Bad Usb Port - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

I belive I've killed my Usb port on my Tilt. I can still charge it, but it won't sync or pass data to any PC I have, I've tried various cables, and even cleaned the lint out of it and still Nada.
Is it a major mission to replace the USB port?
Any input as to which Pins are needed to transfer data? I've looked at it under a microscope and it looks like the middle pin is either pushed down or back.
Thanks. I'll try to post pics of it if it helps, and even pics of the phone open too.

There are many (many many many many) similar issues, that's not the first time. Use the search function with key words like "usb broken" for example.
E.g: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=354472
You might want to have a look at this repair website (cited in the previous thread): http://www.pocketpctechs.com/main.asp?area=home

Unfortunately I came across a ton of posts about USB's but nothing about not bad USB.
I'm interested in fixing it myself, not sending it out as well.
I'm reading up on the links you've provided, thanks.

Installing w/2.3 multi-instaler and bricked my 8125!

Is there nothing to be done? I had a phone whose touch screen was acting a little off. I used Cingular_Custom_AKU2.3_Combo_Installer_V1 after unlocking the device and it ran fine. When the OS first comes up it requires you to recalibrate your pointer tho, and since my touch screen was fouling up, I couldn't. I called Cingular and got a replacement phone this morning. I turned it on and let it load up its OS. I used ActiveSync and had a successful sync. I unlocked the device. I used Cingular_Custom_AKU2.3_Combo_Installer_V1 again to upgrade the OS. At 40% my computer unexpectedly rebooted. According to the messages that appeared when the computer came back up it was a driver error that caused the reboot (http://oca.microsoft.com/en/response.aspx?SGD=aa971456-440a-4269-a79e-1f07bda35989&SID=10). I tried to run the installer again but it could not find the phone; ActiveSync could not be engaged. I powered the phone off and back on and just get the RGB screen. I tried to reset the device but nothing still. Am I completely screwed??
Do a little reading on interrupted rom flashes. Search for "Bootloader Mode".
You need to flash your device again but this time you have to start in the Bootloader screen (RGB Bars).
Cool thanx. I looked around for people having problems installing ROMs but the only thread I found no one had answered. This gives me something to search for. Appreciate it!

One other tip, from what I've read, it is recommended to make sure your Wizard is connected to one of the MAIN USB ports on your computer, for desktops, these will be on the back of the computer (the ones soldered directly to the motherboard). The ones on the front are usually essentially connected to a USB hub, and not directly to the controller.
On a laptop, all of the ports should be good.
mine did the same thing last night with the 2.3 with cf2. i had chosen option 2 (no bootloader) and my machine rebooted at 40%. Since this has happened to me once or twice before, i walked in the other room and did the upgrade from the laptop without issue. then sync'd the phone back up with my desktop as was good to go.
On a side note, you don't need activesync installed to upgrade the phone. if you keep running into issues try from a different computer. thats what has worked for me.

Seconded. Use the USB ports on the back of the machine that are directly connected to the motherboard. Sometimes the ones on the front are connected to the motherboard via a cheap connection.
A number of manufacturers assume users will insert and remove devices which scrapes off the oxidation, and use cheaper metal because of this. A connection that stays in for a long time eventually builds a large enough oxide "crust" it causes problems with the electricial connection, and becomes flaky. This is possibly why a number of front-port USB plugs become intermittant after a while.
I've noticed newer PCs are using gold-plated contacts which tend to make this problem go away, but both mating contacts must be gold, else you get bi-metallic chemical reactions between them, and have the same problem as tin or copper-based contacts.
Sometimes there are so many things hanging off a computer's USB bus that you might just buy a PCI card with USB 2.0 plugs on it and use that.

TyTN II USB Drivers?

My TyTN II isn't being detected by on my PC.. I've tried uninstalling everything and reinstalling everything, but no luck.
Where can I find USB drivers for the TyTN II? I don't recall installing it when I first got my phone, but someone suggested it, but I can't find it anywhere.

Are you connected via a non-powered USB hub as this can sometimes cause a problem.
Have you tried a different USB cable? I spent a day trying to resolve the same problem on my Universal a couple of years back, only to find the cable was at fault.
EDIT: Did find one other thing a few months back. I installed one of those business card scanners to my laptop and found that whenever it was plugged in, my phone was no longer recognised.. Seems the scanner was pulling all the available USB power for itself.
I've tried 3 different cables on 3 different computers
I'm not using a USB hub..
Did you try changing the advanced settings for the USB-PC connection? I have had that, when I uncheck that box all is good.
Start->settings->connections->USB to PC-> uncheck Enable advanced network functionality

I know this may sound stupid but you are using Activesync aren't you?
I just ask this as you have not mentioned it. A WM device will not be just recognised as a USB device like a printer or other peripheral.

If you have tried it with three different PC's then it does sound as if the port on the phone may be at fault.
One last question, did it work before at all?
Anyone else with any ideas

Yes I've been using it for 4 months and had no problems. The port on my phone works, I've been using my headset and it charges when I plug it into my PC.

Take a magnifier and look at the port under a good light. See if everything looks OK.
Also check another thread close to this one regarding battery drain whilst connected. Could be that you have a damaged port and it shows different symptoms to theirs.
Someone on that thread says it costs $80 for a repair but hang about a few days, someone may come up with a better answer for you.
Hope you get it sorted.

Port looks fine.. but my batteries draining.. This started 2 weeks ago.. and I've been charging fine.
No I do not remember if I installed drivers or not ... sorry. Try using bluetooth connection to sync. if all fails. I have had that with my old P910
I really think there is something going on here - I am starting to see loads of threads relating to this.
I am also having problems syncing suddenly. Started about 2 weeks ago. I have dual boot on my laptop - vista/XP and my Kaiser wont sync with either anymore.
It seemed to be charging fine up until yesterday when I again suddenly couldnt charge it from anything other than the official charger. Before that I had charged it on pretty much anything - my proporta power supply, sync cable attached to a USB plug, blackberry charger.
If its hardware then there is obviously a weakness with the USB connection as so many people seem to be experiencing similar things.
Maybe time to contact HTC although after their response to the video drivers, wouldnt hold up much hope.

Yep done the standard stuff with people for the last 8 months. Whereas it may or may not be attributable with this problem... I am trying to collate data.
Trouble is, a trend is starting to occur with damaged (PHYSICALLY) mini-USB ports that are not done by the old 'Sticking the stylus in the port'.
There is a trend of failure when using a STANDARD mini-usb connector in this port. It is a non-standard connection so if failure occurs it needs to be rectified.
Hey, I aint doin a lawsuit, I am just working on a free refurb and advising HTC to modify AS IT SHOULD BE!!!
Just for grins, try to connect via IR or Bluetooth ...

Help with disconnects/unable to connect

Hi,
My Diamond is really unstable when it comes to syncing it with my computer. Some times it works fine, other times it won't even connect (not recognized). When it does connect, it usually drops the connection before I can even sync anything...
Anyone know how this can be fixed? One of the posts I found suggested a bad data pin on the phone...:S
I get the same - please help us!!
USB Cable
I've had the same problem before but it turned out to just be the USB cable that came with the phone. Have you tried a different cable to see it that's the issue?
Graham
I've tried two different computers, three different OS' and three different cables :S Was hoping that an HTC adapter I had lying around would fix it, but doesn't look like it :/
Thanks for the reply, though

USB device not recognized all of a sudden

Im hoping that someone can help me with this please.
For no apparent reason this came up on connecting to my office pc yesterday, I tried at home today with the same error on two separate machine.
Have searched the forums with a few dead ends where people have resolved but no reasons given.
As others have done have backed up settings etc and reset my device in the hope that maybe mobile shell 3.5 might have been at fault but sadly not.
Ive taken a look at the usb port itself and the second pin from the left appears to be very flat in comparrison to its neibours, could someone confirm this please before I start prodding about.
thanks
Do a search in this forum for USB connector -- you will find lots of advice.
Also, if it happens on multiple machines, and you're using the same cable, try a different cable -- these can go bad too.

[Q] Transfer speed issues

I have my Moto X which is an awesome device, BUT
My transfer speed is horrible. It takes 5 minutes to transfer a single picture, ~ 200kb from my desktop to my phone.
I have tried various USB cords, both OEM and other cords, as well as other computers. This is the only device that performs this slowly.
Can anyone help me with this?

I don't know what to tell you besides that's not normal. Maybe you aren't using the most updated drivers for moto. Go download Moto device manager and see if it fixes it. I transferred Ill say 500 but don't quote me pictures in less than 5 minutes. I did a couple times stop transferring them because it would say 30 minutes to transfer but then again i didn't stop it once and it eventually went back down to less than 5 minutes so I don't know. Drivers is my best advice
Any other ideas? Not working, still taking 5 minnutes to transfer a small item over. -_-
Even contacted Moto tier 2 support who was completely useless. Basically told me that im SOL, goodluck.

click reply next time if you want me to know you responded to me. Otherwise it was just change I came by this and remembered posting in it.
Anyway, so you installed moto device manager and had your phone plugged in with MTP so that the device manager ran and updated all of your drivers correct?
You must also have the right cable which I know you said you tried multiple including the one that came with the device. Im assuming you tried multiple usb ports because 3.0 might be causing the problem. Have you tried enabling usb debugging? I'm assuming so.
have you tried a different picture? maybe it is something with the picture itself...
I'm honestly thinking maybe you downloaded moto device manager but then it never updated the phone when you plugged it in. Basically if a web page is not automatically opening every time you plugged your phone in then you didn't update the drivers through moto device manager or you are not connected to the device with MTP but the other option which im blanking on for some reason and don't feel like plugging my phone in. let me know if none of that cleared anything up.

I've tried multiple pictures, and no go. Downloaded the official moto drivers from motorola's site and still the same.
It seems like for some reason the phone wont allow a transfer for the first few minutes when I try to send something over to it. I dont have it encrypted or anything like that, and my USB debugging has been off.
Why would USB 3.0 be causing the problem? All the ports on all the machines I have tried are 3.0... I dont have any USB 2.0 devices...

IDK why usb 3.0 seems to have issues with some things but it does. You can't flash some stuff on your phone with a 3.0 usb port because it will give you errors. I think the technology just isn't fine tuned for all devices yet. Find a 2.0 port or 1.0 and test it out. I use 1.0 ports because I'm never moving enough stuff that the speed really matters and I know those ports are always stable.
