Is there any difference between Diamond2 and Compact V? - Touch Diamond2, Pure Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just been told by T-M that my Compact V that I ordered last Friday is not coming as it's out of stock. Also they want to pay £65+7 (upgrade+delivery) for Flex35 tariff while for the same monthly amount unlocked D2 is for free e.g. on mobilephonesdirect.co.uk (Combi30+w'n'w).
Is there any reason to wait for Compact V? Or there is just an aesthetic difference between the two?

Unlike the unlocked version directly from HTC the MDA Compact V will have some interesting additional software add-ons. TouchFlo3D will, like their older products, have a tab filled with widgets, for example for facebook and twitter.
In addition the device will come with a 2 GB microSD card and a 7 day trial of the CoPilot GPS navigation software, with the first 10,000 customers to register getting a free 18-month subscription to the navigation service.
Compliments of wmpoweruser dot com.
Google, who knew?

I got a case with the D2.

the most notable difference would be the exterior. The compact V has a rounded bottom, and the dimensions all around are slightly different. This made me go for the original TD2, to find a cradle and car holder more easily.

This appears to be the killer flaw in the Compact V design - they have fitted a rubber cover over the connector at the bottom so it cannot slide directly into a car holder. Apparently there are gaps either side of the connector which are exposed if you remove the rubber cover so this isn't a practical option either.

Does anyone actually know how you get the 18 months free on co-pilot working ? Mine just seems to have 7 days free !
cheers,

I've been on the phone about this several times.
Noone at t-mobile will admit to this offer ... they say I have to speak o co-pilot ...
Then all co-pilot people say they don't know about it and I have to speak to t-mobile.
Going round in circles.
If I can get the postcodes in TomTom working I'll be happy!!!!!

You have to of taken an 18 month contract to recieve the free Co-pilot. The Press release is on the T-mobile website. Goto this link - http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/services/about-t-mobile/media-centre/ and look for the one titled "The Fifth Element".
It explains it in there, so T-mobile have no excusses!!!

P.S If anyone has recieved the free Co-Pilot on a 12 month contract and are on Friends And Family deal then please let me know. Because I can then argue my case to get it!!!

Difference:
There seems to be an issue with changing left softkey of MDA V. Entry of path will be ignored.

Thanks for that.
I did take out an 18month contract and was one of the first to get the phone ... however T-Mobile still refuse to admit that this offer exists!!!
To be honest I have tried the trial of Co-Pilot and far prefer TomTom. I just cannot get the postcodes in TomTom to work (even after applying the postcodes 'fix').

D2 has no usb cover on the bottom, DV has a clip in cover.
D2 has more camera options than the DV.
DV has useless tabs on TF3D like widgets and TV and Video....they do nothing but direct you to the tmobile homepage. You could do the same thing by clicking Internet. I think on the D2 they have Camera and something else as a tab?
DV has no facebook intergration available.
D2 is better at handling downloaded software
DV comes with a 2GB card (1.5 GB is taken up with the copilot trial software)
D2 comes with no card in the box
DV has no HTC branding whatsoever apart from the battery.
DV has no flippy clock and the home screen doesnt flip up like the D2

I think the curvy look of the Compact V is much better looking than the boxy D2. Only annoying thing is the Tmobile ROM with its pink theme and useless tabs. But I like the speed of the ROM. It is very snappy. I wonder whether its worth flashing as I want to get rid of the Tmobile crap but I really dont want to mess the speed after flashing ROM. Anyone already flashed any ROM could comment>?

update on the copilot offer - spoke to T-mobile a few times and eventually told to speak to ALK Services, the makers of Copilot. THey told me that YES, Copilot live is to be offered on an 18 month subscription BUT this offer starts on 8 July 2009. I've just arranged to return my newly acquired TD2 (on their 7 day return policy) with a view to re-ordering in a couple of weeks

I've flashed to a custom rom from that pink T-Mobile nonsense and it works a treat. I did the same with my compact iv. Just make sure that you follow all the instructions of our esteemed members on the forum if you are unfamiliar with flashing to a new rom.
The handset now runs quicker and takes advantage of the all of the features HTC intended ( + a few extras thanks to the chefs !).
Hope that helps,
mickey

Thats good to know.
What rom did you use?

I flashed my ROM the day that I got my phone, yes the Compact V T-Mobile ROM was fast, faster then my custom Duty ROM on Diamond 1.but the newer Rom is faster still. I went for Tom Topaz WM6.1 for now, will look again in a month or so to see if there is something better out.
Out of interest, has anyone got the G sensor to work when viewing pictures, it worked on the original Diamond but not on the Compact V.
Also has anyone got Opera text to reflow if zooming with the zoom bar?

wow.. the Xperia x1 looks amazing!!! does anyone know the release date here in America? this is probably going to be my next phone.
which phone?
If the Xperia X1 lives up to the specs I have seen that would be my choice. If not (money no object) I think the Athena. But I would have to take my time and try different devices. I would likely have a larger device (Athena or Imate 7150 or 9502) for the power when I have the storage space to carry it, with a smaller device for everyday carry.

According to Engadgetmobile the X1 will be available during the second half of 2008. http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/10/sonyericsson-xperia-x1-qwerty-with-windows-mobile/.
For now, I'd go with the HTC Kaiser. I think it's a solid device. I got mines a few weeks ago and loving it. I already flashed it several times with dutty's roms, even switched carriers (tmobile to AT&T) because I was fed up with the mms issues I was having with the 6.1 roms for my herald. Since I switched carriers, I haven't experienced no more mms problems, and enjoy 3g connection, which is much faster than tmobile's edge. Just my two cents
Like everyone else has said, the X1.
Why? Basically, better features, 400MHz, all the good stuff, ya heard? lol
One thing in particular...I heard (actual read, rumors maybe?) is that this phone is going to sell for about $300-400. Do you have any idea how great that sounds? It's even cheaper than the iPhone, but let's not get my hopes up.

I'll be using herald as my phone but for pocket pc related tasks, I'll have the mighty ipaq for those purposes. And since herald will be there with me always, I'll have a 'backup' pocket pc too

Upgrade Advice

I currently have a Kaiser (HTC TyTnII on UK Orange) but have only just looked into the HTC Touch Diamond... and wow, does it look nice!
On the Orange website it's saying I can't upgrade my phone until May next year. eBay has the Diamond at around £350.
So, I guess I'm wondering if anyone can advise me. Are Orange likely to cut me a deal if I call them up? I guess I'm bound to a contract with them at present so I can't say I'm leaving them. Will it be easiest just to buy one from eBay?
Is it worth it? Is the Touch Pro out or coming out soon? Should I wait for that?

If you can't upgrade until May then you'll get little joy out of Orange I'm afraid. You have to be in the last three months of your contract before they'll let you upgrade. However, saying that you've got nothing to lose by calling them and you may be able to get a deal if you change your package to a more expensive one.
Cal them first before going the eBay route - as I said you've got nothing to lose.
Is it worth it? Hell, yeah! I was torn between the Diamond and waiting for the Pro, but impatience got the better of me and I plumped for the Diamond.
Even though I've only had it a day I can definitely say that it is fantastic! It's up to you if you want to wait for the Pro. I've come from a TyTN II myself and I sat back and really thought about it before going for the Diamond, and basically asked myself two questions:
1. How often did I use the keypad? Very rarely, maybe three times in the eight months that I owned the phone.
2. How much free space did I have on my 4Gb SD card? 2.5Gb, so for me having 4Gb of non-upgradable storage wasn't an issue.
The final thing that swung it for me was the size of the thing. It's good to have a PDA that's "phone sized", rather than being a huge brick.
Thats a good idea Have a word with Orange and twist there arms, see what you can do. I think my missus is due an Upgrade in August and im sure she will go for the Diamond (but as shes skint, I think shes gonna put it on eBay!!!!!!!)
I love my diamond and have used phones with hardware keyboards and like the post above says, how often do you really use it?
Software professionals and IT gurus would probably miss it as im sure using a hardware keyboard and using the Remote Desktop software is a great combination, but the VGA screen is excellent on the Diamond, its the best phone ive ever owned (and ive had quite a few...see my signature!)
Diamond = Thumbs up. Theres sooo much software and tweaks out at the moment with more software coming out just around the corner!
The futures bright, the futures...errr...Diamond? hehe!

Wow, how did you cope without the keypad? I think I probably use it 10-20 times a day and this is the main reason I'm holding back on upgrading I guess.
It looks a fantastic piece of kit... but I don't think I'd like using an onscreen keyboard
How long have you been with Orange?
If it's over a couple of years remind them how much money they have had off you and if that doesn't work tell them you will consider cancelling the contract. Generally they want to keep customers so will eventually give in.
Also, it's always good to ask to speak to their line manager if they can't help.

voda v o2 v tmobile

I've done a few searches and I don't think this question(s) has been asked before, but if it has just point me in the right direction.
Firstly, i'm looking at getting a diamond on one of the mention networks (orange is out as i'm swapping from orange and they couldn't offer me a decent upgrade package).
So... What i'd like to know is what are the differences in each of the different networks versions of the diamond in software terms (ie I looked at the tmobile mda and noticed that opera and youtube apps were missing). Is it the same on the others? With just the simfree htc diamond coming with opera and youtube installed.
Also, is it possible to reflash all of the handsets back to plain old htc? or are there only particular ones to go for. If so it would then just come down to which network can offer the best tariff (plus i think the mda looks the nicest).
I've also seen someone posting a 'sprint' theme which i think looks even better than htcs original, if i flash back to the original is the sprint theme an add on or does it replace the htc artwork, i'd rather have it replace than add as I don't want to fill the handset with crud.
Regards
veearrsix
Hi,
I can only give my views on T-Mobile (i have had MDAs for the last 4 years)
The last phone i got was the HTC Kaiser (or t-mobiles version), which sadly got stolen insurance paid out, and i got a HTC Diamond (original SIM free). i must say thats its nice not having all the T-Mobile branding and crap everywhere.
You could just go for a T-Mobile phone and flash a original HTC ROM if you wanted to have a 'original' feel to it. this would require Hard-SPL and voiding your warrenty (unless u put it back and they dont notice )
I personally would go for the O2 option, as they are known for not changing the phone much from original, and sometimes the handsets arent even network locked!
As far as the Sprint theme goes, it depends on if it is just a theme, or a ROM cooked to look like the Sprint. i had a "Sprint Flavour" ROM, which was just the sprint themes, no original HTC stuff. If you decide you want just the theme, then you will have HTC and Sprint on your phone, unless you get clever and find all the files to remove the HTC stuff.
Hope this helps,
I have the diamond on vodafone... I had Opera and youtube apps as part of the phone ... plus you get satnav software... freeish to use for 18 months.. (just have to download a small bit of data to get started).
Upgrade the rom to vodafones 1.93 and things are a lot better...
o2 comes with Opera, the youtube thingy and TT7 pre-installed. Also with a blueish Manila/TouchFLo theme. A 1.93 ROM (Which speeds up the whole thing by a good amount) is available through their website.
Cheers for the info so far, looking like an o2 or voda version at the mo.
The TT7 on the o2 ignito, is it a trial or the full version?
TT software is free, you have to pay for the maps.
Usually you get to download a small area map (of your choice). Usually just a town or two.
obviously, if you feel like breaking the law you can just download the UK maps from a warez site. NOT HERE!

I have a UK Ignito, it doesn't come with TT, it *is* unlocked (as are all O2 pay monthly handsets AFAIK), and IMO the O2 back is much nicer than the HTC/Vodafone diamond back as it's flat and sort of a matte finish. It also has the full design memory complement
The camera seems to be better than some versions as well, maybe because the back cover window is flat or better quality.
I had the choice of all networks and picked the Ignito as the best, the only thing it doesn't have is QuickGPS (as it is supposedly not necessary, I can't find a version that works on the Ignito so I can't tell whether it makes a useful difference).
I got a good deal from O2 by being persistent (including unlimited data ) so if you go that route let them know that you're considering ALL the alternatives

I prefer GSM900 over 1800, my GF has T-Mob and she frequently (bad area) has no signal where I have no probs on O2

No - the O2 'Ignito' (UK) does NOT come with TT
It IS unlocked
...and agreed, the flat back is MUCH better than the faceted diamond, and better feel
I got a good deal going through retentions - which you might try with your current network - retentions always offer the best deals
Also - maybe hold out for the Raphael/Pro?
I also considered a TP/Raphael from Voda but decided that thinner/lighter is better.
I like the Ignito more than I expected although it has its foibles (don't they always?).
Get used to the Qualcomm GPS not being as good as the SirfIII in my Artemis/Orbit though it is *just* tolerable.
If your car has a metallised windscreen you could be in trouble!!
(BTW I'm a hardware engineer and I'm pretty sure it's the GPS antenna that's the problem)
i havent had any problems with GPS... if anything its better than my Kaiser and Artemis!
Thanks for all the info, i've gone with vodafone 18months, £30/mth, 150mins, 500txts, unlimited data(think its capped to 500mb) - (i tried orange retentions and they weren't interested!).
I'll wait n see what stuff is bundled on it, then probably wipe it all off with a new rom and sprint theme =0)

Kaiser, is still a worth buy??

Hi to all, I'm a quite happy owner of a orbit2 (aka Polaris).
A few days ago I was wondering in a used marcket and I found a used Kaiser at a price that it was impossible a year ago.
I need a second mobile phone and I'm wondering if kaiser is still a wotrh buy, now that there are G1 and G2.
So I ask my question to the Kaiser community....
Thanks to any suggestion
Yes Kaiser\Tilt still worth buy @ good price...
Probably not going to get an unbiased view in a Kaiser\Tilt forum section

Yes, you're probably right, it's difficult that I could have an unbiased answer, but I think that kaiser owner could be disappointed of their device or are looking forward to the new tech, maybe without lack of driver
And I find it at 200 euros...is it a good price?? I think so, maybe because I buy my polaris a year ago at 400
I had the Tilt over a year ago and sold it but just bought another one on eBay days ago for around 190 US.
Worth the buy to me...

Totally agree will possibly find some unhappy Kaiser users
Not sure on the currency value of £ to € in UK £150 - £200 is a good price, the Kaiser is still a very good device, driver issue really not a bigee "well not to me"
Also many ROMs to choose from and the lovely Tilt Keyboard only on TP2 too.
Yep i'm biased

I too am biased. Bought mine on Ebay a year ago for $275US and with all the ROMS to choose from nowadays it hard not to be happy with it.
My Nokia N95 recently died, and so I went hunting on eBay for a new phone (I wanted a Windows Mobile device this time).
I came across the Kaiser at £125 buy it now, so bought it. This was about 2 weeks ago, and I'm planning on putting it back up on eBay now
It's a nice phone, but it's not without it's problems that really annoy me.
The keyboard - I much preferred the number pad on my N95 with the T9 predictive text. The Kaiser has T9, but you still have to use the QWERTY keyboard
No 3.5mm headphone socket. I bought an adapter, and after 4 days of use it fell to pieces this morning.
Stylus - I've lost the pen once already, but found it again in the library.
Crashes - I'm running the Ultimate X V2 ROM, and so far today it's crashed 3 times on me today
No graphics drivers - means I can't play graphics accelerated games, and normal games become laggy
Games become laggy even moreso when you touch the screen whilst playing
If you receive a text and can't view it straight away, if the phone is in your pocket all the touchscreen gets pressed and opens loads of programs

I'm sure there's more but I can't think of it right now!

I picked mine up for £90 on ebay which included the case, spare battery and docking station, bargin or what.
Thomas, I changed from a N95 also to this and I wouldnt go back, try a different ROM, Im using Chinhe wm 6.5F 21501. WM 6.5 is so much better then 6.1 and the Manila 2d interface is excellent. Add a few extra apps like youtube, MyPlayer (BBC I-Player) and shed loads of other things and you will have a excellent device, drop me a pm if you like and ill let you know how i set mine out and you will love it
It all comes down to preference. Personally, I wouldn't buy another tilt for two reasons: VGA screens are MUCH nicer for web browsing, and the recessed screen is substantially less finger-friendly.
Aside from those two issues, though, it's a pretty solid device. I think the Touch Pro is a pretty solid step up, but the Tilt might be worth it depending on price.
I got rid of my Kaiser when I bought both a G1 and a Raphael: G1 is gone and I bought another Kaiser. The Kaiser is cheap (around $165 on ebay if timed right), still more powerful than most phones, super-reliable and strong. Add in the fact that you can unlock them for free and all the software available and this one is sticking with me until it dies. Honestly, the Raphael's screen is nice, but it really doesn't FEEL any faster than the Kaiser. So in the end, all you get is more ram, a sharper screen, and a G-sensor...for $150 more than a Kaiser.
£90 is a bargain!
My Kaiser was on Orange originally, and although it's now unlocked, on any ROM except the Orange (or so it seems) it sends every text twice and charges me double!
I'll have a look at the I-Player software... but I tried Manilla 2D and didn't really like it that much (I seem to have contrasting opinions to everyone else here ).
Now I've got a stable ROM running I must say it is growing on me, especially as I enjoy developing software in C#, and Windows Mobile has the .NET Compact Framework.
Well im currently running Chinhe wm 6.5 21501 v3 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=509576) . It is quite a lite package but so far it is very stable add to that the Manilla 2d thats pre installed and add the 'New HTC' skin it looks sooooo nice, ive showed it to all my mates including IPhone owners and they have been blown away. I can highly recommend the last FM app (Uk owners only) for live streaming music.
When using the iplayer (myplayer) u need to tweak it to use the steaming player that comes preinstalled.
Ive attached a few goodies for you all, enjoy ya phones, I was a Nokia fan for for 12 years but now im a HTC convert.
I just tried to sell my AT&T Tilt on eBay, not once but twice with a starting price of $150 and didn't get a single bid! If anyone here is interested in it, you can PM me or e-mail me at [email protected]
It has a few scuffs, and a piece of the trim by the SIM holder is broken off, but it works fine (just have to be careful when you are putting the SIM in).

Thats where you went wrong, starting at $150 way to high, if im surfing ebay for something I watch Items and bid at the last min, like what most people do. Start at 99c you will get a hell of alot more interest then $150.
i have the tmobile kaiser since more then 18 months now, quite happy with it. however the newer models from HTC seem to be better and even the latest symbian's from nokia would be worth a try.
depends more on preference / usage / pricing / etc.
you guys in uk get excellent deals with your service providers...
so check everything b4 u decide.

Replacement for XDAIIi

I've enjoyed the XDAIIi but it's getting too long in the tooth now.
Can anyone suggest a modern replacement unlocked PDA available in the UK for use with an existing O2 SIM?
I like the 3.5" screen, the app multitasking and the stylus rather than a purely touch screen...
Doubling as a GPS navigator would be great too.
Something like the iPhone would be fun but it strikes me as too fiddly to do the amount of typing and word processing I like to do.
Thanks for any suggestions...
M
Anyone got the URL of a helpful XDA forum?
Coucou !
What about a HTC Touch Pro2 ??? Also called Rhodium here and there?
Screen 3,6", aGPS included...
For me, one of the best nowadays!
OK thanks.
One additional factor is that I get a corporate discount on the iPhone, so £200 cheaper than the HTC...
I've ordered one but am still not sure I've made the right choice.

Hey Mus , I am desparate to get an iPhone but simply can't afford one at the moment.
I have a Nokia N95 8Gb to either sell to someone/ some company or sort out a part ex deal.
I reckon I can sell my Nokia ( an amazing phone , incidently but not as nifty as an iPhone) for about £100 .
If you don't like your iPhone , please contact me
PS You couldn't order another one through your company ( FOR ME ) Nudge Nudge Wink Wink !
Well, there are contractual obligations that I would think twice about for friends and family and wouldn't even consider on behalf of a stranger...
I sent the iPhone back until I can properly check the alternatives

That does look good. Or I might be able to get a Touch HD 2.
The main thing I need to consider is how different is WinMo 6 from WM2003? Is being able to use a stylus and multitask worth forgoing the apps, surfing and multimedia whizzbang of the iPhone or has HTC caught up with that a little?
Unlike the iPhone it's hard to find a live device to play with in a shop.
Coucou!
I understand it's barely available in shop to "play" with...
But for all you're asking for, it's perfect. Not as smooth, sadly, as an iPhone, but much more improvable (correct word?), may be as efficient, and so pleasant to use with the Manilla interface.
Really, I won't change my Rhodium for an iPhone, even with money!
OK thanks.
How much of an improvement is WM 6 over 2003? Is it faster surfing, does it do flash streaming? Generally I switch graphics off on the XDA over GPRS.
M
OK, so it's much of a muchness with WM2003 then? No improvements?
Coucou!
Of course, there are lots of improvements, graphic interface, usage, memory, applications, .......... and ......... and .........
You can read everywhere what are the improvements.......
Yeah, just wish I could find a live one to try out for myself.
I went to an O2 shop and they didn't have one and say they have been selling less and less WinMo phones. They said they have stopped offering the XDA range and don't expect to stock the Touch HD 2 until January if at all.
Don't know if all that is true but I really dislike Apple for making every manufacturer think that a stylus is old hat. For typing the Apple is not a business phone, it's a consumer toy.
The Touch Pro 2 does look good , though I am reluctant to pay full price for it.
Tried out a live Hero yesterday - iPhone wannabe with less useful apps (for me)
Wonder what happened to that patent HTC took out on a capacitative stylus?
The 3g shop said they used to sell the Touch Pro 2 but nobody ever bought one so they stopped.
Also why aren't the prices of the Touch Pro 2 at rock bottom if there is no demand?
