It usually takes a few months after a new device is released before a compatible version is available. However you do not need it to gain root, install magisk, and a flash zip files.

Android 4.4 on rooted VZW device

Got the OTA for 4.4, how do I apply that to custom recovery? Or do I have to wait till it comes in a downloadable zip and flash it in custom recovery?

there is no way to maintain root and take the 4.4 currently unless you have a dev phone or unlockable bootloader
bummer, was thinking that if on rooted VZW Developer Edition you could OTA update then reboot into recovery and install Su again (with TWRP for instance).

if you have a dev edition then you can get root because you have an unlocked BL.

sorry for the ignorance, but do you happen to have the steps after unlocking the bootloader to install root? I have the dev edition and just upgraded to 4.4 and am interested in gaining root.

same way you did on the last update you did. you may have to wait a sec if the su and cwm hasn't been udpated to 4.4 but i think it has so you should be able to get root the exact same way you got rot when you took the 4.2.2 OTA

I have yet to perform any such activity.
With some googling, I am estimating the process to be something along the lines of:
unlock bootloader via motorola site
install cwm?
push su app to system
victory?
I have development background but have not kept up recently with process of these things.

[Q] Questions about root and OTA

Hello everyone, I'm new here, my nexus 6 is on stock 5.0.1 and waiting for update to 5.1, here are my concerns.
1. How can I root my phone without unlock boot loader or flash a twrp recovery( I Know if I got a twrp recovery, I can not get OTA).
2. If I need unlock boot loader in order to root, could this affect ota?
3. If I rooted my phone, can I get ota in the future?
Thanks.

Thanks. So this means if I want to root my phone, I will have to unlock boot loader. And is there anything I can do if I want to update through OTA after I rooted and unlocked my phone?

As long as you flash the stock recovery before an ota you'll be fine
Actually any system modification including root on Lollipop will prevent an OTA so in answer to question 3, no.
Basically need to flash stock system.img, recovery.img and stock boot (if you changed the kernel).
At least thats what I'm about to do.

Just install the latest TWRP via ODIN and then flash the latest SuperSU via TWRP.

By default, it would be systemless, but if you need System mode, you would need to use another zip found under SuperSU subforum.

No problem here, using EPJ2 (stock, debloated, root, xposed) everything working fine.
Which version of TWRP you are trying, and what is the ODIN version?

Forgot to update my post but I fixed it by allowing OEM unlock in the developer option.
For some reason I don't have the OEM check box in my developer options. I haven't been able to root my phone in months.

No it wont let me do any of this. These are the files I have. I tried to flash the TWRP and it hangs. Does I thought I had to use CF ROot to root the phone first? Have I forgotten how to root? http://imgur.com/a/FMfeC

I believe this option is only for T3 model not the regular T model.

Again if you regular T model, use the files related to your model.

Does the latest security patch update stay when you root?

I was wondering what sort of changes take place when you root the G5s Plus. I got several patch updates so far. Will the latest update stay once I root the device? I just want to root the device for now, not install any custom roms.
I received an OTA with an unlocked bootloader so I don't see any reason why you wouldn't with root. This only works with the stock recovery though, if you have TWRP installed I don't think it will work.

Rooting involves 3 steps. Unlock bootloader, install TWRP, and install Magisk patch. Just unlocked bootloader doesn't mean phone is rooted.

Unlikely that the OTA will install if you have TWRP and Magisk... I wonder if we can still use Flashfire to flash the OTA and keep recovery and root?

[Download] 9.0.7 Patched Boot Image for Magisk

This is just a simple patched boot.img so you can re-do magisk after the update to 9.0.7 if you don't care for bothering with TWRP.
Instructions are the same as the others:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot boot patched_boot-9.0.7.img
Open the Magisk Manager App and click install. When prompted, choose Direct Install.
Profit!
Download Link: Google Drive: https://drive.google.com/file/d/13RDdihjVwt1oXlaxasRXqu75_QlFJV2T/view?usp=sharing
If you Need Magisk Manager, you can grab it from here: https://github.com/topjohnwu/Magisk/releases/download/manager-v6.0.1/MagiskManager-v6.0.1.apk
Thanks! Works like a charm
Thank you sir. Got me back rooted after the local upgrade to 9.0.7 on my tmo variant

I'm completely unrooted and stock. Do I have to unlock bootloader to flash this to use Magisk?

Any confirmation for this working on the T-Mo variant? I am bootloader unlocked with TWRP and Magisk root already.

It works fine on the T-Mobile or International.
In almost every case things will work on both unless otherwise noted.
@Dameon87 is there any way you could possibly throw an OOS 9.0.7 stock kernel zip together if it's not too much to ask?
Thanks!
I'll stick with the TWRP method.. after this messed up my phone with no internet at all in wifi or modem I had to go hunt down stock boot image.

So you had the t-mob variant.
then you unlocked bootloader and flashed 9.0.6 giving you the international variant.
How did you upgrade to 9.0.7?? Surely not OTA right?

I have a question.. nothing to do with this thread. I tried making my own thread but the xda app won't let me.. however here is my question.. I just tried updating my greenify module for magisk and it said install fails.. reason is because my API is 28 and the max should be 27??? It also told me to downgrade to a different Android.... Anyone ever year such a thing?? And is there a fix for this???

You should address your issue on the greenify4magisk thread. The dev posted explaining the reason for the issue you encounter at the last page. I don't think greenify is needed for OnePlus 6T. 1+6T has a feature called Adaptive Battery which looks like it trying to do the same thing as greenify.
