Just got it and the sound is terrible HELP PLEASE! - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario Software Upgrading

I just got a T-Mobile Wizard today.
The quality of the sound that i hear in calls is really aweful! The person on the other end hears me ok, but i hear them really bad.
Ive used $20 phones that were better than this!
Its high pitched, no bass, unclear all around just bad and cheap sounding.
Is it a hardware problem?
I have: ROM Version 2.26.10.2WWE Radio Version 02.25.11
Im a Noob, which ROM version do you recommend i upgrade to?
Should i return the phone or is it a known problem? Ive used free phones even that were better than this
Thanks in advance.

Voice quality

Hello guys!
Ive read some reviews on the new HTC Diamond before i bought it, and they said that the sound during calls was crystal clear.
Just one wondering.. my old SE K800i had really good sound quality during calls. But my new HTC Diamond sounds awful and like "in a can". They here me where well, but i hear them pretty bad.
Do you guys have the same problem, or is it me? Ive removed all the plastics

Sadly, "some reviews" are not very objective. Or maybe they meant by "crystal clear" that you hear no static noise
Diamond have moderate sound quality, thats all. Like almost all WM devices (at least all I know of).
Yep. It sounds like the person in the other end is sitting in a barrel. Worst sound quality I've ever had on a phone, sadly.

That many times is related to the network, rather than the phone. My sound is superb.

I did a "blind" test of an iPhone (1st gen) and the diamond when it comes to sound quality of phone calls. The diamond won hands down. I know...not very scientific but the 4 "reviewers" all found the sound quality of the diamond better.
Well, iPhone never actually excelled in phone voice quality either. Not sure why iPhone was brought into comparison anyway, nobody said its better

same here, over gsm the voice quality is better then my past phones.
My phone sounds rubbish compared to my old Artemis. That phone was fine and had a good speakerphone too. The one on my Diamond simply cannot be used because you can't hear what the other person is saying.
The Diamond is probably the worst phone I have had in a long time. I am seriously disappointed and I'm only still using it because I already sold my artemis.
as compared to my previous Nokia, voice quality seems to be seriously lacking in the midtones.
But i'll accept it because i know Nokia phones are phones 1st

Well I used nice Nokia 6233, perfect as a phone I guess, for a few weeks just prior my Diamond, I couldn't wait for to have HTC again, their sound quality is just superb, if you have bad voice quality that's your network to blame and their stupid amr compression.
I wish I can say this for Diamond speaker also but I can't, it's a disaster, but I guess they can't put larger one in this tiny case, so who cares

speaker sounds like crap

anyone else with similar issues?
the HD2 had AWESOME sound, and this phone has a ****ty speaker. this is a BIG NO NO for me as it will lead me to stray from this HD7
sound fix
go into the htc hub and download the sund enhancer app..the settings will definitely improve the sound
Even with sound enhancer it sounds like crap. I'm trying to give my hd7 back to handler.

+1. Calling it crap is ridiculous. It's just too damn quiet. The headphones that come with the HD7 are excellent though. I wish there was a way to make the speakers louder too though...
I wouldn't be suprised if the speakers are exactly the same as the ones in the hd2.
Seems for somethings they are loud and decent, and for others you can barely hear.
It would be nice if they would make the sound volume consistent across the phone.
Must agree that the phone speakers are rubbish, but i guess HTC and MS want us to use headphones with it like apple,
as you know they seem to have copied the best of both apple and android with this device

My iPhone and iPad speakers are loud enough to share a video or game with others. With the HD7 it's embarrasing sharing a video when you can barely hear it yourself and that's with the vol at max and hand cupped around the back trying to amplify the sound.
The quality is indeed crappy BUT has anyone noticed that there just a few days ago there was a Sound Enhancer update? I did it and it sounds slightly louder when it comes to notifications. I am not a fan on playing music/video through speaker and I use my Sennheiser headphones when it comes to listening. And boy turning SRS on it sounds like my legendary N91 ! And that was one of the musts for me.
But, indeed, it would have been cool to have a decent speaker.
i returned the HD7 because of the crappy speaker. gonna wait for another WP7 release with a louder speaker
Yes, poor it is.
When I put it into the pocket, I always let the camera side face outside, bcz the speaker is next to the camera, otherwise can bearly hear the incoming calls.

This is so NOT cool.
People are idiots because they expect their expensive devices to function the way they've been advertised to function?
Really?!
I don't think this is even a case of expecting everything for nothing. There are standards and these companies that want our hard-earned money need to adhere to them instead of spending millions of dollars on misleading AD campaigns; telling everyone that their devices are the best thing since sliced bread, but are too greedy to do any real QA on them because time to market is short and besides, they're really only concerned about the bottom-line.
Quality loudspeakers on a cellphone is one of the least things you should expect from a phone these days. Every smart AND dumb phone out there has a speakerphone. Its not rocket science.
For crying out loud, these jokers even designed to phone in such a way as to EMPHASIZE the speaker grilles on the top and bottom of the phone.
And yet the sound is obviously tinny and pathetic.
And by the way, downloading software tweaks to make your phone work the way its supposed to work right out of the box doesn't make you smart...it makes you the guy who paid HTC for the privilege of doing their work for them.
Congratulations!
Speakerphone on this phone is just plain embarrassing.
My g/f has the LG Optimus 7 and when is on a call on full volume and NOT on speakerphone it's actually louder than me ON speakerphone.
Now how bad is that?

Disappointed with the incredible

So far have been very disappointed with my Incredible S. The phone is from Optus running:
Android 2.3.3
HTC sense 2.1
baseband: 20.2803.30.085AU_3805.04.03.15_M
Kernel: 2.6.35.9-g09f1d1f
Build number: 2.12.980.3 cl37872
I gave my wife my old HTC desire which is working better. Better sound, applications run better. I have had a few complaints from people who have called me that I sound like I am talking through a blanket (quiet). No issues with the Desire.
Talking Tom on the desire works great. On the Incredible S it has very bad lag and does not pick up that I am talking. Maybe once out of 10 times will it pick up that I am talking. This application is no big deal but it is an observation that for some reason my Incredible S is struggling compared to my Desire.
I have tried searching for some Gingerbread updates but have found nothing.
I bought the phone back home in Australia but am in Europe now so no way to return it. I will be back in Australia in about 7 months still within warranty so I am stuck with it for the time being.
Has anyone had similar experiences or are there any fixes out that maybe I have missed?
I have done a factory reset couple of days ago and no improvement was seen.
kind of sucks having an inferior product to my old HTC Desire which runs Froyo.
I forgot to mention that a couple of days ago I was speaking with someone and I could hear them but they could not hear me. Rang them back and same problem.
I have a feeling my microphone must be bad. I tried the voice recorder inbuilt in Gingerbread and the playback volume was pretty low when the volume was all the way up. Also the playback was not crystal clear and there was background noise.
Poor Call Quality and poor playback volume...
Exactly. You are right... I'm facing the same problem... 1st i thought may be the problem with my phone only or because of the network problem. I'm using this in middle east. Then i inquired about the phone and i came to know that 5 of my friends are facing the same problem and all of them are from India.
Very poor call quality and playback volume is also not clear. Having some noises in background.
Really really disappointed with HTC incredible S.
I mailed the HTC Customer care 2 or 3 times. tried all resetting and updates.
No use...
Please let me know if u find any solution for this.

Call quality issues for me too.
The only workaround is to use my Bluetooth headset Mw600 and then the call quality is fine for both sides.
From what I've found on some other forums, the noise cancelling microphone is causing this issue... Didn't find solution to this though.
No issues when listening to music when using headset.

Mines fine, not problems with sound or playback, I too have an Optus incredible S. I have recently flashed it with a de branded virgin rom and I still have no problems with anything. If anything the battery life is alot better after de branding my phone but call quality is great.
same problems, I love my phone but i get ALOT of complaints that people cant hear me!!!
No mic problems here with my IS. Sound is crystal clear in 720p video recording. A friend rated 7/10 of my voice over the call.
Running Gingerbread Android Revolution HD 1.0.1 and MDJ's Unity v1 kernel.
Had same problem that people complained about not hearing me. Was just dirt in the hole for microphone, cleaned it with a needle and now its working great ;D
Sent from my HTC Incredible S
maybe there's just first in the mic hole or you're covering it with your fingers or you have a case that covers it.
I have dust under the screen. It's very, very annoing. I have that phone for a month. I expected that issue from firs week. Sombady else?
No dust under my screen. Still no problems either.
Sent from my HTC Incredible S using XDA App
my call quality is exceptional since updating to android revolution hd.
music playback is great too.
but to be honest, if talking tom doesnt work, you should really take it back for a refund...
Hyper dissapointed after update to 2.3.3!
There were only one time, where a friend complained about bad hearing.
Otherwise, i don't have any problems with the IncS - so far...
sorry to bump a old thread but has anyone found a fix to the talking tom problem? doesn't matter much but still.

[Q] HD7s call quality

I just got my HD7s a few days ago and I have noticed that when I am talking to someone I can hear some kind of background noise. I believe it is coming from the mic on the bottom of the phone because if I blow into the mic I can hear that crackly noise from the earpiece. Anyone else have this issue? Just wanted to check before I looked into getting a replacement.
I read on a different forum that the sim card may be the culprit. Not really sure how that could affect the call quality though. Any ideas?
no I don't have that issue

Have no idea but tons have this issue as well as me.. Can you hear yourself talk when talking to someone?
When I first got my HD7S, it sounded as if there was a noise cancelation issue during my first day of calls that initially sounded like high pitched whistling / clicking. As I made more calls, the sound went away and the call quality improved drastically. Now the quality rivals my old HD2.
Ok, i knw this is off topic but is the HD7S suppose to be on when charging? Everytime i turn it off to charge as soon as i plug it up to power it turns back on. That and the fact i can hear myself when talking is what turns me off to this phone... Well i still have 25 days left to turn it in for something else.

I figured there was an issue with the noise cancellation, or something like that. How long did it take for the call quality to improve? Like how many minutes? I already returned mine and went back to my iPhone 4. Really missing my WP7 lol. Trying to convince myself to wait till after Mango to see what is being offered.
On a side note, does anyone thank HTC quality is going down? Used to have a TP2, and aside from the lame resistive touch screen and old internals I really liked the phone and its quality, especially the speakerphone.

Indeed i do.
Considering the hardware on the "latest and greatest" isnt at all up to par with what is currently available for Android devices, part of me wants to throw half my fortune into Nokia as it will not take much to make an epic WP7 and kill HTC in the market right now.
If my TP2 hadn't have died last week (R.I.P.) I would have waited for this fall.
I hope the Mango update for the HD7S fixes all these issues because I love WP7 so far and would love to keep it. However, I dont see myself getting any other phone running WP7 due to lack of HW and sheer quality. The Gallexy S II is looking very appealing (if it ever comes out this month)
I can't say that i have this problem. I did at one time have it with my Iphone 3G, and my BlackBerry 8820, but it was on and off. Since i have had my HD7 i have not experienced this.
HD7S Noise
For the first 3-4 weeks I had the HD7S at the beginning of each 2nd or 3rd call there was an extremely high pitched squeal that lasted perhaps for less than a second, but nevertheless forced you to quickly remove the phone from your ear. If the Jabra were on for handsfree in the car no noise. It has subsequently disappeared and haven't heard it for a week or two. I have not experienced the "crackling" sound nor a microphone feedback issue.
Anyone else with this issue? I have it and have boxes up my phone to return but if it "goes away" after a while then I may end up keeping it.
Seems to work fine with headphones plugged in, and the person on the other end seems to not hear the hissing, but it's really REALLY annoying.
Did you keep the phone in the end?
I had the high pitched squeeling but am thinking that it only 'goes away' because you subconsciously learn to hold the phone differently to prevent the mic feedback... I'm only on day 3 with the phone but I thought my ears were going to bleed after the first call I made on it!
I hate to revive an old thread, but I just went out and got this phone yesterday. Is there a fix for this out, or am I just to put up with it?
I would like to know if anyone ever found a fix either.

Yeah I gave up. Back to Apple! Yay for me and the iPhone 4S, too bad HTC couldn't put out a quality WP7 device in time.
I just bought my hd7s, and it has the same problem with the microphone, its so irritating that I cannot keep it.
I guess it only needs a firmware fix, not a ROM, and not a Hardware, because how did it pass QC at first place, if its a Hardware issue?
Should we talk with HTC, or AT&T about this?
I also have had the same problem with my HD7s. I experience feed back screeching in my ear on the very first phone call as the handset near my face and it stopped after I got the speaker pressed up against my ear. This would happen quite often. It also would occur many various position like when I would pin the phone against my shoulder to free my hand or when I would place the phone face down on a table to activate the speaker phone. I could also easily induce the sound by arcing my hand a bringing close to the phone. This was very disappointing as the phone is perfect for me in every other aspect.
I exchanged the phone with AT&T for the same model. With this second HD7s I could not reproduce the feedback out of the box. After several days of phone calls I could actually hear a significant improvement in call quality, as there was an absence of the hissing background noise that I would hear before. When I really put some effort into it I find can produce the feedback with my hand by practically making a tunnel from speaker to the microphone. I'm quite certain that this should not occur under any circumstances but I've been able to overlook it thus far because this phone meets my needs in every aspect.
It seems to me that the microphone in this phone is too sensitive. It's a double edged sword of sorts because my wife says the call quality on her end is noticeably better than it has been before compared to my Tilt2.
I must say though, I spent an afternoon with a Titan and that is an excellent phone. Pure call quality, great build, better camera, I had fun with Tango and the front camera, and the even larger screen is great. It just wasn't a match for me because it lacked an Otterbox Commuter case and XDA hasn't cracked it yet-I really need my homebrew apps and custom ROMs with internet sharing. If the titan gets unlocked before my thirty day buyer's remorse is up I may be switching.
Now if you are like me and the HD7s is the best phone for you I suggest that you exchange it for another to see if you have any luck. The fact that this seems to be a consistant problem with those who experience on more than one device, suggests to me that it's a design flaw. However the fact that this thread is only 2 pages long suggests to me that we are the only ones that have an uniquely contoured face that exposes the problem.

[Q] Static noise in calls?

Hey there!
I have recently purchased a new Z3C and think it is indeed a really great phone. However, one thing that really bugs me is a constant and very noticable static noise during calls and only perceivable when using the earpice, not e.g. headphones. You can hear it all the time, especially when pausing the conversation.
Thisis the second device I have that happen, so I would really be interested if everyone else's sound via earphone is clear or if a bit of static is normal. Am I being paranoid?
I switched off all the options for "optimization" in the call settings, btw.
Cheers

Hi,
I have the same problem and it's driving me crazy. First i thought i got a phone with failure so i send it to the repair service but they were convincing me that it's normal. I couldn't belive such a thing can be normal so i insisted on a phone replacement. After writing mails directly to Sony, replacement was approved but guess what - replacement phone had the same issue. I also checked couple of phones in shops and you could hear static noice in earspeaker on all of them. However some people on forums say they can't hear anything so i'm still not sure if this problem exists only in some series. I googled much on this subject and found that Sony had many issues with audio/speaker/volume in previous Z models but it seems it was solved with firmwares. However i believe this is a hardware problem of earspeaker they use. I even found u can order a new one on ebay. All in all, as you said phone is great but this thing is annoying as hell. I tried many other brands to see if they have any sound noise and i can't hear anything. Sad story
Regards,
Nino

Quick reaction to other ppl. Ppl are deaf!
Now not so hot blooded . Happened to me many times. I have (thank God) still good hearing.
Most of the ppl I know do not care, get used or even do no hear this sound, OR are not able to distinguish it.
So even if they tell you, they do not hear it, till you can use their phone and test it next to your, that means nothing....
(This is not my first phone where I can hear something that 99 percent ppl cant hear, even on mine... luckily there is few that can so I know I am not going crazy )
Now the second point is to prove it and if it really is not just how the phone should sound.
Anyways what I tried and made me nervous was the service tests in the Service Menu *#*#7378423#*#*
All of these Primary Mic , Secondary Mic and Earphone tests sound horrible .
Serious crackling, buzzing on the Mics and Earphone, like I am used to from the Phone Call , static noise...
Funny thing however, ppl say they can hear me good and the video records also with good quality. So I do not understand how both of the mics sound so incredibly bad in the test. Well they both go through the same Earphone where I have the static noise, so the earphone could really be faulty, but I never hear the crackling, buzzing cut ofs in the call...
Update: Seems to be normal
Just an update:
I have checked another two devices, different mobile providers as well, and all of them had the same static when using the earphone. No such static when using a headset, though. It seems to be normal. I have checked my old (Xperia P) and there's static as well, although less noticeable due to a weaker/more quiet earpiece.
I also have decided to just go with it, since you can understand everything loud and clear and every other aspect of the Z3C is just that good.
Thanks for reporting everybody. I, too, thought I was going a bit crazy! Enjoy your devices everybody :good::good::good:

I am nowhere nearly silent enough to check it, but will do when I come home this afternoon. Will report back ASAP!
I'd also like to hear your results. I was about to get myself one of these phones today as they are a good price at the moment. But having a constant noise in the background on calls would bug the heck out of me! I don't want to have to use a headset, hate em. I can deal with some problems as ANY phone you buy these days has some problem, there is no perfect phone out there. I'm currently browsing the web and XDA for problems associated with the Z3 Compact, but so far this is a biggy for me, that and maybe the purple/pink hue on the camera in some pictures.
How loud are these noises in comparison to the volume of the person on the other end of a call?

In my case, I can hear the person clearly, still with some hissing. Only in silent passages it becomes really "visible".
Interesting enough I just tried something . I put the headset in a different way on my ear....
I think what I am getting is the effect of when you put your hand on your ear, seashell stuff noise ...
There is a definite hissing, static noise but becomes less apparent depending on the placement of the headset without loosing the quality of the voice, or loudness.

Till now no. I tried the sound recorder from sony, the sound came out ok. Video also seemed ok.
So if there is an issue, is most probably with the Earphone. But as was said in another threads, other phones have this also, to which extent depends on many factors...

I also kept the phone but i find this thing very annoying. Few days ago i talked on a phone in a silent office room and it really sucks, u constantly hear sshhhhh.. Static noise is just too loud. I tried other brands like iphone, my old Nokia, samsung and there was absolutly no noise. I even tried Sony Xperia Z1 from friend and it is also noise free. I would buy earspeaker on ebay and replace current one only if i'd knew that will solve the problem.

I'm currently browsing the web and XDA for problems associated with the Z3 Compact, but so far this is a biggy for me, that and maybe the purple/pink hue on the camera in some pictures.
How loud are these noises in comparison to the volume of the person on the other end of a call?

The static noise does not interfere with the clarity of the received voice. You can hear the caller loud and clear. You will notice the static noise more as the ambient sound around you decreases. I for one have noticed, that I also tend to somehow ignore the static noise a couple of seconds in on a call.

@PAGOT I have tested everything you said and, besides said static noise, I could reproduce the issues you reported with the primary and secondary microphones: a very underwhelming performance of both of the microphones. Cracking, static sound. None of the possible options in the calls settings menu changed anything for the better or worse.
Strangely enough, the sound quality of my calls have been reported to be loud and clear. I also tried Sony's audio recorder, with flawless results Makes no sense.

I do not think I will be ever satisfied with any phone I had.... I found issues on all of them...
Till now no. I tried the sound recorder from sony, the sound came out ok. Video also seemed ok.
So if there is an issue, is most probably with the Earphone. But as was said in another threads, other phones have this also, to which extent depends on many factors...
To answer. Not yet . I have it only for a week. Will see how much I get used to it.

After the new tests I was being confused, again. But, as both of you already put forth, no phone is perfect and I will stay with the Z3C because of the nice features of the device along its very competetive price. I love to forget about charging my phone regardless of heavy usage all day long. The phone stays. Everybody responding here did a great job sharing their experiences! Good work:good:

I also kept the phone but i find this thing very annoying. Few days ago i talked on a phone in a silent office room and it really sucks, u constantly hear sshhhhh.. Static noise is just too loud. I tried other brands like iphone, my old Nokia, samsung and there was absolutly no noise. I even tried Sony Xperia Z1 from friend and it is also noise free. I would buy earspeaker on ebay and replace current one only if i'd knew that will solve the problem.

Yeah, well my wife has an iPhone 5s and also that thing is silent... no noise...
Am currently factory resetting as that will be the first thing they gonna ask me if I did ... I think I will send it to repair.
Even if this an sw issue or new one will have it too, till somebody/enough ppl complain I doubt they will fix it.

Would be nice if you could report if sending it to repair fixes the issue, should you actually do it and remember

I already passed all procedure with repair service couple of months ago, and it was not a very nice experience. The worst thing was that guy in repair service tried to make a fool out of me, like "nothing is wrong with this phone, i don't hear any noise". I mean come on, all people i asked to listen the sound heard noise, and he pretends not to hear anything. However i insisted on repair and then agony begon. After a couple of days they returned me phone with explanation that they made software adjusments and that all is fine now. Yeah sure.. it was the same ofc. I didn't take the phone but insisted on repair again. After a couple of days they said that they replaced earspeaker and that all is fine now. Yeah sure... same thing again. Then they said that they can't do anything more while guys in repair service were looking me like "again this crazy man" and made stupid jokes like "you can leave the phone here if it's not good for you". Total idiots. That really pissed me off and i contacted local Sony support in my country (Croatia, Europe). After exchanging 2 mails with them, explaining what is going on, they agreed to give me replacement phone. Unfortunately new phone had a same issue so i'm now stuck with it. I hope you will not have all this trouble but now you know what can you expect. I also wrote about this at: talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperia-Z3-Z3-Dual/static-noise-on-xperia-z3-speaker/m-p/924466/highlight/false

Can totally understand that ... was more times in a situation like this ...
A safe bet is to argue with the Service Menu tests. Microphone and Secondary Microphone and Earphone and also Stereo Speaker.
Microphones sound both bad...crackling, buzzing, static
Earphone - static noise.
Stereo Speaker - upper one is on and down one is hissing.
They can't argue with that... no matter how much they try... and its their test ...
No matter how much they want ...
(You do not have to tell them , that ppl can hear you nicely , or that video/audio recordings sound better)
Kinda thinking that this is might be a software issue? Heard theories about artificially adding some tone/noise to the call, so you know you are on call or whatever. So the filters or whatever might be set wrong. Or do we really think they would use a bad quality product?
Btw the guys over at CM or other ROMS do not have a fix for this?

On some forum someone mentioned that it could be software gain/ loudness problem. It sounds like someone turned speaker volume up to 200% so static noise is so loud but in the same time voice/music sound is on normal level. As i said in one of mine previous posts, Sony had problems with audio in some previous Z models too and they solved it with firmware update. Hope they will do something with this too - if it's not a hardware problem. Would be nice to have someone from Sony to comment this.
If you do ever find a solution for this or Sony release a fix please let us know. I'm going to hold out on buying a new phone for the time being and put up with my old Galaxy S2 in the hope something happens between now and then. I'm starting to lean towards a Galaxy S5, but I really like what Z3C has to offer, just not the static...
*Fingers crossed* and best of luck!
