I have a Pixel 5 here which is stuck with a blinking battery icon with a question mark.
The battery itself is fine and works in another phone, another battery in this particular phone gives the same result. I even swapped the motherboard to another housing and used another screen. Therefore the problem can be isolated to the motherboard. The battery connector seems fine, cleaned it anyways.
Is there a way to get past that screen? Other suggestions / areas to look at?
Since you've already determined the problem is the mainboard, you won't find any additional advice here beyond replacing it. That particular mainboard is not reading the battery for some reason, perhaps the battery controller is bad. I doubt anyone here has information on repairing the board as most of us stop short of disassembling our phones, so your best bet is probably to buy and replace the mainboard. However, unless you have the appropriate low level software tools (such as QPST) to write the IMEI to the new board, you are going to run into more problems.

I have a T-mobile branded Note 4, which I purchased used on eBay about half a year ago. The device worked fine apart from having difficulty finding and keeping a GPS signal - which I didn't mind as Google Maps worked without a problem. In the last 2 days I saw that my Note had problem with charging the battery. The charging indicator would show up, but the "Fast Charge" option would not appear despite being enabled in the settings. Not only that, but the battery would actually deplete itself when charging.
At first I thought that the problem was with the ROM screwing up for some reason, so I went back and restored a backup, but that didn't help. Following that I thought that the issue might be the battery being faulty so I got myself a brand new battery, but nothing changed. Finally I determined that it was actually the USB port that was at fault. I had issues with software acting up and faulty batteries before, but never a broken USB - which is why I never even considered a broken USB port being the reason.
So, now I'm stuck with a phone that refuses to charge and can't even connect to my PC at all. I honestly don't know what my options are at this point. I don't consider myself tech-savvy enough to take the phone apart and change the USB port, but I'm also out of luck, because the phone is rooted and running a custom ROM on it and without a working USB I can't bring it back to its original state. I'm the second owner as well, so even if I was somehow able to restore the phone to factory settings I don't know if Samsung would honor my warranty and I'm on MetroPCS not T-Mobile, so I can't go through them either.
I'm wondering is there any place online that I can send it and get it fixed for a good price or should I just mark my losses and sell it on eBay for a lower price stating that it has a broken USB port?
If I could make some easy suggestions first. Thanks to some good moves by Samsung if you just buy an external battery charger you can swap charged batteries very easily. If you don't want to swap you can install a wireless charging back on your note and fix that right up. As for accessing the phone with USB you could get away with a Micro SD to SD adapter and just put files you need to transfer on that. Files can also be sent over Bluetooth and WiFi with our phones. The only thing that would be very hard to work around would be Odin flashes to new firmware updates. I will say sometimes you can hold it just right and get a connection but you need a stable hand.
For affordable extern charger with two extra batteries I recommend checking out Anker on Amazon. Any generic MicroSD to SD will work so go with what is cheap. As for professional repair? I looked over the daughter board replacement steps on ifixit and on a quick look it seems like the screen has to be removed making it a pain. Finding someone reputable to do it is really the biggest challenge. I hope the workarounds help and that maybee you can find a permanent fix from a reputable repair shop. Check locally, it is a common procedure. Good luck.

You can purchase the flex port (which has the usb port, mics, etc.) for about $10. There is a youtube video tutorial on how to replace it. Watch it and see if it's easy enough for you to do it.
Did you try a different USB cable? You didn't mention that you tried that. Some independent cellphone shops can repair your phone, but I don't know how much they would charge. Sorry If wasn't much help.
This One M7 had been my spare for close to a year. I replaced the screen, camera, and back cover to make it whole again, and everything worked great for a couple months. Unfortunately, it completely died one day while I was using it and the device has shown no signs of life since... until now.
Actually, it still doesn't really show any signs of life. No amount of button holding has been able to elicit any response whatsoever. No charging indicator light either. I've tried leaving it sitting for several months, but this too has not changed anything. I finally opened it up today to check on the battery connection and reseated it. Still nothing.
The one and only response that I do get is recognition on my computer when plugging it in, where it shows up as an "MTP USB Device." Nothing shows up in Windows Explorer though except an empty CD drive.
Any ideas?

you bricked it, maybe flashing RUU can help. if it will not help you can then use JTAG, it can help to flash firmware on dead boards. you can find JTAG on eBay.
Request for clarification

How could I have "bricked" it without flashing anything? The device literally died while I was using it.

Do you have multimeter to check voltage on battery? it could be battery problem, or maybe connector on motherboard is damaged? check for scratches on board (on traces).
It shall be tried

I'll try to measure the battery voltage this weekend. Aren't the pins a little small to test with standard multimeter leads though?
0volt multimeter test
I finally got around to trying to measure the voltage of the current battery with a standard multimeter. I got absolutely nothing, which means that I'm either measuring it wrong, the leads are not sharp enough, or the battery is dead. Has anyone else ever had any luck testing this battery with a multimeter?
Going for it!
I tested another, similar, battery by multimeter successfully, so I suspect that it might just be a case of bad battery (at least). With that and the fact that I had a Galaxy Note 2 battery fail earlier in the year, I'm going to jump in and buy new batteries.
Rather than just trying to go cold turkey and install the replacement, I'll test it with the multimeter and then hook it up pre-install. If the phone powers up, then (and only then) will I go through the massive hassle of replacing it. We'll know one way or another next week when it comes in.
Humongous Tinfoil Catamaran!
Just to follow up, I did end up buying that battery. Definitely not "new," but as long as it's in decent shape, it should do the job. While the multimeter test revealed practically nothing, (same as before) the phone did spring to life with the charging indicator as soon as I plugged it in to power. With that, I've charged it up and will be fully testing the phone next weekend. If everything checks out, I'll start the long & annoying process of replacing the battery and hopefully have a fully-working One once again.
Here's to Change!
FIXED!
Just to provide some closure, I can say that the battery replacement was a success! The vibration motor is totally dead (despite being plugged in adequately and not seized) and the casing took a beating from the repeated re-entry attempts, but the phone is now working once again. I suppose I could buy another replacement back cover to really finish the job, but will probably just leave it as-is for right now.
Hi guys,
I had to change both display incl. frame and battery because a barbell fell on my Mi9. This bent the phone at the place of the battery and completely destroyed the display.
I was able to repair the phone quickly, but unfortunatly I did not glue the new battery. Now I was mountain biking and due to the vibrations the battery was torn from the mainboard and parts of the battery cable got stuck in the connector. I had these parts removed carefully by a watchmaker and he assured me that the connerctor looks undamaged.
But now I have the problem that the phone won't start when I insert the old (minimally) bent battery. It does not respond to any input. Only when I charge it, the LED is blinking slowly and the MI Start logo appears for 1/4 second. This process is repeated continuously. The battery also warms up slightly, showing me that it is being charged and that the connection is basically established.
Can you detect a defect on the board by this error description or is this a "typical" battery problem? Or does this error description look familiar to you otherwise?
Thanks for all suggestions,
Mike
Well I'd say that will be a hard problem to diagnose without knowing what to look for, and I definitely don't know but what I'd suggest so you can rule out the battery problem is to try a different battery in the phone and see if you get the same response. If it works happy days problem solved. If not it is more than likely a main board problem or charging connector.
I see on some sites that users are reporting this and some think that it's related to the security update in March. That seems to be when mine quit charging wirelessly on known-good chargers.
On mine, it intermittently will never handshake with the charger, start to charge then lose connection or never charge beyond a certain point.
Wondering if anyone here is having this problem.
This sounds like the issue people have had with battery connector. There seems to be a faulty battery connector or easy to break small piece. Many have reported this and have had to either fix it themselves, get another unit or pay to get it fixed. Search around you will see what I mean. I haven't heard anything about an update causing this. I have heard that there is a piece that connects battery to phone that breaks easily. I've read quite a few reports of this and how a slight drop can cause it to break and cause charging issues... Read one person put a piece of electrical tape on it and fixed it that way.. idk. That probably doesn't help much. I hope you get it fixed. If you think it's March update and want to rule it out install April update.

Check for a swollen battery. On mine the glass started to separate near the volume buttons. I didn't find it until I took the case off and inspected it carefully. I was able to get a free replacement. There was extended coverage for 4XL battery issues... maybe still available. My issue was not the same as the battery connector issues also documented on XDA.
Erratic wireless charging and swollen battery
This issue is related to the battery, but not the connector issue others are having. About 3 weeks ago I started experiencing erratic wireless charging. Sometimes it would be fine, other times it would just stop for no reason, or not even start...

That was it exactly.
I talked to them and they escalated me to the "product safet6y team" and I'm waiting to hear back from them to see if they will replace it.
I was heartbroken when it lost wireless charging because I really wanted to keep this phone as long as possible and hated that something was broken. It's almost perfect in every way (and no notch or punch-hole.)
I also had the Soli unit go bad and they replaced my phone early on under warranty. I think LG did a great on these as the ODM, but it looks like their component sources were the problems.
Thanks again for the excellent help.
So I was having the same problem. I had to pop the back off my phone. You can see where the wireless charging pad has a spot where it contacts two pins on the phone side. I bent those two small pins slightly upward and put the back back on. YouTube how to get the back off I only used a small pry tool and my fingernail to bend the pins. You don't need to unhook the back. You can do everything with it connected.
Go slow be careful Good luck
I am amazed that nobody has highlighted the actual problem behind all the below mentioned issues. It has been 3 years since I bought this device and has already replaced 3 batteries. Everybody said the same thing that you need to replace your battery. My batteries looked absolutely fine when I removed them from the phone. Not a single one of them was swelled or had low battery health before I started experiencing this issue.
This fix is for all the people who are having following issues with this phone.
1. Your phone is restarting when you're using camera app or any other app.
2. Your phone is restarting when you have maximum brightness.
3. The speaker of the phone is producing crackling sound when the volume is at max.
4. Phone is continuously restarting and can't pass Android logo.
5. All the above problems are not happening when you're using it while charging.
The culprit of these issues is the fuse in the strip of the battery. The resistance of that fuse increases with time and your phone can't get the desired current it needs to run the device smoothly. Hence, the restart issue. PLK will be written on the damaged fuse. You just need to remove that fuse and use a jumper wire instead. ANDD your problem is FIXED!!
I have attached the 2 pictures. Please keep in mind that the picture in which he used jumper wire is of some other phone battery. It is for reference only as I couldn't find one for Nokia 8. You need to do the same after removing PLK fuse in picture 1.
Do the above solution if your battery is not swell when you remove it from the phone or it was working fine before this issue. I have already replaced 3 batteries before I came to know about this fix. I was curious because all those batteries never swelled and was working absolutely fine before this issue suddenly arises with each battery after some time. Now, my phone is working absolutely fine. I Hope this fix will save you guys some bucks
Thanks man! That'll be useful for all of us at some point
Is there any risk with the battery (fire while charging) once the fuse is replaced by a jumper ?

If you can find a new fuse then replace it. Else, the jumper wire will do the same work. These jumper wires are very thin and will break easily when excessive current pass through it. Make sure to use the wire which matches the properties of this fuse.
Thanks, all of the listed issues are also the same issues I've been suffering with my Redmi 9 https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...ots-by-maxing-out-the-volume-and-etc.4520827/ . Before seeing your post I have seen youtube vids and some quora stuff https://www.quora.com/Why-my-Redmi-...hare=63e75d89&srid=iCufI&target_type=question highlighting that the main culprit is the fuse within the battery's management circuit. Glad, I've seen a related xda post.
