i don't know why i have spurts of funny hatred when i see a use of the word 'lol'.
i am still comfortable with LMAO, OMG, WTF but its the 'lol' people use when it is least expected......rather it least fits.
LOL as i know is abbreviation of
"laugh out loud" (most common)
"lots of luck" or "lots of love" (less common--infact non-existant)
Now, if somebody cracks an awesome joke...and people use this word to express their hearty laugh, its still ok.
But these days its being plain overdone, i'll give you some good examples;
it was my first rollercoaster ride, it was awesome lol..
lol..my cousin kicked the sh*t outta me
it was my uncle's funeral ..lol..
eeew .. i forgot...its your birthday lol
SORRY..LOL!!
lol..you are funny!
omg , i gtg srry....catch'ya later lol..
if somebody is so amused by such crap that he/she feels like laughing so bad...i feel that person's got to be the biggest loser around.
and if 'lol' in itself was not enough for some people they invented similar words - 'lolz' or lolzz or lolzzz (add more z's to make it stronger)
wtf is lolzzzzz? -'lots of laughs and then suddenly dozing off?" Thank heavens keyboards don't have feelings!
just wanted to share this thing with you guys. how do you all feel?
sorry if i offended some 'lollers'!
PEACE
yeah the
"lol it's jesus"
jokes really show how language can be turned into the enemy of all living things
but then guess older people have always felt that the younger crowd abuses the language

LOL!
Coming to the point, yeah, its annoying these days. People use the word 'LOL' just for no reason. I cannot figure out, if it makes them feel that they're cool.
Also, people also seem to use 'LMAO' for no reason! Do they really 'laugh their ass off'? *no*
and i am so proud that i've never used this damn word in my general english except for when i talk about it being a symbol of "wannabes"
and i won't use it until somebody points a gun at my head and tells me to type 'lol'
.......and i'll feel like such a loser afterwards!
and yes- i am don't contribute to younger crowd spoiling the language as i am myself 20 years of age!
lol to me has always meant and always will mean "lots of love."
so when i see it all over the place, i just think "what a lovely world it is that we live in, all this love around in the air"

Aye, I thought the same and thus used it at the end of some SMSs, etc. when it simply wasn't appropriate according to what the recipient understood it to mean.
A lass I was very much into some years back thought I was slightly making fun of her as I ended most of my SMS with lol and she eventually asked why I always thought that fairly innoccuous remarks warranted laughing out loud at the end.
Naturally, I felt a right Herbert. Since then I've only used it in the way everyone else does. Not that I use a lot of abbeviations anyway: I tend to punctuaute SMSs or any other messages in the normal way, not least because I used to be a grammar teacher.
wikipedia gives the bast answer

Penny for your thoughts
I think that there is so much shorthand that people place into what they write, that even this generation has forgotten to even spell the very words! "lol" is so misused, as well as things like "4, lmao, (and what ever else is out there!!)", (show how behind the times i am!!!) If there was not the bulk of the SMS (Short messaging Services) out there, maybe people might be able to write correct!!! Well, that is just my thought...

is that "write correct" or "write correctly"
"lol is lol", is lol. (LOL!)
To freely use an acronym, a Dutch word and a Welsh word, in an English sentence.
Seriously though: I mind these words in certain situations. If you are chatting with someone over the computer, using IRC or instant messaging or whatever, words like LOL and such can be used. Now and then in a forum post is ok. Using it in spoken language is a definite no! What bothers me a lot more is the more random abbreviations of other words user by everybody all over the place. If it's not worth to spell out, it's quite likely not worth saying in the first place.
Yeah. People nowadays.

i was pissed off at one of my friends for excessive lolling.
perfect definition (to me!)
from urbandictionary.com
It's original definition was "Laughing out loud" (also written occasionally as "Lots of Laughs"), used as a brief acronym to denote great amusement in chat conversations.
Now, it is overused to the point where nobody laughs out loud when they say it. In fact, they probably don't even give a **** about what you just wrote. More accurately, the acronym "lol" should be redefined as "Lack of laughter."
Depending on the chatter, its definition may vary. The list of its meanings includes, but is not limited to:
1) "I have nothing worthwhile to contribute to this conversation."
2) "I'm too lazy to read what you just wrote so I'm typing something useless in hopes that you'll think I'm still paying attention."
3) "Your statement lacks even the vaguest trace of humor but I'll pretend I'm amused."
4) "This is a pointless acronym I'm sticking in my sentence just because it's become so engraved into my mind that when chatting, I MUST use the meaningless sentence-filler 'lol.'"
See: lmao, lmfao, rofl, lawl, heh, haha, lolol, and 120 for similarities.
Statement: Sorry if I'm not too cheery, my best friend just died yesterday.
Worthless Reply: lol
Statement: The golden ratio is truely an intersting aspect of not only mathematics, but art as well.
Worthless Reply: lol
Statement: ... And then he says, "Your mom goes to college!"
Worthless Reply: lol
Statement: Hey, are you doing anything tonight? You could come over to my house and play some Unreal Tournie...
Worthless Reply: lol, ok

great find. thanks buddy
how true!
Well this thread really made me smile, if not lol!!!
hmm... i got nothing against "lol" if it's used in chatrooms (IRC and stuff like that) but i think it really doesn't belong in a Forum... a place where you CAN take your time writing a reply, not unlike in IRC where you have to react instantaneously and are more inclined to just type "lol" than elaborate that you are laughing.
It's equally annoying when i see kids tranferring "lol" from the virtual to real word, using it instead of REALLY laughing... that is were proper usage line of "lol" drops instantly.
Now i've said "kids" use this frequently... having noticed that, i reminded myself that i'm just 26 years old... and yet, i feel like an oldtimer when i hear kids speak these days.
http://uncyclopedia.org/wiki/Lol
Well I figure this is the proper place to put this, odds are almost no one will read it, but whatever. I've been around here for not yet a year and have learned a lot, and I have been amazed by the graphic and programming talents of many people.
While I understand a certain impatience/anxiety when waiting for a new release (ROM, theme, whatever...) from your favorite cook, designer, etc. there really isn't a need to clog the discussion thread up with posts that just say you are waiting. It doesn't contribute suggestions to the author, or help others.
On those lines...most people in here have lives outside of this forum, and programming, and hopefully our phones (don't get me wrong I love my phone, but I'll put it down in a heartbeat to go play with my daughter). So when you are anxiously waiting for that release posting comments like "oh [insert author here] hasn't posted an update in so it must mean they abandoned the project" is inconsiderate.
Is there a chance that they abandoned it, well yes, but odds are they would post something saying so. Most likely life got in the way (family, friends, going on holiday, computer crashing, programs failing, fire, flood, famine, etc). Give them time, most likely they will deliver what they promised. Complaining about the time it takes for someone to develop a FREE program/theme is hard for me to understand.
Well there is my 2cents...so comment away, flame, ban me, what ever. I just had to put it out there, and I wanted to do it somewhere other than the last thread I read that set me on this rant.
+1 I agree. Mind If I link to this in my Signature?

The thing is that this is the nature of 'useful information'.
If the site was another drone the nature of the post would reflect that. They would be limited. But XDA is a site that has far reaching uses and applications, its only right that there's going to be some runoff.
This site is an example of the power of a truly informative forum.
Okay I just thought up a little game that can get amusing or funny depending on what the person in the next post says. All you have to do is answer the question above then ask your own "What-if" question. Just make your question in bold so everyone can see it quickly. Your reply to the question above you can be answered any way you'd like, if you seriously cant answer it(or the question is just plain stupid) then just say pass and post the question you wanted to ask.
MODS REMOVE ASAP IF: You don't approve, things get a little much, or this just turns into a cesspool of flames.

Get out of my Thread. Go kiss up to someone not on here.
This is my reply to the mess of a thread located at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=781513
I hope my suggestions are taken in the very helpful spirit that they were typed.
Thanks folks.
I'm gonna be all trolly here and what not. Is there not a way to simply FORCE people to read? As in, you can't post for 3 weeks after you join? It wouldn't stop people from being stupid, but it would help train them to Search & Read in the 3 weeks that they desperately wait for a Rom to drop.
This thread has the train wreck effect... I couldn't not read the whole damn thing. (I am actually very interested in getting the originally mentioned feature, btw.) And yes my post is Off-Topic, yet ridiculously relevant. I have quietly been a member of this forum for years and haven't seen this kind of wasted space ever. Maybe I should stop recommending people "Go check out xda developers online..." I am partially responsible for getting these people here. But, I believe a strong, open community is the best way to get results. Perhaps, all new members trying to post new threads outside of the General/Q&A forums get redirected to the Advanced Search page unless verified by a mod as a legitimate dev contributor? I am sure that would require coding a module for the forums... And since I don't know how to do any of that I will end my trolliness now. Oh wait, maybe a simpler solution - A "Wrong forum button" where if enough people vote the post gets moved. Seems simple enough and the mods can get the help they need without have the more - zealous - members of our community take matters into their own hands.
Thanks for your time and attention to my suggestions. I will now look for an appropriate place to post this in the main forum.
-Memo

poll looks pretty inconclusive to me
Very umm, intellectual thread read that was.
But you know when inviting a couple of close friends over turns into a full blown Hizouse Partaaay a couple of fights are gonna break out...
Actions as such in that thread aren't very rampant but can make for an interesting read. But comparing contributions, join date and or post count in any situation is pretty moronic.
Has there ever been a thread where it ended happy and all party's posted:
Like, man I'm sorry man I was drunk.
Oh no man it's cool, man my wife was gettin on me about the garbage and kids were nagging.
So are we cool?
Yeah man. Can I invite you as a friend?
Oh totally!
That would be awesome to see...
good day.
I have seen many happy ending threads actually.
And honestly, I didn't really understand your ideas on what is being discussed. I think that if the actions were rampant then this site would be dying as many have before. XDA has a very long legacy, and it should be protected BEFORE it becomes a problem. Just how telling a 15 y/o that suddenly his backtalk is not acceptable would have no effect, telling the new influx of users being drawn by the boom in mobility that they have to behave in the forums when everything they see is "IS.HE.THE.DADDY.DNA.TEST-Developers.com" would be ineffective. Needs to be taken care of early. Prevent the problem. Don't waste tons of resources trying to fix it.
And just to be clear were you at all trying to be offensive, snarky, or sarcastic? Just curious.

Actually just noticed the [Q] on the thread title, your post didn't really reference adding on to your suggestions. So my bad for not seeing the [Q]. Wrong forum button does have some potential. But the experienced xda user should know who his forum mod is and send a pm outlining any gripe with link to thread before turning it into a public chest puffing competition where in the end all who participated look like morons.
Is it feasible to have an ethics moderating committee that would monitor the content and actions of the first 15 posts of a new member? But it all still comes down to an individual showing that they have the utmost respect for xda and its users. Members involved in your example are not spring chickens and should be a little ashamed. Because a new user might think that is the norm for the forum.

No. The house party statement does hold a lot truth though. Even 3 years ago the "smart phone" was seen as a business tool. Even you brought up the influx of new users as result of the mobile boom. I'm 36 now and didn't even get a cell phone till I was 23. Now I see children with devices that I would die to have or be able to afford. The age demographic of this site has changed so dramatically over the last couple of years. And as elder members we can only protect the image of xda by policing our own actions and utilizing the forum mods for what they are intended for.
Since it is off topic I still feel like I need to have a little fun.
Boobs....... o.k. I'm done.
good day.
a good start would be requiring everyone to add a nice greeting to the end of their posts according to the time of the day
ive talked to the mods about this in the past and they liked the idea, but havent added it yet:
requiring a signature to be set up upon first signing up to xda including current phone/s, rom, recovery, hboot, kernel...
having set up so that registering could not continue without filling out these fields (of course there would have to be a "how-to" option to help those that dont know what those are or how to find out what they have)
this would stop the
"can someone help me please! my phone wont boot"
"what phone do you have?"
"G1"
"what rom are you running?"
"stock 1.6"
"what hboot?"
exchanges which take up half the posts in a lot of threads

I don't know that it would be feasible. I was even thinking of perhaps a Volunteer Buddy Moderation, where you have to submit your first 5 posts for approval from a mentor. The mentor would be in charge of making sure the protocol was followed - Search And Read, Label subject line correctly, and provide full info... I just don't know that anyone is willing to work on the actual Forum Coding... And adding more work to the mods wouldn't be a good idea. If they had the time to constantly be vigil, they would kill the problem posts as soon as they are noticed.

Some people have every intent of being offensive. Don't really get the point but hey.
Kids will be kids
What i see is a lot of kids (15-30) in this forum tend to think since they know...... you should too. Forums should encourage newbies to get involved and once they are communicating then, reroute them to the right forum etc. this kind of considerate rational act would improve and make this forum WAY better, but then, I digress.
Requiring the signature probably would be helpful, but I think the moderator being vigilant and remind the sarcastic, inconsiderate they once were Newbies may be just as effective. People need to remember that not all here are devs, programmers or really techies. A lot are here for the education..... but then....my wife always said i was too much an idealist
