I a a retired electronics engineer who developed software and hardware for testing aircraft systems in integration labs. I have had a Fire tablet for several years and last year had to replace my 8.0 tablet with an HD10, because that was what was available. My disappointment is that Amazon's version of Android has locked out many software titles that would be useful to me, so I need to learn how to program the HD10 - 9th generation. I have fount the Fire toolbox and with Android Developer studio, I hope I can make the tablet more useful.

Since the release of the PSGroove open-source PS JailBreak PS3 exploit there have been numerous clones and ports in the works to other devices, which now includes the JailBreak Tiny (dubbed PSGroove Buddy) and a WIP Android port.
xiaNaix of PSX-Scene.com (linked above) reports via TiaoWiki.com that the JailBreak Tiny is under development by the TIAO community, who state the following about the project, to quote:
"We are working hard on the Jailbreak Tiny (a.k.a PSGroove Buddy) for your PS3. You can install open-source firmware (PSGroove etc.) to this USB dongle, which will enable you to run homebrews on your PS3!
We haven't decided on the price, but as usual, it won't be expensive and our price is always SHIPPED price! It will have diygadget/TIAO logo."
An Android PSGroove port is also in the works by Netzke on his Blog and qberty1337.
To quote on their progress thus far: "I'm currently working on a android port of PSj. You can follow my progress on. Look me up on twitter and blogspot. Currently the only real requirement is that your phone be rooted and running an android OS.
Also this is not limited to just phones. You can also use an android tablet. Or any other device you have that runs Android os. It appears to work on my netbook as well. I'm very close to producing a fully working bug free app for this."
"Lol I just got my Android to mimic the 6 port hub. Stage 1 Complete. Stage 2 done. Thinking If I should use PSGroove or OpenPSJailbreak as a base. for stage 3."
Also, spunks310 let us know HERE that another N900 Port is in development as well.
Finally, ps2chiper and atommann from the Shenzhen Linux user group announced they are working on a low-cost and open-source PS JailBreak hardware design, as follows:
"We saw the news for PSGroove and I convinced atommann to use his avr skills to design open hardware for PSGroove to stop pirates from profiting. Our goal is to sell the open hardware at cost to anybody who wants it.
Here is a alpha design created on geda. We will let you guys know when the final design is done and the price seems to be around 3 dollars each."

Well this is a very old thread, but still I am posting in here, so as to be in touch for any future opportunities.
I have been working on Android application development since 4 years, and looking for any such freelance opportunities.
Thanks
My wife has been talking about the Kindle Fire HD to be a Christmas present to our children. Now I'm a Google Nexus phone owner and enjoy the rooted and custom ROM's very much.
I'm comparing the KFHD and wonder if another Android device like the Google Nexus 7 wouldn't come with the same stuff as the KFHD and give me a more open system to fiddle with.
What are the main reasons for going after the KFHD over any other android tablet (considering the KFHD and Nexus 7 almost have the same price point)
Will things like Amazon Prime not work on android tablets? From the Prime web page I only see an iPad support but nothing generic like an android tablet.
I would appreciate any feedback or experience.
I do have an original kindle, but hardly use it anymore, since I can do the same stuff on my Thrive android tablet.
Thanks Jens

Since the tablet is for a child the number one reason is kindle free time. It offers parental controls that no one else does. Google it and find out all the details but that would be the main attraction over the Nexus

I don't think there's a need for yet another KFHD vs Nexus 7 thread. Try one of the existing ones below for a range of opinions...

Please join one of those discussions. If those don't work for you, the Nexus 7 forum has plenty more with the bias slanted the other way.
Hi All,
I'm a newbie to this forum - I have some but limited experience upgrading firmware on mobile devices, but I have a problem I am trying to resolve which I cannot find an answer to, and I hoped somebody could lend their expertise (and sympathy!) to helping me out.
I have an old 2nd Generation (2012) Kindle Fire HD. I don't use it anymore and want to give it to my kids to entertain themselves when we are travelling/on holidays - I really like the simplicity of the Amazon Freetime App which is prompting me to want to stick with the Fire OS.
However, one app my kids use a lot when at home (UK) is the BBC iplayer app. On other phones and ipad, the iplayer gives you the ability to download BBC programmes for one month to view offline. However, it would appear that as of 1st September 2015, BBC stopped supporting this function on 2nd generation kindles and other devices running android 4.0:
(I can't post the link as I am a newbie so it is the first link that appears when you google the question "Why can't I download on Android 4.0 and Kindle Fire 2nd Generation?")
This renders the BBC iplayer app useless when there is no network connection in the UK (i.e. in the car), or abroad as you cannot stream BBC programmes when outside the UK.
What I am wondering is, is it possible to install a later version of the fire OS (i.e. fire OS 3.0) on the 2nd generation kindle? I assume you would need to root the kindle first before attempting to install the new OS, but I have no idea whether the device and OS are compatible. I've searched Google extensively, but cannot find an answer to this particular combination/problem.
Any advice would be truly appreciated.
Many thanks,
Rich
Looking for input/opinions- thanks in advance!
I bought a Fire during one of the Christmastime sales a few years ago and never did anything with it. The box is still in shipping plastic.
I'd like to have an Android tablet for surfing and a few simple games (think sudoku, solitaire, word games).
I watch a lot of youtube videos, so being able to do that is a must.
Also, getting onto my google play account would be nice, hence the Android request.
Seems that Amazon has fallen out with Google of late and taken out much of the cross-connections from the Amazon interface. Is that right?
Not afraid of rooting things- been doing it since OG Droid days.
I'm not really sold on becoming a netizen of the Amazon fabric. I don't have any sort of Prime membership or use any of their services, outside of buying stuff.
I appreciate any and all responses!

Given your description there is a good chance the device has the original 5.x bootloader which means a custom lollipop based ROM (Fire Nexus or Lineage 12.1) can be easily installed and maintained. Both are stable and feature complete. There is no reason to boot FireOS...ever. Doing so may yield an unrootable device that can not be rooted or accommodate a custom ROM. Once FireOS has been banished the device has no affiliation with Amazon other than the name on the back.
Keep in mind the device is strictly entry level: 1 GB RAM, 8 GB User Storage (5 GB usable), 600x1024 low-res panel, etc. Almost any modern phone (and most burner varients) will run circles around a 5th gen Fire.
I'm happy to provide an outline of the steps required which are not lengthy/hard if you remain somewhat skilled in tethered operations and have familiarity with terms such as ADB, Fastboot, GApps, SuperSU and TWRP. You'll also need a suitable Windows host, be comfortable working with file systems and the Windows command prompt. That said, I prefer not to invest the time if the device will remain drawered or sold given its limited capabilities. A simple ask before responding.

Thanks very much for the info and offer!
I would like to try to put one of those two on the device.
I'm away from home this week, so cannot attempt anything just yet.
My Windows machine is a Samsung UMPC running Win7, otherwise I have a Raspberry Pi that does daily work. It does have ADB, but I haven't used it successfully (couldn't figure out the proper command structure on linux).
I'll do some reading this week on what's needed for the effort.
Thanks again!
