Feb. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Motorola Inc., which has lost mobile- phone market share to all of its major rivals, rose the most in almost four years in New York trading after saying it may bow to shareholder pressure and shed its money-losing handset unit.
Chief Executive Officer Greg Brown said yesterday that the Schaumburg, Illinois-based company is exploring its options, including a possible separation of its mobile-devices business.
The announcement pleased investors including billionaire Carl Icahn, who have demanded that the company dispose of the unit. The business, which accounts for about half of Motorola's revenue, lost $388 million last quarter as customers defected to phones from Samsung Electronics Co. and Apple Inc.
``Enough people, from Carl Icahn to many others, have suggested that this is the best thing for Motorola to do,'' said Mark Mowrey, a Laguna Beach, California-based analyst at Al Frank Asset Management, which owns Motorola shares. ``I hope it's not a reaction from the executive side to a lot of the near-term sentiment the company is hearing from investors.''
Motorola jumped $1.11, or 9.7 percent, to $12.61 at 3:31 p.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading, the most since April 2004, after rising 13 percent to $12.97 earlier. The stock had fallen 42 percent in the past year before today.
Citigroup Inc. upgraded the shares to ``buy'' from ``hold'' after the announcement.
Motorola's phone shipments plunged 38 percent last quarter after it lost customers to Apple's iPhone and camera phones from Samsung. That brought Motorola closer to losing its spot as the third-largest handset maker in the world.

Who watches this wonderful program? Very in-depth pieces. Next week they're doing an episode about a high school group that built a kit car that outperforms many production sports cars. I've seen coverage on everything from legalizing marijuana to the failures of forensic science. Love it.
I used to watch it more but haven't in some time after moving from DFW to Vegas. It was better before they cut it down to 30 minutes and moved to David Brancachio. I guess Bill Moyers was getting older, but David just doesn't have the same watchability or followthrough that Bill had.
Hello,
A a Colombian citizen I would like to know what you people think about my country
well I would say don't judge based on TV series as television tend to exaggerate things to gain audience
To be frank nothing really. Why would you even ask that? Each country in the world from Micro to Macro level is contributing to human lives.
Whenever someone reminds me of Colombia I always end up thinking of the Amazon & Colombian Rainforest
Doesn't Columbia have snow capped rocky mountains and is in South America. That's all I know/care about. But I live in Australia which is pretty far away.
I know a bit since there a lot colombians here in spain

i will travel to your country next year
Pablo Escobar ; -)
I don’t know too much about your country. I only know about your football team and Shakira. James and Falcao are my favorite players.
Coffee
To be more precise, coffee plantations that produce crap, okay, good and really good coffee beans (something for everyone I guess).
Not much
But I could imagine the weathers real nice. Being the fact you guys are South America. Aint that like tropical climate are something. I personally would love that Weather year round. Where I'm at its cold about 6 months out of the year, kinda warm about 3 and then so-so for the other 3 months. This time of year is about Winter for us, but actually these last few days have been rather warm actually. Other than that Coffe, Shakira, Cocaine( could be Bolivia I'm thinking with that), and Nice weather are about what I think comes to mind when I think Colombia. I always thought they were warm over there. Didn't know they had snow capped mountains ( you learn something new everyday).

even more of a reason for me to like it.
Love warm weather. I wish it could be like that all year here. I hate this cold part of the year here. Allergies, colds, flus and all that crap. I can't wait till these next three months fly by so it can warm up.
see on televisión is doing very cold in usa
Yup its that time of year over here.
Colombia, well i remember your national soccer team goalkeeper, it was a dude with a lot of hair . Ofcourse, Pablo Escobar and the well known coffee
The only thing I know about Columbia is that it's home to wicked drug lords that make billions and live in mansions and have pet tigers.
I would love to make a visit.. Can't judge something I havn't seen or felt.
Hello. The title pretty much sums it up. I like taking perfectly good working electronic and mechanical doo-hickeys and breaking them so I ca make the better and more suited to my needs. I recently got into 3D printing. I have a 175 gallon reef fish tank and i like playing with HO scale model trains.
Married 20 years in August. I'm the father of a 12 year old and a 14 year old. My son is an avid scratch programmer. My daughter just wants her electronics to work.
Thanks for letting me be part of the group.
