Tilt keyboard and Fn+Space function - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Hi,
I just got a new Tilt (unlocked of course!), and after using it for a few days I noticed that there is no easy way to type (with hardware keyboard) symbols as it is posible with HTC phones. I mean in HTP branded phones, if you press Fn+Space you can switch between diferent international characteres, but on the tilt that does not work. Any one know how to get the tilt to behabe like the other Kaisers?...
Thanks...
BTW... I have been looking everywhere with no luck, hope someone has a solution...

Exactly my problem. The Tilt works great, but this little problem I also want to fix.
I've founded here the German Input Cab. Yes, that fixes the vowel problem. But then EVERYthing from a german input is given, what means that very many signs you get by pressing function and a button are switched. What I of course do not want. ;-)
So, the best would be to somehow only get an easy access to the vowels.

In the Windows folder there is a file called sym.txt (sym.0415.txt?) in which you have symbols that are written when you press Fn+space.
If you install SDKcerts.cab (maybe some other programs would also help) you can edit/overwrite this file so that it suits your needs.

Master_H, so you where able to have the tilt recognize the Fn+Space?... please let me know how you did it... that is exactly what I'm trying to solve... you mention German Input Cab, with that did you where able to make Fn+Space work?... Thanks!

jfgarciamex, yes, I was able to have the tilt recognize the Fn+Space, with the German Input Cab. But then everything from the German keyboard was taken. When you have a qwerty you will not be happy with this. Like me.
milujciesie, thanks for your hint, that works. You can also do this with other text editors.
My problem now is, that my hardware keyboard doesn't react correctly anymore when I press Fn+Sym. Then just the normal virtual keyboard pops up but not anymore the symbols. I've searched already but couldn't find it: Does someone have the normal (AT&T) input cab? Thanks a lot!

has anyone found a solution? This is driving me crazy. I type a lot in Spanish and I can't get the right characters unless I go into symbols, which is a real pain!

No, I still have no satisfying solution. There are only two options:
- qwerty with a cab that allows quick access to the vowels etc.
- a new keyboard mat with qwertz for german / the fitting one for spanish.
Option 1 would be the best. Isn't there anybody out here who can help us?

Try Tilt keyboard Fix .... search for it
The cab file is almost 6 months old!

yes, dwny, and I know this fix already since I have my Tilt. But that doesn't solve my problem. With the german cab (for qwertz) you can press "a", "Fn" and "Space" and you get an "ä". That's what I want.

i guess nobody types with accents among developers...hehe
My keyboard works well...just missing the Fn+Space combination. I'm wondering if that could be that the sym.txt file is missing? Will search the windows directory and report back..
EDIT 1: I went back and installed the original ATT Rom. Well...it just happens this one doesn't have the Fn+Space combination working either! You just get space. So I see two options: have a non Cingular/ATT layout and be able to use Fn+Space (and go guessing were each of the Fn Characters are), or have the Cingular/ATT layout and have everything work fine, but not be able to put any accents.
I guess someone smarter than most should be able to come up with a new layout...

Solution
You will just have to adapt the file sym.409 und Device\Windows. You just can put behind the letter (f.ex a) what special sign you want in which order (by pressing fn space).
F.ex. for letter a
aäàâ ...
If you need a sym.409 file for a german qwertz keyboard, let me know.
By the way. Your cannot change it through the handy, as the file is signed. You will need to modifiy it and the copy it with totalcommander or gsfinder to the windows directory.

I had this problem with my french keyboard, and i found on this forum the right cab which fixed the problem for me
The thread i used was the following one : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=345426
Have a look and try, the french cab worked for me while others failed, maybe the spanish cab will solve your problem

Koumala, problem is a different one. You either use the ATT TILT layout with all the FN keys working fine but the FN+Space combination, or, you use a different layout (e.g. English) where the FN+Space combination works, but most FN key are mapped incorrectly. Your proposal to change the sym049.txt file assumes the FN+Space combination works. But that's precisely what we're trying to solve.

If I understand correctly (which I think I do) this is the solution to your problem:
Disable XT9 (KaiserTweak, or directly via your registry), soft reset, et voila..
Fn+Space is back to its old self

Disabling XT9 won't fix the problem. I don't even HAVE XT9 on my phone, and Fn+Space doesn't work.
Furthermore, the sym.0409.txt file in the \Windows folder ALREADY has all the symbols that should be possible using Fn+Space, but they don't work!
I'm also interested in some way to get this to work without losing my other symbol keys, 99% of the time, I'm writing in English, but as santiargy said, that 1% of the time I write in Spanish sucks because I have to go into the symbol pad to get any writing that makes sense done!

Try MagiKB Lite

You are correct - disabling xT9 is not the answer.
Here is one fix - MagiKB Lite. With this keyboard extender, "You can assign up to 4 additional letters to one key, greatly extend its functions". By pressing and holding any key, you can cycle through all letters or symbols assigned to a key, and you can customize the available options for each key, just like sym.txt did for Wizard (and Hermes I think).
I use MagiKB Lite to have ([{ and }]) assigned to their respective keys, en-dash and em-dash added to the hyphen key, backslash added to the forward slash key, and on and on.
For Spanish, you can have n-tilda assigned to n, etc.
I hope this may be a good answer for you.
I am attaching my personal custom layout for the Tilt - you can easily edit it within MagiKBLite to add your Spanish letters.
Remove the .txt from the file, and place it in \MyDocuments\MagiKB Lite. There is also a Treo750v.lay file that you can look at to see how the custom keyboard files are constructed.

for a spanish qwertz keyboard
do you have a sym.409 file for a spanish qwertz keyboard please?
thank you a lot

I am using this, I have to say it is much much better when using the hard keys. No need to press Shift or Control anymore! Like typing on the Treo...
It was a chore setting up the key mapping, but it works perfectly afterwards.
Let me know if anyone want the key map to Att Tilt.
I have been looking for the key mapping forever for this app
please post the keymap for the ATT Tilt for the MagiKB 1.1 program. I came from a Treo 750 to a Tilt and it was the one program that I missed using (did NOT wanna set up all the mapping - wasn't quite sure how). Thanx
Looks nice really.
great program - please post the mapping
+1 post the mapping!!!
Att Tilt Keymap
Well, here is the key maps.
Please note, I am using a ATT TILT, with OEM ROM, without the Cingular addons, but if yours is not a TILT, then you might need a corresponding key map set up if the hardkeys are different from the TILT.
Also, I set up the key mapping so that only the keys with LETTERS will be used (when holding down, or double clicking). That means, for the symbol "," and "." and "$" you will still have to press the Fn key.
I can always change the mapping to whatever suits you, or you can do it yourself....
Install MagiKB first, then move this .lay file to your My Documents\MagiKB Lite folder. Then you can select the key map from MagiKB program.
thanks a lot - a great help
Could you please re-post the tilt keymap download link. Other link doesn't seem to be working. Thanks for the hard work on it.
EDIT: Sorry, got it. Thanks again.
you mentioned there's a difference between the Tilt? Would there be a difference to stock Kaiser then?
I have an ATT Tilt, so I don't know if the keyboard layout is exactly the same as an Unbranded Kaiser (I don't have a unbranded kaiser to look at).
If the keyboard layout is the same, then the key map should work.
Nevermind. It works.
Does anyone know how to capture the key for the left arrow/comma on the tilt? I would like to map it to the comma, but it's not in this key map file.
Adding additional key mapping to MagiKB ?

Solved/ignore; Can you explain how to map the directional arrow keys and their Fn counterparts? I like the way MagiKB simplifies capitalization and the Number Pad especially, but would like the WIN key mapped to "CTRL" - makes copy, cut and paste much easier.

OMG, this has got to be the best tip ever!
Entering items such as the "?" were always the one thing I hated about the keyboard (I came from a Treo 750). Now thanks to you I LOVE the keyboard
Thank you very much!
Thanks again!!
No problem, I came from a Treo 650, so the Tilt's keyboard bothered me too. This makes the transition to a Tilt so much smoother.
About the key maps, I am currently away from the country and unable to play with the keymaps, but I will be back home in 2 weeks.
I might get a chance to play with it here, in which case I'll post an update.
Sorry!

I was using this layout and program and LOVED it. The only problem is that after upgrading to WM6.1 (official ATT), The layout will no longer appear, when I go to select a layout.
Any suggestions?

Yeah because the layout was stored in My Documents\MagiKB Lite in phone memory by upgrading to wm6.1 you deleted that folder with the layout in it.
Download the layout again and put it to the above-mentioned folder.

SOLVED!!! - HTC WM6.1 ROM : Missing "Fn Space" function?

Hi folks
I've just upgraded to the new HTC WM6.1 ROM update and, to my horror, found out that I'm unable to type 'ó','á','ð', etc. using the Fn Space combination.
I've tried to apply the 'Tilt keyboard fix' and 'TyTN II keyboard fix' aswell as going through the forums digging for a solution, but to no avail
Does anyone know a solution for this?
Thanks in advance!
in my signature under scandanavian keyboard fix
Thanks for your pointer!
I tried installing both the "Scandinavian keyboard.cab" and "Nordic Keypad Mapping.cab" but all I get is a " " (space) when I do the Fn Space combination
I'm not sure how to install the "XDA_JCEspi2005_Sweden_Input_Kaiser.zip" file. I tried to rename the .zip to .cab but the installation was unsuccessfull
sorry never noticed, but yea must have been a bad download. I will try to see if i can get it again
surely you would get more help posting this in the ROM section of the forum

Did you remember to soft reset after executing fix cab?
Sorry if I'm posting in the wrong section, I just figured as this was a official update from HTC that it would become standard within time
I've tried to soft reset between installing the cabs, but that didn't help
SOLVED!!!
I finally found a solution for this!
I'm not quite sure if all these steps are necesary as I'm not going to be retrying this fix as it finally works after days of pulling hairs. Here's what I did:
1. I installed gullum diamond keys and gullum Dansk Diamond keys. Did a reboot, disabled everything in "XT9 Settings...", did a reboot.
2. I changed the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/HARDWARE/DEVICEMAP/KEYBD/CWSLayout registry value from '1' to '0'. Rebooted.
3. I downloaded duttythroy Disable xt9 and rebooted.
As a side result this also fixed the following issue HTC WM6.1 ROM : Add Recipient to SMS..
Hope this helps anyone stuck with the same problem
I guess the "disable XT9" is the only part needed in case you are anly misssing accents. I changed the registry manually (two keys), soft reset and it worked

didn't work for me
I have been looking in the forum for a solution for the Tilt keyboard. Everytime I ask, someone usually responds pointing me to the Tilt Keyboard Fix cab, that was posted by Taurus Bulba.
However, installing that fix, results in the keyboard being mapped with the ATT layout, by enabling the CWS layout in the registry. This makes every key work as it should, but it kills the Fn+Space combination.
The Fn-Space key combination, typed after a character, changes it to others, as per what is defined in sym049.txt (or whatever symxxx.txt file you have in the windows directory).
For example, if you type an "a", press Fn+Space, you get an á, then à,â, etc. Same with all other characters. This, as you can imagine, is important for those that type in languages other than English, that require accents. And for those that want to use characters not in the keyboard often (like the Euro sign "€" or the british pound sign, "£", the ç, etc.).
I think the issue is with the CWS layout (CWS being Cingular/ATT). That layout doesn't have the Fn+Space in it. The Hermes keyboard had a blue "á" and "ü" written on the top left corner of the Space bar. The Tilt doesn't have those. In fact, if you install the original ATT Rom (no need for keyboard fix there), the Fn+Space combination doesn't work.
The only way I've seen to get Fn-Space back to life is NOT to use the CWS layout that comes from the ATT Keyboard Fix. Using any non ATT Rom will allow you to get Fn-Space, but at the cost of getting many of the other Fn keys mapped wrong. For example, the ! and the @ are swapped, the ; gives you a %, and so on.
Sounds like there should be a new keyboard layout that is 99% like the one resulting from the keybord fix (CWS layout) but that adds the Fn-Space combination to it.
Any suggestions?

Unfortunately, the proposed solution didn't work. I think the issue is with CWS layout (CWS being Cingular/ATT). That layout doesn't have the Fn+Space in it. For example, the ! and the @ are swapped, the ; gives you a %, and so on.
Didn't work for me either.
Tried both ways. By manually and with that .cab. Both resulting same problem.
I can use those accented characters, but now I can type only numbers with diamond keyboards. :-o If I change registry back to the original. I can write and everything else works, but those accented in harware keyboard.
Worked for me

Final and simple solution
Dear all,
I fiddled around with my old TYTN (Hermes) and none of the solutions found in the net really helped. While it was quite easy to fix the QWERTZ / QWERTY problem on the hardware keyboard (letters Y and Z inverted) the Fn+Space problem was a bit harder to solve. None of the various cab files or other hints really seemed to help.
So here is what I did to finally fix this:
1. copied a sym.0407.txt into the Windows directory using ActiveSync
2. applied the following registry settings:
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\keyboard layout]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\keyboard layout\toggle]
"Hotkey"="1"
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\keyboard layout\Preload]
@="e0010407"
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\keyboard layout\Preload\1]
@="e0010407"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Layouts]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Layouts\e0010407]
"Layout Text"="COMP IME"
"Ime File"="compime.dll"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Layouts\e0010409]
"Ime File"="compime.dll"
"Layout Text"="COMP IME"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout]
"Active"="e0010407"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\OEM\Qwerty]
"Layout"=dword:00020407
With these settings I have Y and Z assigned correctly and the Fn+Space working as well. I guess this will not only work on the TYTN (Hermes) but also on the TYTN II (Kaiser).
Kind regards,
DAC324
Attached are the two files needed (sym.0407.txt and the registry settings file). If somebody could explain me how to make a CAB for them, I will gladly do that, too.

Word Completion does not work!

Hi there, i use the block recognizer a lot to compose SMS messages and on my old touch the word completion feature worked like a charm. However, no matter what settings i use on the diamond (e.g. suggest 3 words after 1 letter etc.etc.) this feature doesn't come up!!
Does anyone have the same issue, and any fixes for it?
I got the HTC touch on the first day it came out and haven't had any problems with it whatsoever. My diamond has been full of issues since day one!
Maybe stupid...
Did you check in the settings if word completion is active?
Yes, the option is definately switched on....but no luck in actually completing any of my words!!
I have the same problem with my Spanish ROM using the "standard / classical" keyboard

You are correct. I complained about this in an earlier thread. I am using the latest ROM and it does not work.......
Doesn't work for me either!
Doesnt work for me either. On my Tytn I choose to create a new message and when I start to type the contacts name for the To field it lists the contacts for that letter so I can select the correct one. Then for the message it will suggest words as I type, this is exactly what I want on my Diamond. I dont use T9. The nearest I can get on the Diamond is if I have "Word completion in ABC mode" ticked in the T9 Settings box then word suggestion works but it doesnt suggest contacts for the To field when creating a new message, instead it suggests words. This is not how I want it
Same problem....
I have the same problem, but only when I use the Block recognizer, using the keyboard works fine, but I'd rather use the block r... so when I need to list the contact I place the names and when I press send the phone give me the choice to select the right contact...
you need to disable xt9, then autocomplete will work again
Use something like KaiserTweak or Boinger's diamond config to change

Nope it does not work perfectly. After that change, word completion only works for letter recogniser, but it does not work for the phone keyboard, compact qwerty, anything that uses the phone keypad.
The HTC keyboards all use T9 word completion, this thread was for the MS keyboards/input methods.

xT9 and eT9 at once- causes problems- how can i remove one completely

i am running the latest 6.5 21202 ROM and whenever i start writing someone name into the new sms to: field i get two different predictions- the bottom grey htc style prediction(eT9?) and a little white box predicition(xT9?) near the name- if i press enter the phone freezes up, and if i backspace at all the phone freezes.
is there any way to remove one of the two predictors?
disabling T9 only removes predictions in the body of the text message, even with installing Taiseer's xT9 disabler. also i have disabled T9 with advanced config and diamond tweak.
the problem is that when entering a name they both still appear- yes this is a very useful function, but only if one appears- now that both appear the phone freezes whenever i choose from one
I had this problem at first too...but for some reason after I soft reset the phone a few times the problem's gone. It's one of the weird 6.5 bugs...perhaps because the ezinput sip keyboard isn't made for 6.5 yet? not sure though..
hopefully your problem is solved too though!
hmmm, solved, but not perfect
so no, soft-resetting did nothing for me. but i used regedit and searched for T9.
i found the reg entries for HTC's bottom name predictor (eT9) and there was one referring to install directory i simply changed it from "/Windows" to "/" and now the program cannot load it. and now there is no more freezing and only one predictor the microsoft white box name prediction.
this is good, great in fact- however, it could be better
the HTC eT9 predictor is better because it takes one keypress instead of two, not a big deal, but if anyone has alot of spare time on there hands- finding a way to disable xT9 instead of eT9 would be much appreciated.

In Post #4 ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3576500&postcount=4 ) of my ROM thread there is a cab file to disable XT9. Not sure if this is what you are looking for but it gives the drop down style word suggestion.

Norwegian Apple Wireless Keyboard settings and how to make your own

I have a Norwegian Samsung Galaxy Tab and Norwegian Apple Wireless Keyboard.
Norwegian letters "æøå" on bluetooth keyboards are not supported out-of-the-box, so I searched forums without much luck. I found some helpful threads and decided to solve the problem and share the solution. Others can make their own modified keyboard settings quite easily using the same methods.
Using "adb logcat" I found that the keyboard layout files used were the "Broadcom_Bluetooth_HID.kcm.bin" and "Broadcom_Bluetooth_HID.kl" (might not be the same on other devices - CHECK!). I had the "adb logcat" going while connecting and disconnecting the keyboard, so that I could see what keyboard files were used by the apple keyboard. I made a backup of these and started modifying them, with success.
DON'T BLAME ME IF YOU DESTROY YOUR DEVICE WITH THIS!
I offer no guarantee this will work for everybody!
HOW TO USE:
"Broadcom_Bluetooth_HID.kcm.bin" --> /system/usr/keychars/
"Broadcom_Bluetooth_HID.kl" --> /system/usr/keylayout/
I did this simply by copying the files with the app "Super Manager".
Make backup first. My backups are included just in case.
HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN KEYBOARD SETTINGS:
I used a hex editor called UltraEdit on pc to change some symbols in the .kcm.bin-file, and I used the "KeyTest.apk" from github to make out all the scancodes and used them when editing the .kl-layout file in Notepad on the phone.
NB! If you use the hex editor, make sure you always change one symbol at a time and always do backups for each little change. Whenever I did some change that the system didn't like, it would turn to using the "qwerty.kcm.bin" as default, then I could use the backup to make it work again.
This is my first attempt of a sort of contribution to this great forum after
using it for years. Hope that others can use what I have learn't to make
their own settings. I have attached my original and edited settings files,
and a picture of the keyboard with scancodes.
I would be so happy if you could provide us with a swedish layout aswell as I am not so into programming!

Nice find, qsarklam!
Could you post some info which hex key is which character, and how to identify individual buttons in the hex editor?

+1 ...........
I have exactly the same issue, need though the German layout. Can anyone from you help me with this?
I would also appreciate the Swedish layout so count me in that one aswell.
Thanks!!!
Spanish anyone?
Same issue, but in Spanish. The wireless Apple Spanish-ISO keyboard mostly works, even the Ñ, but some letters are not right and accented characters like áéíóú don't work. Also, the caps lock key LED doesn't light.
I tried using HexEditor on my rooted Samsung Galaxy Tab to edit the binaries but I can't figure out what maps to what so I'm stuck.
It's just so frustrating to have that nice keyboard sitting around. Would be a waste to have to buy and carry two keyboards, one for the iPhone and another one for the Tab.
To make matters more complicated, I like running the Galaxy Tab's Android UI in English, and I have a Mac so I can't run the suggested bin editors for Windows.
One would think that with the OS X being Unix-based and Android being Linux-based it should be as easy as copying a keyboard layout file from the Mac (or the iPhone) to the Tab, but it seems there is no such luck.

I've got one apple wireless keyboard also, and i'm remapping it. Does your Fn button works? How did you manage to find the scancodes from the F1, F2 ... keys?
Are you able pass the lockscreen with the keyboard? without touching the screen i mean.
For those who are not rooted or just don't want to mess with a hexeditor I've got an app that takes care of this and allready supports a lot of different layouts:
