A coleague of mine has an unlocked 8Gb iPhone. I have a TyTN II.
Colleague: My iPhone has a great display with great touch interface
Me: Yeah, your display looks like crap by the end of the day. Look at mine. Oh and mine also has a great touch interface
Result: Colleague looks perplexed
Colleague: Check out how my iPhone plays videos!!! (He proceeds to show me a music clip....HOHUM)
Me: Check this out (whips out TyTN II, opens CorePlayer, and plays Mission Impossible 3)
(Also opens TCPMP and plays Duran Duran Rio FLV video from
youtube)
Result: Colleague not only impressed, but he had to wipe the drool off his chin)
Coleague: OK, OK, my iPhone has a great camera...so he proceeds to take a sample
picture of me.
Me: Starts camera app, starts to take a pic of him...first AUTOFOCUS fires ...then CLICK...perfect picture of him.
Result: colleague now looking positively flustered.
This carried on for about half an hour.
Every time he whipped out an app or function on the iPhone, I was able to trump him.
Then he said his iPhone has 8Gb of memory!!! WOW I said my TyTN II can handle up to 32Gb on a microSD!!!!!
Then the absolute caveat was when I said that I have access to tens of thousands of games and apps for my TyTN II which I can install and uninstall at will.
I can sync with Outlook etc etc etc ad nauseum.
Eventually he just shook is head and walked away visibly shaken!!!

i will say that the kaiser is a great phone but it does have its somehwat really annoying and extremely slow moments
never had an iphone but from what i have played with it is really fast at loading apps
Did you also mention that you can Sim unlock it to any network and change the firmware .. and the thing still works ... even better than before.

LOL...Never. Firstly most iPhones are locked. To unlock them is very tricky. That means you cannot just install 3rd party software.
Even if you are able to use Coreplayer on the iPhone, Mine is perfect...so I don't think that I will be drooling. hehehehe.
I will maybe drool over the new Xperia SE X1!!!! My wife is waiting for them to launch here in South Africa, then she is getting one as she is a huge SE fan, having a W900i now. She also uses my old KJam.

Why don't WM deserve a good interface? I have paid for Coreplayer, and I was severely disappointed in the UI. Its confusing, and very finger-unfriendly. If there was a trail I would probably not have ended up buying it.
Why don't you do exactly the same UI on the WM devices?

That _IS_ the new CorePlayer Mobile UI being demo'd (internally called v2) for all our mobile OS's. It is scheduled for release in a later 1.3.x release as we are still adding alot of functionality to it. But its 10x more usable then the current UI.

Uhm, you must be smoking crack.
1. The iPhone's display is both crisper (dots per inch and resolution) and larger. It's larger with more pixel density at the same time.
Additionally, the iPhone has proper video drivers (omgwtf!!). You'd have to be on crack to say the Kaiser is better at this.
2. The iPhone has a faster processor, faster ram chips, faster flash chips, and a faster video card.
3. The iPhone has a better touch interface. One, it has a capacitive touch screen, and two it was designed from the ground up with finger/touch in mind. All of the current Windows Mobile options (largely from HTC) are retrofitted.
4. The camera, ok, well this is one area you're right. The iPhone's camera is pitiful and the Kaiser's rocks. The iPhone's is a cheap little piece of crap 2 megapixel camera with no autofocus. Lame.
5. iPhone 2.0 will have Exchange ActiveSync in June. It currently works very well on the leaked betas.
6. The next iteration of the iPhone in June will most probably include a 32gb model, as well. And the iPhone uses fast flash chips.
7. The iPhone is almost half as thin as the Kaiser
8. The iPhone has a much better web browser.
9. If this story is actually true, and your colleague was really "visibly shaken", I suggest you two go out and ride a bike, enjoy the sun, and get laid.
If you're going to crack on the iPhone, crack on it for legitimate (and true) reasons, such as not having GPS functionality, a ****ty on-screen keyboard, having a ****ty camera, being a closed platform, not 3G (yet), having crappy sync support (no notes, tasks, etc), not having an analog to the awesome Live Search software, no mobile office apps, etc.
The iPhone shines at what it does, and the Kaiser can't compare in its arena. The Kaiser shines at what it does (and is overall more useful imho), and the iPhone can't compare in its arena.
I see them targeted at different markets, currently. That may change a little with the iPhone 2.0, but for now they're apples and oranges (pun intended). Love each for their strengths, but don't just make **** up.
The only thing my iphone buddies have on me is a better web browser. That's IT.

You Guys are comparing two different Areas. The Kaiser is enthusiasts and business users, like IT and Smart Management. While the iPhone is for trendy personal use and it's kind of being shoe-horned into Business use. Though clearly not so well. Office Mobile v. umm...... Food Network Recipes! Is just one example. Yes, yes the iPhone is going to be Exchange Sync-able but still.
Also, important to note. I've been able to make an iPhone lock up a bunch of times. I guess I'm too used to my Kaiser.
iPhone this, Tilt that!
Unlike most iPhone users that I have seen or heard, I don't go around bragging about how special my Tilt is and flashing it at every passerby! So I guess when I go and buy a Echo Friendly Hybrid SUV, I'll add the iPhone to complete my all around smugness attitude. We all have our opinions about this and this one is mine......

The iPhone, for better or worse, is a wow kind of device because it presents a bunch of new concepts in a production mobile phone. My non-techy relatives were really wowed by Coverflow scrolling and all the GUI candy, for example.
Perhaps it's because the Tilt isn't really a wow kind of device. Rather, it just functions really well at what it does. Ok ok, the GPS functionality and camera really wowed me
You can see the iPhone's influence in a lot of areas of the Windows Mobile area. It seems like every ROM ricer is trying to insert iPhone-like software and hacks into their OS. Personally, I'm not a fan of making WM more like the iPhone.

One thing Apple does get right is design and "eye-candy" and since everyone is hypnotized by it, why not pretty up WM devices?
The iPhone is a slick device, I gotta give it that. However it just has way too many limitations. Here are things my Cruise has over the iPhone
-3 megapixel camera that actually takes video
-2nd camera for video calls
-stereo bluetooth
-internal GPS chip
-3G
-removable battery / removable storage
there are tons of other little things here and there such as copy paste, XDA forums, FM radio (Cruise only I think), exchange sync, blackberry connect (only on Kaiser can't get this to work on Cruise) etc.
There are also combinations of things, such as 3G with bluetooth, which allows you to tether your laptop with bluetooth and use a fast 3G network. This is huge, I tested 3G speeds vs an iPhone the other day, iPhone got about 114kbits/sec, I had about 873kbits/sec, almost 8 times the speed. Also as a previous poster said, Opera 9.5 is a great browser even though it's still in beta.
In the end everyone will get the device that works for them or makes them happy. The fact of the matter is the WM6/HTC combo is not for most users, the way the iPhone is. That's why the iPhone has massive appeal and is proving it through sales. It might not be that great of a device, but it is generally good and slick enough that people buy it. Meanwhile most of us have had to hack the registry & flash ROMs, stuff I don't expect the mainstream population to do. Furthermore the iPhone has been innovative in the sense that it brought several features that existed in other phones and put them together. Having an accelerometer in the phone is not a new thing, a phone that plays music is not a new thing but they packaged it all well together. The interface to the iPhone is intuitive, unlike a WM device. I fault Microsoft for a lot of this. A company that I feel has lost it's edge in innovation in many areas of their business. PIE is a POS. that thing looks so outdated. WM6 itself is outdated looking. Anyways at least they got the message and want to fix that in WM7 and beyond. About time, but it took something like an iPhone to wake them up.

Should I?
I just bought the iPhone a couple of days ago, and I am kind of disappointed. It lacks too many things to list. I know that sdk is supposed to be released in February, but I just don't think it can compare to the Tilt.
I will be using the phone to watch movies on, as I work nights, and that will help, so does the Tilt handle movies as well as the iPhone? I am not concerned with the slightly smaller screen size.
Since the Tilt is basically a mini computer, I know the abilities are endless, I am fairly decent in getting around a pc, plus the internet is a great help, but how hard is it to get rid of all the bloated crap at&t slaps on the phone?
I really like the iPhone's looks, and ease of use etc...but it just seems like it could be so much more, and I am stuck with at&t for another 2 years now, so I am just wondering should I switch to the Tilt before it's too late...
Thanks for any input!!
Michael
If you are going to use the tilt to watch movies... you shall be disappointed... read the various threads on video driver issue... it shall answer a lot of questions...
As far as movies go, I'd say it really depends on your standards of what quality a movie should be when viewed on a phone. What I mean is, I have seen many complaints of the video drivers on the Tilt. I think these must be from people who require/expect excellent quality video.
To me, movies look great on the Tilt, if you take into account, that this is a phone, not your 42" hdtv lcd, lol. They are definitely good enough to view, and pass time. Of course, again, standards of these things are so subjective, but this is just my 2 cents.
So, if you are looking to enjoy a good movie, in decent quality, then the Tilt is great, if you are looking for an amazing viewing experience, worthy of a videophile, then the Tilt will disappoint. From what I have heard, the iPhone is much better for video, although I have not verified this.
One of the greatest things about the tilt is the community you get here on xda-developers, meaning if you are ever stuck with something, these guys can (and will) help.
However, just using a tilt to watch movies is, imho, a bit of a waste. You may as well buy a cheap PDA if thats all you want. The tilt is an amazing device, full of features. And not using them would be doing the phone injustice.
Therefore, if you want a device which will: manage your photo/music/video album, navigate you, make video calls, make phone calls, send text's/emails, play games on, browse the net on, allow you to show off , get the tilt. If you want a device that will just let you play music and watch video's, stick with the jesusphone.
Edit: Oh by the way, I agree with cincy, i think movie's look spot on on the tilt.
Well to first clear up the confusion, I don't want it just to watch movies on lol...I just meant is it able to watch movies, because I work nights, and need something to pass the time with, ie watching a movie. That is just the only thing I am concerned with, I am aware of all of the other features the Tilt has to offer, and in my opinion it is in a class of it's own compared to the iPhone. I just wanted to make sure it could also play movies, so that I can combine all the features too. My other main concern is my wife's Pantech Duo, seems to me rather slow and bloated, which is what I am wondering about the Tilt. I am decent with PC's, but there are still many things I don't know, and just wanted to find out how easy it would be to clean it up to make it run more efficient.
Yes this forum is great, Apple has nothing this nice to help lol...Thanks for the replies, I have pretty much made up my mind to take the iPhone back and get the Tilt, so you shall be hearing from me again lol, for lot's of help making it work well
Well...
If you like the GUI there is an app/skin/theme for winDOS Mobile 5/6 that makes the GUI look like that of the iPhones.
http://www.iphonetheme4ppc.com/guide_QVGA/
There you go, and now that ive found it...
Im gonna install it myself!
I am an Apple MacBook pro user and love many of apples products... And i think the compatibility of the iphone and MacBook would be fantastic!
However I still prefer my Kaiser because it offers so much and isn't anywhere near as claustrophobic as the iphone with its "Apple Bluetooth" and requirement for itunes to do anything.
Dont get me wrong the iphone is nice but its a fashionable piece of Eye Candy and the Kaiser is a useful peice of engineering.
MM
PS I watch stuff on my Kaiser and playback is fine as far as i see, but there are many who loath HTC for the video drivers.
i watch movies via tcpmp during plane trips and enjoy it!

I have both. iPhone for my wife, Tilt for me. The video playback is night and day. I have yet to find any settings that work acceptably on the Tilt. If this is an important feature, you should look elsewhere because even if you are not a "videophile", the video is sadly disappointing.

And BTW, the web browsing is also WAY better. Again, there is just no comparison, even with Opera.
To me, the biggests problem with the iPhone is lack of 3G, no A2DP, and poor poor PIM syncing and no GPS. Strengths, video playback, multimedia syncing, speaker playback (the speakers although small, are actually quite passable and stereo), photo viewing and web browsing.
I don't play many games, but I would consider it a strength of the iPhone. Not sure about the Tilt.
As for 3rd party apps, my (very personal) opinion is there are very few "must have" apps and the one's I use on the Tilt (Resco, ImClose, AEBPlus) are all about usability and do not really apply to the iPhone. A BIG factor here is that most of the built in MS Apps basically $uck, like the photo viewer, file manager, media player, web browser, so it is almost a must to have the option to install decent apps to "replace" the built in ones. In this way, I think HTC is really doing well in mitigating the poor usability of the MS Apps. Like being able to navigate a playlist with a hardware button? No can do with Windows Media Player mobile. WTF???
You can see this even with the HTC shipped products. Their stuff is better that MS too, and many people come here to look for the HTC programs, many even cook them into ROMS.
So now I have to have room for two apps that do the same thing and it basically clutters up my device. Sort of like the 4 remotes I have to use just to watch TV at home. To me this is poor implementation.
So I am probably in the monority here, but once the iPhone supports GPS, a decent turn by turn navigation program like Tom Tom/ iGo and A2DP, and better syncing, I will be dumping my Tilt (much the same way as I have dumped MS Windows). I expect most of these features will come by the end of 2008.

Probably not a good idea to log into a forum and show disrespect to it's other members.
As for your question, to view movies I simply use TCPMP with a few codecs (which I can't remember the names of, sorry) and videos work like a charm.
I also use Kingdia Video Converter to convert my movies to .avi (if they're not .avi already), then use Ashampoo Movie Shrink & Burn to compress the movie to QVGA size. Brilliant Quality, small File size, win win win!

You clearly have not played with one much. The iPhone is smaller, lighter, thinner, and much more aesthetically appealing than the Tilt. In February, Apple is releasing SDK for third party Apps, and a GPS attachment (here: http://www.iphoneatlas.com/2007/12/17/gps-add-on-for-the-iphone-demonstrated-to-ship-in-february/
is supposed to be in the works as well. And I suppose not unlike the Tilt, I could always Jailbreak my iPhone, and put homebrew on it, but the iPhone was designed to be a lot harder to take care of if something goes wrong, like the battery not taking a charge any more, you would have to send it in to Apple, but you couldn't because of breaking the warranty. At least with the Tilt, you can put back what you have done to at least get repairs lol....

By community I mean the forum in general. It is the method of communication I am speaking to not the individual members. I fully realize many people have contributed lots of work and advice, and I try to do the same when I am able, but by nature of this being an open ended forum, you don't always find answers to your questions. It can be hit or miss. It just depends sometimes if someone happens to see your post and have an answer. How is that disrespectful?
Back on point, I think this forum is helpful in learning about Windows Mobile products and sometimes getting specific questions answered. This is something also available via Apple, in addition to dedicated product support, which both Apple and HTC offer. If I were considering it as a factor in buying a product, I would score one for the Tilt, as I think this forum is better than the Apple forum, but I would score one for Apple as well because I think their dedicated support is better (stateside anyway, plus it helps I have both an official and unofficial store near me and can walk in and talk to a person).
But are you also sure there isn't another "undocumented" forum much like this one for the Apple products, because BTW HTC also has a forum which leaves a lot to be desired.

Well I love PPC, but obviously you must not have owned an iPhone. I switched back to Windows Mobile for technical reasons, but I have to say we're far away from the iPhone UI. PointUI has a long way to go, everything in the iPhone is connected.
I still surf with Safari, when I have free time, and sitting in front of the TV at home.
lol I just came back from the iphone myself.
Like you, I wanted it for video playback. The screen is great and video playback was smooth.
But there were too many basic things that you couldn't do even with jailbreaking the phone that just left me annoyed.
if you don't mind re-encoding your video the tilt is fine. I re-encoded all my videos to slightly smaller res and put it into an mp4 container and played it on coreplayer. Video Playback is smooth, but it could be smoother with better driver support. But I'm not complaining.
To me, the Tilt spins circles around the iphone.

Not sure how far your computer skills go but trust me, the iPhone is more of a computer than the HTC TyTN II.
You seem to miss the point of the iPhone (the ingenius GUI/OS/touch operation), forget about the crappy EDGE and the lousy camera, this is not why people buy the iPhone.
Watching movies/listening to music is more fun with the iPhone due to the fantastic display quality.
Right now, I'm using three phones: the iPhone (hacked, has more than two dozends of third party apps installed and works like a charm), the HTC TyTN II (business stuff) and the Nokia N95 8GB (family vacations, leisure time).
My favourite is still the iPhone but I wish Apple would have offered it with UMTS/HSDPA from the start.

Only when it comes to third party apps and especially data connections.
Otherwise, the iPhone is by far superior. Of course if you don't mind the sluggish GUI operation of the TyTN II, not even mentioning the ridiculous touch screen operation HTC wants to sell us as innovative, the TyTN II really is a great phone. Don't get me wrong: the iPhone lacks a lot of features but using it on a daily basis as my main phone, I like it much more than the TyTN II or the Nokia N95 8GB. I won't even mention the Nokia E90 which sleeps well in an office drawer since I got the iPhone.
The iPhone is no business phone though, no blackberry support, MS Exchange support is half-baked at best and although the mail application is the best I've ever seen on a phone, the PIM capability is somehow limited compared to other "smartphones".
There is however a catch regarding the iPhone: if you're not a regular and enthusiastic iTunes customer, the iPhone may not satisfy you completely.
The ingenius thing about the iPhone is the easy operation and for the first time finally a satisfying touch control operation.

Haha Yeah guys its just a more basic phone for her. She doesnt need some crazy pphone that does as much as the Kaiser. She just needs a phone to talk and text one. She loved her iPhone before and was just getting the hang of things when I got rid of it and got her the Kaiser haha. But she would like to go back now anyways. To each their own guys. Its all personal preference.
well I would never buy an iPhone, I don't see why it's terrible for another person to get one, especialy if they like it and don't like the competition.
I love to tinker with my "toys"; some people want an easy out-of-the-box experience. You can't have both, so you have the winMobiles and the apples. To each his own.

I completely agree with you up until 'you can't have both'. Why not? I completely believe that this is where Windows Mobile falls flat on it's face. I would expect that the vast majority of iPhones sold are due to it's looks (I know that's the only factor drawing me towards wanting one). I would therefore argue that had the Windows Mobile interface looked as nice if not nicer then they would obviously be much more appealing, to both the 'fashion' buyers, and to the kind of people that use this forum as it would encompass both functionality, the ability to be modded, and aesthetics...and the iPhone would become obsolete! So come on WM...employ some f'ing designers!! It's a no-brainer!
altho i wouldnt have one, iphone is much thinner, lighter ..
most ppl just dont do the same or expect the same from their device as we do.
i know many guys who sold their tilts for exactly the reasons above..
my tilt is bigger and heavier than my 8y/o nokia .. its an everyday heavy lug when many times i just need a simple phone and occasional web connection..
if i could, or it made any sense, i would have 2 phones.. light and industrial strength
wife has really light thin phone and a nokia n800 in her purse.
driving around, she needs web access. nokia has fast and far wifi recognition..
at least 40% of networks are open and not pw protected..
she taps in real quick, does her business and drives off..
it worx really well
Iphone not so bad
I went from an 8525 > iphone > Tilt.
Still got the iphone. After it's jailbreaked and installer is installed, you can customize it and get just about any program you want on it. It's got style, and the transitions are smooth.
I like WM better, but for its hard to down the iphone, because it's a cool and fast phone.
one major reason i bought my tilt was b/c of the GPS... TomTom is so cool..
it saved me from having to own another gadget..
The iphone with installer does have a load of programs, but what annoys me is that most of those are just eye candy rather than actually useful apps or hacks like we have under WM... Of course the interface smoothness, speed and overall comfort makes it awesome for things like web surfing, but there's so much more functionality on a Kaiser that even if I like the iphone concept, when thinking rationally I would only use it for web and to look at it.. no possible justification to have both
I too to love the Kaiser for versatility. It has managed to include all the devices I was using, last one being the GPS that was external before and that I of course never had with me when I needed it...
Does not even the new 3G iPhone do picture msgs?
Man... maybe I'm crazy but all these people are talking about the iphone's speed and reliability.. In my personal experience (a lot, I live in trendy hollywood) I hear more people saying "I HATE this piece of ****!!" more than anything else about the iphone. Just having dinner the other night this girl's iphone lagged like crazy and straight up froze for a good 20 seconds. She said "It does this all the time". Then my other buddy's tryin to show me some pictures on his iphone and he has to turn the thing in his hand like 4 times to get it to switch to landscape. So from my personal experience.. it would seem that the "reliability" of the iphone is all how it was marketed, not how it actually performs.
I'm tired of my HTC Magnum. I would consider an iPhoney in trade, just to tinker with something different.
Hey I have 1st gen iPhone in very good condition unlocked. where you located? pm me asap!
Not to mention new iPhone 3G's battery is a disaster, wont last as long as even tilt...
So you could show up at an awesome party and try to use your iBeer to impress your mates, and only to find out your beloved iPhone 3G has died on you...

I'm pretty sure those "reliability issues" are like always caused by 3rd-party programs. iPhone users (at least those I know) often have 4-5 pages of useless but funny/good for boasting programs installed, so it's not surprising one could be buggy and cause problems.
One of my friends once had an issue where his iphone wouldn't even hold a day on battery anymore. Turned out it was a program that was still eating the CPU even on standby. Uninstalled and it was fine. He never had speed issues but it can be just the same.
The same is valid on the Kaiser and other WM devices too... I had a program (A2DPToggle) that would do the same, phone never went into standby anymore as soon as the today plugin was active...
Not even talking of the PC... It's just the same on any platform. Incompatibilities/badly designed programs will always be around.

I'm a HUGE tilt/ kaiser fan, and still don't understand what you're talking about. The iphone doesn't have poor call quality, it has great call quality. I've used one myself, and have tons of friends that have the iphone. Horrible messaging? No... it works great actually, it just lacks MMS (which should be comings hortly in an update). Oh, and lacking mms is probably just as comparable to the tilt's lack of a good dialer, or a decent camera....lol.

Apples and oranges here. While the dialer and camera may not be up to par to most folks, the functionality is already there.
Lacking MMS is a totally different issue.
Your thread, like every other time an iPhone and a Windows phone are mentioned together, has been hijacked. It is a fact that both camps have very strong emotions and a "my phone is the only choice" attitude. This thread is not the place for that discussion. Let's get back to the purpose of the OP.
Does anyone wanna trade an iPhone for this guys Tilt?
Anyone have a new one they would trade?
Hello All,
I just thought that I would start this thread because I know that a lot of people on this forum have been complaining about the status of the Kaiser and the Graphics driver (or lack thereof).
I have a Kaiser myself, and so far have been very happy with it, but when I managed to get a new iphone 3G 16Gb for a very good price, I thought that it would be interesting to try it.
I have now decided to get rid of one of the phones... which one??? The iPHONE!!!!!!!!!
I HONESTLY feel that the iphone is an excellent phone, but it is no where near ready to take on the likes of the Diamond or the Kaiser in the corporate environment.
What are your feelings? Please let me know if you have also tried one.
If anyone wants to know more details about why I sold the iphone, please feel free to contact me.
I am a student with a kaiser and i use many of its features everyday, but dont think i could EVER use everything this phone and WM(as much as i dislike it) has to offer. The iphone is a great phone that excels extremly well in its areas, but i dont believe the kaiser and iphone are direct competers. Iphone= entertainment/business casual phone for anyone, simple and strait forward. Kaiser= Business & complex phone for thoughs who need to be able to take there computer with the anywhere
My thoughts...
Both phones are really nice phones and what one does well the other lacks. To me the best thing about the iphone was the browser. Safari on the iPhone is much better than IE for WM. If you throw in the latest version of Opera into the mix the web browsing parts of the phone become more comparable. What I did was change the Opera user agent string to spoof the iPhone. This way sites that are designed for the iPhone come up in Opera without any issues that I have ran into so far. There are a few sites that I visit that have a much better version for the iPhone. A few for example are espn.com , nypost.com , delta.com and even the msn.com page looks better in Opera with spoofing the iPhone than it does in IE. If you spoof the user agent with IE it does not display the web pages correctly.
Email I give a slight edge to the Kaiser. Both handle it very well but once again the keyboard makes it easier for me.
MMS...Well I use it quite often and it was lacking from the iPhone.
I need to edit documents on the go and the iPhone couldn't do it out of the box and with it jailbroken it was a pain in the ass to do all that typing on the screen.
Using it as a media device the iPhone has the advantage. iTunes has a much better interface than WMP or Audio Manager. Easier to sync and the app store was kind of cool. I miss the iTrans NYC subway maps. Even though I know the subway system it was a nifty little app to use. Google Maps is ok for subway directions but preffered iTrans. What I found interesting though is that the Kaiser seems to have better sound quality than the iPhone when listening to music. I just got a set of Shure headphones and with Audio Booster I get much better sound than with the iPhone and same headphones. Most likely due to no EQ for iPhone. If there is one than I missed it.
For me I am back with my TyTN II. I guess I need to have my PC with me all the time and with the TyTN II I can even more so than with the iPhone. Plus I get a kick when everyone has there me too iPhones and I whip out my phone. It starts a few converstations a week while I am commuting...
I used iphone 3G for a month and has moved back to Tilt now. my reasons are quite simple
I can control my tilt by modifying it in whatever way i want, which i was not able to do with iphone
copy and paste was not there in iphone
eventhough the iphone feels sturdy i doubt it. i dont have that confidence in rough handling iphone as other ones i had.
the loudspeaker is very low
no flash support. Skyfire is awesome for tilt now
no file transfers
But of course iphone is a fantastic phone with a love at first sight screen and awesome browser. I would love to have a phone with iphone screen resolution and a iphone browser and everything else like tilt.
Geez, another useless "which one is better thread"...

The iphone sucks and always will, Wow it has a nice GUI, whoopty-fuc*ing-doo. So does manilla. And you can load 3rd party apps, without having to be connected to wifi, and (hold on to your seat) you can bluetooth a freakin ringtone. And one more suprise....Ready, Ya sure.... The kaiser can copy and paste, and even view a freakin web in FLASH. OMFG.

Iphone 3G is alright, i owned the original Iphone and messed around with my friends Iphone 3g. Its an ok phone. Its missing too many things i love from the Tilt. I'll start off with the things I love on the Tilt that the Iphone is missing.
1. Copy and Paste
2. Skyfire, and Opera Mobile
3. A true gps like Tom Tom
4. Bluetooth A2DP
5. Camera with video recording(plus its 3mp and 6mp with panorama shots)
6. Thousands of ways to customize with mobile shells, iphone themes also, etc,...
7. Louder speaker, its waaaay too low. I almost always missed phone calls on my old iphone, and iphone 3g is no different.
Personally, for me to want an iphone, those things would have to be in a future version. A keyboard would be nice, but i can live without it.
And now the good things.
1. Great big Touch Screen, the best i've ever tried.
2. Nice music and itunes going for it, buying songs on the phone through wifi. Pretty great stuff. (On another note, using programs such as S2P, S2U2, and S2V, would give you most of iphones greatest features on the Tilt. Mimics iphones picture, mp3 player with cover flow, and its lock program. They all work great on the tilt.)
3. Great video playback. The tilt is good for watching videos(such as youtube, but can't match the iphones much smoother playback.
4. Great App store with games that utilize iphones accelerometer and touch screen. Its pretty nice(although tilt also has tons of apps and games, certain things don't work nearly as good as they do on the iphone, especially when it comes to touch gestures.)
The iphone is a pretty neat phone, its just missing many things such as mms as well. I occasionally use mms, but its not a neccesity for me so i didnt list it, but it is for others. I'd wait for the 3rd or 4th generation iphone personally, before diving in. Or, you can look towards the google android. I would be getting one if i had t-mobile, but im on ATT. Its almost just like the iphone, going to have a similiar app store, mms, gps with street views, full keyboard, and nice big touch screen as well. When it comes to the Tilt vs the iphone 3g, the tilt wins hands down. A second generation ipod touch seems more likely to buy for me.
Thanks for your comments. I simply wanted to make sure that I was not the only person that is not so impressed with the iPhone.
I have now in fact sold the phone, but I think that I MIGHT regret it.
I saw an article yesterday that shows a programmer in Norway has managed to get Windows Mobile running on the iPhone. He has managed to create a "boot camp" equivalent for the iphone. Sadly the system is only in BETA at the moment, but he said that he will be selling the system in January 2009.
I am alone in thinking that this would be a REALLY cool phone to have Windows Mobile on the iPhone Hardware???????
Comments please!!!!!!
There is already a thread about the iphone running WM, but some of the commentary suggests that its a possible fake Anyway, to answer your question, Iphone wouldnt be Iphone running WM.
There are plenty of iPhone dissing threads in Off-Topic, Where they belong.

Hello,
I decided to leave Windows Mobile : I'm tired of this old O.S. which did not really change since 1999 !!! (My first Windows Mobile device was in 1999). And I'm not patient enough to wait for Windows Mobile 7.
So I decided to sell my Kaiser and buy an iPhone. I know I'm gonna loose a few things by using the iPhone compared to Windows Mobile, but the iPhone is a lot more "finished". I'm tired of freezes, lags, using the stylus for anything I do, etc ...
So I would like to thank all of you for the help you gave me for many years now ! This forum is great, xda developers are fantastics. This is something I'm gonna miss on the iPhone.
Bye guys !

My wife has an iPhone, your going to need this
http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1274
i just went from iphone to kaiser. i used to have a hermes. and i actually started to miss that phone. the iphone is great. but it lacks many features. the keyboard is one thing your going to need to get used to. it took me a while. but enjoy the iphone. if u need anyhelp with it or figuring stuff out. shoot me a pm.
tbh i am more than willing to sell or trade my tilt for an 8 gb iphone. my tilt has never been dropped and has no liquid damage or any other damage what so ever. if ur interested in either a trade for and 8gb iphone 3g or interested in buying pm me an we will work out a deal.
but you still had to come by to justify your purchase? Whatever floats your boat I suppose. I have a wizard with a dutty's rom, kaiser with HDIII, 3G iphone, original iphone, and just picked up a US spec diamond in HK with stock rom still. For some strange reason I always fall back to a WinMo device. Sucks to have to hack it to tether, a2dp? lol, usefull freeware apps? lol, and it locks up more than my WinMo phones. The original iphone truly sucked, and while the 3g was a step in the right direction it still blows. My diamond with resco keyboard, tomtom, and a few other choice apps is closest I've had to perfection from a phone. Oh well, enjoy your iflop.
Windows Mobile blows no matter what you do to it. My old iPhone and particularly my current BB Bold OS are much more complete, intuitive, FAST, and more user friendly.
Microsoft needs to pull their heads our of their asses if they wish to compete in this market.
No single piece of gadgetry that I have owned pissed me off as much as my tilt.
You wont regret a single second of Windows Mobile

The keyboard is one thing I was worried about. But I'm using the resco keyboard (iphone style), and I really like it. I have problems with the hardware keyboard of the Kaiser : double press issue, the space bar which poduce a "double-click sound", etc ... I have some difficulties to press keys fast with this keyboard. A friend of mine shown me how fast he uses the software keyboard of the iPhone (and not in landscape mode !) : he goes faster than me with my hardware keyboard...
I know I'm gonna miss many features of Windows Mobile, but it's now about 1 month I'm thinking of the iPhone, and I know what I'll miss and what I'll find.
I use windows mobile devices since "Windows CE 3.0", and until now I always wanted to stay in this world. But unfortunatly Microsoft understood too late that Windows Mobile needs a revolution, Windows Mobile 7 is announced for 2010, I can't wait so long ...
HTC did what they can to improve Windows Mobile (HTC Home, the cube, Manilla, etc ...) but behind this old style Windows Mobile is still there !
HTC also disapointed me about the hardwares : no drivers issue for the Kaiser (and I don't care about the 3D drivers, I wanted HTC to put the 2D drivers, which would make the device a lot faster in every kind of usage, including reading videos), my Kaiser is definitly too slow. I tried all the tweaks, ROM changing, etc..., but my Kaiser is still slower than my old Qtek S200... I'm also disapointed that the problem (lack of drivers) is quite still there with the touch HD ... So I definitly want to stop buying HTC devices.
So tired of HTC, tired of Microsoft : hello Apple ...
And I'll see if I can deal with the missing features of the iPhone, but I'll do my best to make my requirements fit the iPhone.
Again, thank you so much for the help you provided me for many years, thanks a lot also to the developers who made possible what HTC could not (3D drivers for exemple, even if I don't use it).
I wish you all the best for 2009.
Bye
i have found times where my iphone is actually not fast enough to keep up with the way i text/type. and just a few things you should know, the camera is horrible (no video recording, no zoom, no effects) your text is like a chat, so no Forwarding, re sending, or MMS. the only way to get a pic message is to receive it in your email. same way to send them, email only. only 1 program can be ran at a time. and the #1 thing that pissed me off was that there is no tethering via bluetooth. dont get me wrong, i loved my iphone when i got rid of my hermes. i thought it was the best thing ever, but after having it for a little over a year now. its hell. since im holding onto my iphone till my kaiser comes. ill have to see what the kaiser is all about and if i like it or not before i actually start thinking about selling my iphone.. i already got 3 PMs about people wanting it.

About the camera, if you jailbreak your iPhone, then the zoom and video recording appear ... The camera quality of the iPhone may be bad, but don't tell me that it is worse than the one of the Kaiser because I would not believe you ...
Same thing to run multiple programs at the same time : if your iPhone is Jailbroken, then you can install an app which does it very well.
Apple also said it will come with the firmware 2.3.
About the fact that you can't add a memory card, I don't care ! 16 GB is a lot more than what I need. Today I'm only using 5 GB on my Kaiser, and I have many videocasts on it (hundreeds !).
Again, as I said, I know I'll be missing things from Windows Mobile, but I took 1 month to take my decision and I really know what's positive and negative in the iPhone. And I'll do my best no to go back to Windows Mobile as this old O.S. looks like jurassic today !

haha. thanks guys. think i just found myself a new background pic.
I am looking more and more and I see that the Iphone is pretty fast and rounds well in terms of multimedia features.
They also claim it's great for work.
Now what is making you not switch to this device?
I'm curious to see your opinions!
All in itself!!!!!
I´m so happy with WM with all its defects and unlimited personalization and now with Rhodium you cant compare it to iphoney
It´s the 52nd thread about something related to iphoney
Im with you paisa!
All the winmo customization makes this devicesmore interesting... we had many apps to switch if we have more new features even in open GNU, no unlocks for everything you want...
If you said that the iphone is a powerfull toy in multimedia features... well its truth but... the speed or animation is not the only feature you may search in a "smartphone" remote desktop... internet sharing... obviously 3G multimedia player for almost all the codecs! well not so... this devices cant play .VOB
and the preferable Windows office doc xls and ppt or many DB apps in it editable and pdf by adobe direct app. encoding the avi is the nicer thing to rip your dvd's or Blue ray or... Matroska MKV nice def and low size!!! amazing isnt it?
Mp3 at loud! MKA... wma or whatever you want, GPS!!!
SO....so much why I am happy with Windows mobile devices, Iphone is just... that... a pretty phone... well manufactured by the famous Apple... thats all.
oups did I say gb, gba, nes, snes, sega emulator... Oh! **** even Playstation emulator! hahaha, Java is just the beginig of your boring days.
WM and XDA All the Way!
Here's a already started thread for info: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=3928679#post3928679
switching to the IPHONE is as same as quitting from XDA
our WM device is absolutely irreplaceable (too many historical value inside 1 or 8 GB in our Storage Card)
well..WM is kind of a nation and identity, no matter how good and bad it is, but that is my soul (i'm proud to have it)
I probably shouldn't answer this thread but I will!!!
I have an ipod touch and have had WM phones since the magician, I also borrowed my mates iphone 3g while he was abroad for a fortnight to see what I thought of it. Iphones are well executed devices, the appstore is neat as is the ability to easily download music over the air, but you know what, after a week I was bored with it!!
The TD2 I have now just works and I can change the way it looks without "jailbreaking" etc.
My plan costs less than half the cost of the iPhone plan, and includes unlimited texts.
That's pretty much the only thing keeping me on WM. Of course, if an Android phone comes out that works on SERO, I'll jump.
Well the big reason im not getting it is the fact that my business discount doesn't apply towards the iphone plans.. bleh... but I'm happy with the WM progress with 6.5 and TF3D.. give it couple years MS will catch up to iphone..

then again the Iphone is still playing catchup as well..... MMS, Tethering... Finally but not for AT&T.....
video(about time), 3MP camera(Meh... 5MP minimum nowadays), uh, I'm missing a lot here..... But they finally caught up.... look apple finally put SD card slots on their laptos too.
or maybe MS will enter to iphone!
like Mac OS few years ago, with "Office for MAC"
Mac OS just has a WORKS app that emulates the spreadsheet the text documents and the Presentations like PPT then MS makes Office for MAC! jajaja imagine how much does MS can do with money and popularity!
My wife has an iphone 3g (non "S" lol), and I have my old faithful Hermes100.
To eliminate any perception of bias, here's my home. My server, 2 personal comps, and my two work comps all run linux, I have an old imac that serves as a bedside entertainment center (50 pound fancypants dvd player) and iphone sync'r, and my firewall runs FreeBSD. The only Windows I run is either paravirtualized or on my phone. I can't wait to make my linux HTPC and linux car-puter.
I think I would rather have HTC's latest slicker-than-snake-s**t WinMo phone over apple's latest anything anyday. Unless cost was no option, in which case I'd have both. Obviously a phone that could run *nix, or windows mobile, or (heh) iphone's OS would be the most attractive to me. I don't think I'll see that happen anytime soon.
When she first got her iphone, I told her I was going to need to jailbreak it to be able to install an openvpn client so she could access stuff at home remotely. At least with Windows Mobile I could write a hello world, compile it, and run it on my phone right out of the box. Oh, and I can cancel my data plan if I want to.
Freedom - gotta love it
Easy answr!
No customization, not for real geeks, its just a pretty looking mp3 player and phone.
not for biz users, plus who the heck PAYS for these apps? I mean who would buy a twitter app for iphone that is free for every other phone? that there is reason enough not to change for me.
If i were changing it would be android, but i would still be on htc devices and have WinMo as y 'other' or vice versa.
iPhone is a yuppie phone for multimedia lovers, thats it!
HTC will keep me from switching to apple (eww). I've never really liked Apple in the first place.
WM, HTC, & XDA will keep me happy!
Iphone not my cup of tea.
I've just converted to android this morning - dumping my WinMo crap now because I *love* my new G1.
There's some nice touches borrowed from the iphone but it feels a little less wrapped in cotton wool than an iphone...but not quite as edgy and unstable as a WinMo device
Smiffy.
I do not enjoy having EVERYTHING ruled by Apple. You have to pay for ringtones (Android allows you to make them on the phone). Most of the apps are paid apps on the Iphone. The G1 may not do everything that the iphone does, but the things it does do, it does better than the iphone. I will admit, I sometimes have apple envy when Im messing with my friends iphone, but it fades quickly when I hear him ***** about not being able to tether (without a $60 plan), or about having to use crappy ringtones, or not having a landscape keyboard, or countless other things.
I do think that the iphone is sexier, and I know that it has alot of cool accessories (I love the ifrogz).
However until Apple is a little less vigilant about keeping things locked up tightly. I will stick with my G1, and I will stick with my Zune.

Good post Dredge. Ii agree there are some nice things about the iPhone. The slimness compared to the Pro but the slide out keyboard makes up for that! The iPhone does rule in one thing though and that's the web browsing. It is exactly like on a computer where the Sprint phones, up UNTIL the Pre , where not easy to navigate. I went and played with the Pre and it is likke the iPhone as far as ease of use with the web. I wish the Pro would release an update to make web browsing better. We'll see. But the HTC whips the iPhone is everything else!

Dredge,
I completely agree with you hardware wise. Only Apple's can make the handset that run this wonderful OS. So, there is no reason for HTC, Samsung, LG, Acer and the rest to want it to succeed. In fact, it is natural for any of those hardware supporter to hate iPhone. Supporting iPhone would tentamount to closing their own smartphone business completely.
However, your perception regarding inability to change and add free ringtone is not accurate. I can get countless free ones. Also, most applications on Applestore are very very cheap or free. Of course, Cydia applications are also mostly free.
Before 3.0, landscape keyboard is not globally available and had to be achieved with third party software (e.g., in email and SMS). This of course will change with OS3.0.
Tethering is possible already with jailbroken phone. With non-jailbroken new iPhone, it is the Carrier who's disabling it, and not the limitation of iPhone itself. AT&T really need to raise its bar! I think the backlash against it would grow, and rightly should.
BTW, is AT&T not placing similar restriction for G1 customer?
erm... MONEY lol i got my XDA for free and the iphone is very expensive for what it is, lol.
