How often do you (have to?) reset your TyTN 2 - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Just wondered on average how often you all do a power down/soft reset??? Is this cos you have to or just good practise?
I normally do it about once a week due to something wierd like the WLAN not turning on, or I get the WM6 timer popping up all the time. This morning I went to wake the device up and it turned on instead so it must have powered off over night.
Otherwise its all working perfectly, I have do have phonealarm running.
James

once a day for hygiene.

Once a day or so. Wireless will not associate with my AP sometimes after it has gone to sleep. A reboot resolves.

Being a GSM phone you are, for what I will call network maintanance, suppose to restart it at least once a day. And it also being a WM phone, that is especially true. I restart my phone at least once a day, sometimes more. Sprite BU runs in the background at 3:00am everyday so it gets a daily restart without any interaction on my part.
I've own/owned a 3124, 8125, 8525, and now a Tilt. This has been the practice of mine on all of them.

I used to reset around once every week with my Hermes, but with the TyTn 2 I have got out of the habit. I'm using the unbranded Kaiser and I have only once been forced to do a soft reset other times I have done it were because I had installed something that required it. I have had it now for two months and in the first month I did not need to reset at all. Occassionally it will hang but always comes out of it by itself given a couple of minutes.
I have never had to hard reset. So not best practice perhaps, but I do not routinely soft reset (something that my Hermes 8525 could not do without)

Interesting... I've only had the Tilt for a week, but now that I think about it, I haven't been "forced" to soft reset either.

Had for a week ....
Running all s/w in my Sig .... actively using 3G and HSDPA on Vodafone + Wireless and BT .... no forced resets yet.
Paul.

I learned a long time ago that anything Microsoft related like a reboot in the morning.
I soft reset it every morning on the way to work.

I've had it for a couple days and haven't had to reset yet. My 8525 would go a max 2 days before going all to hell. This phone is still just as peppy as the day I turned it on...I LOVE IT!

2i hard-reset itself!

I was sitting in a lecture this morning, and my 2i decided to hard reset itself!!
the main battery was at about 90%, and the backup one was full!
this means that I have now lost my entire phone book and all my text messages! is there any way to recover them? (note to self.. backup more often! )
Now would also be a good time to update the firmware i suppose
Currently Running:
ROM 1.11.00 WWE 01/27/05
radio 1.00.00
protocol 1337.39
extRom 1.11.162 WWE
Which is the best rom to upgrade to?
What were you doing when it hard reset itself?
i tapped the start button.. and it froze.. and then hard reset!
Mine did the same this week. I pressed the Start button at the top and for no reason it did a hard reset. I put it down to me. Maybe pressing another key/s at the same time did it accidentally.
Battery the same at 90% ish
Fortunately, I'd used ActiveSynch a few hours before, but I still lost some texts I wanted.
:?:
Mine started off doing exactly the same thing. To start with it did it every week or so but rapidly deteriorated so that if I was lucky it would last 2 hours before hard resetting (unlucky was about 1 minute). I do hope that yours is still under warranty. I sent mine off for repair and they replaced the main board. (Unfortunately the touch screen has died 6 days later but that's another story)

When my XDA messed up yesterday (I cleaned out the registry, probably a little more aggressively than I should have, and then I uninstalled most of the software that I'd put onto it), it kept on resetting... Only soft-resetting, but about every five minutes, until I actually reinstalled some stuff like Pocket Plus, Pocket Tweak etc, which I'd taken off...
Basically, I think I ****ed up my registry so bad it was rebooting every five minutes because it was referenceing a bad memoryspace or looking for nonexistent files, and I couldn't get any service out of the phone part (just kept on saying no service, I'd put my pin in and it wouldn't even look for a network, even if I went to manual selection)...
... So you never know, it could most likely be a registry issue, even with the hard resets.

How often does your Tilt (or Kaiser) restart on its own?

I've got my new Tilt from AT&T a couple of weeks ago. I love it so far!
However, I do have one concern. Five-six times already I saw my phone restart/reboot on its own. Has anyone experienced this? How common is this?
Additional info:
1. I don't believe this is due to any programs I installed: the first reboot occured on the first day before I had a chance to install anything.
2. There seems to be no correlation with the battery charge level, as I saw it happen with a fully charged battery.
3. It doesn't matter how long ago the phone was restarted: at least one restart ocurred within an hour after I rebooted the phone.
4. In most, if not all cases the reboot occurred when I was using Internet Explorer. This might be a coincidence though, as I have been using Internet Explorer most of the time!
And there was nothing unusual about the web sites when the restart occurred: absolutely no pattern, seem to be a totally random event.
What I would like to know, is this something I should simply blame on Microsoft (or Sun Microsystems for that matter) and get used to, or is there something wrong with my particular unit and I should replace it before the 30-day money-back expires?
Thank you!
I only had one random reboot in my month with the Tilt. I was changing views in SPB Imageer and suddenly... POOF! No problems with reboots before that or since then.
You're not alone
I've had the exact same thing happen to my Tilt as well. I have Duttythroy's big rom and I saw two soft-resets on my Tilt within a space of 6 hours a couple of days ago only. That was the first time and its not repeated that since.
I've had it for about a month or so now. The only thing I have "abnormal" on my tilt is that my trusty old SPB Backup that I've had since my good ol' days of XV6600 does not for some reason perform a backup if I set it to save the backed-up file in the memory card. It just hangs!!
So, I have to backup in the main memory, which thanks to the Godly Tilt is still around 130 megs free after 30 or so various program installs, and then move the file over to the memory card.
If anyone out there has some pointers suggestion for me to resolve this, I'll appreciate it.
AJ
Never seen a spontaneous reboot in 2 months or constant use. I use Spb Backup daily to microSD never a problem, check for latest version is all I can suggest.
Three weeks old unlocked TyTN II with stock WWE ROM. No hangs or resets.
never had a random reset
hey,
I've had my tilt for approx 1 1/2 months and never had a random reset. You might want to take it back and exchage it just for piece of mind. Just my 0.02.
Automatic reset? I cant remember one ...
never happened to me before
I had it happen to me on my VarioIII after only 10 mins! i wasn't even using it as I'd put it in my pocket. I only noticed because i felt the small vibrate as it reboots. I never had a single thing installed. It's never happened to me again though (as far as i know) in the last 4 weeks.
Thanks to everyone who replied! Sounds like it might be a good idea to replace the phone. My only fear is that the new one will have some other issues. But since majority of the users seem to be happy with their phones, I guess it's worth a risk!
Thanks again!
Spontaneous reboot? Never. Are you sure you didn't get one with Palm OS on it?
LOL.
My experience
I have had my Tilt for about 2 month. I have a lot of apps installed and reg. tweaks. I have had one or two freezes that required soft resets and zero spontaneous hard resets. Your situation sounds like mine with my old HTC pda2k - hard resets all the freakin time. Some on that unit were cuased by a defective high capacity battery, some not. I would definitely return it for exchange.
3 Kaisers in a row rebooting!!!
I bought a Kaiser a few weeks ago and have had 3 of them swapped and they all do the same thing. They reboot randomly throughout the day sometimes every half hour. I returned it for a credit and am sticking to my trusted Jasjam. Very dissapointing!!!
Also the keyboard keys are a lot stiffer than the jasjam making it very slow and tiring to type on compared to Jasjam (Hermes).
Cheers.
Htc Tytn II for 3 month and never had a problem.
no problem here
neither me had ever such a this problem .
i think my friend you must check for any 3rd party app you have installed in your phone..do a hard reset first to try it clean of any other software..
if it'snt something like this, you have to return it back to store for send it to service to fix it or replace it with a new one
Make sure the battery cover is completely secure. The only time I had an issue I discovered that the cover was loose.
stock att rom with the bloatware...no hangs no re-starts.
Well, two days ago I went back to AT&T and replaced my Tilt. So far so good: no restarts!!!
Never had this problem either. Using Dutty's V3 final rom.

Soft reset per day?

Have my att tilt for over a week now and i noticed I need to perform soft reset at least twice a day. I am not sure if that's normal but I think it's annoying since I rely on it for reminders. This morning I had to do a soft reset because it froze during the night. I am not sure if I want to use it as alarm clock.
I am using the Dutty's V4 RTM and Radio 1.27.12.11.
Is there something I can do or do i need to get used to it?
Other than that and the bluetooth not working with my infiniti g35, i love it.
No problems for me, never had to do an softreset because of freezing up. Only because of my battery problem.
I soft reset a couple of times a week - just for good measure (after running memmaid or something to assure good operations). Don't think I've ever "needed" to other than during flashing and installations. Using Dutty's V2 (medium), but moments from flashing Q-Mobile 1.2. I tend to avoid things like cubes and S2U and such (justified or not, I see them as unnecessary resource hogs), but am hardly minimalistic as far as installing programs.
Perhaps you'd be happier with a "liter" ROM? I'm still testing to find the one I want to stick with. That being said, I love the V2 medium - just looking to appease my inner flashing addict.
i love it when ppl use cooked ROMs and then complain about issues...No offense to anybody. I used cooked ROMs on the Hermes as well. Not on my TILT. I do not have to reset the Tilt, but when I do is because a third party program freezes.
And also remember, any program that you install, might cause issues, because crappy programming...It's not necessary the OS...
Using Qmobile 1.2 for about a week. Might have had to soft rest once or twice. Not too bad. I think mainly because of Navizon though...
I never really had to soft reset due to crashes, but i normally do softresets after configuring registries that require soft resets. Otherwise, its on 24/7!!
I soft reset when I find my phone getting a little sluggish. It's like a computer, I figure, and I restart my computer multiple times a week. Either way, I don't think there's any harm in soft resetting too much.
I find I have to soft reset fairly often. Probably every day. I am using stock ROM but have installed a bunch of stuff, so I am suspicious of that.
I do have a Cube installed, and am considering dropping it off. Not sure if that will help or not.
I find that there are a lot of posts about various quirks on Tilt. And I will say, "Gee, that doesn't happen to me", and of course next thing you know it does. Some of the stuff is just me still learing how I can get myself into trouble. For example today my sound quit and I couldn't hear music from WMP. But it turned out that the problem was that sometime I had hit that little speaker at the top which opend the volume control, and before getting it closed I had deactivated sound. So even with volume at 100%, no sound. Interesting...
Anyway, as some said, I suspect combination of installing stuff causes issues. The more you install the more likely it will be problematic. But then, for me anyway, one reason I have this unit is so I can put stuff on it to make it productive. But then, after all, it is a version of Windows, so after a while, probably need to reload from scratch (hard reset).
yea most likely its the stuff u put on the stock? o men do some upgade.
I do soft reset about once in 14 days. I usually do it when my available RAM approaches 40 MB. Don't remember it has ever crashed on me except for a few times when usiing opera mobile.
Actually I after using the TyTn II for 3 months now I am starting to believe that the instability issues we relate with windows mobile are becoming more of a myth than a reality
I guess I soft reset too often? I do it about 15 times a day. By choice, though.

just hard reset, it may help
I normally do a soft reset every morning when I disconnect my Tilt from the computer, since Active Sync kicks in every so often during the night and drains the RAM by running. . . but it's still between 50 - 55MB, even at that. Other than that, the only time I've had to soft reset is when an app would freeze up -- which isn't very often.
most of the times i soft reset is after installing a program or vice versa when it tells me it needs to do so...rarely will i have to do it cuz it froze or whatnot
I'm in exactly the same boat as bapssystupr3m3, I only soft reset it when an installed application tells me i need to do so.
Other than that, I frequently make sure I close all the apps that are just running in the background and my kaiser appears fine.
Only soft resets when schedule back up comes up daily. Other than the scheduled backup, no resets (so far *knock on wood*).
what's wrong with resetting the phone? It doesn't hurt..
I'm using the stock HTC rom, and can only remember one time when something locked up on me (a third party app) and I ended up soft-resetting, the only other times I've done it have been after installing/configuring new things. I guess in the normal course of things I maybe reset... once a week? Sometimes more, but never for any negative reason.
I'd say the uptime on this device is at least as good as my last Symbian-based phone, and the myth of Windows Mobile being unstable is just that - a myth.
I'm using the stock Tilt rom with just a few things installed and have to reset most days. Yesterday when I woke up I discovered my phone had crashed at 11:30 the previous evening when someone had called me. Today when I woke up an hour late I reset the phone because my alarms hadn't worked nor were the notifications for messages...
I soft-reset once everyday (in the morning). It's part of my daily routine now. I use ClearTemp program to clear everything (start menu, cache, etc.) and then soft-reset using that program as well.

How often do you soft reset your X1?

The poll is self explanatory.
I'm just curious. I more or less have to do mine daily. Sometimes I can go a day or so or more, but not often before something doesn't work properly.
about 2-3 times/day avarage .... im not sure if mine's the only one with problems like this but its hell ... changes with roms a bit but always has problems ...
Once a month about. Maybe once a 3 weeks.
I do it daily, because I want to. I feel compelled by my inner voice to do it.
daily...,,...
It depends on navigation use: Without daily navigation I can go more than a week without a softreset. But I guess Navigons MN7.x leaves something in the memory that causes problems afters some days -but only at the next start of MN7.x not at other software. But because I use MN7.x nearly daily, a softreset has to be done every 3-4 days.
i hardly ever do - except today when for some reason the vibrator was stuck on
Ooops. My mistake.
I actually misunderstood the question thinking of beeing forced to do.
Well I do it once a week basically...
once a week
It's done automatically every night with SPB Backup. But before I bought this software, I had to soft reset about once a week.

Same as this guy
I soft-reset the X1 whenever I see a need to. Which is probably about once a week - as soon as I start to feel the device is slightly slower than normal.
Though there was once I was so bored in class I randomly went to soft-reset my X1 - and my friend was staring at me like I was crazy.
I have an external battery charger, and keep a spare charged battery with me. When the battery dies I exchange it, kind of like doing a rotating system with the battery. This shuts down the X1, does that count as a soft-reset? Hah

I do it once a day withouth necessity rather it's just to kill those apps on the back
Resets Depend on what I'm Doing
The only time I have to reset my Xperia is when I'm messing with it and it hangs up. If I simply use it and the programs I've installed, it almost never needs to be reset. I'm hard on my device, as I supposed many of us are.
As a matter of procedure, I reset it once in the morning whether I need to or not.

Kaiser on last legs, anyone else?

The kaiser was probably one of the biggest pains in the asses I've ever dealt with, and probably won't be doing anything HTC for a long time to come.
It's a 8925 tilt that I got right when it came out. Got the unlock code from att and been using my tmobile sim ever since.
Sometime last year, the speakerphone died.
Then, earlier this summer, the phone just up and quit one day. Would give the tricolor screen and say there was no ROM.
Great. Switched to my backup $10 nokia and it's been great.
Decided to try again yesterday. Updated to the latest radio. Tried one of the cooked up 6.5's. Already been on hardspl 3.56 since last year.
And it's been chaos. Initial bootup froze up at the HTC screen. I gave it 20 minutes, and then did a hard reset. It booted up, imported my sim contacts. Then it went on to setting up the internet, and froze at 0%. Reset it, and it freezes at the HTC screen again. Again, hard reset. 10 minutes later, I'm finally booted and setup. Install Google Maps. Works fine. Few hours later, I pull my phone out of my pocket, and the screen is lit but displays nothing. Buttons are lit up too. Frozen again. Reboot it again, and it's like I hard reset it. Had to initialize the phone again, reinstall Google Maps.
Wake up this morning, and again, blank lit screen. Right now, it's seemingly functional, but I haven't done anything to it. From power on to booted takes roughly 4 minutes. Absolutely unacceptable.
Reflashed it, and it's behaving no differently.
Anyone else experience this before?
No, mine has been perfect in all aspects. I would suggest trying another HardSPL version & a standard HTC WM6.1 ROM & see how things run.
You could just be unlucky & have a bad device but it could also be due to bad ROMs & HardSPL version.
