voda v o2 v tmobile - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

I've done a few searches and I don't think this question(s) has been asked before, but if it has just point me in the right direction.
Firstly, i'm looking at getting a diamond on one of the mention networks (orange is out as i'm swapping from orange and they couldn't offer me a decent upgrade package).
So... What i'd like to know is what are the differences in each of the different networks versions of the diamond in software terms (ie I looked at the tmobile mda and noticed that opera and youtube apps were missing). Is it the same on the others? With just the simfree htc diamond coming with opera and youtube installed.
Also, is it possible to reflash all of the handsets back to plain old htc? or are there only particular ones to go for. If so it would then just come down to which network can offer the best tariff (plus i think the mda looks the nicest).
I've also seen someone posting a 'sprint' theme which i think looks even better than htcs original, if i flash back to the original is the sprint theme an add on or does it replace the htc artwork, i'd rather have it replace than add as I don't want to fill the handset with crud.

Hi,
I can only give my views on T-Mobile (i have had MDAs for the last 4 years)
The last phone i got was the HTC Kaiser (or t-mobiles version), which sadly got stolen insurance paid out, and i got a HTC Diamond (original SIM free). i must say thats its nice not having all the T-Mobile branding and crap everywhere.
You could just go for a T-Mobile phone and flash a original HTC ROM if you wanted to have a 'original' feel to it. this would require Hard-SPL and voiding your warrenty (unless u put it back and they dont notice )
I personally would go for the O2 option, as they are known for not changing the phone much from original, and sometimes the handsets arent even network locked!
As far as the Sprint theme goes, it depends on if it is just a theme, or a ROM cooked to look like the Sprint. i had a "Sprint Flavour" ROM, which was just the sprint themes, no original HTC stuff. If you decide you want just the theme, then you will have HTC and Sprint on your phone, unless you get clever and find all the files to remove the HTC stuff.
Hope this helps,

I have the diamond on vodafone... I had Opera and youtube apps as part of the phone ... plus you get satnav software... freeish to use for 18 months.. (just have to download a small bit of data to get started).
Upgrade the rom to vodafones 1.93 and things are a lot better...

o2 comes with Opera, the youtube thingy and TT7 pre-installed. Also with a blueish Manila/TouchFLo theme. A 1.93 ROM (Which speeds up the whole thing by a good amount) is available through their website.

Cheers for the info so far, looking like an o2 or voda version at the mo.
The TT7 on the o2 ignito, is it a trial or the full version?

TT software is free, you have to pay for the maps.
Usually you get to download a small area map (of your choice). Usually just a town or two.
obviously, if you feel like breaking the law you can just download the UK maps from a warez site. NOT HERE!

I have a UK Ignito, it doesn't come with TT, it *is* unlocked (as are all O2 pay monthly handsets AFAIK), and IMO the O2 back is much nicer than the HTC/Vodafone diamond back as it's flat and sort of a matte finish. It also has the full design memory complement
The camera seems to be better than some versions as well, maybe because the back cover window is flat or better quality.
I had the choice of all networks and picked the Ignito as the best, the only thing it doesn't have is QuickGPS (as it is supposedly not necessary, I can't find a version that works on the Ignito so I can't tell whether it makes a useful difference).
I got a good deal from O2 by being persistent (including unlimited data ) so if you go that route let them know that you're considering ALL the alternatives

Same as T-Mobile back cover?

It looks like the ignito has been dropped from the o2 website. There is no product page for it anymore, I doubt the product page would disappear if they had no stock.
Weird??!!??

Yes it looks like it's the same, but isn't the T-Mob one memory crippled ?

Yeah, I noticed it doesn't come up on the shop pages - still there on the XDA microsite though, and I bet they'll find you one if it means getting the money

From gsmarena MDA Compact IV review "The system RAM however has shrunk to 128MB as opposed to 192MB in the HTC Touch Diamond."
The rounded off MDA casing is the nicest IMO though.

But and Also
I prefer GSM900 over 1800, my GF has T-Mob and she frequently (bad area) has no signal where I have no probs on O2
But now I'm jus' gettin' picky

yeh, T-Mobile generally suck on signal, think they may have just taken down a transmitter in my area, my whole family is with T-Mobile, and we all now have ****e signal lol

ditto
No - the O2 'Ignito' (UK) does NOT come with TT
It IS unlocked
...and agreed, the flat back is MUCH better than the faceted diamond, and better feel
I got a good deal going through retentions - which you might try with your current network - retentions always offer the best deals
Also - maybe hold out for the Raphael/Pro?

I also considered a TP/Raphael from Voda but decided that thinner/lighter is better.
I like the Ignito more than I expected although it has its foibles (don't they always?).
Get used to the Qualcomm GPS not being as good as the SirfIII in my Artemis/Orbit though it is *just* tolerable.
If your car has a metallised windscreen you could be in trouble!!
(BTW I'm a hardware engineer and I'm pretty sure it's the GPS antenna that's the problem)

i havent had any problems with GPS... if anything its better than my Kaiser and Artemis!

Thanks for all the info, i've gone with vodafone 18months, £30/mth, 150mins, 500txts, unlimited data(think its capped to 500mb) - (i tried orange retentions and they weren't interested!).
I'll wait n see what stuff is bundled on it, then probably wipe it all off with a new rom and sprint theme =0)

Stick with TYTN, or upgrade to Kaiser?

I have a TYTN with schaps 3.54c WM6 (HTC HOME, kaiser comm mngr) and a BT GPS (MTK based)+2gb.. Mostly used for TT6, email, internet and appointments.
is it worth to upgrade to the kaiser or should I wait for it's successor?

I think you should ask your pocket or wallet this question...
Obviously the tilting screen, built-in GPS, larger memory, and being slightly thinner all makes me want to have it ... but its a matter of $$$$$$$$$$ now
sell your hermes now and recoup some costs then be first to buy kaiser.
I have a sim-only in the hermes and my business contract in my normal phone is due to end in october so I can get it relativly cheap (take a €80/100 dualsim 1 year contract, the its about €100-200 ).
Can the screen do a normal-slide too?
And does it fit in a hermes desktopcradle?

I sold my Hermes (vodafone III 1605) still had the box everything.. got 300 euro for it that's about 400$.. now sitting and waiting with the money in the bank for the kaiser.
I hope to get 150/200 for it, a bit battered because I dropped it once (small crack in body and corner a bit shaved off) but works 100%.
I also sold my 8525 while I could still get the most out of it. Now, I am using a crappy samsung phone until the 8925 or the Tilt comes out! I had long been contemplating on buying a GPS and now my problem will be solved soon!

although If i can come across a cheap tytn 100euro I'll get one
I am also trying to make the same decision. I just got my Hermes (8525) two days ago off of a guy for $220, but now that I see this is about to come out I am tempted to sell it I could probably get $300 or so for it if I do it soon before the tilt comes out. It came with an extra extended 2800 mAh battery and stuff. My motivations for the upgrade would be the obvious ram upgrade but more importantly builtin gps. I really want gps but I haven't purchased a bluetooth gps unit yet. My last concern is that I am with tmobile so I would nee to unlock the phone. How long does it usually take for an unlocker to come out? What are your opinions on everything?
well...I just got rid of my Hermes TyTn...I wasn't trying to make a profit, just trying to get back as much as I put into the phone....
can't wait until the Kaiser is released...

I sold my hermes.... I listed it on craigslist and a guy called me up this mourning and offered me more than I was asking for it if I would meet him. I got $360 for it. I saved him from the tragic fate of paying too much for a Herald he was just about to drop a little more on. he didn't wanna try and unlock an AT&T phone himself he was afraid so he bought mine instead and now he has twice the ponies of a Herald and I have $360 to put towards my kaiser

Yes it slides out normal(like the Hermes) then you can "tilt" it up.
As for the 2nd question, I dont know since the specs of the Kaiser are a tad bit different than that of the hermes
ok.. does someone have a clear bottomside picture to check where the USB port is?
sold my Tytn
I sold it for $500 including a GPS receiver. Waiting to get either a Tilt or an HTC Kaiser depending on the price... it seems the Tilt(AT&T) is going to be around 600 to renew contract do not know how much the Kaiser. It really makes a difference on the two units but more on the money.

Dam I`m defenatly getting Kaiser as soon as it hits the ATT shelfs, but seening how good you guys are selling your phones I`m thinking about selling my first !!! Just dont know what I will do with out it You guys think the prices will drop really bad for the 8525 Hermes Tytn as soon as the kaiser released ?
GO KAISER!!!
I work for AT&T in the U.S. and I met with the HTC reps last week. I played with this thing for an hour and a half. It was amazing!! The best part, they are sending me 2 free ones. One to hack and one to show my customers. I can't freakin wait!!!!
The tilt and the Kaiser are the same thing. We are just calling it the Tilt.
I didn go for it... last month a friend bought one but it didn't convince me shelling out that extra cash for just GPS, slightly sleeker exterior and that bit of extra memory.
Waiting for the TYTN III

AT&T or unlocked HTC retail unit?

OK,
Just trying to start a discussion here about the thought process I'm going through, wanted to see if anyone else was having the same dilemma.
Do I buy an unlocked Kaiser or wait for the Cingular 8925?
1) My wallet tells me to wait for the Cingular device - I'm due for an upgrade, I get a hardware discount through my company, and it is guaranteed to be cheaper.
but.....
2) I watched the unboxing video of the Tytn II retail unit, and it just looks like they threw in lots of goodies, nice case, TomTom software, etc. I doubt AT&T will throw in anything but the phone and a stylus.
and.....
3) we know that the unlocked version is fully featured and won't be crippled at all, whereas the AT&T version may disable GPS (except w/ their service) and/or the ROM may suck compared to the full HTC rom.
and finally.....
4) I can get an unlocked version NOW, versus waiting until god-knows-when (Oct/Nov?) to get an 8925.
The one other thing stopping me from going w/ an unlocked version is it seems to be mainly UK retailers (or US retailer selling a UK version). I want to wait until I can buy one in the U.S., with a U.S. power adapter. Has anyone seen this yet?
Thoughts?
its a tough call for myself im thinking just going HTC unlocked one and then when the 8925 comes out trying to add some of there rom stuff like cingular video app ect as its free with my data plan.
Another reason for the HTC one vrs the ATT one is ATT app locks them so you will have to wait a bit for someone to get a unlocking system working for it. With the 8525 it took 2-4 months if i remember correctly before there was a unlock avil for it.
Pricewise shrug if you can afford the htc one over waiting I would not even consider it then.
Well I CAN afford the HTC unit, doesn't mean I should waste money on it though
Realistically: AT&T unit is the best choice for price.
Preferably: Users on this forum would choose the htc if they can afford/justify it because it wont have nerfed hardware or software which the ATT version is likely to have.
Hoenstly, I would go with the HTC branded version before the AT&T. First, the HTC for sure will have GPS, the front facing camera, HSUPA, the case, and it's alrady unlocked. Worst case scenario, you have to buy a generic charger, or use your old one because it comes with the UK charger which we can't use. There is a lot more that your getting with the phone for the extra money. Especially if you have it to spend. AT&T always finds a way to spoil a situation becuause of their future plans an ideas. If you get the HTC branded Kaiser, at least there are no curve balls and you know that you're getting everything that the phone is capable of.

Why is that? Is it possible that the AT&T model doesn't come with those features???
its more then likely ATT will not have the front camera as they do not support 2way video calling. also if the BB 8800 is any sign they will cripple the internal GPS if not take it out compleatly and force you to use there tower based telanav service.
Man, if I could afford, I would not even be asking this question. I would have a TyTN II on my hand right now.
Good points.
On the charger issue - won't HTC soon release a U.S. retail version of the Kaiser? Or are they prevented from doing so because of their relationship w/ AT&T?
there sales dep they use told me on the phone yesturday they will be selling them. she said they get them in on the 14th and there orders sould start going out on the 18th. Not sure if that ment u can order on the 14th or have to wait till the 18th tho.
Also note there sales dep does do contracts for ATT and all there americas carriers so they may or may not offier the unlocked one.
you can check there sales page from the HTC america site it send you to there sales front of letstalk.com
There has been people on here and other blogs claiming that AT&T may not offer some of these things. For instance, the 8525 didn't have the front camera, the case, and a few other things. AT&T is known for stripping down phones. Plus, even if AT&T doesn't offer the video conferencing now, when they do. you'll already have the capabilities to do it.
I expect the only crippling of GPS will be the lack of free Tom-Tom software. Of course telnav will be on there for them to make money but ATT would not disable GPS as other than that why buy a 8925 if you have a 8525. You can add your own GPS software, however the cost with that may bring you near just buying an unbranded Kaiser in the first place. I am waiting for the flame as to all the other great enhancements by upgrading, but I am talking about real useful stuff...when consumers spend $400 to change PDA it better be for something more than a little more RAM that they probably never maxed out the RAM on the 8525.
Isn't an HTC unlocked phone $800 or so ?
I don't see any point in going that route.
For $350 (probably) with 2 year contract, you'll get the same thing less :
1) front camera. i couldn't care less about that.
2) they MIGHT remove GPS. i have BT gps receiver already, so no issue there. even if you don't already have one, they are 80 bucks and don't suck up your PDA battery life.
3) i have ZERO doubt somebody will unlock this thing in short order. no value there either.
is it really worth $450 bucks to pick up 3 items that aren't of much use ?

Not exactly - the Cingular 8525 released November '06 and the pof free unlocker was out before release day. But recall that the TyTN had been out for almost a year by the time 8525 released - so free unlocker predated 8525 but not TyTN. imei-check had unlockers even earlier.

Actually I'm *hoping* the 128MB RAM brings performance of the Kaiser back up to the level of my iPAQ5555 on Mapopolis. Moving from a "400MHz 128MB" iPAQ to a "400MHz 64MB" 8525/TyTN made Mapopolis MUCH less useful - loading Los Angeles alone kills the 8525, and is quick as a bunny on the iPAQ
I'd pay the upgrade in a heartbeat if I were sure I'd get Mapopolis back up to iPAQ performance! My struggle is $800 to *maybe* get back my performance vs wait and pay $450 to *maybe* get back my performance.
FWIW, I switched from a CF GPS on the iPAQ to a BT GPS because I found reception to be MUCH better having the GPS on the dash of the car vs attached to the iPAQ in my hand. So I like the integrated GPS option, but I don't know that it'll really save me from using my existing BT GPS. GPS has improved a fair bit since my Holux CF days, but I don't know if that'll be enough to overcome the antenna positioning issues.
Just my $0.02,

kept it simple..
my rationalization: post my thoughts in the forum and hope that someone tells me i made the right decision. (just kidding!)
for me the purchase amounts to a redistribution of discretionary spending. i lowered discretionary spending for a few weeks to finance the (irrational) "early adopter" cost of a hot new toy. at the first opportunity i purchased the toy without hesitation. i'll deal with buyer's remorse for 24hrs or until the new toy gets here. once i have the new toy in my hands, the need to rationalize will inexplicably disappear...
in other words, i was willing to pay the premium cost of getting what i wanted when i wanted it. i know i'll enjoy the new toy...lol
just my $0.02 (that i have left after buying the new toy )

TomTom performance on the 8525 certainly beats Mapopolis on that machine, but the UI is years behind: No text-to-speech???? In the 21st century??? WTF! TomTom POI management is a joke compared to Mapopolis, try to add your own Restaurant in TomTom - it's gotta be in a custom category and thus won't show up in all the Restaurant searches.
Yes, I did the wired antenna thing for my CF GPS and it helps, but it's yet one more wire. The BT is wonderful, no wires, better signal.... Don't get me wrong, I'll be tickled if Kaiser GPS is usable!

Orange Diamond Stock

As I am an employee of Orange I thought I would let you know...
We got an email to day to say there are 3000 handsets "in testing" at the moment, it might not be until August that Online Sales, Phone Sales and Stores will see these handsets. By then they will be Orange Branded.
I would take "in testing" to mean they are putting their own version / skin on the TF3D...um NO!
There was ONLY 413 handsets delivered to ONLY the top 100 stores so thats why they will be hard to find if there are any left. These lucky ones where the "Generic" ones.
I was just lucky I was working the day they where delivered to our store and I got my hands on mine or else I still wouldn't have one...No handset charge, £21 per month, 600mins 2000 texts, 250Mb internet bundle, and Free Insurance.
I work in a top 100 store and we only got 4, I bought mine and we sold the other three in 2 days.... We now have waiting list of about 25 people.... deep joy!
Oh! And from what I have been able to gather from speaking to our Tech Support team Orange's HSDPA coverage is pretty much non-existant unless you are in London and you are sitting on-top of a radio mast, so you may aswell switch it off.
I am finding some funny issues with mine at the moment though....
If I receive 2 text messages one after another (within 30 secs of each other) then the phone vibrates constantly until I take the battery out....anyone else had this?
Also, I installed TomTom 7 on it and for some reason "sometimes" when I call someone once the phone call is connected TomTom starts up all on its own....
The only software I have instlled on the device is TomTom 7 and the latest version of the TF3D config.
the phone is running the following configuration:-
ROM Version: 1.37.405.1 WWE
ROM Date: 12/06/2008
Radio Version: 1.00.25.03
Protocol Version 52.26a.25.09W
.G.
I was told by the Orange rep today that the 3000 were about to be released. They're not going to test all 3000, just a small sample.
Then there'd me no more stock till August.
If that turns out not to be the case then I'll cancel my upgrade.

Touch Pro is a HELL of a lot thicker, so if the sleek look and feel of the Diamond is your bag it's not quite there with the Touch Pro.
It's not a 'better' phone as such, more aimed at those who demand QWERTY and extendable storage, though it does still look pretty cool.
Release date is allegedly september 1st, but this could be delayed all the more (remember the Shift anyone?)

It's not a 'better' phone as such, more aimed at those who demand QWERTY and extendable storage, though it does still look pretty cool.
Release date is allegedly september 1st, but this could be delayed all the more (remember the Shift anyone?)

If HTC launch the phone on September 1st then "IF" and only "IF" Orange decide to sell the handset just add about 2 Months to the launch before you would see it in an Orange shop or be able to get it from Orange direct.
e.g. The Diamond was launched, when?... Middle of May?....Only made it into Orange stock 2 months later.
DO NOT phone Orange anytime soon asking if they are doing Touch Pro as we only get about 3 weeks notice (if we are lucky) as to what the phones we will be selling, so nobody will be able to give you an answer, they just want to keep the hype down so that they don't sell out faster than they can get them in.
Also NEVER trust the instore magazine, in my 2 and a half years at Orange I have never ever seen one that has the truth in to for example the July Mag is the first one to have the Diamond in it with it's specification and not as a "Coming Soon" phone, and the mistake they made? They said it had a 5.0Mp camera. Another fave of the magazine people is to publish phones in there as coming soon but then never sell them!
So if you want to Touch Pro on Orange don't hold your breath, you might be lucky and get it just in time for XMAS!
.G.
Also, if you don't like the answer the call centre person gives you, phone up again 5 minutes later - you get a different person and a different answer!
Keep ringing until you get the answer you like. lol
Can i check sth with the person that works for Orange? If we flash our diamond to a better and faster ROM and then sth happens and we have to send it back under warranty, does this invalidate our warranty? cause if we have a generic ROM on the handset, we can always claim it was one of the first ones that were not Orange branded, right?
Thanks

I would say do it, I've never heard of anyone being caught out in two years...
From a legal point of view it does invalidate your warranty...

But does it?
I have not read my current T&C, but I found nothing in previous T&Cs to say specifically that that altering the ROM would invalidate the phone warranty.
Technically if the phone is faulty, then it can be returned under warranty and unless the fault was caused directly by the owner/user, then the warranty should be honoured. So if the ROM change caused the fault then you are out of luck, but just because the ROM as been changed, does not mean the fault is the cause of that - for arguments sake a faulty screen or panel button
As this is an electronic device, then updates and enhancements will naturally become available and so its reasonable to assume that these can and should be applied - arguably in the same was as a PC can be upgraded.
But for those not in the UK, check local laws

Sorry, I'm tired, I was getting things confused in my head, removing the SIM LOCK invalidates the warranty unless you get Orange to do it.
ROM updates are ok...

Coolio! I can update my ROM and its OK!?
I ordered my ROM last saturday online from the Orange website....came on the Tuesday. No Orange branding! Just a small Orange logo on the back of the phone!
Got a few admirers at work. Everyone says its far better looking than the iBrick!
Still in love with my Artemis though! Got iGO8 on both!! ;-)

Good news... now i only have to wait for the diamond to get back in stock as i am eligible for an upgrade on Thursday.
Strange that Vodafone have the handset in stock (in Cambridge anyway) and Orange claim it's going to take a minimum of another couple of weeks... anyway...

Irish Diamond problems

hi there
i have a touch diamond that was got from holland , unlocked and unbranded
rom version 1.35.401.3 WWE
using the Meteor pre pay network
last week the when making calls the person at the end of the line can not hear a thing im saying
anything I can do to fix this ?
step by step guides ?
thanks
Joe
Wooo! Another Diamond user in Ireland!
I'm also on Meteor pre-pay, but I have a Diamond from the UK (1.37.405.1 WWE). I've had no problems with calls or texts or anything...apart from mobile internet.
The built-in connection settings for Meteor are just wrong. They don't work at all. The WAP settings are available elsewhere on the internet, but I've managed to acquire (after confusing Meteor customer care quite a lot, because they've obviously never even heard of HTC) working mobile internet settings. The only problem is that their prices are ridiculous (2c per KB)...but at least I can check emails and the weather if I really need to.
If anyone wants the proper Meteor mobile internet settings, just ask (or phone customer care...and be prepared for a long conversation).
Oh, getting back to the original problem, have you tried your device on any other network? I would really doubt that the problem is Meteor-specific, because I've never had any problems using HTC devices on Meteor. BTW, aren't the new pre-pay deals really cool? Not sure about that magic mobile genie though...
Alright lads! Where did you get your Diamonds? and for how much? I'm trying to bring one into Ireland, cheapest way?
I would also hazard a guess that it's a phone specific problem, have you tried flashing a different rom?
Meteor Pre Pay here btw... I'm signed up to the 3G test, I get free 3G till the end of August! woohoo! They'll have PAYG deals when they release to the public in October.
i got it from Capti-lux in hollands airport, phone is great like but need to sort out why people cant hear me on it though ! ha
i ever bothered with the internet settings for it as i use the wireless when needed for emails etc , and the 3g will be out in october

This may be just me, but I would try upgrading the radio. I've had the same issues with some of my other htc phones and it always fixed it for me.
I am on Vodafone and no problem with HTC DT on 3G in Galway. I have flashed it with a Diamond Project ROM including the latest radio and had to fix the access point to hs.vodafone.ie
Got mine on Ebay this week from all4ustore_lv for €450, paid last Friday, got delivered this Tuesday! Scary part is the insurance, it shipped as a memory module with value of £50. If you are a frequent visitor to Paddy Power then I suppose you can take this gamble too...

The cheapest way to get a Diamond is probably to get one from eBay or the UK. Some websites don't like delivering to random countries though, so you might have to physically go to a shop if you don't like the eBay. I wonder if they're available in Northern Ireland - I can't see any reason for them not being available there...
3G test! I heard about that, but as I'm only in Ireland erratically I've never really investigated it. I'm here for a while now though - how did you sign up to the 3G test? On 3G do they still charge that crazy 2c per KB? Also, how good is the 3G network (coverage, speed, etc.)?

Flashing in 2 steps:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=408621
hardspl 1.24
ROM of your choice such as:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=407572
Direct download link:
http://duttythroy.net/downloads/ind...DiamProject_V2_5.2.19965_Radio_1.00.25.06.zip
Follow the instructions and backup anything important.
Ordered the Diamond from the UK the day it was released. Upgraded the rom to Dutty's Diamond Project and it works a treat. On O2 network and getting a Gig a month for €15 so thats pretty good. After Flashing with Dutty's ROM I have freed up about 20% more memory so it runs much smoother.
ok ill try and do that over the weekend , thanks all
ok iv seem to have got it working now again

Is that on some kind of contract?
1GB would cost €20,971.52 on Meteor.

Isn't the "B" stock all of those returned grey imports from HK? Thanks for the tip about TomTom7 in Ireland.
Hey lads, living in the south and I've ordered the Diamond, should have it in a few days.
Up until now I've been using an old Acer n310 (WM5 and no phone capabilities and linked via bluetooth to a GPS module) with iGo 2006 (for about a year) and iGo8 (for the last 2 months). I've been trying TomTom 6 on and off. My job involves driving all around Munster and the iGo maps are far better to the TomTom 6 maps; more complete in terms of small roads, and more road and townland labelling. Also higher accuracy. So I'll be using iGo8 on the Diamond too. I definitely recommend it.
I'd been connecting the Acer to my bluetooth phone to use the internet and get my emails. I'm on O2 billpay and 250mb is €7.50 a month, which is great value. So the Diamond will mean one device instead of 3 for getting my emails, making calls, and navigating around the place.
Isn't there an issue that using alternative ROMs will cause the AGPS to stop working?
TomTom 6 uses the older navtek maps, TomTom7 uses the latest Teleatlas maps, which for W.Cork anyway seemed to have every little road, if you could call it a road. Some of the little lanes in W.Cork just aren't good for your suspension, I mean they are smaller than the width of my car and rougher than the dark side of the moon!
Using TomTom 7 on my Diamond + Uk/Ie Maps been to dublin cork waterford and never had any problems.

Is there any difference between Diamond2 and Compact V?

Just been told by T-M that my Compact V that I ordered last Friday is not coming as it's out of stock. Also they want to pay £65+7 (upgrade+delivery) for Flex35 tariff while for the same monthly amount unlocked D2 is for free e.g. on mobilephonesdirect.co.uk (Combi30+w'n'w).
Is there any reason to wait for Compact V? Or there is just an aesthetic difference between the two?
Unlike the unlocked version directly from HTC the MDA Compact V will have some interesting additional software add-ons. TouchFlo3D will, like their older products, have a tab filled with widgets, for example for facebook and twitter.
In addition the device will come with a 2 GB microSD card and a 7 day trial of the CoPilot GPS navigation software, with the first 10,000 customers to register getting a free 18-month subscription to the navigation service.
Compliments of wmpoweruser dot com.
Google, who knew?

I got a case with the D2.
the most notable difference would be the exterior. The compact V has a rounded bottom, and the dimensions all around are slightly different. This made me go for the original TD2, to find a cradle and car holder more easily.

This appears to be the killer flaw in the Compact V design - they have fitted a rubber cover over the connector at the bottom so it cannot slide directly into a car holder. Apparently there are gaps either side of the connector which are exposed if you remove the rubber cover so this isn't a practical option either.
Does anyone actually know how you get the 18 months free on co-pilot working ? Mine just seems to have 7 days free !

I've been on the phone about this several times.
Noone at t-mobile will admit to this offer ... they say I have to speak o co-pilot ...
Then all co-pilot people say they don't know about it and I have to speak to t-mobile.
Going round in circles.

You have to of taken an 18 month contract to recieve the free Co-pilot. The Press release is on the T-mobile website. Goto this link - http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/services/about-t-mobile/media-centre/ and look for the one titled "The Fifth Element".
It explains it in there, so T-mobile have no excusses!!!

To be honest I have tried the trial of Co-Pilot and far prefer TomTom. I just cannot get the postcodes in TomTom to work (even after applying the postcodes 'fix').
D2 has no usb cover on the bottom, DV has a clip in cover.
D2 has more camera options than the DV.
DV has useless tabs on TF3D like widgets and TV and Video....they do nothing but direct you to the tmobile homepage. You could do the same thing by clicking Internet. I think on the D2 they have Camera and something else as a tab?
DV has no facebook intergration available.
D2 is better at handling downloaded software
DV comes with a 2GB card (1.5 GB is taken up with the copilot trial software)
D2 comes with no card in the box
DV has no HTC branding whatsoever apart from the battery.
DV has no flippy clock and the home screen doesnt flip up like the D2
I think the curvy look of the Compact V is much better looking than the boxy D2. Only annoying thing is the Tmobile ROM with its pink theme and useless tabs. But I like the speed of the ROM. It is very snappy. I wonder whether its worth flashing as I want to get rid of the Tmobile crap but I really dont want to mess the speed after flashing ROM. Anyone already flashed any ROM could comment>?
update on the copilot offer - spoke to T-mobile a few times and eventually told to speak to ALK Services, the makers of Copilot. THey told me that YES, Copilot live is to be offered on an 18 month subscription BUT this offer starts on 8 July 2009. I've just arranged to return my newly acquired TD2 (on their 7 day return policy) with a view to re-ordering in a couple of weeks

I've flashed to a custom rom from that pink T-Mobile nonsense and it works a treat. I did the same with my compact iv. Just make sure that you follow all the instructions of our esteemed members on the forum if you are unfamiliar with flashing to a new rom.
The handset now runs quicker and takes advantage of the all of the features HTC intended ( + a few extras thanks to the chefs !).
Hope that helps,
mickey

I flashed my ROM the day that I got my phone, yes the Compact V T-Mobile ROM was fast, faster then my custom Duty ROM on Diamond 1.but the newer Rom is faster still. I went for Tom Topaz WM6.1 for now, will look again in a month or so to see if there is something better out.
