Orange SPV M700 - It has GPS? - P3600 Software Upgrading

Hi everyone
I am new here and this is my first post, so please go easy on me.
I wanted to start by congratulating all the contributors on this forum on a great job done.
I’ve just ordered an SPV M700 on Orange and have a couple of questions
1- I need to unlock the phone to be able to use an O2 Sim card in it.
2- I want to be able to use The GPS in the phone.
To use the O2 SIM do I just need to do a SIM unlock, or do I have to do a CID unlock to? Err what is CID in the first place
My understanding is that the Orange ROM has the GPS enabled, am I correct? If so, all I have to do is install software like Tomtom Navigator and all should work, right?
As you can see, I am not that technical and do not want to mess the phone up by venturing into un-chartered territories.
Thank you for any help

1, yes you just need a SIM unlock. You will find the necessary tools on this forum to do this.
2, it seems that the current batch of Orange phones are shipping with the gps enabled rom, so yes just install tomtom.
I think CID stands for country ID (or something like that), you only need to unlock this if you intend to install firmware from another country e.g. the gps enabled Depod firmware. Providing your orange supplied phone has their most recent firmware you won't have to worry about this.

I've just found out what orange are doing. ONLY their Business phones have it enabled.
So if you order the phone on a personal account you don't get the GPS enabled.
However if you order it on a business account you can have it.
The third option is to learn French and flash the publicly available french rom to it.
(That's assuming you want it to be supported by orange themselves)
Else use one of the cooked roms and you're sorted.
EDIT: I've just got off the phone to Orange. The third option above would still be covered by insurance. Though if anything goes wrong it would have to be listed as a technical fault and go back to their free post address.

no, you are wrong, i am personal account, the rom is gps enabled

You flashed it to enable it. The GPS ROM is there but with one of the earlier firmware versions which doesn't enable it. (I got my information directly from Orange. If you were lucky enough to get a business phone sent out to you then I'm extremely jealous (and ask you again to upload your firmware ) but after about 40 mins of bouncing me around centers and giving me lame excuses or saying they were the wrong department I finally got a straight answer out of 2 seperate departments saying this was indeed the case)
If you look on the Orange site:
Business:
http://www.business.orange.co.uk/se...s&c=OUKDevice&cid=1044134008063&extarg1=Phone
It can deliver you directly to your meetings, thanks to it's built-in GPS with Sat Nav from Orange.
Personal:
http://shop.orange.co.uk/shop/show/handset/orange_spv_m700/features
No mention of any GPS is listed.
I know the GPS is there and functions as I've used a cooked ROM to enable it.
Plus as has been pointed out you can freely get the Orange France version of the firmware which has GPS enabled.

no no no, i didn't flash it before enable it, i can use the gps with tomtom 6 when i first got the phone, i need to flash it because i need to make it sim unlock..( i got it on 28/02/07, from the orange shop)
and even the manual with my spv m700, it also mention about the gps.

This is good News
I will get mine tomorrow - hopefully
Alas, I need to use an O2 Sim card though, so I must go down the SIM unlock route. I am in a dilemma between
1- Using the Prof's unlocking solution here
or
2- Paying up the $38 for peace of mind here here

Forget about solution 2

SPV M700
Just to let you all know:
I just spoke to Orange about upgrading my M600 to M700. Vry nice lady ( after three atempts) has confirmed that M700 has GPS receiver built in. It would not show anywhere on Comms but it is selectable once you install SatNav software and it is on COM9.
So I think that anewers the original question.
Happ Navigating

Got my SPV M700 from Orange yesterday.
I went into the favorit > Sat Nav & downloaded Orange's Sat Nav program (It woked a treat - No ROM flashing or anything ) It actually guided me back home.
So yes, Orange UK ROM is 100% GPS enabled.

the-oneil not all are coming with GPS enabled. I know as I've seen 2 so far which came without the GPS working. Must depend on the batch they send out.

i think that depends on which rom version, that one with the following version must have GPS..
Operator version : 19.123.1.615
ROM version: 1.23.61.5
Rom date : 01/25/07
Radio version : 1.30.00.01
Protocol version: 32.63.7020.08H

I didn`t have to enable GPS on my M700. I installed a sat nav system ( Navigon MN6) and it connected by itself. I have a black M700 but on a personal account. The black ones were originally only reserved for new business accounts. Don`t know if that is significant.
I have now just installed Route 66 Navigate 7 in place of Navigon but it can`t seem to connect to the GPS receiver. Anyone help with that? I can only find one way to access the GPS seetings, in Systems/connections/GPRS Settings, and the only option is to change from PAP Authentication to CHAP Authentication. I don`t know what the difference between them is ( I`m not a techie!!) but it makes no difference anyway.
Any advice would be appreciated

Don't confuse GPS (Global Positioning by Satellite) with GPRS (General Packet Radio Service). If you mess with the GPRS settings, you may stop your phone from being able to use mobile data.
The M700 doesn't come with the GPS control panel visible, and generally speaking you don't need it to. Windows Mobile 5 comes with a software patch which distributes a GPS signal to any application requiring it, but some GPS applications can't work with this. I presume Route 66 may be one of them (as is TomTom).
Go to your Route 66 settings, and in the GPS setting options, set COM port to COM9 and Baud rate to 57600, which are the default hardware settings for the M700.
Now go to somewhere with a clear view of the sky for about 10 minutes, to allow the program to download all the necessary satellite information.

the-oneil,
I did the same as you with my brothers Trinity but I have a small problem with the internet settings.
I downloaded a cab file from a forum request on this site but it did not work for me and so I then copied the settings from a site called 'filesaveas' and itwork for me except in one way.
When I try to access my brothers Hotmail account via Pocket MSN I could not do it, however when I accessed Hotmail via Internet Explorer it was ok.
So I have some kind of error in the settings somewhere that still needs to be resolved. I contacted O2 for the settings but they would not give them to me because it is not an O2 handset. The screen asks me repeatedly for 'Incoming Email Password', which is exactly the same one as when I use Internet Explorer to acces Hotmail.
So let me know if you get the above working on yours and perhaps I could copy your settings.
Cheers!
And good luck!

Thanks NeilM,
Trouble is, I`ve tried and tried to find somewhere in the Route 66 menu where I can change GPS settings, but no luck. I`ve been checking through the files using File Explorer but can`t find anything anywhere that allows me to do that. Can you suggest somewhere I might find it or would it be pretty obvious, like going into the main menu in Route 66 when it`s running, and looking for a GPS settings tab. There isn`t one. It has a tab called GPS information but that just gives GPS status info, no way of changing any settings. Guess I`m stuffed!!

According to the Route66 help, it only supports Bluetooth GPS, not inbuilt receivers.
In fact their compatibility list is so old, I wonder it works on any current device

Thats great, thanks for letting me know, I can stop messing around with it now and go for something else or get a bluetooth receiver. The built in receiver isn`t that great anyway. I read somewhere that it was an 8 channel receiver. I have tried Navigon MN6 already with my M700 and I noticed that it`s positioning leaves a lot to be desired. I wondered if it might be something to do with the receiver as I didn`t expect it to be a SirfstarIII. So I might at some point just get myself a decent quality bluetooth SirfstarIII. Any recomendations?
Cheers for now

Orange network Kaiser

I am about to get an Orange network branded Kaiser phone, does anyone know if this is identical in function to the unlocked HTC version ie:- wifi, GPS, not crippled, and secondly is it easy to re-flash the rom to get rid of the Orange branding or is this difficult and could easily cause a malfunction and lock the device.
Thanks
1) wifi and GPS all work fine.
2) The Orange homescreen is deselectable on Today settings, Item tab. You can then install the HTChome if you download it from here.
3) If you really want to flash the HTC rom (or a cooked one from here), I think its easy...but I havent bothered. Other than the colour scheme on the dialler page, its fine.
I have an orange branded kaiser, tomtom is not on it nor is wlm from stock, within an hr I had flashed the htc rom, giving me wlm etc and then installed tomtom from the thread in this forum and installed the maps etc from my other copy.
easy enough to do if you follow the instructions on this forum.
How you managed to get one? Retentions?
Mine was from O retail (as I couldnt talk to retentions til next month)
Thanks for all the info,
The company I work for has 6 mobile phones and we were contacted by Orange about an upgrade so I asked if we could upgrade to the Kaiser and they said yes no problem and no charge for the upgrade.
They are very keen on retaining business accounts at present. Make sure you get free calls between the six of you and a worthwhile data package.
AvengerPenguin,
Sorry to be a pain but I have never flashed a rom before and don't want to mess up can you reply with the link to the standard HTC rom and any simple instructions and also a link to the TomTom software as I have the maps I can use that I purchased for my old Artemis.
Thanks

TomTom 6 Compatibility

Right here we go folks: TomTom 6. Kasier (MDA III) 6.1 (no thrills ROM).
I installed TomTom onto my first Kaiser (standard ROM) no problems and it worked fine until the unit died. I have a replacment device and have requested a new code from TomTom. They have said that the MDA III is not compatible and pointed me to the list of devices which are compatible. What's on there, yes the MDA III, TyTnII etc. I pointed this out to them and they said it was wrong, the device does not work with TomTom and they wont give me a new code until I provide proof of another device (other than the Kasier)!!
Has anyone else had issues or is it TomTom support being lame as usual?
Thanks.
What a load of rubbish. If TOMTOM do not provide support for the HTC Kaiser/TyTN II/Vario III, then why do most Shops (eXpansys, totalPDA, etc.) sell it with a trial version? I'd tell them to get stuffed and send you the code, they're just being idiots...
Wow! They are being incredibly obtuse. It's their compatibility list, it's hardly your fault that it's 'wrong' and in any case I don't think it is. I think you need to speak to a different support person, somebody that knows their arse from their elbow.
Yep, I think I'll give them a call and get it sorted. Watch this space...
Hi,
In France, i encountered worries with tomtom traffic (nearly lost a week
of "subscription fee") because of Tomtom servers failure(guessed, they never admit clearly any reponsability), and followed a kind of farcical exchanges with their support, but they didnt offer me a real kind /commercial gesture(2-3 days of traffic for a week lost !) and they shown themselves arrogant, obtuse, taking me for an idiot.
Not at all paying careful attention to their...paying customers.
Good luck so !
Regards
This just in from TomTom support:
"I have confirmed again with our PDA Specialist and they have stated that there is a huge difference between the MDA III and the MDA Vario III. Since you have the MDA Vario III we are unable to provide you with another activation code."
Odd how they list the TyTn II as a compatible device.
That's ridiculous. I can understand your frustration! Here's the eXpansys Kaiser page, do a Ctrl+F for TOMTOM and it states under the Technical Details:
• GPS
- Internal GPS antenna
- Standalone GPS abd A-GPS mode
- TomTom Navigator 6 Edition (TomTom 6 Taster Edition)
Have you tried showing TOMTOM Support anything like this (which clearly proves that the Kaiser is supported/compatible)?
Yes I emailed them a link to the £500+ package that expansys do with TT6. Lets see what they say this time!
This is a joke, surely:
"The compatibility of your device has been confirmed from our Technical Support Team who are Specialist in PDA products."
Time to phone them and go beserk I reckon!
It's the kind of situation where you want to laugh and cry at the same time. There's not really much left to do apart from argue the toss with them untill they oblige. Good luck and let us know how it go's.
Another update to the saga. I spoke to TomTom supoprt over the phone who were very helpful and said they wold request a change of device code and get back to me. Just got this back from them:
"Unfortunately it has been confirmed again that the Vario III is not on our compatibility list, therefore you will not be able to run Tom Tom software.
The reason your device code keeps changing is due to the fact that device is incompatible.
We cannot change the device code on your account to reflect an incompatible device."
Anyone want to buy TomTom6??!
Finally I'm getting somewhere! TomTom have said they will reactivate my software, but only if I do not request any further support for the device, and do not ask for another code if its doesnt work.
TomTom Navigator
Hi,
The reason they don't 'support' it or refuse to give out the code, is because every time you change the ROM, one that has a new build, then the TomTom server will think you're trying to use their software on a different device and so on, this is especially the case with the TomTom Plus services. I had this problem with my VPA (HTC TyTN) and they would not re-create the code for my TomTom Plus (Traffic Updates). Luckily I knew the old build, so I searched for cooked ROM's that were using that build.
Regards,
Thats a bummer. Why do they tie the code to software, surely they could base it on the IMEI number as that is fixed and does not change regardless of which software you are running.
RE tomtom device code
HI I had same problem with my activation code when I changed rom have found a crack which gives u the code when u try to start maps it gives you device code and u run this software it gives you the activation code. Does it make sense.
RAJ ( I will post this here if needed pls ask instructions are included takes 2 mins)
I am not sure what everybody is talking about
I have ATT tilt with Dutis ROM loaded
and TomTom 6 is working splendidly except may be for the fact that it takes a minute or so to get the satelite fix
but other then that perfect GPS
I would like to find a better software more user firendly
but since I have the maps for US canada and most of europe I gues tom tom is the GPS of choice for me now
Tomtom traffic services
I think the Tomtom support is the worst i've ever seen. For my Kaiser, I know werre the problem is, but don't know how to solve it. When you launch to the traffic information update, the software sends a PHP request to the server including your login, password and this is the problem a serial number that should be your IMEI, but the application sends a wrong number (the first digit is wrong). If I send the same request with my good IMEI through IE I have a message like "enjoy with your promotion". If you know in what file or registry key Tomtom stores this number I think it will not be so hatd to change it to the correct one and find an access to the traffic server.

TT6 on Tilt with official WM 6.1?
I did as much searching as I can handle but could not find a resolution. Tried to install 6.032, get a message saying "Unable to install application. Please update your device ROM to the required version before trying again."
I have TomTom 6 v 6.010 installed w/o an issue. I currently have the standard AT&T 6.1 ROM. The only issue is that it takes 3 to 4 minutes to acquire a signal. However this seems to be a product of WM 6.1.

O2 payandgo settings for Diamond - What's the problem with O2 ??

I can't understand why so simple things cannot be resolved in the life.
I can understand that an operator can decide to don't give some feature, but for what I understood the things should be like this:
1. all UK operators like 3, vodafone, t-mobile offers access to internet for pay and go customers. O2 says not, or that a lot of mobiles do not support it.
Now. I was with polaris/touch cruise able to surf with explorer and use google maps, just problems to update the weather in the main screen. And was ok for me.
Now, I switch to Diamond, the result? i cannot surf anymore and use google maps! Now the answer should be to swith to 3, but I needed O2 and is problematic to switch. Of course I will do if I won't find a solution.
So my question is, have you found a solution to surf and use google maps with O2 payandgo even on the Diamond?
if not, I'm stupid or how is possible that in 2008 a device should be not able to connect to service of O2, I mean, how is possible that O2 says that is the device not supported or that don't support them etc etc, I mean, who is wrong here, is O2 that is doing the possible to don't give this service to us or what? if is so, nobody did something to sign a petition and ask them to do what their competitors do, even more expensively, but with every UK operator is possible to surf, why just with O2 not!!!! Payandgo.
Let me know please.
if I need to flash the ROM, change, upgrade, or whatever you want to let it work let me know.
Thank you in advance,
your disperately,
payandgo... go.. go..
I would check your setting are the same as when you had the polaris/touch cruise, other than that you really need to change operator
Usually for paygo they route the internet using a different APN. This is usually because they block certain ports.
The operators usually say 'this device isnt suported' because their automatic system isnt able to SMS the provisioning to your phone. That doesnt mean you can't edit it manually.
Just copy the connection settings from another phone where it works onto your diamond.
It sounds like the auto setup in the diamond is using some different APN or a proxy, and your old device didnt.
of course I do manual settings... cannot work with the automatic that are into the htc.
I'm waiting some angel here of the forum that can help, for sure a lot of londiners are facing same problem with O2 and have some solution.
the exact same settings work fine on which other phone?
Or are you saying it just doesnt work any more no matter what phone you use?
Htc Touch Pro was working but I lost the settings and with the one found in forums doesnt work the Diamond
so I need settings from somebody that setted already the Diamond that is new, and for sure are the same but I do not have it and I need to find so I can set it manually.
Have you tried these?
http://www.filesaveas.com/gprs.html
Both contract and paygo. Also it really would help if you gave some more information like what settings you using already.
This is my third post and i still have no idea what your exact problem is. Yeah sure you can't get GPRS working in some way, but i don't know what way, and what settings your using - and so the possible cause.

Did HTC or XDA devs publish a spec sheet? Did anyone ask this question before? Did Google develop the art of searching?
There's a LOT on this and if you only look at the specs, you'll know. In short, it does have GPS and it is usable without an external one.

seriously...I means SERIOUSLY???? Have you ever looked at the back of your Tilt where it says GPS?? or did you never read specs on the tilt or are you unable to understand english??

Durrr.....why am I hungry? It doesnt say anywhere on my body that its hungry.
Yes, the ATT Tilt has GPS
It does have a built-in GPS. This same issue threw me off at first too, until I figured it out..
You flamers shouldn't flame the OP. Actual Kaiser and TyTnII owners may already know about the GPS, but the ONLY part of the "AT&T Tilt" documentation referring to GPS is the brief mention of being able to get TeleNav. I know this because I have one. The specs/box mention that it has GPS, but that's all.
Now if I remember correctly, the GPS is COM3 or COM4 by default (unless you changed it in Start->Settings->System->External GPS). I changed mine to COM0 just for the hell of it, and it functions normally.
TomTom should work just fine, set it to 4800 baud, and try it with each COM port available in the options. It sometimes takes a few minutes for TomTom to display that the GPS is in "connected, but no valid signal yet" mode.
If you want to be able to use your Tilt's GPS as an external for some other device, the best thing I've found is GPSGate, but any COM-port splitter should work (as long as it presents a new Bluetooth and/or Serial service)
GPSGate is also useful since you can tell it to log your GPS data to any URL, à la those logging/who-stole-my-phone programs. It can also multiplex the GPS port for use by multiple programs (but I think that functionality is also built into WM and is called the "GPS Intermediate Driver", but I may be mistaken)
Hope this helps!

GPS stopped working for my ATT TILT
my GPS was working fine. my tomtom was working fine, googlemaps was working fine. then all of a sudden a few weeks ago it just stopped working! usually i would use GPS test to get a working signal and then I would run tomtom and it would work. a few months ago it started to take a much longer time to acquire a valid gps signal (it would take a few to 5 minutes). but now it just doesnt find one at all! is there anything i could do to try to fix this? what com port should it be on? im thinking i mightve changed one of the settings unknowingly. please help!

Orange Maps

How do you get this back on, after flashing a HTC rom?
Thanks.
Browse to Orange World on your phone and download the app. Personally, I think its a load of crap myself and with A-GPS, its a license to print money.
Got myself a Touch 3G free from Orange on Thursday, and got stung on data with their so-called "Unique" service, plus we all know what Orange are like for shoving their own crappy firmware on phones, disabling features, and forcing people to gorp at their abismal orange and grey customisation!!
Well, I soon put paid to that, my friend.....
Now running the 2.32 olinex loader, Official European (debranded) 2.33 firmware, with SPB Mobile Shell 3.01 over the top, and TomTom v7.9 for my sat nav. Also got an 8GB card coming on Monday, so happy days are here again...

Yes, do tell. I am running 2.32 I think, from the ROM page here.
Where did you get Tom Tom from? It can't be purchased on their web site as a download. It comes on its own card which is pointless as I've already got one.
If you access the Orange website, it doesn't allow downloading as says not valid phone or something like that ...
Quick GPS?? Whats use?
Hello,
I did HSPL and got rid of Orange Unique. I am unaware of using GPS navigation. Just wanted to know what this Quick GPS is? Does anybody know free navigational software (like Tomtom) which I can install on my Jade and play with it.
Second and very important thing I wanted to confirm, if I am able to install Tomtom on my Jade, will I have to pay my mobile service provider for using GPS?
Sorry about my lack of GPS knowledge, kindly reply.

I think Quick GPS is something that helps get a quick lock on the GPS and then stores that data, at htcwiki.com it says "Quick GPS can speed up the amount of time for determining a users GPS position by downloading the latest satellite information via an Internet Connection"
I do not know of any free directional sat nav for win mobile. Google Maps is free though, but does not AFIK give turn by turn directions.
Co-Pilot 8 is rather inexpensive - have a look at their web site alk.com (but read their forum too before committing to a purchase).
No you do not pay for GPS usage to anyone.
