages and Samsung Messages would implement their quick reply features
It works for me sending messages to my parents who are on Sprint with me using the Google Messages app. I'm pretty sure they are using the default Samsung messages app but I'm not sure if that makes a difference.
Not exactly the same but worth a mention...Verzion S10- has Real Time Text (RTT) working..you enable this from the stock phone dialer screen, three dots at the top right for Settings > Real Time Text. You can set it to always on and you'll get the additional option to send an RTT type message call whenever you click a contact.

Question RCS not working verizon S21 ultra

So I used smart switch and copied my pixel 4 over to my s21 ultra everything worked fine rcs using the Google message app. Had to get a replacement s21 (wouldn't hold a signal) after transferring from old s21 to the new s21 rcs stopped working and now when I enable chat in Google message it hangs on verifying phone number and doesn't do anything in samsung messages. Anyone have this working on verizon?
That's the same issue I ran into. What worked for me was to uninstall the app. Switch your default back to the same sing app or Verizon Messaging app. I redownloading the Google messaging app and made it my default. I activated the chat features and let it do it's own thing. For me after about 5-6 hours the servers confirmed and I was able to use RCS functionality.
Also in Settings, wifi, more connections I be set up a private dns; the same one I was using on my pixel.... dns.google

Been going crazy for 3 days trying everything from here to next Sunday! I read what dude said about uninstalling and going back to Verizon messaging app as default and reinstall Google messages and then make it your default again and it worked right away without a hitch! Thanks so much was going ****ing crazy!

Question Google RCS paired with Samsung Messages

Hey all! Just wondering if anyone has figured out how to enable the Google RCS setup inside the Samsung Messages app for the snapdragon variants? I've used just the built-in activity launcher with nova to dissect the app a little and it's got quite a few built in options. Just curious if anyone was able to make it work in the US. So far I've only seen people from Europe get access.
Download https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rrivenllc.shieldx&hl=en&gl=US
Create an account
Enable device admin & knox
Go to app manager
look for IMS Settings
Open the mainactivity
Look for the RCS options there and enable it including its features.
Sorry I can't be specific with the instructions since I don't have my phone at the moment but just try it.

Hi sorry for the late reply.
From IMS Settings go to IMS Service Switch and enable RCS Switch and all the RCS sub section toggles at the bottom. And do that on both sim slots. You can switch by clicking the sim slot # at the upper right corner of the screen.
I've been struggling with RCS since I got the S21U, I can connect to both the Google messages app and the Samsung default app, but the RCS switches (main and sub-switches) on the IMS settings app won't stay turned on, as soon as I leave the page they turn to gray.
I've got all the multimedia telephony flags on and all are working fine, just the RCS flags won't stay up.

S21U Unlocked straight from Samsung.
RCS stuck in verifying.
I just turned it off.
I'll wait for Google to get its act together on this.
WhatsApp "just works".

I don't think you understood my problem, RCS in google messages says connected, except I don't really have chat features. I can connect to Samsung messages too, but it still won't use chat features.
My problem is with the RCS flag on the IMS settings page, it won't stay on, I turn it on, simply switch SIM card from 1 to 2 to 1 and it's gray again. Everything else on the IMS settings is turned on and working, just the RCS flags won't stay on.

Well, you shouldn't have to install Carrier Services on a Samsung device. They manage that themselves.
Yea in the US, i wasn't aware of that part about carrier services though, I know it was needed on my pixel so I assumed it was needed on this as well.
I have a US S21U unlocked from direct from Samsung. I'm using Google messages. Most of my friends use iPhones, so I don't normally have an opportunity to test RCS. But a friend recently got a T-Mobile S21U, he's not a technical person, so I expect he's using whatever message app the carrier models default to, not sure if that's Samsung or Google. RCS just works between me & him.
I cant force them to work, google app stuck on veryfing number, samsung messages keep saying registration failed. Nice,

I'm facing the same issue.
I had it working and then it stopped working.
Try the RCS de-register thing. Disable RCS and then wait a week or so and then try again.
You can also try to call your carrier. I'll try that later as well.

It was working for a short time but then it stopped.
May have been something I did.
