Can this model Google Pixel 5 5G GD1YQ bootloader be unlocked? - Google Pixel 5 Questions & Answers

I don't know if it's from Verizon or Google unless that particular model is either or.The seller says it was gift, but unlocked.

Ask him for the IMEI. With that you can check if it's a Verizon model. You can also check if it's blacklisted

Gotcha

Should be; the GD1YQ is the United States mmWave + sub6 5G version, while the GTT9Q is Rest of World with sub-6 5G only.
Just make sure it wasn't initially a Verizon phone.

That that is not a Pixel 5a.

Which phone do I have 960U or 960W

Hello,
I bought a used phone in Canada (almost brand new). It is blue 6/128GB variant. In the blue backplate, and in the One UI about phone it says SM-N960U and in both areas it has the same IMEI number. The back glass looks original.
But when I do a IMEI lookup online it says SM-N960W (used more than one site) and the phone is not blocked.
Is this normal?

the user probably flashed U or u1 firmware using patched Odin. which you can revert if the need be. general discussion and guides section has the how to.
but from what i gather you are in the states? so actualy keeping it as U might be beneficial for you...
anyways W and U (or u1) are all the same phone hardware wise. if ure happy with it and its working good then that shouldn't be an issue. unless its not payed off and once it comes to term and balance is not payed, it will get black listed and carriers will stop it from operating in their network.( so check esn state.)

acctualy it will just read what's flashed. so...
eg: if its a true W and someone flashed U firmware with patched Odin, then that app will report it as a n960u because it just reads what firmware resides on it.
IMEI can't be changed by firmware, it can only be permanently change by changing QCN & CERT, which will not work on you Note 9, so far.
I remember there were Xposed modules changing IMEI, but not permanently, just as an overlay.
Factory reset, upgrading to newer versions, debloating your phone.
Of course your real IMEI will show up simply.
You don't have to worry about your IMEI locationg another varian, I had similar experience, sadly their info about my variant was wrong.
Check your bootloader, it can not be faked.

none of what you mention is the subject at hand. he is wondering that MODEL he has.
moreover talking or suggesting about changing imei is not aloud on xda.
he did say that during a imei check online it was linked to apparently a different model than he thinks he has.

What's the sexiest IMEI number on a device you have ever owned? I had one back in the UK once and the last 4 or 6 digits were all 1s.
In regards to op phone being blacklisted, do Canadian carriers share IMEI list with USA carriers? I was under the impression that only the originating carrier could blacklist the device only on their Network.
I only a couple more years ago , there was news that USA carriers shared their IMEI blacklisted numbers. But wasn't aware that for example, a T-Mobile blacklisted device could still work on att .

verizon Volte/wifi calling

If I buy the unlocked from the Google store will Volte and Wifi calling work? I've known in the passed unlocked ones it didn't.
My google store stock unlocked pixel 3xl works with verizon volte and wifi calling. Visual voicemail does not work, most likely because I am on prepaid.
Do you have to do anything special for Verizon volte and wificalling or will putting a SIM in unlocked pixel 5 just work? I am coming from Pixel2 with volte but not wificalling
You have to enable both separately in the mobile network settings. I don't recall having to do anything on the carrier side.

I was wondering about this, too. I just pre-ordered two unlocked Pixel 5s. I couldn't figure out why anyone would buy the Verizon version vs the unlocked. Is it just to avoid doing configuration like this?

You can just roll it into your monthly bill and pay over 2 years. No further credit checks either. Bootloader will most likely be locked forever though so buyer beware if you are into root. And if you wait until black Friday you can probably get a BOGO deal of some sort.

I went ahead and just preorderd the Pixel 5 Unlocked from google. Hope it works especially wifi calling.
Verizon's HD voice, volte and wifi calling work fine on my wifes unlocked Pixel 3 XL and my unlocked Pixel 4 XL. The unlocked Pixel 5 will probably be the same.
Volte and wifi calling work. Hd calling needs to be activated in your vzw account. Wifi calling works but has to have the radio turned off.
Now for the $64 dollar question: vzw has there own version and it seems Google's version won't do 5G on vzw. Why....?

I don't even know how I got involved with this discussion since I don't have 5G where I live but here I am anyway. So.. they actually do mention the Pixel 5 but as you say not the Verizon branded one. Reason being it doesn't matter whether you buy the P5 from VZW or not, they work identical. Here is the exact quote: "However, all U.S. Pixel 5 (model ID GD1YQ) and Verizon-sold Pixel 4a 5G (G6QU3) units will also be able to access high-band millimeter wave spectrum — supercharged throughput with extremely limited coverage." Which should probably put this part of the thread to rest.
As for wifi calling it was stated a few posts ago that you need to have the radio turned off for wifi calling to work. That is not the case, at least on my Google P4. Wifi calling is working whether or not I have the radio on or off. If the signal is good wifi calling is in effect.

OEM unlock greyed out

I have a Pixel 5 bought on eBay as an "open box". The thing's awake and generally no obvious signs of problems. But... I want to root it and OEM unlock is grey. Grrr...
I did a "reboot bootloader" and... bootloader "locked".
I assumed (silly me) this thing would be carrier agnostic. It's not.
So... What carrier uses GD1YQ? Let me guess... VZW
If it's not VZW or someone equally evil, how do unlock the bootloader?
BTW, V11 is loaded.

If oem unlock is greyed out, you can't unlock the bootloader.
I got that far,. Some of what I've found with Google suggests this isn't cast in concrete.
I rooted a Samsung S7 from Verizon, which means "don't so much as think about it". NTL the Sammy is rooted and has been for I forget how long.
Am I even more locked out with this unit? Again, does anyone have an idea about which carrier, if any, is associated with QD1YQ? If I read it correctly, some carriers will unlock the bootloader if the owner shows up, phone in hand.
The GD1YQ model is the Google Store model. It's carrier agnostic. Yea.
AFAIK the bootloader can't be unlocked. WTF
is there an image flashing tool for pixel similar to ODIN? otherwise probably no way around VZW crap.

That goes back a few years. I'm sorry I don't remember the 99 vs 35 IMEI results. I was actually able to get Google to replace my Verizon phone with an unlockable one back then but it took about a month of phone calls untill I found a kind second tier csr. Try this:
Don't insert SIM, but connect to WiFi. Skip through the rest of setup. Once at the home screen, open up Phone and dial *#*#CHECKIN#*#* (*#*#2432546#*#*), you should get a notifcation that says "checkin successfull". Let the phone sit for a few minutes, then reboot and see if OEM Unlocking is enabled. If not, leave it connected to WiFi for a while and come back to it later.

Pixel devices are set up quite differently from Samsung; individual partitions are flashed with images, rather than package files. AFAIK bootloader unlock is still required to use Odin, much as it's required to be able to issue flash commands via ADB.
Wish I'd known that. Drat. Anyway, unloaded the phone for a 4 XL which is now rooted.

Which version is the bootloader unlockable?

Trying to decide between this and the 8t, just needing to clarify which version of the phone has bootloader unlock and root available. I'm in USA and on Verizon. Thanks

ok, are you saying that any pixel 5 bought from the google store would work? And I didn't plan on buying from a provider, just like my current V30 was the US998 which is the international carrier unlocked version bought form B&H photo.
I guess I was asking for an exact model because I would prefer to get it cheaper off maybe ebay, so I wanted to be sure of what I was getting.

Don't select the Verizon version from the Google Store even if you are using Verizon or the BL will not unlock. In addition, I ordered mine from Amazon and was also able to BL unlock immediately. Attempting to save $$ and buy from ebay or swappa will likely be a frustrating proposition as the model number cannot be used to indicate BL unlock capability. See this thread.
There should be a sticky that's just for Verizon that states bootloader can't be unlocked. Maybe that'll stop all these repeating Verizon bootloader unlock threads

The Google store sells 3 models of Pixel 5. Google, Fi, and Verizon. Only the Verizon model is not unlockable. The other 2 are and probably will always be.

VZW is GD9YQ , which is, for sure, not unlockable. DAHIK

That is incorrect, sorry. I have a Google bought Pixel 5 and my wife got the Verizon model on a trade-in. Both are GD1YQ. From what I can understand the only way to determine is to look at the OEM switch after enabling developer options.
When you purchase the phone it will give you the option of the 3. I bought mine from Google for this very reason. People have bought the unlocked phone from Google, received a non-unlockable phone and sent it back. Easy peasy. Just checked the website again. You want the unlocked version... The other screen is my model
Why are you asking this question again? Were the replies in your other thread not enough?
Can the Google Store Pixel 5 bootloader be unlocked?
I've posted the question: "Can the Google Store Pixel 5 bootloader be unlocked?" in rooting threads and gotten no reply. The model number is the GD1YQ
forum.xda-developers.com
Buy it from the Google store and do not select the Verizon option even if you're going to use it with Verizon service.
Personally I bought from Amazon again not specifying the carrier as Verizon and was able to unlock the bootloader.
