Mic not working (only in speakerphone mode) - Google Pixel 5 Questions & Answers

Has anyone else has this problem? For some reason my mic isn't working unless I toggle on speakerphone. It doesn't seem to be kernel related since I flashed two different kernels. Anyone else have this problem?

Try cleaning out your mic hole. It's just to the inside of the right hand speaker on the bottom of your phone. Use a toothbrush to clean out debris.
I had something similar happen with my old HTC M8 a few years ago. It ended up being the Ghost Armor aplication I got. They sprayed some type of adhesive (<---?) or something similar to get the screen protector to stick. Whatever it was they sprayed got into my mic hole and plugged it up.

I'm having EXACT same issue. Tried to update all apps as recommended somewhere, even performed full reset. Tried mic test app and seems like if i switch between mic modes it works same as you described.
Problem still there, it seems like software bug unless there is something I don't know

X1 microphone malfunction - low volume, static

Hello.
Some time ago the microphone on my xperia went berserk. The people I was talking to couldn't hear me. As my warranty was void, I decided to try fixing the problems myself. After disassembling the phone according to instructions on the net, I found no weak contacts, everything seemed fine. I reassembled it and the problem persisted. I use the voice recoder in the notes app to test it, since I don't want to call people all the time.
As I've come to understand, and I'd like someone to confirm this, the mic unit is located on the PCB with the buttons around the optical joystick. Considering the little hole on the bottom of the front part, and a rubber channel going around that hole, which can be seen when disassembled.
Talking into the mic hole produces no audible sounds, but blowing strongly into it can be heard on the recording... Also, theres quite a lot of static on the recordings, which could indicate faulty contacts or something, but I've rechecked the wiring and everything seems fine. I don't really know what could be wrong with it. If anybody has any ideas, I'd be more than grateful.
The sound playback works flawlessly, so it's not a speaker issue.
Also does anybody know of/have a X1 service manual maybe?

Milestone Proximity sensor and Microphone not working

Ok so the digitizer on my milestone went bad about a month ago, i ordered one off ebay and installed it myself. unfortunately while doing so i ripped the flex ribbon that has the sensors attached to it. went on ebay again and ordered that part and installed it, didnt destroy anything this time.
put the phone back together and everything seemed to be working fine, then i got a call, the person on the other end couldnt hear me and the proximity sensor caused the screen to go blank even before i put the phone to my ear
if i put the phone on speaker phone the person hears me but its very low im told, inserting the headset works fine, person can hear me perfectly.
i tried doing a recording with the phones sound recorder and all i hear is a hissing type sound when i play it back, i also downloaded an app to test the proximity sensor and its showing a distance of zero and when i put my finger near and further away from it its still saying zero.
tried doing a battery pull..hard reset, reflashing the froyomod that i have install and nothing seems to work, could this be a defect with the flex ribbon i bought? would this ribbon affect the microphone?
any help would be appreciated
Thanks
I also damaged the flex ribbon while changing the digitizer... where did you get the ribbon? Anywhere in the EU?
got it off ebay..it was shipped from china
bump........
I have the same problem and it's the effect of the digitizer replacement. Light can get access to the sensor between the digitizer and the sensor. If you press the left upper side of the digitizer the proximity sensor is working again, very annoying during calls. I tried to put some spongy tape behind the sensor and the metal backing plate it's better but not perfect.

Luvkillin, have you been able to fix this abomination of a mobile phone? I had a malfunctioning digitiser and replaced it, after that the microphone stopped working so i thought that I had broken the microphone. Changed the audio pcb and turns out that its still not working. My prox sensor also doesn't work but with all the other problems this is just a nuisance.
I found that motorola couldn't be arsed specifying the second microphone that is on the logic board and some acting as noise cancelling. I installed a db meter app and picks approximately 25db except when the phone rings which goes to 65db. So if the noise cancelling module is disabled by software, the mic could work without changing the logic board.
Did you manage to fix it?

No i havent, its just sitting at home in a drawer
i also installed a db meter app and got a consistent 16-19db when the phone is not in use. i assumed that it was too much of a coincidence that everything was working before and as soon as i changed the cable and digitizer they stopped working. plus the digitizer and cable i bought was for the milestone a855 and i have a a853. when i checked they seemed to be the same but i guess not.
im planning to just buy a new digitizer and cable for my phone specifically and see how it goes.

I believe its the noise reduction microphone damaged at some point in the disassembly. Did you check the 3 gold pins on the right upper side of the logic board?

Yea i did. dont see any damage at all to the pins or the board
The same problem here. I've changed digitizer and my proximity sensor stopped working. So I thought that I broke it during the work. I've ordered new main flex with the sensor. It was much better but still not perfect. But microphone went down. I think the problem is microphone board or the flex cable that connects it to the mainboard. Did you manage to solve the problem? I've ordered new mic and new flex.

anyone knows how to disable to noise cancellation microphone?
Hi guys,
to refer to the proximity sensor issue, i'd like to point you on my old post over here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9810999&postcount=8
Please check for the rubber...
Concerning the microphone, this might be related to the electrical contacts of the mic.
Please make sure again that everthing is right in place.
Would not harm to check the flex cable connectors as well.
Regards,
scholbert

Hi to all,
I had problem with my proximity sensor, it didn't work at all. (I had cm7, cm6 and cm9 rom)
I installed stock rom and it works again. ))
Microphone problem
Hi all !, I'm having a similar issue after change the digitizer, I'm not having any issue with the proximity sensor ... but is not the case with my microphone, when I answered a call my voice is heard into the speaker and the other person didn't hear me .. somebody found a solution to this problem ? Thanks all !
Had simular problem after replacing digitazer. if i press hard on upper side of the screen, then for some time everything comes to normal. So i desided to heat it up using a hair dyer for about 10 minutes, than press as hard as i can and wait till cool down. now everything is fine.

[Q] Speaker mystery

Hello everyone. A few days ago I started having a problem with my cappy, and I can't put my finger on the cause.
My speaker stopped working. Partially. When I'm on the phone with someone, I can't hear anything from them. If I turn the loudspeaker on, I can hear them just fine. Phone rings and notifies me of smses but I can't hear anything else. I don't hear music or video playing on the phone or the alarm clock.
In short, Working: In-call loud speaker, sms and calls.
Not working: everything else - music, alarm clock, in-call sound.
In summery, I can't decide if it's a software or a hardware problem.
I'm running CM 10.1 M2 with devil 4.2.
I should also note that I disassembled my phone to try and apply the
"loosen the screw" fix on the speaker assembly with no luck, nothing changed.
I think both. Earpiece and speakers are different devices.
Hardware - earpiece, software - speakerphone alarms, music etc.
One simple idea: take a piece of something thin, like needle and clean 3.5mm port.
I had almost-same issue 1 year ago. just dust formed wool and began shorting contacts inside port.

Thank you for the reply. Let me get this straight, you suggest I clean the 3.5mm port even though earphones work fine? (I haven't mentioned this but with earphones, everything works properly).
earphones = headphones = ear plugs? no, not this.

Your phone has 2 speakers - front, and back.
As i understand, your front speaker (for usual calls) is malfunctioning.
And if you turn SpeakerPhone in call, then you can hear oponent?
Try to clear port, this wont hurt. But might fix issue. You don't need to disassemble phone, wooden match will do too for cleaning.
Just nothing wet, and don't do rough movements inside port.
It's a bit fragile.

When it happened to me I had to re-seat the ribbon going from the speaker to the sim board. it is very sensitive and I had to do it twice before I got connection back....i just banged the phone around too much and the ribbon lost contact....After the ribbon is seated correctly then just don't tighten that screw too much as it will unseat the ribbon again.
So, gosha.
Anything fixed?
I did as you suggested Yuna, I tried cleaning the 3.5mm port but I'm afraid it had no effect.
Then I disassembled the phone again and as Rmntruexjr suggested, I tried re-seating the ribbon connecting the speaker module to the circuit board several times while the phone is turned on and I'm trying to play music throughout the ordeal. That didn't help either. As previously, ringers work and the loud speaker works but alarm clock, music and the front speaker for calls do not.
Does anyone know if the music and alarm clock are being played by the front or back speaker?
If they are played by the front speaker then the problem is obviously a malfunction in the front speaker and I should just get a new one. Otherwise, there is something weird going on and the back speaker only plays some of the sound and then I can't explain it.
music is played from back speaker.
stupid q: did you checked volume levels?

Yup. Just to make sure, we are talking about System Settings -> Sound -> Volumes?
However, your question has just made me recheck all the settings and apparently the alarm clock does work!
The current situation is music and front speaker in-call sound doesn't work, but back speaker in call sound works and so do all of the ringers, notifications and alarms.
So, if you play music - no go? Try volume buttons in-playing.
There are 4 different volumes, and 1 hidden.
Front speaker might be broken. Try stock rom, if not helping - service.
And also in call try to adjust volume.
Try kernel with/without voodoo sound. Install/uninstall voodoo sound.

No go on the music, same with the volume buttons in call.
As for the kernel, I don't think there is a voodoo and cmc version for the 4.2 Devil kernel (for whatever reason), I only found one version of it - set me straight if i'm wrong.
I'll try rolling back and flashing CM 10.0, i'll see if it helps and report back.
Servicing the phone here is probably out of the question since i897's don't exist in my country, only i9000's so if it comes down to hardware, i'll just order a new speaker module from ebay and install it myself.
But to order, you must be sure its speaker itself.
Sounds like software issue now...

I'm actually surprised the ribbon trick didn't work. I know your issue sounds messed up, but what you describe is detail for detail what I was seeing. It made no sense what so ever to me how for instance no front speaker in call but still speaker phone worked, but then no music, yet alarm works....(i think the ribbon can lose contact on just the right side so you only get some things working).
Sorry it didn't work for you, but it might be worth it to try again if you exhaust all other possibilities. If you do, keep the phone off while trying to seat the ribbon(and make sure the little black fastener is all the way open(up) when inserting the ribbon). Then to test without putting it all back together I used an elastic to hold the battery and tested that way........
If it really does turn out to be the front speaker/jack/sensor unit, I found one last month on ebay for around $2 for a cappy with a bad Jack and it was fairly easy to replace.
For what it's worth, mine stopped working the other day for no reason. Hit it, and now it works. Just something to try (not too hard of course, just a light tap on the hand )

Same issue....That is how mine started...I dropped it one day then I went to play music and the sound would just cut out for no reason it seemed...I could shake or tap on the phone and it would come back on for a while, then nothing again....for me, it was the speaker ribbon.
Ahh that's kinda crappy (no pun intended). As soon as I hit mine, it worked the whole time the phone wasn't bricked .
PS I keep getting outbid on these alltechwholesale auctions by the same guy -_-"

So, I rolled back to CM 10.0 and no change, which means that it's probably a hardware issue, albeit, a very weird one.
And no, Israel.

I didn't realize earlier that you had the EXACT same problem so I'll give it another go. It's a good idea with the rubber band, I had to hold the battery throughout the ordeal last time. Even if I order one of these units on ebay now, it'll take about a month to arrive.

I'm afraid I tried everything I could which relates to the common Cappy speaker malfunction, that's not it i'm afraid.
I spent 10 days in the desert prior to this malfunction so it's very possible sand caused something (there is sand inside the phone ) or I may have dropped it or something. I didn't want to mention this earlier so I don't throw you guys off straight into a hardware issue.
Well imo hardware is usually an easy fix, so long as it's not the main board (at that point it'd make more sense to just buy a new phone). Open the phone up (don't be scared, there's a tear-down guide on this section w/ pictures), take a can of compressed air, and lightly go over all of the parts inside the phone. Take care not to knock anything out of place. You may also want to re-connect all of the ribbon cables, just in case one came loose (very VERY high possibility). If you need any extra help you can pm me here or shoot me an email (I work in IT and do hardware repairs all the time ).

Bottom speaker not working anymore

Hi,
since yesterday, the bottom/right speaker of my Moto G 2014 (Stock 4.4.4, not rooted) doesn't work anymore. When there should be stereo sound, only the left channel is audible through the top/left speaker.
Already tried rebooting the phone, didn't make any difference. I don't remember doing anything out of the ordinary that could have caused this. Hopefully it's not a hardware defect since the phone is just a few weeks old.
Has anyone else here already had this issue? If you need more info or have any idea what I could try out, please let me know!
Well, the external speakers shouldn't work that way.
Unless its faulty...... which I think it is.
Does the headphone jack work allright ??
Oh, I forgot to mention that. Headphones are working just fine on both sides.
So I also guess the speaker is faulty. Maybe I should wait for the Lollipop update, see if it changes anything?
Edit:
Tried rebooting in safe mode and cleaning the cache partition. No effect whatsoever...

Help with sound issue

Hope somebody can help please? My Zuk Z2 Pro has lost the earpiece sound when on a phone call. People can hear me, but I cannot hear them. I am sure its a software problem but not sure how to permanently fix it.
I ran a manual engineering test by typing *#*#1111#*#* and checked the speaker and the microphone in settings, they are fine. However, the ‘Rec’ setting wont play any sound to the earpiece.
I have read its a known issue and installing the app mswitch (keycut) worked, but it didnt. I then read about switching off "OK Google", well on a Zuk this is not easy to find, so am not even sure I was able to disable this app.
EDIT: After more investigation I have found that when I turn the voice volume up in ringer settings it does nothing, which I think may be the speaker itself. My wife has the same phone and hers works normally. There are three ringer volumes, and the middle one does nothing but I know it did yesterday
I then tried another app called "Soundabout". This worked and allowed the Rec setting in the engineering side of the phone to play a sound, like an increasing oscillalation of sound. I then restarted the phone and it worked, but not permanently. The app doesn't seem to stay working.
However, when I made a phone call the earpiece speaker still didnt work. I could not hear anybody but they could hear me.
However, it does work when headphones are plugged in.
Does anyone know if a factory reset of the software would help as I am stuck and desperate for help. It just suddenly stopped working yesterday, so am puzzled as to why. The phone is just less than 12 months old, so not particular aged and it has always been in a case and well looked after. Its running stock Android 6 with the ZUI overlay from Zuk, so no changes made to it.
I have de same problem. Two months ago the speakers decreased the volume and microphone does not work properly.
I replaced the usb + mic piece, but the problem remains the same. Now, I have ordered speakers piece, but I guess the problem will continue.
The only thing I can think is the origin of the issue could be the bluetooth earphones that in some way had changed the sound configuration.
Try to qfil ZUI 1.9, if that does ot help then its hardware problem most likely.

Finally I have found the origin of the problem. It was in the dust filters of the phone. I used an special liquid for the screen protector. Some of this liquid goes to the filters. I have cleaned this filter with a brush teeth.
It is silly and I feel dumb.
Simple fix
Please do not feel dumb or stupid as this is something we don't think about.
The problem is due to dust and fabric accumulation. I just had this problem.
The fix is simple.
Use something soft to bang your receiver. In my case i used the tip of my finger. You want to the bang to be good but not to break the glass. My finger hurts a bit so I think a small rubber hammer will do the job.
Hope this helps.
Clean earpiece protector
Hi, I had the same issue and after trying all software tweaks with no success, what I have done is use a toothbrush to clean the tiny holes from the earpiece protector. I pushed some brush bristles gently through the holes and... it worked!!!
Hope it helps.
