New Orange Kaiser - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

My brand spanking new first ever Orange Kaiser arrived at 6.30pm, I swiftly unboxed and booted to check the battery status (59%), I straight way contacted Orange who transferred my number to my new SIM card (they warned it could take 24hrs, it actually took a couple of minutes) and then immediately ran hard SPL, Pof’s first, no luck, then Jocky’s, which worked.
I then ran the IMIE check software and fired off the resulting file (and my I.D), who responded in 20 minutes with the unlock code (time was about 7pmish), whereupon I immediately installed Dutty’s 6.1 most recent ROM, which worked a treat.
Total time from box arriving on doorstep, to new OS installed, under an hour. Not bad for a relative newbie I thought.
Is this a record?
Ps, not a single post requesting info, i read the forums and Wiki till my eyeballs ached.

i hope you didnt pay to have your phone sim-unlocked......
theres a prog floating around on here (and im sure its ok the WIKI) that would have done it for free...
just so you know, im on orange UK aswell. 750mins unlimited texts and 250MB data bundle for £20 a month

I was aware of the free unlocking software and i'm sure it's worked for lots of people but given my Orange ROM was not a 6.1 radio i'd be having to use Jocky's unlocking software (unless i am mistaken) which given the steps and complexity of using this i decided on balance it was £20 well spent, although its really down to personal choise i suppose.

Morning sherbert66 & billington.mark, have been lurking several times and chickened out of replacing the Orange ROM plus not convinced I fully understand the acronyms nor the steps. I've tried the wikis found on google but am still not sure enough to take the plunge - don't know why as have been mucking up PCs for years. Anyway, if you don't mind can you point me to the info that is relevant for getting a new and decent ROM onto my Orange supplied TyTn (have downloaded Hard-SPL V2 and KaiserUnlimited)... thx

Thats a good deal I have to say! I get 750mins and free texts, but my data bundle is Evening and weekends unlimited. The only alternative they gave me on data was £1 per day of use unlimited. So either cost you an extra £30 or nothing depending on how you use it.

Hi,
Firstly you need to hard SPL to allow you to upgrade your phone to the cooked ROM's.
Run Jocky's hard SPL:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=354061
Once this is done then you must SIM unlock the phone, if you do not then and you try to upgrade to 6.1 (and i presume you do) then you will find the phone will SIM lock you out after you have upgraded it.
Use either Jocky's SIM unlock (free):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=361039
or IMIE unlock (£20):
http://www.imei-check.co.uk/kaiser-unlock.php
Then cherry pick a ROM from the Wiki:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Kaiser_Cooked_ROMs
or mosey on over to the ROM development forum to see what rOM's are just out. Hard SPL and SIM unlocking are once only deals, after these steps are complete you can change ROM's as often as you like, it becomes a bit addictive after a while!
please do read the Wiki as this is a valuable resource, the instructions above are just a brief summery of what worked for me, its important you read up on each step, everything you need to know is there, including what to do if things go amiss, which radio's are best and which to avoid and so on. Like i say, i spent a bit of time researching it, time well spent.

Free Kaiser from Orange
Forgot to say, my Kaiser was free from Orange on a £25 tarrif ( 200 mins, 100 texts, data not included) as an upgrade, originally when i phoned i was told it would be £129.99, i then politely asked for my PAC number as i would be moving networks to get it for free (a white lie), i was then immediatly transferred to customer retention where the free offer kicked in. 18 month contract but still, not bad.

Dutty's ROM's are superb, fast and reliable and very highly spec'd. Some poeple prefer different aspect of the different ROM's but for a great all rounder you can't go wrong with a Dutty, can't recommend it highly enough.

I do exactly the same, got mine free with a similar price plan, going to go for the unlimited data bundle. I already know i'll be doing the same on my other phone when the touch diamond comes out!
Thanks for the recomendation for dutty's rom, just got to find the time to sit down and do it. Got to wait til she's out for a good day and night to leave me time to play!
Must get out more...

Racoon 35
Hi Guys,
I got my Kaiser / Tytn 2 on Orange last September .. probably about a week after it came out
Racoon 35 - £35/month on 18 month contract - this gave 700 across any network minutes, plus 100 text (not a big text guy) .. plus unlimited landline numbers starting 01 or 02.
On the £35 contract, the Tytn2 was £89.99 but the package provided cashback on an old phone ... I got £150 c/b on an old nail of a Nokia 3110 ... cashback works on airtime credit so I've bought the phone with four months free use.
Because I wasn't with Orange previously, I couldn't try the 'I'm leaving you ploy' to get it for free ..
They were/are also providing unlimited data access at evenings and weekends for two months.
Negatives .. Watch out for the data after two months free use .. the small print automatically puts you on a £5 a month data tariff if you don't opt out (the same with the traffic TV service too).
I've unlocked it (for free) and I'm on my third ROM ... waiting to have the new official ROM cooked before I have another OS
Nice to see more Orange users her

Anyone on dutty's apr 29 with an orange radio? If not, any issues with the .68 latest radio on orange? I know what orange are like, i'm reluctant to change the radio rom so i get the best signal etc. but i want to sim unlock when i flash to dutty's. i'm on 1.27.14.32 shipped radio as it is and think i read it was a good one, maybe i want everything too perfect!

I don't want to go off topic too much. But I too am an Orange user who got what they wanted after a bit of persuasion. I got it on the £30 a month package, but at £20 for the first 9 months and £25 thereafter. With doubling the minutes from 100 to 200 and keeping it at unlimited texts (I can text about 600 times in a month easy). I knew they really didnt want to lose me when they decided to give me the £129.99 phone for free.
Saving me about £100-150 in total on any other deals I found around.
I have left it at the standard ROM and really don't know if to start messing about with it yet. I don't want to risk ruining it just yet. But then I am really curious on what these upgrades are like.

I'm too chicken.... It all seems like too many steps! Really don't want to mess it up... I don't want to change the radio or unlock, but would have tried just a new O/S rom from Dutty, but too chicken!
LOL

Dont fear the orange employee is here lol.
As long as you follow the instructions in the wiki you will have absolute 0% issues when flashing your ROM
As for radios any is compatible as long as you use wm6.1 radio with 6.1 ROM etc (common sense really)
If you are worried about the kaiser developing a fault then if you take a look at the search tool at the top of the page it can magically find the original orange supplied radio and ROM for you if you need to return it.
Dont worry as long as you read properly you will have no worries with modding the h/set
And finally hello to all the n00bs just remember use the search and help as much as you can and you will find this forum invaluable

switch?

I currently have an At&t tilt that came with the stock software. I was wondering if I should switch over the the HTC rom? What are the benefits? What are the cons?
Also is it true I can use tomtom with the HTC rom?
yes, there is benifits because it will free up space available, and will open everything smoother and faster. Yes, you can use TOMTOM with HTC Roms, i have.. I am using Tmobile so the ATT crap had to go.. good luck!
Read the descriptions of the different roms and see if they appeal to you. TomTom shold work on all of the roms including the stock tilt rom. I run it on my tilt with no problems at all.
Ok I looked through the wiki and while it shows how to flash the HTC rom on there, it didn't mention a comparison between the two(sorry if I missed it).
Could anyone give me a link comparing the two?
Is it risky to flash my phone? Can it brick easily and can it come out of being bricked?
Anyone that has had both roms and tell me which they prefer?

I haven't seen any cons mentioned yet, and I think there is one.
I have read that there are many benefits to changing to a non ATT ROM, but keep in mind it will voice you warranty. That's why I have never flashed.
In most cases, you could just flash back to ATT ROM, if you needed warranty assistance, but my big fear is what if one encounters the infamous Red Light Of Death and is unable to flash back, or some other situation which makes the phone inoperable?
I'm just too chicken, and too broke to risk it
Original Poster,
I believe I remember seeing a thread in this forum (probably quite deep at this point as it was some time ago) comparing the stock tilt rom vs the HTC OEM rom. I'm betting a search for this thread will get you the answers you are looking for.

thanks. I think ill stay with the att rom until my warranty runs out. The tilt comes with 1 year right?
can I download tomtom from their site or do I need to do something special to get it?

Hi:
Yes, the Tilt has a 1 year warranty. ATT is actually VERY helpful and quick at replacing your phone if you ever need it (as long as it doesn't have physical or liquid damage).
As far as Tom Tom, the Tilt doesn't include it at all. If you want it you will have to buy the full version (which I believe is around $150).ATT did this to try to trick you into using TeleNav (for $10 a month).
If you search around, I believe I have seen the taster version (which came on TyTN II) floating around. I haven't used it, so I'm not sure exactly where I saw it.
is there any free gps software out there? doesnt have to be tomtom.

Google Maps, and Windows Live are both free, although for me they weren't very good. I just don't see the point of Mapping software that doesn't have voice announcements, doesn't seem safe to sit and stare at your phone while driving, lol.
But that's just me, others have said they really like both.
The paid for apps do have voice alerts etc.
I personally use iGo 2006, and really like it. I have also heard very good things about TomTom.
nav4all is free. its very basic, but it gets the job done without costing anything. I would suggest saving up the 100 dollars it costs to buy a copy of iGuidance 4. You get PC, UMPC/Laptop, and PocketPC versions all on the same disk for one price. It also doesnt require a data connection to work, but does require 1.3gb of storage space on your memory card for all the map data. So youll have to figure in another 15-30 dollars for a 2gb card, unless you already have one you can use.

Internet Sharing and O2-UK unlimited web browsing plan

I'm using Dutty's new 6.1, and finally got around to start playing with the "internet sharing" function, which i find is REALLY REALLY COOL!
That means i can browse anywhere i want with my laptop thru HSDPA as long as i have my tytn2 connected
but i'm wondering, will O2 charge me extra for doing this? i already paid like 7.50pounds extra for unlimited web browsing...
of course, this is assuming i dun go downloading full movies and something stupidly big, you know, jus simple web browsing and recieving email and all that.
any ideas?
Just read the smallprint in the O2 contract. There will be a "fair use" policy which will probably give indicative usage limits. I use my T-Mobile Vario III on the move all the time to hook up my laptop and have never had any issues from T-Mob.
I would suggest caution as most of the T&Cs state that using the phone as a modem is breach of the contract, however it never stopped me using my old Vario 2 lol!
I asked about fair use when adding an ulimitted data bolt-on to my current contract.
I asked I assume there is a fair use policy on this, of say 200Mb?
She replied that the new bolt-on's (as of a month or so ago) are completly unlimited in terms of usage.
if it's not written down...!

you might want to check the contract to see if it excludes "tethering". they're unlikely to notice, but you don't want to get hit with a big bill...

I'm not going to try it. Just repeating what I was told.
Not sure how much truth there was in that...
I reviewed the O2 boltons they all have "fair useage policies" much the same as T-Mob.
Vodafone and Three currently charge when you go over there data limits.
And from what I can tell Three are the only compnay to allow "tethering".
Yeah 02's fair use policy for their "Unlimited" data bolt on is about 200 meg. Quite how they can call it unlimited is beyond me.
If you are using an 02 bolt-on that must mean you're on pay as you go. Could you give me some advice on how you set up your connections because the auto config thing which came on my stellar only configures for contract and i'm a bit confused. I've found the settings on this site but my phone currently has two connections, "mobile web" and "O2 active" and i don't know what the difference is between the two so i'm not sure what i should put in where (if that makes sense).
Thanks a lot

Orange Diamond Stock

As I am an employee of Orange I thought I would let you know...
We got an email to day to say there are 3000 handsets "in testing" at the moment, it might not be until August that Online Sales, Phone Sales and Stores will see these handsets. By then they will be Orange Branded.
I would take "in testing" to mean they are putting their own version / skin on the TF3D...um NO!
There was ONLY 413 handsets delivered to ONLY the top 100 stores so thats why they will be hard to find if there are any left. These lucky ones where the "Generic" ones.
I was just lucky I was working the day they where delivered to our store and I got my hands on mine or else I still wouldn't have one...No handset charge, £21 per month, 600mins 2000 texts, 250Mb internet bundle, and Free Insurance.
I work in a top 100 store and we only got 4, I bought mine and we sold the other three in 2 days.... We now have waiting list of about 25 people.... deep joy!
Oh! And from what I have been able to gather from speaking to our Tech Support team Orange's HSDPA coverage is pretty much non-existant unless you are in London and you are sitting on-top of a radio mast, so you may aswell switch it off.
I am finding some funny issues with mine at the moment though....
If I receive 2 text messages one after another (within 30 secs of each other) then the phone vibrates constantly until I take the battery out....anyone else had this?
Also, I installed TomTom 7 on it and for some reason "sometimes" when I call someone once the phone call is connected TomTom starts up all on its own....
The only software I have instlled on the device is TomTom 7 and the latest version of the TF3D config.
the phone is running the following configuration:-
ROM Version: 1.37.405.1 WWE
ROM Date: 12/06/2008
Radio Version: 1.00.25.03
Protocol Version 52.26a.25.09W
.G.
I was told by the Orange rep today that the 3000 were about to be released. They're not going to test all 3000, just a small sample.
Then there'd me no more stock till August.
If that turns out not to be the case then I'll cancel my upgrade.
well im sending mine back on monday so there will be one more lol for someone.
any idea when the toutch pro will be coming out (the reason im sending the diamond back)?

Touch Pro is a HELL of a lot thicker, so if the sleek look and feel of the Diamond is your bag it's not quite there with the Touch Pro.
It's not a 'better' phone as such, more aimed at those who demand QWERTY and extendable storage, though it does still look pretty cool.
Release date is allegedly september 1st, but this could be delayed all the more (remember the Shift anyone?)

If HTC launch the phone on September 1st then "IF" and only "IF" Orange decide to sell the handset just add about 2 Months to the launch before you would see it in an Orange shop or be able to get it from Orange direct.
e.g. The Diamond was launched, when?... Middle of May?....Only made it into Orange stock 2 months later.
DO NOT phone Orange anytime soon asking if they are doing Touch Pro as we only get about 3 weeks notice (if we are lucky) as to what the phones we will be selling, so nobody will be able to give you an answer, they just want to keep the hype down so that they don't sell out faster than they can get them in.
Also NEVER trust the instore magazine, in my 2 and a half years at Orange I have never ever seen one that has the truth in to for example the July Mag is the first one to have the Diamond in it with it's specification and not as a "Coming Soon" phone, and the mistake they made? They said it had a 5.0Mp camera. Another fave of the magazine people is to publish phones in there as coming soon but then never sell them!
So if you want to Touch Pro on Orange don't hold your breath, you might be lucky and get it just in time for XMAS!
.G.
Also, if you don't like the answer the call centre person gives you, phone up again 5 minutes later - you get a different person and a different answer!
Keep ringing until you get the answer you like. lol
Can i check sth with the person that works for Orange? If we flash our diamond to a better and faster ROM and then sth happens and we have to send it back under warranty, does this invalidate our warranty? cause if we have a generic ROM on the handset, we can always claim it was one of the first ones that were not Orange branded, right?
Thanks

But does it?
I have not read my current T&C, but I found nothing in previous T&Cs to say specifically that that altering the ROM would invalidate the phone warranty.
Technically if the phone is faulty, then it can be returned under warranty and unless the fault was caused directly by the owner/user, then the warranty should be honoured. So if the ROM change caused the fault then you are out of luck, but just because the ROM as been changed, does not mean the fault is the cause of that - for arguments sake a faulty screen or panel button
As this is an electronic device, then updates and enhancements will naturally become available and so its reasonable to assume that these can and should be applied - arguably in the same was as a PC can be upgraded.
But for those not in the UK, check local laws

Irish Diamond problems

hi there
i have a touch diamond that was got from holland , unlocked and unbranded
rom version 1.35.401.3 WWE
using the Meteor pre pay network
last week the when making calls the person at the end of the line can not hear a thing im saying
anything I can do to fix this ?
step by step guides ?
thanks
Joe
Wooo! Another Diamond user in Ireland!
I'm also on Meteor pre-pay, but I have a Diamond from the UK (1.37.405.1 WWE). I've had no problems with calls or texts or anything...apart from mobile internet.
The built-in connection settings for Meteor are just wrong. They don't work at all. The WAP settings are available elsewhere on the internet, but I've managed to acquire (after confusing Meteor customer care quite a lot, because they've obviously never even heard of HTC) working mobile internet settings. The only problem is that their prices are ridiculous (2c per KB)...but at least I can check emails and the weather if I really need to.
If anyone wants the proper Meteor mobile internet settings, just ask (or phone customer care...and be prepared for a long conversation).
Oh, getting back to the original problem, have you tried your device on any other network? I would really doubt that the problem is Meteor-specific, because I've never had any problems using HTC devices on Meteor. BTW, aren't the new pre-pay deals really cool? Not sure about that magic mobile genie though...
Alright lads! Where did you get your Diamonds? and for how much? I'm trying to bring one into Ireland, cheapest way?
I would also hazard a guess that it's a phone specific problem, have you tried flashing a different rom?
Meteor Pre Pay here btw... I'm signed up to the 3G test, I get free 3G till the end of August! woohoo! They'll have PAYG deals when they release to the public in October.

i ever bothered with the internet settings for it as i use the wireless when needed for emails etc , and the 3g will be out in october

This may be just me, but I would try upgrading the radio. I've had the same issues with some of my other htc phones and it always fixed it for me.
I am on Vodafone and no problem with HTC DT on 3G in Galway. I have flashed it with a Diamond Project ROM including the latest radio and had to fix the access point to hs.vodafone.ie
Got mine on Ebay this week from all4ustore_lv for €450, paid last Friday, got delivered this Tuesday! Scary part is the insurance, it shipped as a memory module with value of £50. If you are a frequent visitor to Paddy Power then I suppose you can take this gamble too...

The cheapest way to get a Diamond is probably to get one from eBay or the UK. Some websites don't like delivering to random countries though, so you might have to physically go to a shop if you don't like the eBay. I wonder if they're available in Northern Ireland - I can't see any reason for them not being available there...
3G test! I heard about that, but as I'm only in Ireland erratically I've never really investigated it. I'm here for a while now though - how did you sign up to the 3G test? On 3G do they still charge that crazy 2c per KB? Also, how good is the 3G network (coverage, speed, etc.)?

Flashing in 2 steps:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=408621
hardspl 1.24
ROM of your choice such as:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=407572
Direct download link:
http://duttythroy.net/downloads/ind...DiamProject_V2_5.2.19965_Radio_1.00.25.06.zip
Follow the instructions and backup anything important.
Ordered the Diamond from the UK the day it was released. Upgraded the rom to Dutty's Diamond Project and it works a treat. On O2 network and getting a Gig a month for €15 so thats pretty good. After Flashing with Dutty's ROM I have freed up about 20% more memory so it runs much smoother.
ok ill try and do that over the weekend , thanks all
ok iv seem to have got it working now again

Is that on some kind of contract?
1GB would cost €20,971.52 on Meteor.
Irish guys, Expansis have some cheap Diamonds as "B" stock, and having just returned from W.Cork visiting me Dad, I recommend TomTom7 to you, the Irish maps are spot on. Wish I was there now.

Isn't the "B" stock all of those returned grey imports from HK? Thanks for the tip about TomTom7 in Ireland.
Hey lads, living in the south and I've ordered the Diamond, should have it in a few days.
Up until now I've been using an old Acer n310 (WM5 and no phone capabilities and linked via bluetooth to a GPS module) with iGo 2006 (for about a year) and iGo8 (for the last 2 months). I've been trying TomTom 6 on and off. My job involves driving all around Munster and the iGo maps are far better to the TomTom 6 maps; more complete in terms of small roads, and more road and townland labelling. Also higher accuracy. So I'll be using iGo8 on the Diamond too. I definitely recommend it.
I'd been connecting the Acer to my bluetooth phone to use the internet and get my emails. I'm on O2 billpay and 250mb is €7.50 a month, which is great value. So the Diamond will mean one device instead of 3 for getting my emails, making calls, and navigating around the place.
Isn't there an issue that using alternative ROMs will cause the AGPS to stop working?
TomTom 6 uses the older navtek maps, TomTom7 uses the latest Teleatlas maps, which for W.Cork anyway seemed to have every little road, if you could call it a road. Some of the little lanes in W.Cork just aren't good for your suspension, I mean they are smaller than the width of my car and rougher than the dark side of the moon!
Using TomTom 7 on my Diamond + Uk/Ie Maps been to dublin cork waterford and never had any problems.

Right it seams to be an intermittent problem , could it be something to do with the network signal ?

[Q] sprint phone lost, replaced, and then found...

ok - i typed in the title, read the other threads (diff. phones a/o diff. countries) and i think i approximately understand the issues involved...
given: i lost my hero a few months ago (knew it was somewhere, but after a couple days i went to sprint and asked what-to-do... they said i -could- replace it and if it was 'found' then itd be "blocked"...)
1 - i filed a claim as lost (had TEP so paid $100 and got a new/refurb phone real quick) and then went ahead and started 'using' the new one...
2 - didnt worry about anything (no fraud, alls cool)
3 - two or three months later, i find my old 'lost' phone... (crap - now what?) i eventually plug it in and charge it up and when i turn it on i immediately turn off all the radios (afaict) by putting it into airplane-mode...
4 - now, with this old phone i had root and custom-stuff - and notably some details that did not get stored in my google-contacts correctly (birthdays?)...
5 - i grabbed what i needed off the phone and now have a presumably-perfectly-good-piece-o-junk sitting here not doing anything...
ive done some reading and some googling and have figured out that 'the man' can track my phone using the meid or somesuch - and im not particularly interested in using it as a phone anyways since i already have the exact same phone working just fine...
im not interested in being charged for fraud - and/or selling the old phone to maybe some other country or whatnot... basically i am just interested in 'tinkering' with the phone and using it for whatever it might be good for...
so, like a 'totalled-car' - i want to futz around by trying new roms and maybe leaving it as a music-player or bar-code-scanner or gps-system in the car...
now, the question: what can i 'turn on' without getting into trouble ?
in particular, since nothing has been on since i powered it up - it says something really bizarre like yr-1928 or something... i just want to get a signal that will reset the clock and allow my to turn some stuff (like gps) on - without getting into trouble... heck, if i could just turn on the phone (and NOT make calls - since when i checked, it is still locked into my phone-# and acct) but to have it as an emergency-911 system in the car - thatd be great too...
when i switched-carriers a decade ago (and bought a new phone), i kept my old nokia around and used it as an alarm-clock cuz i preferred the beeping it made and did not want to 'use up' the battery on my new phone (treo 600)... i also knew that it was not 'dead' and so if i needed to make an emergency 911 call - that itd work... technically, ive still got it (and several other old phones that ive upgraded thru the years) - and most of them would still serve similar purposes...
but this is the first time ive 'worried' about turning on a phone... should i be ? can i just turn on gps ? or maybe only wifi ? or will anything that i do with this thing cause my phone to 'register'... maybe i should just call the insurance-folks and return it... i guess i could do some -playing- with my older treos, but this hero was my first android-device and im not some rich-kid that gets a new phone every 3 months to 'play with'...
any suggestions/info about what it is 'ok' to do with this lost-then-re-found android-phone would be welcomed... and thanx for reading this wall-o-text... i can be babbly...
I highly doubt there is a APB out on your phone. It sounds to me like you are struggling with the good ol' question of is it ethical or not.
I wonder if you can spoof that hero to match that of your current Hero, have both phones working sharing the same plan/minutes
yeah - a bit of ethics, but also some practicalities...
ethics: since posting, i went to insurance-site and looked thru it (no faq) and the only things that happened when i put in my info was that it said theyd already-shipped my phone... nothing about where-to-send i refound-phone back... i did not go thru the 'reopen claim' section cuz the screens it started-to-show did not have anything about replacement... my guess is that reopen is for if-you-lose web connection or cannot-pay the deductible or somesuuch... i guess i could try to find a phone number/email and try-harder... but...
practical: i dont really WANT to use it as a phone (except maybe 911), but i want to play with it as an android-computer... maybe use it as a little wireless-surfer at home - or just leave it in car as a backup... gps unit ? testing roms without having to lose my 'real' phone...
i guess i -am- just paranoid... but i dont want to piss off sprint if they happen to notice it online... i actually have not even tried to place-a-call or anything - since i assume that it is still intimately-tied to my phone-number/acct...
is there a way to set it to NO account ? maybe i will just wander into a sprint store and ask - i imagine they get this kinda question all the time and have some answer... prolly just ('leave it here since it belongs to insurance co') something non-useful tho...
thanx for the reassurance that the phone-cops wont come banging down my door tho ... lol...
PagePlus...
You could flash it over and use it on PagePlus. My hero was on Sprint and I bought i second hand with a bill owed and use it on PagePlus. PagePlus uses Verizon and Sprint+Verizon have no way of checking each other bad ESN's.. for a howto on switching to pageplus, look up my posts, I have a guide
You paid $100 for a refurbished phone that Sprint was selling for $79 on their site at couple of months ago. I don't think they will be concerned about getting your found phone back, or what you do with it, as long as it doesn't involve fraud, IMHO.

excellent points !! i had not thought about it that way...
hmm - i had been reading about the xfer-process to a verizon-radio/other-phone... in fact i think (for those few days/week it was lost) i actually have some prepaid plan (altho maybe it has expired) that i got from a simple phone in walgreens... once id gotten my phone/phone-number back, like many things, the disposable-phone is just sitting there not doin anything either...
also, the idea of being able to use either-of-them on the same phone number seem much more intriguing - since that way i could play with custom-roms and if i really like it - can switch the other phone to it - and make them 'match'... but it looks like the cellular networks are pretty much designed to be one-phone=one-phone-number systems (like ipv6), rather than many-to-one (like ipv4-nat)...
hmm - maybe i could get another line (creating a family plan) on this phone - but then theyd prolly try to 'sell me' another newer phone... yeah - and my yearly-upgrade is prolly due to kick in anyways... sigh... too many choices - and i really only need one phone/number...
idk - thanx for all the great ideas/comments... i did not go into the sprint store today - but i realized that i could go in and ask the questions by not having -any- phones on me at the time... (to avoid feeling guilty and giving one back if they asked)
maybe i will just 'lose' this old phone again - and not try to worry about it too much... h.

making them match would involve doing something illegal (IMHO) but as far as using it for a different carrier is perfectly within your legal rights to do so. you've paid for it, its yours.

yup - i think ive got that part (ethics) sorted out...
altho - when i went to go check on how to switch to another carrier, the sw needed (assuming i purchased it) actually might allow me to do that 'illegal' thing too (iirc)... that sw (cdma workshop) is actually pretty darn cool because it looks like it would allow me to 'play' with some of the other old phones that ive got sitting around as well (treos and nokias)... and that got me realizing that im possibly going down a rabbit-hole of possibilities...
switching to another carrier seems like the best (legal) use for it... thanx so much for the clues on how to do that... since ive already got my current-working-phone, im not in any rush to deal with it atm... assuming i do something (as opposed to just letting it sit and collect dust), ill go ahead and update this post with details/threads/whatnot...
oddly, the thing ive found most-useful ? just having it sit there as a full-battery-backup... if im in a hurry a/o have forgotten to charge my primary phone, i just swap out batteries and im good-to-go... yes, that is an expensive way to get a second-battery/charger - but just sayin...
thanx again for all the help - on ethics and practicalities...
btw - your screenname is very funny...

No software is needed except for aLogCat to get the code to edit settings for ##3283# , just your phone an a 2.1 Rom and some time to follow some directions, I can do it now in 20 min or less but at first took me few days to get it all together..
thanks, lots of people don't get it you are a one of the small percentage that does get my screen name
