What ever happened to just WinMo and Blackberry and Symbian?
We now have
Windows Mobile
Windows Phone Series 7
Android
WebOS
Bada
LG are developing there own
S-Class (sort of counts?)
iPhone OS
Motorola are developing there own
Symbian s60
Maemo
Blackberry OS
I know more choice is usually a better thing, but surely there is a limit?
Agree, this is way too many! Some will not succeed or will be combined in the next few years.
Don't forget about Brew Mobile by Qualcomm
There is a big difference between Smart OS and other Regular OS`s that intended to be for feature phones , such as Brew, S40 Nokia feature phones platform .. I personally dont think its right to classify Beda OS as smart OS .. but anyway samsung is using the "Smart" word more that any other company.
Btw LG announced they are not planning to build an OS.
Its good to have variety of choices plus it bring up new stuff .. look how amazing webOS is,how stable iPhone OS is .. and hey .. seems like android is capable of putting the best of all out there ..
anyway .. in time the bad OSes will die and disappear the good ones only would make it and stay

Have you seen the spec on the Bada OS phone? Cetainly seems like a smartphone to me!
But I agree with Brew and s40 not really counting - they're aimed at more budget phones.
Nevertheless do we need 6+ options?
samsung are making their own linux based os too
and nokia and intel are merging their linux based into 1 I read
wow you completely forgot blackberry the king of messaging i mean i know it actually sucks at web browsing but i mean when i start using my berry loads i type faster on that i can on my computer. i gotta say i do like iphone os and winmo. but i recon im gonna go android from now on i've used symbian it suck used blackberry and i hate the ui ( love the messaging and the intergration with facebook i mean us winmo guys get sent an email and have to reply to that but with blackberry the email comes thru but appears as a facebook notification in your messages if you open it it instantly opens the facebook app and takes you to that message photo or status) i like iphone just wish it was more customisable (dad has an iphone and loves everything except the fact you can't change stuff as easily such as battery light from the home screen) i'm using winmo and its bearable due to the fact that sense ui is amazing. but android is the way forward. but in response i feel we probably need about 4 each for diffrent people iphone for anyone android for anyone who hates apple (or realised its actually better than iphone) blackberry for people who need amazing messaging and winmo 7 for thoose windows fan boys

Its not that big in the U.K you get the odd one or two, but there certainly not mass market. Although they have done a recent (ongoing) ad campaign on the TV.
But yeah, I completely forgot Blackberry OS.
Don't forget the new MeeGo OS too! What OS are Moto developing?

Dont know, I think its only in its initial stages. Theres just been posts on various blogs about it. Not too sure weather or not its true.
Hadn't realized we had so many "sorta" working phone O/S'es out there. The company that makes an O/S that works bug-free out-of-the-box will cash in big. To steal a famous quote:
"One O/S to rule them all and in the darkness bind them."
What I'd like to see:
From Android:
Android Phone OS - Android basic OS for phones
AndroidMB - Android mobile business. Google needs to focus on the business market that doesn't strive for a hippie company that lets their entire staff come outside for the passing of Street View vehicles
From Apple:
iPhoneOS
MMB - Mac Mobile Business
From Microsoft
Windows Phone
Windows Mobile Business
I want a business phone that is as close as possible to a mobile computer. Not some interface that makes it fast for me to make a couple quick swipes with my finger to show someone a YouTube video. I understand that it's where the market is going, but there's a lot more contract money in business. Microsoft knows this. Everyone else needs to join the bandwagon. Microsoft can't forget this.

Wow. Just Wow. This will be huge!
Personally I find more choice is better. The more competition the better things are for the user in the end run, i.e. better technology, lower prices to name a few. Yes, it can be confusing on which to choose, but would you rather we all use the same device??? Didn't think so.
Also, not are new technologies make it, look at the mini-disc as one example of a technology which was supposed to take over from the CD, but were is it now??? The same applies to phone OS.....not all will make it, but the ideas behind these technologies will be incorporated into the ones which will succeed.....again only better for the end user

I have read in today newspaper that both CEO from Nokia and Microsoft have met and decided to join and will launch new Nokia windows based smart phone in 2011-12.
they are going to take this step against Apple and highly growing android device to jeep them both alive in competition
I thinks that Nokia is wrong. But only the time will tell us that's true or not.
with this..nokia wil be far away from android
More Competition is a good thing, I have heard mostly nothing but good things about WP7, but having never seen one in real life I'm not so sure. Symbian will be missed by some, I think it might have been better if Nokia started selling Android and WP7 handsets.

Nokia has already said they don't want to go Android. I don't agree with this, but symbian was a dying platform, and they chose Windows Phone 7 to keep them going. I'm glad they chose an Os that has some interest in it, unlike Meego. Meego has hardly any type of interest in it. Intel is even going on the Android train against Meego, even though they created Meego with Nokia.

It is kind of disappointing though that they couldn't get anyone interest in Meego. I would definitely like to see new OS from Nokia that was interesting.
Even though they're making some Win7 Phones, Nokia still mentioned they were more interested in developing their own phone software. Who knows what will happen in the next 2-3 years though.
I admit I that it is sad that they at least reduced speed for MeeGo.
But well,
at their current situation if kind of makes sense. Microsoft needs someone that the first generation of WP7 wasn't the last in the market. And I guess there are already too many good Android manufacturers. So hopefully WP7 helps them to survive the next two years and hopefully they are by then done with ready-to-release MeeGo version.

Me to, this is going to be a disaster
Well i dont think nokia did anything wrong.
If all phone have same Android Os than no body will purchase nokia. So i think this is very good move of nokia that it going with window and not choose Android.
Even Local mobile phone company also has Android Os on thair Cheap Smartphones.
By the way Meego also have very small market till now.
But if nokie going with Window , so Nokia Qt will also support in Nokia's Window phone. i dont think nokia wasted their time to make Qt Market and developers.
So i hope Qt will support in Nokia's Window Phone.
watch this what 3rd party developers say about the merger...
haha, Maybe my next phone is nokia with wp7..
On one side, they're right to drop Symbian and move on to something newer.
On the other side, they're wrong to chose WP7 and not Android, cause Android is 'the new hotness'. It's getting all the developer love and support, while we haven't even heard of ANNOUNCEMENTS for ports of popular apps.
I don't know what their deal with Android is, but at least they're doing something new on a new OS, not stone-age Symbian.
Symbian is officially dying, Nokia did the sensible thing.
I think i may have found a new os for the nook. Im not a guru on this stuff so maybe you can tell me... i was scrolling thru the qnx hardware supported list and saw that it supports the texas instruments omap. Can qnx be ported over? Im gonna look more into myself but if someone else with more experiance on the nook wants to go for it, be my guest.
Nookie Froyo 0.6.8 (zoom2)/Tapatalk Pro
I was reading that some folks have also ported Ubuntu onto the Nook Color. Interesting.
Qnx barely has a UI. I will try to port the Blackberry Qnx distro if it can be extracted.
Is QNX freely distributable? I didn't think it was.
It is free for developers.. and yes qnx does have a ui. I have used it before on the x86 platform about 2 years ago. Im slightly excited to see if qnx'll run cuz its a zippy lil os.
Nookie Froyo 0.6.8 (zoom2)/Tapatalk Pro
I too used QNX on x86 a few years back (like.. 10) and found it a very pleasant experience. At the time they had a development app called phbuilder which was very nice. I haven't really followed it much since then but I think the major hurdle to get it on the NC will be device drivers.

I have a feeling it will be full of security hooks, knowing RIM.
Apparently one of the things that kept the PlayBook in development so long was that QNX has no built-in power management module and they had to work on that from scratch.
This is one of the first time it will be running on batteries. It used to a desktop os
Nook Color via Xda App
Rumors say, RIMs QNX will run apps from the android market in the months to come. This is interesting as RIMs next line of blackberry will all run QNX... hmmmm.....

What are the chances? Just wondering.
It would be amazing and I would probably throw in some money myself.
Wanted to post a thread on this too. Im also very interested on this. ^^
they already have half working meego ports for nexus one, can't be that far of a stretch to get the n9 version working, assuming it is open like meego.
Waste of time. MeeGo is a stillborn OS. The N9 and the N950 will be the only devices to EVER run MeeGo. Why spend time on something with no future... especially when Android is dominating the market.
Give it time
I have high hopes for Meego and if there is ever a N1 port I will definitely try it. Also, Meego is definitely not a stillborn OS. Sure, it's been slow to take off but this is in large part due to Nokia screwing the open source community by getting into bed with Microsoft to make Windows phones. But despite this, there has been very positive reviews for the flagship Meego phone, the Nokia N9. Prior to being released, everyone thought the N9 would be a lazy excuse for a handset but now are astonished to see how sexy Meego looks. Keep in mind Meego is part of the Linux Foundation which means a more free license than the apache/google licensing which is perpetually having lawsuits pile up. Give it some time, Meego will inevitably end up being ported to the N1. Oh, and I read somewhere that Meego either can or will be able to run Android apps in the future so making the switch might not end up being too hard

I beg to differ. It looks like MeeGo is already running on other devices. Also, it's open source which means it at least has a shot at life past any sort of official support. Heck, maybe there are features we'll find in it that we like enough to put into Android.
I think it's great to have many roms to choose (even when i think that meego have no future ) but still, it would be nice to test it on my N1

Well its still nice to experience a new platform without buying a new phone. Even the gestures may work since the row of menu/home/back/search button is part of the capacitive layer.
Ubuntu just released Ubuntu phone os as see running on a galaxy nexus. This thing looks wonderful and I can wait to see it come to the nexus 4. Check this out

If it was up to me I think this is what android should evolve into even if it meant Google buying Ubuntu.
This is very well thought out is which basically uses the entire phone screen things are done through swypes and speech and everything looks like it works. The only thing may be app support.

Its not a full fledged Linux OS its Ubuntu's version of a phone OS, basically Ubuntu Android. The docking mentioned in the promo sounds like the Motorola Atrix concept all over. There are developers who have ported Ubuntu to other phones but they pretty much had limited usability for lack of drivers; no wifi, data, etc. This should port over easier as it uses android drivers. Also sounds like all android apps will not work with this?

It is great there is a little lag but this is pre release software and I believe it could be easily fixed. But even with the lag on a galaxy nexus I think this would run beautifully smooth on a nexus 4.

Yep it doesn't look like android apps would work, but if they could make that work or even evolve android into something like this it would be cool.
What's the definition of "full fledged" Linux OS? We're getting close on the kernel. Otherwise install Busybox and you're there, IMO
Exactly like Ubuntu's Desktop the limitations here will be apps.. I prefer my Debian/Ubuntu-based Linux Mint + Cinnamon over all OS's including Chrome & MacOS, but the lack of apps (which isn't changing anytime soon) will be insurmountable

Yes the os is is nice and it does work, but the major downfall of this is app support and developer support;they need this to take Ubuntu phone os to the top.

Well, it'll obviously be a lot better when Ubuntu creates it rather than uninvolved developers, of course. Ubuntu is usually not one to disappoint.
Also, I don't really get why they skipped the Nexus 4 and went with the Galaxy Nexus. Maybe it's just cause not enough people own the Nexus 4 yet, and due to supply as well, rather than demand.
I think this should be Android based, like TouchWiz. Then we could just easily flash it like a custom ROM and all our apps would be compatible and available from GPlay.
I think I'll still try this out though, looks promising.
Did I hear that it won't come to phones until 2014?

Purchasable phones is what they meant by that. The firmware images are being released soon, which should find there way to a multitude of devices shortly.
It'll be much better than any other OS as long as it gets support, the desktop version is amazing but lack of developer support means you have to use Windows still. I'm not a fan of stock Android, Google never seem to be able to keep up, Touchwiz is so much better. So I cannot wait to see what Ubuntu will turn out like after a few revisions.

There was a dev in the Incredible forums who tried to port Ubuntu to the phone, he got it to boot and then pretty much quit. I think the same thing was also tried with the Eris back in 2010.
