Google 1 Text Message Restore. - Google Pixel 5 Questions & Answers

So I just received my Pixel 5 and I attempted to restore my messages from my previous device, One Plus 7 Pro. From my OP7Pro, I did a backup to my Google 1 account. I waited until MMS was fully backed up and then I grabbed my Pixel 5 and did a restore of my MMS to the device. The good news, all my MMS messages restored beautifully. The bad news, none of my text messages restored. When I click on any of my recipients chat, I only see their MMS messages and placeholders with date/time for the text messages. I reached out to the Pixel support and they told me to give it 24 hours. Which makes absolutely no sense at all seeing as it should be pulling from the secured backup on my Google drive/one account. Any info would greatly be appreciated, otherwise I will factory reset, hook up the transfer usb and (hopefully) migrate over the text messages that one.

Thank you for this. I downloaded the app and used it. It brought over some texts but not all. I know it has to do with RCS! I ended up factory resetting my device and physically connecting both devices via the USB-C cable and my text messages came over that way. Just for good measure I also turned off RCS prior to doing the transfer.

I use SMS Backup Restore too. It's a solid app. This time I just used a USB-C cable to transfer from my Pixel 2 to the Pixel 5. It wen't quickly, worked perfectly.

[Q] SMS Backup tool that restores dates properly?

Anyone have the name of an app that does this correctly. Im using sms backup and restore but it does not restore the dates properly. And the messages are all out of order because of this.
Thanks
I am using the same and have the same problem
bump (10char)
"AppExctractor" can extract messages from previous clockwork mod recoveries.
The only flaw is that the backup has to have been made through ROM Manager.
SMS Backup+ has the same problem (basically, all messages are restored to the date and time that you restored them, not when they were sent or received). It never did on my old phone. I suspect that Motorola is doing something non-standard with the timestamp on messages.
Titanium Backup.

I had the same issue with SMS Backup and Backup to Gmail. I ended up switching to GoSMS and used its built in backup feature. The restore worked perfectly! All dates show correctly.

I use GoSMS myself and I can confirm that in the GoSMS app itself, the dates restore correctly. However, the stock messaging app does not restore correctly (it puts the date/time of transfer/restore as the timestamp of all messages restored) using the GoSMS restore function any more. I'm not quite sure if it's an update thing or a phone thing as I went from an X2 to a Bionic but I believe it was broken in an update to the app itself.
Handcent backup took too long for me. Since then, I have used My Backup Pro, which has done a fantastic job of restoring my 6700 messages with time stamp intact. Try giving it a shot.
EDIT: Just kidding. Sorry kiddos. Next time I reflash, I'll see if Handcent restore works.

this is correct, i tried 3 different backup/restore apps before i realized that the problem is with the stock SMS app, not the backup/restore app. Handcent and ChompSMS do display the correct time even when the stock app does not. same problem on my Droid X too.

Handcent doesn't display correct time and dates for me, I used sms backup to restore sms and call logs.
GoSMS is the best one when it comes to backing up and restoring the SMS.. I have 10,000+ Msgs and while it takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to restore it's well worth it..
Ritesh Sahu, dev of SMS B&R, recently released a new version that fixed his restore mismatch dates.
What's New
What's in this version:
v4.4:
Potential fix for the incorrect Date/Time problem after restore on some Motorola phones. Special thanks to Dominick Young for his endless testing. Also thanks to John L Galt for his help.
Fixed sorting of conversations on some phones.
Added yyyy-MM-dd_HH-mm-ss as file name format.
Added a label to display the last backup date.

It works for me so far (and yes that is me in the notes - although I wasn't able to test it nearly as much as Dominick)
Go SMS Pro is by far the best
I had a similar problem when restoring messages to my Droid X2. It looks like the stock text messaging app for Droid is looking for the date in a column named sort_index instead of the date column that all the other apps seem to look at. This also controls the sorting of the messages. When you're restoring messages sort_index gets set to the import date and time of when the message was restored which is what breaks the stock app. To fix the problem I used Root Explorer to download a copy of /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db. Then I used the command line version of SQLite to run queries to update the sort_index column to have the same value as the date column. The queries looked like this:
update pdu set sort_index = date * 1000
update sms set sort_index = date
update threads set sort_index = date
Then I put the file back in place, making sure permissions were correct and then rebooted the phone. Everything was back in the correct order at this point.

[Q] SMS's not restoring properly

Hi guys,
I am trying to restore my texts from my N5 to N6 and they restore fine but the timestamp for the received texts are all wrong, hence texts all over the place.
I have tried everything I know to fix this but nothing works, I have even tried to backup texts I received today and enabled the timezone options in the menu from the SMS Backup & Restore app but still does not work. It is reading today's received texts as yesterday. My sent texts are fine.
Anyone else had an issue like this?
Thanks

I would try the Go SMS app to backup and restore your texts. I did this a while back on a different phone, and recall the phone apply a "time fix" after restoring the messages to make sure the times were correct. You can install Go SMS on your N5, do a backup, put the backup file on google drive, Dropbox, etc. Install Go SMS on N6, download the backup file, and restore it in the Go SMS app. Once restored, proceed to use any messaging app you like, and uninstall Go SMS.
OK. Will try that on Monday as a friend is borrowing my N5 this weekend
Navigate to /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases where you'll find mmssms.db. Copy this over from your old phone to your new in in the same location and fix permissions so that both the owner and group have read/write permissions.
I've been using this method since Gingerbread and it's worked on every version of android since then.
You can also take telephony.db to transfer your call logs and blacklist.db for any blacklisted numbers.
Hope this helps.
You could always use titanium backup. Works for me

SMS and MMS issues with BLU Vivo XL on metroPCS

Hello,
I am using a BLU Vivo XL with metroPCS service and I am having a two MMS issues: 1) Every MMS is duplicated, and 2) MMS service is very unreliable over WiFi. Also, I have 1 sms issue where my messages from some contacts do not thread/aggreagate correctly. For example, I send a sms to ContactA and when they respond, it is in a new thread, I can then continue the conversation in that new thread.
I have updated my APN information to the t-mobile settings. I have had a "phone reset" by a metroPCS CSR over chat. Any ideas on how to rectify these issues?
Similar Problem
I have a similar problem on AT&T. I get duplicate group messages while using google messenger. It only happens with group messages and is fine with normal MMS. Sorry I was unable to help, but you are not alone.

I'm trying to use my BLU Vivo XL with Chomp Messenger (AT&T). It seems to work other than it won't play any notification sounds no matter which one I choose. It's not blinking the message led either.
I was having the same issue on T-Mobile, my solution was to go through each contact and make sure there were no spaces in any contact numbers. Example: 1 (123) 456-7890 would give me problems, but 1(123)456-7890 worked just fine.

Exactly the same with me on AT&T. Any time someone sends me an MMS, I get 2 pictures instead of just one. Crazy. I also get the issue where I send a SMS, and then when they reply, it starts a new thread instead of appearing in the one I just sent. Weird. Let me know if you figure this out.
I seem to have found the CAUSE of this problem, but I have yet to find a solution. I had the same problem as the OP when receiving MMS. Instead of getting one picture, I would always get 2. No matter who was sending to me. Also, as the OP stated, "messages from some contacts do not thread/aggreagate correctly. For example, I send a sms to ContactA and when they respond, it is in a new thread, I can then continue the conversation in that new thread."
I remembered that when I got this phone, I replaced the stock messaging app with Google Messenger (I thought the stock messenger was lacking). I had a hunch that the 2 messaging apps were somehow conflicting with each other. So I deleted google messenger and had my daughter send me a picture. Boom. Problem fixed. I received only one picture from her using the stock messenger app. So I re-installed the Google Messenger app from the play store and had her send me the same picture again. This time, I received TWO pictures. I have no idea how to fix this behavior as you cannot "disable" the stock messenger app. I probably could try a different messenger app other than Google Messenger, but that's the one that I like. Anyone have any ideas?
EDIT: I deleted Google Messenger and tried a different messenger just to test, and it worked as it should. So it must me some kind of incompatibility with Google Messenger, and I'm guessing other messenger apps.

Yup, there appears to be a non-stock messenger app problem. Both Google Messenger and Textra were resulting in duplicate MMS.
I saw this thread and thought I would jump on here real quick. My GF also has metro PCS and she keeps trying to swap the default messaging client out with say GO SMS pro. And whenever she gets a new text she doesnt get any audible notifications. And the LED doesnt light up so she has to manually check her phone all the time. Has anyone else experienced that? Have a fix?

Swipe down from the status bar, click the little icon on the right, select GO SMS pro, toggle the Set to important notice.
Phone type: Blu Life One X on Android 5.1 (whatever happened to Blu promises for a droid version update? Word of caution: Don't believe Blue marketing 'promises'. Nice phone, but don't buy it unless its the OS you are willing to live with until your next phone)
Ever since google began sending love notes about its texting app becoming obsolete and I began using a different texting app (forget which one), I started having problems with duplicate messages being received. Last night I installed Textra and thought the problem was finally gone. Today while looking at the same texts received during testing last night, I suddenly have duplicate texts from last night for some messages (they were single copies last night). Really bizarre. I have also noticed that with Textra, the double text replies seem to now be only with my group texts.
Reading various threads, I became suspicious that maybe something in the Google contact phone numbers has become corrupted. Sure enough, some of the group contact phone numbers could no longer be easily edited. I messed around with the suspect contact information until I could edit the phone number to its simplest form (from +1 (123) 345-7890 changed to 123-456-7890). Seems to be working now. Will need another day to see if the texting acts up once again.
Now to figure out what is corrupting my Google contact information...
it's the 6.0 marshmallow update ..my Blu Vivo was just fine until i updated my phone i suggest you factory reset your phone.

Best way to delete older SMS messages without deleting the whole conversation?

So I have a situation here... On my lovely Note 4, I was experiencing some problem with messaging. It'd gotten really slow, specifically when I'd attempt to reply to a text, half the time the keyboard would stutter and I'd have to retype most of the message. It got so infuriating that I ended up ordering the Note 7, which had no issues after I transfered all my things over via Smart Switch (so all 25,000 messages...).
Well, we all know what happened with the Note 7... I don't know if it's a memory difference, or the fact that the "Messages" app on the Note 7 was just that much better (loved the new keyboard too!) that it could handle all those messages without issues or what. But now that I've been forced to go back to my Note 4, the Messages app crashes if I go to one of the conversations that had a lot of texts.
That brings us to my question. What is the best way to delete messages that are already there? It has options to delete anything more that X amount of messages, but that doesn't help in conversation threads that are already there. What I have done to fix at least one conversation thread was to re-do the backup to my SD card of the messages, but only past 3 months instead of all, then delete the conversation thread, then restore via Smart Switch the messages again.
But I have a few other 'conversations' to do that to, and was wondering if there was a better method out there?
My phone is rooted, so there shouldn't be an issue there.
If you set the text limit, it should delete old texts afterwards. Like form 1000 to 200, but it takes time afterwards I believe.. It worked on all other previous galaxy phones that way that I've had since the nexus

How to delete the whole SMS database?

I have a big problem after I restored all my sms from my previous phone to my brand new OP3T.
The app that I have used is Superbackup and the restore was completed successfully.
But when I enter to the stock sms app I am only receiving a "Loading conversation" message and the worse part is that after that my whole phone hangs when I open apps like Google search, chrome etc
Is there any way to start fresh clean with my sms database, by removing all of the current sms saved?
Unleashed by ONEPLUS 3T rooted
Not sure if it will fix your problem, but in Titanium Backup it shows the SMS stored as "Messages (SMS & MMS)" and I've successfully backed up and restored this when migrating between ROMs on my 3T.
Not sure what the backup app you used is trying to do. Each phone manufacturer appears to store the SMS messages different, from what I've seen. My old HTC phone had them stored under a different name.
Very strange situation.
I cleared the Data from the messages app at the phone's settings and then everything was looking good, as it should have removed all sms.
Today I opened the messages app and all sms are there!
How is this possible??

Clearing data for your choice of SMS app will only temporary hide all messages until the app restores all SMSes from the system-wide database in /data/user_de/0/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/. You have to remove that database to really start from scratch.

Came here to post this exact location.
Should have been more clear, in Titanium, there are two different entries: "Messages" app and the "Messages (SMS & MMS)". I think the latter is the same as the database location given in the 2 above responses.
Is "Like" equal "Thanks"?
