Using Personal Message to ask forum question.

To jasonchiu - using PM to ask forum questions is the wrong way to go about getting information. The idea of a forum is so that EVERYONE can ask questions and everyone can see the answers, that way everyone learns. If you just trawled the members online and PM'd everyone this is SPAM and everyone hates that...
Anyway, it's obvious from your questions that you haven't read much (if anything) because they have all been answered before - I suggest you do some reading then post your questions in the open forum. If you get told the question is dumb then it probably is, but you'll still get some answers or tips.
If you just PM everyone because you're too lazy to read you'll just end up getting flamed - then when you brick your phone no one will help.
Same Here ---
Seems you're not the only one getting PM's with questions that could have been asked in the open forums. I too have been getting some, as well -- although not from jasonchiu.
Folks -- to keep PM'ing users about getting links to files that are already posted on the forums' threads is NOT cool. The links are there. READ THE FORUMS!!!
I don't mind answering questions via PM about a certain app I'm using, or how did I do . . . ?? But, to get a PM wanting a link to something that's already on these threads over and over again -- and with SEVERAL different hosts -- is uncalled for. I will begin ignoring such requests. . .
I, too, am constantly reading and trying new and different ROMs and apps on my device. Reading is where the answers come from. If you can't find an answer, THEN post your question in the appropriate forums. Then -- only if you don't get an answer -- PM someone whom you feel could help you out.
If you're getting PMs that should be open forum, just post them in the open forum and ignore the PM. PMs aren't an excuse for greater laziness, and the forum is a forum after all, ie public debate and discursion.

If you think you get a lot trying being a mod... but im not complaining, i like helping people!
But i do see the point of some people shooting pm's instead of posting in the fora.. some people are afraid of getting flamed.. kinda like whats happening in this topic. I find that most of these people know the answer is in the boards, and they have searched but couldnt find it and afraid of being humiliated. Some people are just lazy, but they are usually to lazy to send a pm as its faster to just post the same question over and over.. what i would suggest is that if someone constantly pm's you then either keep pointing them to the correct threads, or tell them you dont know.

[Q] Why is everyone posting into the Development section?

[Q] Why is everyone posting into the Development section?
it's so extremely annoying, having to filter through tons of junk posts that should be in Q&A or General instead of actual Development question
if this goes one might suggest to enable the option "By Invite Only"
so that only Dev people will can access it, and other XDA members can access it only if invited by a Dev.
The answer to your question is several fold:
- First, some people don't read and/or don't care where they post.
- Second, there are some that think that the Development section is the only place to get answers to questions when that section is for Rom Development only and any closely linked technical conversations revolving around that topic.
- Third, which appears to applies to new users in particular, they google externally to the XDA site for an answer to a problem, their search results drop them straight into the Rom Development forum, they don't quite find what they are looking for and then proceed to post a question where it does not belong.
Our moderators work very hard to keep the fora tidy; however if people will not support that activity by posting in the right place then we end up fighting a losing battle.
I have 3 suggestions to help improve the situation:
- First, that you report any threads that are in the wrong fora so we can move them.
- Second, you all take time out to educate offenders yourselves, especially repeat offenders, on the benefits of posting in the right place.
- Third, people get into the habit of posting in the right fora first time and, whenever required, use google search to see if their question has already been posted and resolved BEFORE posting another thread.
I hope this is helpful.
Kind regards,
WB (XDA Moderating Team)
Do we have enough moderators or need more. I moderate on another forum and would be happy to throw my towel in if needed.
same, previously Mod of the now defund mytreo.net and, legit FlyFF USA MMORPG and some other lesser known forums.
the only problem of being a Mod, you have less time for everything else
Gents/Ladies,
Good quality people with a mature, adult approach to life, good decision making skills,an open mind, conflict management skills, a proven track record of positive help and support of this community and, above all, a great deal of common sense, are always welcome.
We have over 2 million users on here and an awful lot of fora so think carefully before you commit yourselves. However if I have failed to frighten you off please feel free to pm me and we can take it from there.
We have a defined process that we go through. Please be aware that an application does not guarantee that you will be accepted.
WB
PS: We undertook a massive cleaning exercise yesterday in the development forum. You should find it a lot cleaner than it was yesterday.
We still need your help to spot items that should not be in there and report them. We also need you to help implement the suggestions in my post above.

Question about phone use

So a friend of mine know that I play with my phones a bit asked if I can flash his Galaxy Tab to make phone calls. Now I don't really have any experience with tablets just mainly phones. I'm assuming they're practically identical and it should be hard. So he's currently stock is there some special ROM too make phone calls that I have to flash or what? He currently has the GT P1000.
You create a topic in a "questions" forum and title the topic "Question", yeah that makes sense
Topic titles need to be descriptive of topic, please use common sense (and use search)
[EDIT] Thats a bit better.
I just want to add that I found the answer to your question in seconds by using the search button. I could tell you answer but it will serve you better if you searched and found answer yourself.
You shouldn't be creating topics until you have used search as 99.9% of questions/problems you may have will have been posted about already, so stop been lazy and look.
Hint: Search topic titles in this section for "phone".
I agree with you.
Many people think of the forum as a place to ask for questions only.
Like "hey, I found this site where you ask and people will help"
They are not treating it as a source of knowledge.
That's the way society has shifted. Rather than find what we need to know, we'd rather someone tell us.

Forums for programmers?

Hey guys. I had nowhere else to ask this question, and this is kind of relevant to the subject matter of the website, so I figured I'd ask it here.
Is there a forum dedicated to programming with a huge user base and an active beginners section? Some perhaps very well known website that most everybody uses?
Thanks for the help.
Here is a good place to start:

How is that even vaguely helpful? He's asking for something specific, and it's quite a sensible request.
@Bodoma there is a programming forum on here, but it's quite new so not particularly busy. Given time I'm sure it will build up, but there's already lots of people you can chat about programming with and get advice from.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=2188
That forum is specific for app development for the platforms we cover on xda.
As for specific coding issues, get familiar with StackOverflow.com. It's a *very* useful resource that most developers are aware of, even if just to leech from it (nothing wrong with reading and learning )

Ooh, I had no idea that forum existed on here. Thanks for the help, Archer. As far as a preliminary glance at what StackOverflow is, it seems like a great platform that I can use to ask a ton of questions and see what kind of answers I get.
I did Google, by the way, but the results that were returning didn't have communities as big as I would like, since popularity is the only way I can tell whether or not the website is reliable, as I do not know enough about the subject matter to use another method of filtration.
Thanks again, I really appreciate it.

How to make a good question thread.

If you are about to make a new question thread please consider the following things.
Follow the rules.
Because your thread is going to be posted at questions and answers section it doesn’t mean that it doesn’t obey the rules. Every thread/post inside xda forum must be posted according to the rules.
You can find the rules here.
Don’t panic.
If you are panicked and trembling in fear take some deep breaths, take your time and clear your mind, being calm may guaranty an answer to your question. It will sure help you to accept the truth in case your problem can’t be solved.
Search.
This is the best way to get your answer. Your question maybe have been already answered. Seriously, instead of waiting 3 days for a reply to your thread you may be able to get an answer in 5 minutes. Our beloved forum provide as a very helpful tool, the search button.
You searched the forum but nothing? Try again with different key words.
Still nothing?
Try to search on google.
So you found something but you don’t understand the terms that it’s using, google them, I’m sure you will get your answer.
So, you didn’t find anything helpful. You can proceed on making a new thread.
Make sure that you are posting at the right sub-forum.
In our case make sure you have indeed a Galaxy S Advance.
Things are simple, if you don’t own an S Advance and post your question about another phone you will just don’t get any answer and furthermore there is a high possibility of your thread being spammed with posts like “facepalm, this section is for the S Advance”,”dude are you drunk” and such things.
If it happened to make a thread in a wrong sub-forum/section the only way to move it is by kindly pm a moderator or by reporting your thread and ask for a moving.
Your question must be posted at the Q&A.
If you don’t know whether you must post your question at general (Galaxy S Advance I9070 General) or Q&A (Galaxy S Advance I9070 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting) section just post it at the Q&A, all question threads must be posted there.
Bump existing threads.
Some questions just don’t require a new thread.
But, make sure your question is similar to the thread’s you are reviving. Don’t use threads that are for an entire different question. Its up to your judgment to decide what thread is suitable for bumping.
Think about your question.
Don’t be overwhelming, take your time and think about what way is the most suitable to post your question.
Use English.
Before starting typing your thread make sure you are writing in English.
You don’t know how to speak English or you can’t write in English that well?
Don’t worry there is a chance that your question will be answered, if you have read the rules you already know that you can post your question at your native language but its important to add a translation to English. “How to do this?” use google translator, google translator maybe wont provide an accurate translation but it will translate most of the words, and you add the post in your native language as well, because someone from the same country can help you or he can translate in detail what you posted.
Quote:
4. Use the English language.
We understand that with all the different nationalities not everyone speaks English well, but please try. If you're really unable to post in English use an online translator, You're free to include your original message in your own language below the English translation.
Add a good title.
Every thread in order to be posted must have a title. Be smart, add an attractive one, this way more people will view your thread.
Your title must contain your problem in short words, if this can’t be done add a title that partially describe it, don’t add titles like “HELP”, Heeeeeeeeeeeeelp”, ”read”, ”null”.
Also add [Q] at your title.
Describe as much as possible.
90% percent of whether your problem will be solved, depends on your question.
Describe in detail your problem.
You may add the followings:
Are you rooted?
What’s your baseband?
What rom are you using?
What kernel are you using?
Have you flashed any mods/scripts/themes?
Have you done anything to try to solve your issue?
Add pictures if necessary.
Do you think that these informations aren’t needed? They are.
Members of this forum don’t use telepathy; you have to tell them what you have done.
Things you may avoid in your post.
Don’t ask “What’s the best ____”(rom, kernel, theme etc)
Don’t ask something before searching.
Be specific. Don’t write way too big or way too small posts.
Don’t be rude.
Wait patiently for answers.
Don’t pm random guys asking for help.
Don’t spam your question in multiple threads/posts.
Participate in your thread.
Answer kindly any possible question that you have being asked by those who are trying to help you.
Be kind to everyone.
Make them understand what you need/asking.
In any case don’t abandon your thread, people maybe want to know if at last you were able to solve your problem and what way did you follow.
Be grateful.
Thank everyone who helped you, sometimes those who didn’t really helped you may be great help (“in what way?” keeping your thread alive, helping rejecting way of solving and more…), so be grateful to them too.
Important general notes.
Be polite. Nobody will help you if you don’t have good attitude.
Be organized.
Don’t constantly bump your thread. As you problem remain unsolved, I think it’s okay if you bump your thread once a week but you may have problems with the mods if you overdoing it.
Don’t pm random guys.
Don’t demand things, nobody is forced to help you.
That’s it, I hope your problem will be solved.
If you have any comment or correction or suggestion please notify me by sending me a pm.
Thanks.
