Hi community,
I am interested in buying this phone, but I put it next to A72 and tested the camera. I have visited numerous shops to test these out.
These are the main things that bother me:
I found that the screen on the S20 FE is more on the blue-ish side and more dimmer than the A72. Basically, the white on the S20 FE are cold.
The main camera of S20 FE is not as sharp as the A72. I think the S20 FE camera is similar in result as the S21+, but I prefer the result of A72 put side by side.
What do you think?
It depends what matters most to you. Here's a comparison:
Compare Samsung Galaxy A72 vs. Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G - GSMArena.com
www.gsmarena.com
The S20 will be a little bit faster, the camera experiences will be similar, and the A72 will have better battery.
If you're on a budget, get whichever is less money because both are really solid at the end of the day. If you don't care about price, the S20 FE is better all around.
avoid the version that has the Exynos SoC if you do decide to get the FE

I do agree that the FE is faster etc, but do you notice the same difference in panels?

Roughly they are the same price, but I may prefer the A72 based on the display panel... From my view the 4-5 FE I tried had the same "dull" panel. Possibly they changed the manufacturer or have a newer display?

They are "similar" phones but I would say if you prefer the A72 because of the panel then get that one - of course when you have the device you won't be holding them side by side and any difference is quickly forgotten. The A72 has a 3.5mm headphone post which is great. However the reason I picked up a S20 FE 5g was wireless charging but mainly DeX - using desktop modes is what I like to do, but if you don't care about wireless charging or DeX then the A72 certainly is an option.

Looks like this device is packing a punch, especially now snapdragon will finally hit the uk shores. Any ideas why to look at the s20 Ultra over this device?
Is it going up be possible to unlock the bootloader and install chain recovery and ROM in the Snapdragon version of this phone? From a quick look at the S20 section of this forum only the Exynos versions get custom development.

Nope, none. On a value-for-dollar basis, I think this phone trumps the Ultra hands down. In fact, I just cancelled an order for a Note20 Ultra, as I've realized that I don't need, and likely won't ever use, all those premium features that we pay so much for - this phone looks just right for the price to me.
Mine is shipped and I will get it tomorrow!
Not gonna lie, I'm now having second thoughts as a result of the optical fingerprint sensor and camera performance - not deal breakers for sure at this price point, but security and camera performance are top of my list of priorities, so those give me pause.
Got mine a bit ago. To be honest, i can't tell the difference between the S20 FE and the Note 20 I have been using while waiting for it to arrive.
The S20 FE doesn't have the video enhancer setting, which may or may not make a difference. But also I noted in a super quick camera test, that the Note 20 looked better at 3x zoom than the S20 FE did. I would have thought the S20 would have looked better there.

Fingerprint sensor works fine. It's as fast as the sensor on my Huawei P30 Pro and so far hasn't failed to read my fingerprint.

Would you be able to check if the 40W SuperCharger from your P30 Pro works with the S20 FE at 25W?
I'm upgrading from a broken P30 and it would be cool if I didn't have to buy the 25W Samsung charger.
Cheers
My S20 FE 5G is coming today, really excited :victory:

It doesn't work unfortunately. Doesn't seem to be charging any faster than the standard charger.
As the title says, i'm looking to get a new Phone and can't really decide.
I'm getting the non-5G version in Germany, so for the S20, Exynos it is. I have the S10e now and never had major issues with that Exynos, so it's not really a downside for me.
I've had Xiaomi phones in the past and neither MIUI nor OneUI bother me.
It basically comes down to: I've had better luck with unlocking xiaomi phones (and this still seems to be true now), but the Samsung offers AMOLED. Both are high refreshrate. I don't care for cameras too much.
The xiaomi will be marginally cheaper (not by much). I just need a large phone to replace my S10e now and it really seems to be a toss up in this case. What would you choose? Maybe had experience with either of the phones?

You basically answered your question. If you don't mind too much about exynos and the difference in price is minimal, pick the S20 FE. You'll have the AMOLED and some extras like, IP68, Samsung PAY, DEX, and others.

Yeah wasn't sure how big the Exynos "penalty" was this generation. Seems Standby drain is higher from what i gathered. You're probably right as the screen is the most important thing on a phone. Since we're charging every day anyways...
I liked that the Mi10T is a bit bigger but i guess that's only noticable in direct comparison.
People really overestimate online on how much the exynos is behind of snapdragon. By notebookcheck's benches, it's barely -10% slower, but people also forget the 5G SD version is up to 150€ more expensive in some places, so you end up paying over 20% more for 10% performance.
Coming from the S20 Ultra. NOt sure if its worth the upgrade. Anyone upgrading from S20 Ultra?
Here.
My reasons are the S Pen (I miss the Note experience), adaptive refresh (without entering on screen settings every minute), the Phantom Black color (my carrier sent me a grey S20 Ultra and I hate it) and the camera (hope the S21U won't have the same focus problems of the S20U). And my carrier gives me 680€ for my S20U (a half of the S21U 256GB price).
Im on the Note 20 Ultra now and ordered the S21 Ultra. I skipped the S20 last year so thought Id check it out this year.
The camera and fingerprint sensor Im looking forward to trying but all im all not much of a jump from the note.

It's also thicker and heavier than Note 20!
Bigger battery!
Not worth the upgrade besides the camera. It is heavier and thicker. It is more like a downgrade if anything. No microsd, smaller display, same battery. Will wait for next year's

Significantly better focus on the S21 ultra, plus 3x AND 10x optical zoom.
If cameras are your #1 consideration then yes, upgrade. If not, then you are probably better to waiting for S22U release.
Hi... Currently I have the S21 Ultra and really enjoy the phone. I always wanted a note, but due to pricing in my country, I couldn't afford a note on contract. I have seen the specs for S22 ultra and is quite excited with the prospect of getting a s pen with the S22 ultra built in. I wasn't convinced to get s pen separately in a case for the S21 ultra. Will you upgrade/ who is exc2for the release of the S22 ultra??
If you REALLY miss the Note range with integral S-Pen slot then yes, maybe, and depending on price you can get selling your S21 Ultra
For all other reasons, NO the S22U is an S21U with an S-Pen slot and very few enhancements or upgrades over the 2021 models.

S22 ultra doesn't seem like a huge upgrade over the S21U. If an integrated S-Pen is an absolute must-have for you, then by all means get the new phone. But other than that, I don't see a compelling reason to buy one. The S21 Ultra is still an amazing phone even after a year. And honestly speaking, the design is so iconic, I would choose this over the S22U design anyday (based on all the leaks). But that is a highly subjective matter, so it's upto the buyer. If you can afford it and justify it, go for it. Life is short, do the things you enjoy
Not sure if it's worth but trying to beat the boredom of "life in the time of Covid" I went ahead with the reservation, aiming for the 'ultra'.
Hey, it's not a marriage - I can still send it back if I don't fall in love with it on the first sight.
I know the specs aren't that much better then the S21 ultra, but the s range has always been way cheaper in south africa then the note, so I would like to have the s pen, but it all depends on the price on contract
No, I won't be upgrading. First off there are very few improvements, nothing is innovative. Secondly there have been numerous problems in producing the Exynos/AMD SoC. Thirdly it will ship with Android 12 which to date is still plagued with numerous bugs. The S21 works much better on Android 11.
it happens to almost all phones.
i still own s10 plus, works perfectly
I also get the s21 ultra
tempteing to get s-pen th0

Samsung is generous with trade-in, plus if you resever now, you save 50!
In south africa there is no trade in deals... Just the normal carrier deals... So, hopefully it won't be too expensive
Tbh I don't think it worth upgrading to the S22 Ultra, it's got to the point now where any improvements are only minor even the camera on the S22 Ultra will only be slightly better than the S21 Ultra, plus i wouldn't be surprised once One UI 4.1 hits the S21 Ultra these improvements are brought down from the S22 Ultra.
I've had my S21 Ultra since last July this has been hands down best phone I've ever owned from Samsung, & i've had practically most of the S range & Note's over the years, the only downside to keeping the S21 Ultra really will be waiting slightly longer for updates once the S22 series has launched.
So I'm going to keep enjoying my S21 Ultra until the S23 Ultra next year.
Will see how it goes and what offers and trade ins are available. I have always been an S series user but loved the Spen support on the Ultra. It is a beast and having got the 512gb 16gb ram I could run it another year or so without any hiccups given that I haven't used it to its full pontential due to Covid.
Only thing I am worried with the S22 Ultra is the 45 Fast Charging and the Crammed 5000mah battery which although welcome I am afraid it might have those 'burst into flames' issues samsung had and how the new amd graphics might come with its own issues with Android 12.
No doubt it will have even a more Awesome battery life compared to the S21 Ultra and better Spen support with bluetooth and stuff. I am sure with the New Expert Raw and the Spen Bluetooth functionality they will promote it as a mobile Photographers Dream phone not to mention the ease of editing with the Spen.
Have my options open and will see how it pans out.
Wouldnt want to be a guinea pig for SD 8 Gen1. New and unproven soc.
For S21 Ultra users, the trade in deal needs to be great, otherwise it is not worth the upgrade, simple as that imo
Thanks for everybody given their input....
New camera sensor for even more light/detail
New CPU with ray tracing and best GPU available (plus fastest multicore)
S-Pen with higher latency and accuracy than previous
Best screen on market with even more brightness
And hopefully flat display instead of waterfall wasteful curved screen (fingers crossed on this)
Pls upgrade is free to me, so it's a 'hell yeah' from me.

In the USA yes Samsung is ultra generous with trade-in. In UK not so much ...
Outside of US, ebay and FB Marketplace selling prices are much higher than trade in.

"New CPU with ray tracing and best GPU available"
Samsung has experienced numerous production issues with the Exynos 2200 SoC. Out of an entire wafer only a few chipsets are functional. Raytracing is misleading since there are currently no apps capable of raytracing integration on smartphones. In Geekbench 5 tests the Exynos/AMD 2200 was out performed not only by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 but the Snapdragon 888 also. There may be a few good reasons to buy an S22 but hoping for a better SoC isn't one of them.
Exynos 2200 is even weaker than the Snapdragon 888
Exynos 2200 is even weaker than the Snapdragon 888. The new flagship chipset Samsung lost to all competitors.

Here's how it's going to sound...you would have read all the views here and it's mostly a no to the upgrade. But, this thread was a validation for your already made up mind to go ahead with the S22U. I am definitely looking forward to the S-Pen being built in. I do a lot of photo editing using my fat fingers so having the pressure-sensitive pen will save me a lot of "undo/redo" time.
The latest "leaked images" show the screen flatter without the curved edges and I like that clean look. I can upgrade for free with my network so I am ready to leap!
Main priority is battery life. Budget is not the issue. Kinda inclined towards s21u design too. But confused about getting the newer thing.
Any thoughts?
(S pen matters little to none)
Snapdragon
Exynos has had a history of being worse than Snapdragon, especially battery life. Recently there has been news of some S22 Ultra Exynos devices having display issues. I would recommend getting the Snapdragon variant.

Overoll i think Snapdragon is better but that new Snapdragon 8 gen 1 getting really hot in gaming or heavy camera use.
Here is one thread about it.
S22 Ultra gets VERY HOT (120°F during gaming)
Well been using my 22 Ultra for a few days now. Everything seems pretty solid, performance is good, cameras are fine. Mine does have 12gb of RAM and is the Snapdragon variant. But I noticed during gaming for even 10-15 minutes on stuff like Real...

Battery life was something you listed as important. The S22U is getting panned for it's bad battery life.
Snapdragon S22U i would buy in a heartbeat if Samsung offered it in the UK
I get barely over 500k on Antutu ... S22U snapdragon is close to 900k-1m
Plus the ISP is better on SD
Battery life is better
There's literally NO benefit in any catagory for Samsung in which the Exynos wins
It's a terminally failed experiment

It's just so disrespectful to customers.... 1 product, 2 variants, both same price but with year-on-year proving inferiority in ISP, GPU and battery for Exynos

So, is Oppo any better? As long as you have variety in Android, it will be difficult to settle down on a single brand/ model. Well, that's both the pro and con of Android. If you want consistent performance, battery life, look, and can live with a pre-historic design as well as with a 2-year-old tech, then Apple is the only way forward.

I really want an S22 ultra --- i like everything about it's positives but the negatives at the moment are just too overwhelming to justify spending almost £1300 on a device that's again worse than it's sibling.
My S21U has become really bad this past couple months since the Android 12 upgrade... even did a factory reset and setup the phone again clean (pain to have to do) but it's no better.
My antutu scores are far worse than even another Exynos 2100 phone (i get around 550000, others get anywhere from 600000-750000). Similar story on most benchmarks, i get significantly down scores in every aspect, i juyst have a bad bin chip but since it's not faulty Samsung wouldn't touch it.
Games stutter really bad, i have to turn down settings on most games that run flawlessly on my wife's OnePlus 9Pro
I agree that Android is what it is -- but I'm done with Exynos ... until they give us the choice of SOC in UK i'm not giving them more money.
I had an S21 Ultra Exynos when it came out and it lasted about 2/3 months before i got so frustrated with it.
I have now (as of last week) purchased a Snapdragon version from ebay and the difference is unreal !
