Hi there,
I've just bought my Tab S8 and I love it. But there's something I don't get if it'a normal or not: the S Pen battery life is very short, since in less than 24hours of standby, it loses 80% of its capacity.
I've read from Reddit that the S Pen doesn't have a battery, it has a capacitor so what I'm experiencing should be normal BUT the Samsung customer service says that's not and I should ship my Tab to the assistance... Something I would really hate to do.
Any experience/suggestion with it? Thanks!
I've never left my S-Pen off of the back of the tablet for more than a few minutes. Hopefully someone else can report.

And at the same time, do you mean that you anyways keep your tablet turned on? Because, when it's turned off, the S Pen doesn't charge at all

Yes, I keep my tablet turned on all the time. I have it set through the Automate app to email me when it gets down to 25%, and also when it's charged up to 75%, so I can plug/unplug it.

Ok this makes sense and that's pretty smart. So you never tried differently, could you try once?

Me try leaving the S-Pen off the tablet for 24 hours (or the tablet off for that long)? Right now I've got my tablet busy doing something 24/7, so I won't be turning it off, but I just took the S-Pen off and put it in a relatively huge, empty peanut jar so that I don't misplace it easily. I'll check the S-Pen in 24 hours before putting it back on the tablet.

The S Pen not charging for 24hrs (so your tablet could be on but just don't let it charge the pen). And thanks!
S pen does not have a battery. It has a capicitator that stores the power and wear of that is less to happen since it can hold electricity better and does not wear out as easily as a battery would.
Update: I replied to quickly without reading OP post first.
You already knew about what I wrote, so I'm gonna test if mine drains 80% in 24 hours without it being charged or put on backside of tab.

Just place it on the back of the Tab as usual for charge it and press, holding for 2/3 seconds, the button on the S Pen

Ah, thank you! Well in that case, with being off the tablet for over 26 hours, excepting just for a couple of seconds two hours ago, the S-Pen is at 1%.

So it has, as I read from Reddit, a supercapacitor and not a normal battery. And this is its limit.
It's just sad that the Samsung doesn't talk about it and the customer service doesn't know how it works, while calling it as a defective unit :/

You can see charged % by going into s pen settings section under settings. There it shall show how much s pen is charged.
When i bought the tablet the charging draw of the pen ( the big one not in the notification area that one is not showing also) was green. Now it all grey and don't know the battery left.
I don't anything under settings
Ok i went back to light mode and i could see now the percentage when inserting the spen then when back to dark mode and now it is fixed
But still no green battery for spen and not showing in the notification area at the top like before in August
I love the new biiiiiiiiiig notification when docking the pen

I turn my phone on Airplane mode and unplug at night while I'm sleeping.
BUT! When at work and at home at other times, is it bad to leave it plugged in 100% of the time? (I.E. does it decrease total battery life over a few years to be constantly charging.)
Or is it better to unplug ASAP when it hits 100% and let it drop to 20-30% and recharge-unplug-recharge-unplug etc? (If so, how much of a difference would this make?)
And does it matter USB vs AC source? I know USB is half the amps, so this could have an effect too?
Honestly, the battery is going to deteriorate a bit either way over a year time span. It is probably best if you just replace the battery every year.

Doesn't matter. All you need to really be worried about is that you leave it on the charger long enough to get a true 100% charge, and you don't always put it on when at 80%, try and run it down from time to time to 10% type thing.
If you leave it on the charger 24/7 for a year, it will have no real effect on the battery that a year of use wouldn't do, and you might actually come out ahead since battery life times are based on charge cycles... when on charger, as you are asking about, there would be virtually no charge cycles.

[Edit]: Well, my thinking is how BAD could this affect it. Like leaving it plugged in all the time = 50% battery capacity in 4 months type of thing. I guess that is not the case though eh?

To add to what pjcforpres said, I would suggest topping off the battery a couple times a day rather than always letting it run down to 20-30% (deep cycling) the battery. Deep cycling is worse for Li-ion batteries. It causes more heat for longer periods of time when you do charge. I would only discharge completely once every few months to keep the battery calibrated.
My personal habit is to top off frequently. If I'm at home, I'll let it charge to a true 100%, like pjc said, then take it off the charger and leave it off till it hits 75-80% and top it off again.
i can add to this discussion what i've learned about lithium-ion batterys
having it plugged in, while it is being taxed heavily (playing games) and already at 100% is a bad idea, then i discharges and recharges all over the time.
When it isn't full and you plug it in to top it off it shouldn't really do any harm, as long as you disconnect it when it's at 100%.
Emptying it completely also lowers overall capacity, 10% is a good threshold when to charge it.
When leaving it off to store it for a while, store it with around 70-75% in the battery. Storing it fully charged also lets capacity down.

I respectfully disagree with creepinshadow's suggestions. I've read up on lithium ion batteries considerably in the last few years. 10% is not a good threshold to always charge your battery from... that's deep cycling and was great for nickel metal hydride, but isn't good for lithium ion. That said, there's no way for it not to get that low from time to time if you're away from your charger for extended periods and I'm sure it's not going to destroy your battery as fast as one might think.
As for storage, the I charge (or discharge) mine to 40-45% then pop it into the fridge for storage. Read that in a long article explaining how to treat li-ion batteries.
Like you said though, a full discharge for calibration is running it till it turns off then plugging it in while keeping it off until an hour or so after the light turns green.
I've heard many people say that leaving any device that has a battery plugged in won't harm it as long as you're consistant with the charge cycles. Like only plug in your phone when the battery life is >15% and charge it to 100% before unplugging it.
I get into trouble there, because (for instance) say I'm going to be going into the mall for a while and my battery is at 30% and it's going to take me 30 minutes to get the mall (I live in Northern Virginia, traffic is a *****, haha). I'll hook up my phone while I'm in the car just to have extra battery life while I'm away from a charger.
good question, i wanted to know the exact same thing so good to see someone else ask. got the answers i needed.
Look guys... the reality is that this discussion is really just academic. Take my recommendations, for example. It would be ideal if everyone could do what the study I read suggested, but it's not practicable to always top off the battery and not deep cycle the battery frequently. That being said, I'm sure the difference in battery life wouldn't be apparent for a very long time. I can't imagine phone and battery manufacturers haven't thought about this. So...while I've posted my "recommendations" based on that study... just enjoy your phones.
A new battery cost <$50 i'm sure... If you left your phone plugged in over night, every night for a year it probably won't hold a charge better than someone that unplugs in once it reaches 100%..
I personally would rather not deal with always worrying about over charging it and IF i still had the phone when the battery needs to be replaced, just replace it.
In the past 16 months i've had the Touch Pro, Palm Treo Pro, BB Bold & now the N1.. so i never have a phone long enough to even care lol.
I guess that's true. We can always replace the battery, unlike the Fruit people!
But I was just worried that the damage happened quickly. But I guess it's 9-12 months before seeing any real effects anyway.

Hello, i've got today an S3 MINI here with a strange issue, the cellphone when using it normally from all sudden it reboots and starts a weird scenario that doesn't boots up until a charger is plugged, when this happens shows an 75% 80% battery level (aprox) and the device works for a few hours normally and then it drops again.
Tried FACTORY RESET, no go... What's the next step on the issue??
Thanks!

Was the battery indeed, Samsung took care over it, but makes me wonder... How bad is assembling Samsung it's phones...
I just got my Note 4 second hand. The phone (outside of this battery issue) works fine. I am having crazy battery draining. I am running Rapture 2.3, so far I am getting the most battery life out of that. I installed wakelock detector, better battery stats, gsam. I'm no expert, I can not explain from the info these apps are giving me what the issue is. I am leaning toward the battery being faulty. I lean this way because even with the phone off, the phone charges weird. Even on different chargers. The battery charges pretty quick till it hits about 80% (about an hour). After that, we are talking 5-6 additional hours to hit 93%. Only turning the phone on will the battery get to 100%, but only after a big jump. Like and hour sitting at 94%, then it'll jumping to 100%.
WLD says my awake is low, 1013 apparently is a "ok" wakelock (the worst one), my radio seems off to me. Please take a look at these screenshots. Any info you need please ask, and any info you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
Gotta read all the threads that exist already. It is how ur gonna learn. Was more screenshots are needed. Wake lock detector has many other sides to it. Also use better battery stats and charge it with the factory charger and then show us a screen shot of when it hit 5% of all the screens. Screen wake lock CPU wake lock triggers

I just thought that it seems like I get no screen time. Stand by time seems OK. But it's like this with almost no apps installed. Should my radio be running all the time like that?
Radio will always be running if you have cell service. I see no real issues minus the fact that you play a lot of games. Most games crank up all CPU .ur getting a day with phone and that is fair

So today while visiting a friend and doing a couple things on my phone the battery showed 81%. Suddenly it cut off and would not cut back on. I put it on the charger for about 20 mins and it came back on and showed 16%.

I'd be a bit concerned about that. If the battery really was at 81%, and the hardware decided the battery was dead, it really makes new wonder if this wouldn't allow it to become over charged and go "pop"..

Last night mine went from 21% to 15% instantaneously while watching YouTube. Not worried, however, it's going back when the replacements arrive.
So now I get a Samsung+ warning that my device is draining battery faster than its charging. I was using my official wireless fast charger. I'd do another factory reset and let the phone sit for a while before setting it up. Then I'd make do and exchange it ASAP! Keep a careful eye on charging temperature in the meanwhile. I'm thinking of charging mine on a baking sheet so it can't ignite anything, lol! Since you are having such unusual problems, can't be too cautious!

Weird. Mine did it twice, battery life has been horrible and my wireless fast charger wont charge it. Says it's draining faster that it's charging. I've factory reset 3x already. Can't wait until my replacement Note comes in.

A week ago, I posted over in the Sprint forum about this happening with my note 7, though, as you can see, nobody cared, lol. Now that all this battery fire stuff has come out, I'm looking at my phone with a bit of suspicion.

Edit: Haha, I was looking at the screen shot from my thread and saw 4% battery. I thought my phone's battery hand tanked again and was about to drop it before it burst into flames!

Guys,
This is not a single issue, I also had been running into the same battery dying out of nowhere. Check the thread I started

Damn,
I'm thinking forget this mess and switching over to the Iphone 7 Plus. I'm getting pretty tired of figuring out battery issues, debloating etc. I just want my damn phone to work.

Haha, I'm thinking of going iPhone, too, but I'm a little scared to wait the week, and I don't have a phone to use in the meantime.

Who's to say some problem won't crop up with the new iPhone? Maybe you shouldn't rush in. I wouldn't be in this mess if it weren't for the high price and my plan to use the promotions to mitigate that. I always wait a couple of months to buy but by then the promotions would have expired. Anyways, it's done, now trying to stay positive and remember I have a Tab and SD card for my trouble.

We're is the battery pack that Asus showed off. No accessories are available anywhere.
I believe the battery pack comes together with the watch, but is not (yet) sold seperately.

Does not come with the watch. Mine did not anyways.
Yeah it does not come with the battery pack, nor it was mentioned anywhere that it would.
I don't think Asus has launched the accessories yet not even alternate bands, so they all might be launched together. That said, thing charges pretty damn fast so unless you're always on the run, is the battery pack really that significant?

It charges from almost nil to 60% in about 10-15 mins, I think full charge to 100% takes about 30-40 mins.
I think its too soon to call how long it lasts because I have had mine for only 3 days. But it appears to me that 60% of charge should last for a moderate day use, which means 10-15 mins of charging for the entire day (morning to evening).

pretty much this.
I have been using my watch to play music at work for 3 nights now. and so far, I have gotten around 3 hours straight of music playback on the speaker, before I have to charge. so I play music until my lunch break for 4 hours, then charge it. and use for another 4 hours of music when I punch back in.
its a damn champ!

PLaying music ON the watch, or THROUGH the watch to a BT streaming device? I haven't messed with music on mine yet. Haven't had time to play, not sure which apps to use.

Yes I pulled mine off the charger at 6:00am it is 5:00pm and almost dead.
I can not drive home until maybe 10pm and the watch will be dead. "When I go home a 10pm what do I care if it charges fast ?
The battery life so far is not acceptable, 16 hours is not a days use.

So you started bashing the thing right after first charge?
I don't have mine anymore but when I did, it mostly use to be at 50% by the time I reached home with normal use or at least 30-40% with heavy use. Give it 3-4 charge cycles at the very least!

Do you have all the sensors activated? wifi, fitness tracker, gestures and tilt to wake all take up battery because they are constantly running. I disable that because I do not need them but keep always on and ambient display on and get about two days worth.

Sorry for the late reply. I returned mine. Was able to grab the Huawei watch for almost half the price and after using it for few days didn't find much difference in performance from Asus. While the ZW3 is much better looking (imo), wasn't ready to spend double just for aesthetics.
I disconnected charger at 9 in the morning and went to office. Returned at evening 7, it was still 40% remaining. I am satisfied with the battery life. It would easily give me 24hrs battery. All time connected to bluetooth and Screen always on.

Pretty sure 16 hours is the definition of a days use considering 8 hours of sleep is a generally accepted standard even though none of us get that much. Bring the charge cable with you to work and spend the whopping 15 minutes to get another 10-12 hours use.
That all said I would still like the battery pack as well or at least somewhere to purchase another charging ring to leave at my office.
