Why i'm starting to dislike my Diamond - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

1- Battery life (there are already some 60 threads on the subject..)
2- When the phone rings, the display is activated and the softkeys automatically unlock causing you to reject or answer calls randomly while drawing the phone out of your pocket or pouch.
3- when sending an SMS, you type up your contact name (or part of it) then the diamond shows you a list of names to pick from. if by chance you clicked the wrong name (fat fingers anyone? ) you're outta luck.. the message gets sent straight away to the wrong contact..
4- i can't seem to get dataconnections to shut off with the hangup button, or with an auto timer.. i tried various registry settings, yet my connection is almost always on (auto connect is disabled, but once it connects, it stays on)
5- Opera is cool and all, but for some reason i'm finding it extremely difficult to use..
try opening facebook on it.. and at least in my case, the login screen redraws like 10 times while i try to type my damn login/password in.
6- the contact list in the phone dialer sometimes has the wrong type of contact on, like txt or fax, etc.. and in 60% of the cases when i press the right/left navigation on the d-pad to switch to a different number belonging to the same contact, the thing goes into a loop spinning numbers nonstop till i exit the phone and get back on again.
7- no tasks on TF3D
i'm not giving up hope on it yet, and i hope that most of these issues would be addressed when the Touch Pro is out.

1. Like you say theres already lots of threads on this, with people complaining, then others saying they're having no issue, or to wait a bit and the battery gets into better condition
2. If display didnt activate people would moan about that too
3. Huh? A text wont send till youve entered a contact and you press Send
4. Then you must have a program using the connection like push mail or live messenger
5. True. Opera is still a beta version though so issues will be dealt with i guess
6. Maybe that's an issue with your rom, I've not seen this
7. Indeed - Annoying. I think this is seen as one of the least Important parts of Exchange so it often gets left out of things like this.

you can pick up diffrent ones, but remember that your diamond will gain pounds. try getting a new rom, the newer ones boost battery by 50%

Battery life does improve with time. It is lasting about 2 days for me now. I read that the 3G iPhone has a similar battery life. The Diamond is not bad, considering how much smaller it is, and the VGA screen.

This will be a problem with all touchscreen phones, if you set it to answer on any key press. I must admit I keep my Diamond in my pocket without a case and haven't had this problem.

Use CommManager to shut off the connection. I do this after I have finished with the connection. I don't mind it, and would actually find it annoying if the connection closed automatically after the program closes, as I usually use other programs which require a data connection straight after.

I actually gave up on TF3D and now use SPB Mobile Shell. This has been a revelation in how a touch system should be implemented. It is extremely responsive, easy to use, intuitive, and fully customisable. Also looks pretty with its own 3D effects. I think it compares very favourably with the iPhone interface.

To bad that you start to dislike it, anyway take a look here you might change your mind after that.

It is perfectly normal to feel like this, I actually use my HTc diamond mainly for sat nav and a back up phone. I also have the iphone 3g and it is a pain in the back. But I will keep persisting with both as they get better with updates.

Interesting, I was thinking of doing a similar thing. As you have both and use both, how does the battery life compare? If you leave on all the 3g options on the iPhone, and likewise on the Diamond.?

thx. that looks really useful, i guess i'll have to install the same set. he he he

Bored with the diamond.
Will use it for parties and of course for navigation (got garmin running on it.. and it works well for that)
Have had a tough time using a phone other than the SE P series (owned them all and loved them all.. without the flip .. all of them look amazing)
Back to my SE p1i as my primary phone. Diamond - put in my other sim card.. the number I rarely use...
it's not bad.. it's just not...whatever.
I got it on an impulse.. loved the looks.. hated a few things. Found this forum and it definitely made the diamond more interesting and useable.
so thank you guys.
But.. SE has spoilt me. In between I had tried Nokias and Moto's as well. Also tried out I mates.. but just didn't do it for me. Had to come back to one of my SE P series eventually (800, 900, 910, 990 and now 1)
But......
still waiting for the xperia.. will definitely give that one a try too.
(just can't help myself)

1- Battery life (there are already some 60 threads on the subject..)
i dun have any problems... try to install comm manager.cab... disable wifi and beam if u have to on yer bluetooth..
2- When the phone rings, the display is activated and the softkeys automatically unlock causing you to reject or answer calls randomly while drawing the phone out of your pocket or pouch.
yer keys are unlocked.. choose lock instead under windows mobile settings
3- when sending an SMS, you type up your contact name (or part of it) then the diamond shows you a list of names to pick from. if by chance you clicked the wrong name (fat fingers anyone? ) you're outta luck.. the message gets sent straight away to the wrong contact..
use the compact qwerty.. big enough for fat fingers.. any larger wait for the touch pro to arrive
4- i can't seem to get dataconnections to shut off with the hangup button, or with an auto timer.. i tried various registry settings, yet my connection is almost always on (auto connect is disabled, but once it connects, it stays on)
tts wad most peeps want rite.. use MOnaco's nodata.cab... u can disable and activate connections depending on when u want it.. do things manually is still the best.. esp when it concerns your bills
5- Opera is cool and all, but for some reason i'm finding it extremely difficult to use..

i din really have such an issue

But I think would be better to open another thread. So I'm doing it...
PD: the prooooooooooooooooblemmmmmmmmmmmm with words repeating were showing on 2003SE also....
i also get it but only on wm5
annoyance
c'mon, people, nobody with a solution???
I have the same problem.
Some programs in WM5 tend to take up processor cycles, and appear to be causing the problem.
Problem is, there are MANY possible programs (causes).
For me, the most common cause is Internet Explorer. Go to "Memory" in Settings, and close all tasks. Then try using the keyboard again. If it works, then you know that's the cause. Then, you can try to narrow down the program that's the processor hog.
Good luck!
turn down the repeating speed, it is in start>settings>keyboard>repeat settings. set it low so it will not repeat like that
First of all, thanks for your answers!

Yeah, I thought so, anyway I'm having the same problem on the SMS window. It seems to do a redraw (or better, a recalc) every time I push a letter on my keyboard, and it looses words. Took me 'bout 10 times to get the right number on the 'To:' field. I was always getting +3423888888888 etc...

Didn't you guys are having this havoc on your devices??
I don't know what is happening with my baby
Any Ideas??
Maybe a little fix.
Also had a problem about the words repeating thing.
But that time my device is downclocked to 299mhz by that time.
I did a soft reset first then overclocked my device to 531mhz.
after writting a message it seem to have improved significantly.(But it still lags
for a second or half sometimes.)and the words repeating seems to be gone.
But im not totally quite sure.Still need to check it more. And tell you how's it going.
O and lastly im just wondering how come it's soo slow to open a message and switch to other messages?Unlike 2003 se which only takes a second or soo......
I'm using pocket hack master to over/downclock my device.

The reson for the redraw, I think, is the number of characters in the message display at the bottom (i.e 1/168)
If I write an email the redraw problem is not present - if I swith to SMS it comes back...
Yeah, a clever think would be to switch this counter off. I haven't found it on the registry, nor a hack.
My question: if before it was ok, why change it?
Well anyway it is not the only reason for this word repeating problem. It appears on other programs also.
And no solution yet
Haven't had time to try brentchua solution...

1- I'm complaining because this problem was already happening on 2003se (please, read above).
2- After so many problems with bluetooth, AD2P, etc, don't you think we deserve more attention from the ones that sold this devices to us?
3- If I stay on WM5 is because I realize the BA performs just ok on this OS. I'm using it mainly for work purposes.
4- Complaining is also a way of start doing things later. Something has to come first... :!: I've complained to I-mate about this problem when I had the original 2003se. No answer to date. That's why I decide turn back here and do this wonderful upgrades to my device.
What I find is this forums (as all of them in the 'net) are quite hard to search and find answers. Somehow we should find the answers given and put them in a common place (the good answers!!) i.e. the Wiki!
Anyway, what I'm looking for is answers and share them...

I´m having again this problem. I´ve done what have been suggested about changing the registry values for adjusting the priority values... still having this problem.

ill try that... but i do still want sound
think im jus outta luck, ill jus have to deal w/ it.
it bothers the hell out of me too.
i wish there was a fix.
In order for there to be a "fix," it has to be broken first. This is how it was designed. When you get a message the phone wakes and receives the message. Therefore, the screen lights up. So there is no "fix," its functioning as designed. Though if anyone knows of "tweak" you may be able to change it. But I really don't think there is a way.

There you go again asking for a "fix" to the screen lighting up. The point I'm trying to make is that this is like going to Ford and saying every time I turn the Wheel to the Left the car goes Left. Can you fix that?
Also, I would think that preventing the Screen from Coming on when the Device is "doing something" would prevent it from coming on when you wanted to.

lol not everywants their screen to light up when somthing comes in, everyone wants thier car to turn left when they turn the wheel left.
cant believe we r goin this far about a word, but im not quitting!!
Definitions of fix...
1. to repair; mend.
2. to put in order or in good condition; adjust or arrrange: She fixed her hair in a bun.
3. to make fast, firm, or stable.
4. to place definitely and more or less permanently: to fix a circus poster to a wall.
5. to settle definitely; determine: to fix a price.
6. to direct (the eyes, the attention, etc.) steadily: His eyes were fixed on the distant ship.
7. to attract and hold (the eye, the attention, etc.).
8. to make set or rigid.
9. to put into permanent form.
10. to put or place (responsibility, blame, etc.) on a person.
11. to assign or refer to a definite place, time, etc.
12. to provide or supply with (something needed or wanted): How are you fixed for money?
13. Informal. to arrange or influence the outcome or action of, esp. privately or dishonestly: to fix a jury; to fix a game.
14. to get (a meal); prepare (food): What time shall I fix supper?
15. Informal. to put in a condition or position to make no further trouble.
16. Informal. to get even with; get revenge upon: I'll fix him!
so from these examples it obviously means something doesnt have to be broken to be fixed. could mean many things, and im using number 2, adjust or arrange. like it says, doesnt mean the girls hair was broken, she jus didnt like it so she fixed it to make it better.
FIX my screen from lighting up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
haha
I think it is a problem. My back light goes on from an email and stays on till the battery dies or I notice it. I have to be careful and check it frequently or I get a dead phone by lunch. I need the backlight to do what I setup in the power settings - I think it should be turning itself off. It ain't.
u changed it under power settings and under backlight settings?? def shouldnt stay on toooo long!
ki think we are outta luck here. I have the same problem.
I just have to lock the device from having anything accidently turn on
look mr. mcgee, you are very right ("its functioning as designed"), but it's a poor design to say the least. (Fire the turd that came up with that design)
If someone sends me a message i'm forced to stop everything i'm doing so that my phone doesn't get into mischief and go calling other people without my knowing.
I usually have my phone in my holster with S2U2 running. If only there was a way S2U2 would not wake up for anything other than a phone call, but would still vibrate or ring you when you receive an sms or the like.
If someone could come up with a fix..(or excuse me)... a tweak..... I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT!
+1!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Its a poor design maybe for u and some other few people. The majority think its a good design. I cant seem to understand your problem. When someone sends me an sms and my phone is in my case(holster) and I dont want to read it, I just leave it and the backlight turns of itself. Where is the problem?

Pretty much exactly my point. It seems every month or so some person comes in and attacks the phone for doing what its supposed to. This is the second Light comes on when I get a SMS thread I've seen. Next people will complain because the phone is ringing when they get a phone call.
As for the person who's light stays on indefinitely after receiving a email you may actually have a problem. The phone sometimes will "stay awake" if there is some program running in the background that is misbehaving.

Thank heavens I am not the only one. I thought someone from xda made a secret competition and the winner will be the one that have the most complains on his phone. If u dont like your phone, buy another one that suites u better then this one. Sorry for being so b*tchy.

Phones and everything in life can always be more. In this case our phones could, and in my opinion should, be more customizeable. The reason they aren't is because if the phone user feels overwhelmed by the complexity of their device, they may not like it and will be less likely to buy another in the future, so from a marketing standpoint there is reason to dumb things down to a degree.
I, however, want as much customizeability as possible.
My girlfriend's Samsung i760 behaves different from my kaiser. On her phone SMS messages will NOT bring the phone out of standby (and turn the display on.) It does give the requested sound and/or vibration alert and flash the LED and display the message notification on screen (when you turn it on) for the set time periods, though. The i760 runs WM6 like our kaisers. My kaiser, as well as every other HTC device I've ever owned does take the phone out of standby and turn the display on for SMS, though. So this tells me there definitely is some software method of tweaking it so that it does what you want. I don't know what it is, but it would sure be nice of someone knew of a registry setting for it.
BTW, our kaisers take the phone out of standby for SMS and MMS (and phone calls, of course), but don't do so for emails. Every day email and SMS become closer to eachother to me in significance and importance, so why shouldn't they cause the phone to behave in the same way?

Interesting. I'm sure there is something that could be done. I'd be willing to look into it. But I'd need a Samsung i760 to see if I could pull any info or software from it. So if anyone has a Samsung i760 they'd like to give me for development purposes of course, I'd see if we could figure out how to make this happen.
BTW, My phone does turn on the screen when I get an email.

ok, good point. Have u tried some sms applications? Maybe they have the option to not to turn the screen on. (just a suggestion).
If this ever happens to you, you have a bad phone and should return it. I really hate it when MY phone wakes up and decides to randomly call someone in Hong Kong.
Seriously - I have to understand this - you really honestly think that your phone can wake up and call someone, or email someone, or SMS someone without you doing something?

vibrating on startup

is there any way to prevent diamond from vibrating on startup?
thank you!
There probably is but it woudl mean you have to go through the registry to find the relevant keys and adjust them. I myself dont know which keys would do the job but im sure someone here will be able to help you out.
Now this is probably not the answer you are looking for - but why? Not trying to flame or anything, but I've noticed sometimes a lot of energy can be spent on irrelevant problems. With all due respect, this seems like one of those to me.
A bit more to the point - I strongly doubt a registry value can change that - the vibration occurs apparently BEFORE the operating system is loaded, so registry is meaningless at this point.
I think the phone does a self-test....like said before: it does vibrate before the OS loads, so I don't think there is any registery tweak for this

Ya it does, it cheks all the systems on startup. So be worried if it does NOT vibrate, means your vib crappppeddd out.
Cheers boys

sure it's one of the less important things...
but for me it's a annoying one because i always let spb-backup do a daily backup (which is rebooting after the job) early in the morning when i'm still sleeping - it was fine with trinity (there i had also to do a reg-tweak to disable startup-animation with sound) - with diamond sometimes i get scared from the vibration...
and yes - i'm not sleeping like a log...

Hehe - I see your point. Not much you can do about it though, I'm afraid.
This being said, if that vibration wakes you up, I really hope your home is VERY soundproof
Or simply put your diamond on or under a pillow.
Obviously there needs to be a movie about those horrible phones that go around terrifying people in their sleep!
That said, presumably you are putting the phone on a hard surface? Try putting it on something soft and wooly. Should significantly cut down the noise from those demonic vibrations.
Don't think there's a way to do that. The Touch Cruise does the same, and no one has figured out a way to disable it there as far as I know.
The issue with putting it on a soft surface to not make noise is (presumably) that if he did get an actual call or message, it would also silence that as well.
Can you change your schedule for SPB Backup to do its thing just as you go to sleep instead of in the middle of the night? Or if you don't always sleep at the same time, kick it off manually just as you go to sleep or step into the shower?
I know these don't solve your question, but are ideas to create the desired outcome
i hope i am not ruining this important topic with my high tech proposal for a solution.....
maybe it will be less stressful if you'll program the back up at a different hour....let's say ....when you are brushing yr teeth in the evening....BEFORE you go to sleep.
the back up (thanks god for SPB backup, it saved my ass so many times) takes only 3-4 minutes. right before you'll go to the lalala world you'll hear the reassuring vibe and you'll fall asleep with a smile on yr face knowing that the job is done.
good night, sweet prince. good night back-uped diamond....
I love how this topic gets so many replied but more usefull problems get none. Got to love the internet
I could code you a microcontroller to ignore any vibration signal for the first 30 seconds from start. All you'd need to do is open your diamond and solder it inside.
Hey its a solution

Loving the Diamond... but big issues have come up and they are starting to make it difficult to really use the device. I am trying to determine if the issues I am having are brought on by myself or if the issues are related to some challenge with the phone or my carrier.
"What's the issue," you ask?
The Diamond will not pick up a call. The phone will ring, the caller display will come up, I'll try and pick it up by either pushing the onscreen command or pick it up via the pick-up button... nothing. The call rings through to voicemail. Meanwhile I have to call the person back who just called me. Massively irritating and even more irritating it's does actually pick up SOMETIMES. The problem is I cannot determine why it works sometimes and why it does not. 90% of the time it does not work. When I do get it to work all I need to do is activate my bluetooth headset and then turn it back off and we are back in the same situation where the phone will not answer, however, this time... the phone does not RING either! Yes that's right - all sounds go bye bye on the phone when I activate BT and then turn it off. Also, I cannot pick up the phone with bluetooth headset. I can hear the phone ring through and everything looks dandy but no go! Push the pick-up button - nothing. This isn't such a big deal really - I mean - who cares if it picks up on the BT headset - I just want to be able to answer a call in general!
Now - I do have a lot of applications on the machine from a modifcation perspective and I am thinking this could all very well be my fault. I have Advance Config, Diamond TF3D config, and Diamond Tweak all loaded (each have their own benefit.)
Strange thing is... I just did a test and the phone picks up JUST FINE. I'm about ready to pull my hair out. It's really hard to put my finger on it. Tried it a second time, if I try to answer with the soft key it won't work but the hard key will work. Now the hard key will not actually hang up the call - I have to use the softkey to hang it up. I don't know if anyone is having the same issues but I am to the point of hard-reset to start from scratch.
I actually had the "can't pick up" problem just yesterday, but with my Prophet. Using Pdaviet's MyVista 6.1 Rom and S2U2. The phone rang, S2U2 displaying the full screen call notification, no chance of picking up the call.
Do you also use S2U2?
When you find your self in a hole, it usually helps if you stop digging.
Unpalatable as it might seem, I think with hassles like you've got, a HR is probably your best option.
ps, just a thought, have you at any stage in your tweaking done any button or key re-mapping... either inadvertently or by design? Maybe worth a check before giving up
wow, that's a whole load of issues
I've had my Diamond for about a week now..... and have had none of those issues..... Bluetooth works fine, picking up is a breeze....
what provider are you with?
I remember reading more complaints about sound going bye after Bluetooth use in the early days of the Diamond. Try searching around a bit and see if you can find something. However, seeing your other issues, a hard-reset might not be out of place.
Also, for aesthetics, do note that it is usually considered bad practice to place two identical symbols after each other when masking cursewords with random characters.

By far probably the best advise yet!
The emotional side... aka incredible hulk... came out and punched shift/keyboard number row (pounded rather.) I was thinking in my head, "smash Diamond" and the KB had to take the abuse.
Carrier information for those who asked.
CDMA Diamond on the lovely Telus system (aka - Tel-us, we take your money)
As with all troubleshooting, you need to start from beginning. When you first got the phone, it could answer call. Right? So you need to trace back to what have you done to the phone step by step and to find out when it starts to fail.
Doh... Well I reset the device... seems to work now but something that seemed to be working before was my Zune subscription music from Zune Pass was synching to my mobile device via a Synch Center setup. I was amazed it was actually working... now it's not working So - I get calling back and lose the little trick that was working - Zune Pass DRM music synching with my Diamond... you win some and you lose some I guess doh.

You should do some research and some reading.
And relax a little before you Fire up and disrupt a Community in peace.
I have the same thing going on now... same programs installed as you.
Is it still working after a hard reset? Did you re-install all the same programs?
Well, I'm on a Telus Diamond, and had the no answer problem, and solved it with a hard reset.. just try it, it doesn't take too much to get everything back to the way you had everything..

Only one problem with the Diamond 2 thats annoying

When the device wakes up from standby it goes to the TF3D home screen, even when in a call and you need to you the 'people centric' shortcuts that HTC boast about. So when you turn your screen on during a call you have to press the small green button to take you off of the home screen and back to the call screen.... most annoying
Is there anyway around this, I have had a quick search but mostly this issue relates to the old TF3D and there does not seem to many answers.
Please help
I just tested this for you. Whilst in a call I turned off the screen and then back on again. It resumed to the call screen and not the TF3D screen as you suggest. Sorry, I have no explanation for you.
The behaviour may be different if it times out to the standby mode (whilst in a call), rather than you pressing the button.
It mainly does it when you slide the slider down and then turn off the screen and turn it on.
The other main problem is say your in MS word and the screen goes off it takes you back to the home and you have to go back to word to carry on what you were doing, has anyone managed to disable this action i was wondering if it was a registry entry but i cant seem to find any thing
Does this not annoy anyone else?
Anyone got any ideas?

As annoying as on the D1 it is , but some existing tweaks might help disable screen off.
I still need to change my D1 to D2 in the next days but will become (again) a participating member here going untill 6.5.1 with this one
Iphone had me captured for a few months, but despite the tortures given, I refrain back to PDA & HTC

I don't have my TD2 in yet but is there not the TaskManager Icon on the left top of the taskbar?
You could just click on that then on (for example) MW to get back to it instead of going back to programs and opening it. It is a pain sometimes.
Is there not an option that disables it going to the Homescreen? IDK....Just throwing things out there.
IIRC on my Elfin when I was running Touch Flo 2D, I think I had M2DC, but coud set it to go to main screen after the screen went off or stay where it was. On Onyx 6.5 rom for the Elfin after the screen locks I am back to whatever screen I was in.
There will probably a fix for this anyway.
Edit - I had a thought. If you use the Locking App I use (CAB below) there is an option where you can check if the today screen is shown after lock. Mebe if you install this and un-check that setting it will no longer jump to TF and stay in the program you were in.
If you try it let us know.
Well, some more "problems":
* remove the back for a softreset
* remove the bk for the storage card
* no d-pad
On all other aspects: better than the D1!
(and even nicer...)

Removing the Cover to soft reset will be a pain but there are programs for the like psShutXP. (not sure how it looks/works on the D2 seeing it's wvga)
I really don't see in haveing to remove the back cover for an SD card is a problem. How many times do you really need to remove it? Especially since you can throw in a 16GB card and call it good. I have to remove the back cover on the Elfin even though the card is on the side.
No D-pad will essentially be a little bump but I am hoping the screen is big enough. With the 6.5 Rom I've been using on the Elfin I hardly use it unless I feel lazy to touch.

Ah I see.... I didn't see the "" when reading..... LOL..... I just get a little frustrated when I hear about the SD card being under the cover. So many reviews online have mentioned it and it's perfectly fine. Allows for less moving parts. The door on my elfin is rather chipped from opening it so many times. I mean atleast it's not under tha battery like some phones I've owned.

If you want to get rid of th elocking policy for ever have a look at Zenyee Stay unlocked...
I'm mostly annoyed by the sensitivity of the screen. It's so on par of the iPhone 3G.
