Which GPS map to buy - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

I seem to have various options for upgrading the TomTom software that came with my Kaiser. Problem is I'm not sure which options are viable.
I can buy European map for £39.95 from here (but will it work with the version of TomTom that came with my phone?)
http://www.tomtom.com/products/maps...af29it42pga3imj7kdldbt6&D=23&Language=1&P=327
I can buy the software and maps for £68.95 from here (do I need this upgrade to my software?) (I was directed here from the HTC site)
http://www.expansys.com/htc/p_htc_item.aspx?i=149139
When I downloaded my free map I was given a code and told that it could be used to obtain a discount. I could not find any options to do this on the HTC site:
http://www.europe.htc.com/en/workplay/tomtom_buymaps.html
Is this discount now discounted?
On a slightly different topic, I would like to log my position. The TomTom software I have does not let me do that. Is this because it is a cut down version of the full product (ie, not just reduced map coverage) or do I have to buy a different product that supports this functionality?

TomTom 2.24 vs. 3

I ordered the TomTom + Wireless GPS about a week ago from MobilePlanet and they sent me vesion 2.24 of the Navigator. I quickly discovered that a newer version 3 exists.. I tried to contact TomTom about an upgrade but they say my product code for Navigator USA is not eligible for the upgrade to 3... can anyone shed light on what's going on here?? thanks!
Yeah, you've been ripped off. Get a refund and buy version 3.
I have v3 but never used the v2 so not sure of the differences.
being ripped off depends on the price you paid.
personally I would not give much for a version 2 today . . .
I have no experience with TomTom before 3, but everyone who has claim there are major improvements (stability and map quality).

There are some relatively small differences. I would not be able to explain why they have called it version 3 instead of 2.5.
I guess it has something to do with the map format which is not compatible between 2.4 and 3.0.
All the overlay files (freeware add on to TomTom) seem not to be version specific.
My advice is: Get refund and buy version 3 to allow you to get next update at cheaper price, else stay with version 2.4 has it is great.

UPDATE - I just called MobilePlanet to send this back and get version 3 and the customer service rep told me that TomTom has not released version 3 to USA distributors as of yet and that was why I got version 2. They informed me that serveral customers have called regarding this and they were aware of it. Any thoughts? Has anyone purchased version 3 from a US distributor?
Mobile Planet responded correctly. Version 3 is not available in the US as yet. Rumors that I've heard/read are conflicting: TomTom may release v3 in the US or they will wait and do a v4 release everywhere. I'd suggest emailing TomTom & see what their response is.

I've looked at the US version of TomTom on their web site.
The printscreen of the US version are of version 2.xx not 3.03

the main problem that I am having is that once in a while the software will show me floating around on the screen in random positions.. it's doesn't appear to be readings from my BT GPS receiver (TomTom model) because I can soft-reset the XDAII and the software shows my correct position again, but I must perform a soft-reset and can't just exit and restart Navigator... anyone else have this happen?
There is NO Version 3 for the US and there isn't going to be. TomTom are moving towards a common navigation engine that is already available in the PalmOS, GO and Smartphone platforms.
The next release will be a PocketPC version of this to replace TomTom 3 in the EU and TomTom 2 in the US.
There is no release timeline for this but expect news before Christmas.
Jameskk, I had that problem when I had bluetooth tools installed, once I deinstalled it everything was ok, do you have the latest gps driver for your version?

TomTom discontinuing Navigator ?

Through conversations with a few folks I've learned that TomTom is apparently contemplating ceasing any further development on any products for PDA's. They are apparently no longer supporting Nav6 nor will they provide any further map/poi updates for Nav6. They had apparently begun development of Nav7/8 but have suspended that project until a go/no decision is made.
This decision is apparently being driven primarily by significant bootlegging of maps (their primary source of income with Nav software).
I have gotten this info second-hand, but believe it is reliable. Has anyone else heard anything along these lines?
Interesting...
I had to call them to help me activate my maps on my fourth replacement tilt. In the course of conversation, I asked about new maps. And the answer was there were new maps but not for navigator 6....they were developing navigator 7 and were in the process of determining "viability." When I asked if that meant they were thinking of discontinuing it, he backpedaled and said they just want to make sure that everything works with such a wide variety of devices to support - palm, symbian, windows mobile.
With what you heard, it sounds like it could be a possibilty. Shame. It's a good program...
I agree, it's an excellent program and I get a lot of good use out of it, I hope they continue to upgrade and improve it. The ONLY thing I don't like about TomTom Navigator 6 is that it doesn't have Text to Speech, it would be nice to hear "turn right on Yuba Street then turn right on California Street" instead of just "Turn right then turn right".

They released new maps this past week for the Nav6 as well as all their other products.
Until you see this on their web site it is just someone's rumor.

Do you know if those truly are new maps? After installing TT on my Kais and downloading the free map for my metro area 5 days ago I've found a large number of outdated things including 1 year old streets not in TT and POI's 1 to 4 years out of date. I'd think that they'd want the map they give you for a trial to get you to purchase from them would be the most up to date.
Can anyone tell what the exact version is of the new maps? From what I can read about them is that they are version 6.75 but they done give the build number. I already have version 6.75.1409. Just wanting to know if they really are newer maps.
So use Google Maps.....
It doesn't have text to speech either but it is FREE! and I suspect the real reason TomTom are no longer going to support the PDA version. Very powerful - search for "KFC" and it will find all the nearest with clickable links to websites, phone numbers, driving directions from current position, from an input address from a contact etc. Everything you could want when you need to top up on Kentucky Fried Chipmunks.....or whatever you need to find.
Of course as it is "live" and downloads maps on the fly you better have an unlimited data plan. But it is cool driving along in Satellite View!
HINT - the CAB is not seperately downloadable. You have to download it direct to your PDA - last time I did it was about 1.5Mb. Though once you have the CAB in memory you can back it up to your PC.
These are not new maps - they are the same as what i downloaded several weeks ago.
This has also been confirmed at the following site
http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=400322#400322
"TomTom have today announced the availability of the v.7.20 maps from the Map Shop as well as the v.8.05 maps for the GOx30 users.
All existing map versions that were previously available from the shop have now been replaced with the new v.720 maps for all PND’s except the GOx30 series. GOx30 owners can now buy new map version v.8.05. Anyone contemplating a map purchase is advised that the maps are device dependent and therefore it is important that you select the exact device model you own to ensure you receive the correct map.
The 7.20 and 8.05 maps are based on TeleAtlas 2008.01 data.
The 6.75 maps will remain available in the Map Shop for NAVIGATOR 6 users and Automotive units (Eclipse, Daihatsu, Toyota) Note: Rider and Rider 2 users can now buy the new v.720 maps (premium maps) from the map shop."

The one big disadvantage of google maps is that it DOES require that live connection. If you are in a poor reception - or no reception area - it is hard to get those directions. For me, i would rather have it sitting on my device and just be dependent on the satellites....instead of BOTH satellite and cell tower.
I don't think the have stoped developing v7 because the new HTC Daimond comes with v7 intergrated in the rom. This can be found in several artical on XDA.
There is much to like about google maps. As you mentioned, they are constantly updated, fairly accurate, have tons of useful info, allow you to click on POI's for info, to call POI, or link to POI website.
Unfortunately it doesn't have turn-by-turn capabilities (at least that I've ever seen) or allow you to keep maps on your device (besides costly when roaming, I seem to always find areas without cell service). It doesn't determine your direction of travel with an arrow, only shows a dot. These are the biggies. Some of the route planning and other things that TT or Garmin have are also useful but missing from Goog. Google's love of learning anything and everything about people for their own profit is also a bit disconcerting. Them knowing where I've been, where I am, and where I'm going is perhaps too much.
Telenav only works in the US, Garmin is coming out with their own phone to avoid the pirated maps/revenue issue...
Darren Griffin from PocketGPS forum has written the following statement
"In Amsterdam last week I quizzed TomTom on this and whilst their future plans for PocketPC were vague, they did suggest that piracy had been major issue and 'if' any future releases were planned they would most likely only be in partnership with manufacturers. "

Google
Google does not offer voice guidance or turn-by-turn maps. However, Google does offer a traffic overlay which is free (TomTom charges) and does not require updates.
Oddly, it seems to take TomTom about 10 minutes or so to get a GPS lock. Google (with GPS turned on) seems to take less than a minute. I have never understood that

I called and the 1409 is the latest version of the map.
Tech support indicates that they have no plans to discontinue the Nav6.

Mine (Kaiser w/ TT) almost always gets GPS lock within about 30 seconds of starting the TT app. This is in US including MN, CA, NY, and GA.

Yep, same here, TomTom has a lock and is showing my location in at most 60s when I turn it on while driving. If I'm sitting still, it's less than that.
The Tilt does not seem to have much luck getting a signal when shielded from the sky, however.. Even sitting in a restaurant near a window I've found it completely unable to get a signal but it locked on in <15s when outside. I always mount my Tilt on my 'grip' mount on my dashboard so it has a reasonable view of the sky.

Do you have aGPS enabled? That will enable you to get a lock even inside of buildings, or anywhere that has little or no view of the sky.
I hope they do move to navigator 7 at some point as I like the idea of things like map share that are avaliable on the go 720 tomtom models.
Looks like there will be TomTom 7 for Procket PC.
There is a news item on MoDaCo website.
http://www.modaco.com/content/pocket-pc-professional-news/268462/tomtom-7-coming-to-pocket-pc-soon/
i get a quick lock on tomtom, but poor refresh updates from the GPS chip, so its laggy as.
TOMTOM also dont support the kaiser, TYTN II, or the OEM Branded ones, so getting support is a pain (even though my bloody phone came with tomtom on a CD!)
My GPS Reception jumps all over the place too. very unreliable.

GPS voice software...

I have Google and WLS installed on my tilt, and i do like them. However, what options do i have for a GPS software that provides voice directions?
Not wanting to spend a bunch of money here, but if my options are limited, i would still like to hear them.
Thanks!
I use Tom Tom. It gives rather good turn by turn directions.
Hi,
I have tried TomTom V6 and V7 and also I-Go8.
All 3 are good products and these are my own 'key points':
TT6=Legal,out of date maps and won't get better.
TT7=Legally grey for the app ,but you can buy legal maps-which is what TomTom have always charged for-modern maps (01.08 if V7.20) and is likely to be so for a while yet.
I-Go8=Legal (but you may have to import it as it still is like hens teeth here)
,modern maps (01.08),likely to be supported.
TomTom (both)-basic interface, runs fast on older PDA (WM2003+),good routing.Instruction format=in 100m turn lef, turn left (at exactly the correct time),instructions at roundabouts are concise.
I-Go-'prettier' interface and possibly a little more powerful,3d landscape can be of use but 3d buildings are in my opinion a gimmick,a little slow on less powerful PDA,sound routing, shows the next 2 manoevers, with 3rd party skins easy to modify options.Instuction format=in 100m take the 3rd left, take the 3rd left about 30m from turn (this is the last instruction),display lags by about 1 second so this is logical.Instructions as you approach roundabouts are in my opinion a little verbose
Choices-I keep swapping between the two as they are both strong products and I can't really decide which is 'better'
Do they work-Yes
Are they up to date-tt6,no-tt7 yes,and I-go yes
Cheapest-TomTom
Nobody can give you a definitive answer on the 'best' software,so pay your money and learn to live with the foibles these programs all have.
Clear as mud?
Ashley
do you get the tomtom software if you buy an actual tomtom? I assume you cjust buy the disc, but does it come with the actual gps unit? My dad bought one ways back, and wondering if he got the software with it.
I think the s/w is hard wired into the TomTom devices, but can be updated by official downloads
Ashley
okay, i don't have a cd, but i do have North America maps which is what i want. So, that leads me to my question, is there some generic installer that gets the tomtom shell on the tilt phone?
I tried a few on the wiki page, and when i truy to install the exe, i get a message on the phone saying Incorrect Rom. So, i assume i need a cooked ROM on my phone to install the ones on the wiki.
I checked tomtom website, and see nothing.
I think you are starting to skate very close to discussing illeagal/unapproved software, please be very careful.
Ashley

Satnav compatability with Diamond.

I'm aware that this has been covered in a few other threads and many of you have GPS software running on your Diamonds already. Many of you also seem to be having problems.
I noticed today while looking at the PDA/Smartphone offerings from ALK (CoPilot), Garmin and Tomtom that the Diamond is only listed as being a compatible phone for ALK CoPilot - thay have actually brought out a dedicated edition of the software to take advantage of the phone's high-res screen.
So, those of you using Garmin Mobile XT and TomTom Navitagor 6 software, how did you get on with setting it all up? Especially Garmin Mobile XT, as it seems to only come on an SD card?
(Incidentally, I have seen posts referring to TomTom7, but on their website I can only see verison 6, so I'm referring to that).
I'm only just after putting TomTom7 on mine. It works a treat (admittedly having trouble with the GPS reception, but the actual application works fine!
Took a while to get the install working right, mainly due to not knowing where to put the maps folder (NB: It goes on the ROOT of the Internal Storage)
I maybe would like to try some others, just to compare, but prolly like many people, after buying the phone, don't want to be shelling out more notes for the S/W!
Would be good to get a list of what works and some install instructions!
And a list of the best GPS tweaks to get the most from it!
Where did you get TomTom7 from? Its not even for sale on the UK TomTom website.

Has anybody tried TOMTOM IQ on diamond?

Tomtom IQ suppose to be very clever, according to their website. It should know and direct you according to how busy the roads are. So it might suggest you different route for different hours of the day.
So wondering if anybody tried tomtom IQ on htc diamond before?
cheers
is it a whole new prog or just maps? got bored reading about it on the TomTom website
as far as i understand, its the program, rather than the maps. it gives alternative routes if your usual route is busy at that time.
http://www.tomtom.com/page/iq-routes
is it available yet, and if it is, what for?
may only be a 'built in to the unit' release
looks like it is only for the TomTom Go 930 and 730 units
In fact, I think it's just a feature implemented in some TT devices (x30 units, I guess). Hopefully it will be present in the next TTNavigator (maybe v.8? There are v.8 maps already for v.8-powered devices! )
I am not completely sure what does that mean.. so if it is the case, then can we not somehow install it to htc diamond? do we basically have to wait for it to became available for "other devices"?
i think we have to wait, looking at the screen shots, it is completely different setup to TTN....
