exchange the HDD with the SDD - Shift Development

I like to exchange the harddisk with SDD 60Gb 1.8-inch the MK4008GAH and the MK6008GAHLIF for electronic (CE) devices, (Low Insertion Force)
8x54x71mm. Reduced footprint vs. current 1.8 inch HDD
IF I UNDERSTAND IT WELL both has a zif connector
Anybody who can confirm this will work and fit???

Check the height of the drive, if it is 5mm it will fit just fine, if it is 8mm you'll struggle. you'll need to remove most if not all of the protective material around the drive bay, and even then you may have problems with the sim card, as the drive will press hard on the slot.
The MK6008GAH you mention has the correct connection (lif) but is an 8mm drive.
I've just bought an 80Gb drive, not arrived yet but it's on its way. EDIT - Now fitted and working fine, dual booting Vista and XP.
Its an MK8025GAL, which is 5mm high.

Thanks Pantaloonie
I will check that and thanks for your quick response
I can take your HD alternative if the SDD will not match the 5 mm

And any suggestions with SSD?

Im also interested in this. Have anyone tried an SSD yet? Thanks!

How to Upgrade the Shift to 100GB

This guide adds to the disassemble guide found in the Shift section. I will show you how to successfully install a 100GB Toshiba hard drive.
1) Follow the disassemble guide until the back cover on the Shift is removed.
2) Carefully pull back the tape found on the ribbon cable connecting to the hard drive.
3) Pull gently the ribbon cable that connects to the hard drive interface. I used pliers with electrical tape around the pinchers to not scuff/scratch the ribbon cable. The hard drive connector is of LIF type (Low Insertion Force) meaning it's on there simply by pressure and not secured by any clips. It should slide out easily.
4) Remove the rubber casing around the hard drive and store somewhere. It can't be used with the 8mm 100GB hard drive due to the depth difference between the two. (trust me... i tried).
5) Using a thin rubber patch (like those for bike tires/air mattresses), place it in the area where the 100GB hard drive will sit, in this way the drive sits on top of the rubber patch.
6) Push the ribbon cable into the LIF connector on the Toshiba 100GB Hard Drive. It should slide in fairly easily. Note: there are no audible clicks, just push it in as far as you can and secure it with the tape the same way the 40GB was.
7) Close the back cover and secure it with the screws. It should close fairly snug in the area where the 100GB is; nonetheless, it should close. If it doesn't, check your drive positioning.
8) Follow the disassemble guide to replace the keyboard (do the reverse).
9) Boot the system and the BIOS will automatically detect the new 100GB drive!
10) Enjoy! (remember, this is just a guide... i am not responsible for damages or warranty void)
Hello,
Thanks for this guide...
This is the very same HDD I installed into my Shift. You wrote :

I had to sort out the Rubber thing too.
But on you picture, the rubber is still in place... So, just to make it crystal-clear to readers: confirming this is the rubber that should be removed (following maestro2mil's advice) or modified...

do you need to have copied accross the recovery image onto the 100gb drive (from the existing 40gb one) before you can do this?

No, you can avoid that (as you will need a specific adapter in order to have the 100GB plugged via USB. One time adapter in this case). You should make a HDD image of your 40GB before taking it out the Shift, put it onto a external HDD or a USB dongle, then back to the 100GB once it is installed. Using Acronis or equivalent tool.
If you want to start from scratch, with the recovery partition, then go for search in the forum, there is several ways to do it : copying it while hidden, via Linux tools or have it visible, before using Acronis tool.
[editing] Of course, you may want to have the recovery partition copied to keep the recovery capability on-board. Not really necessary if you keep safe aside a clean image of the former 40GB HDD partition.
Hi Folks
Thanks alot for all this information! I am absolutely keen to do that to, so would you please specify wht drive exactly you've bougth and used and what I may additionally need for the upgrade? I already have an image of the Shift for install via USB ready and waiting ...
Thanks alot!

Hello Lutzh,
Please, have a careful reading to this thread :

Regarding the Hard Drive model used here: just look at the pictures!
Hi Yann
Thanks for the feedback - I did what you've said and I got one on eBay for 90 €, so now I am waiting for delivery...

LIF or ZIF or... ?
Hi ,I am new to this forum , live in germany and sorry for my poor english ( only with dictionary )
Can anyone help, because of my bad english it is hard, to translate all threads and postst.
Here is my question:
I am a bit confused about new HDD for shift.
I read, we need LIF-connector
In an other thread ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=385578 ) they write , we need ZIF-connector.
What is the difference and what is correct?
I am thinking about buying a shift and about a new HDD.
Do I need a " GAH " or a " GAL " ? Or what should I order?
http://www.sdd.toshiba.com/main.aspx...ives/MK8025GAL
Thank You for Your help and sorry for my poor english.
Best regards!
T. Brumm
Hi T
I am expecting delivery this days - since I am German too, I'll report my experiences then, ok?
Lutz
Hello t.brumm,
I'm the one mentionning ZIF... I wonder why!
I added a post in the thread you're mentionning to correct my mistake...
HTC Shift is using a 40GB HDD with LIF connector so the model you plan to buy is quite ok.
"GAH" or "GAL" are not related to connector : HTC Shift is shipping with a MK400GAL and I changed it for a MK1011GAH, osome others for a MK1214GAH, etc...
Definitely, go for the MK8025GAL is it has the suitable heigh (5mm). Much more easy to make it fit into the case than those 8mm models.
Hello Yann,
thank You so much for Your help.
It is really not easy, to read all posts with dictionary. So Your answer becomes special importance for me.
But, The MK8025GAL has here 8mm, not 5mm!? What is correct?
http://www.storage.toshiba.eu/index.php?id=3&pid=229&sid=3
May I ask still an other question?
I have a desktop pc , which has a hidden recovery-partition too.
I did try to visible this partition (like it is written here ) but this does not work. ( maybe, because I have Windows XP and not Vista ? )
Then I used " Powerquest Drive Image 7 ".
This program sees the hidden partition and I can backup this hidden partition to another HDD too!
If I restore it somewhere on my HDD, this partition is not hidden anymore, it is visible and with " Partition Magic 7 " I can not hide this partition.
If I would do this on the shift ( I would like to change the HDD at first step and this procedure would be very easy)
could I than recover the system from the visible partition or should this partition generally invisible?
Thank You and best greetings!
T. Brumm

Strange... I've to admit you pinpointed something: Toshiba is inconsistent here... To be safe, I would bet it's a 8mm. Still feasible, but more tricky.
Don't get me wrong: a 8mm heigh HDD fits but... and I guess you already read my comments on the other threads... the result is not really safe on the mechanical side. Still, with a little extra caution when moving around your Shift, everything is fine.
About Recovery partition, see this thread : Recovery from USB drive
Riki0081 is not hiding the Recovery Partition in order to boot on it from an USB dongle. Using a 4GB USB dongle is a very good solution...
Because as Riki0081 wrote HERE, Recovery boot (Fn+F3) won't work anymore if Recovery partition remains visible on the internal HDD.
By the way, I did it the lazy way: avoiding to deal with the Hidden Partition when possible.
Few weeks before getting the my 100GB HDD on-board, I let the Shift doing a Fresh install of Vista from the Recovery Partition. I rebooted on a CD with the Partition tool (Acronis), to copy the installed Vista onto an USB External HDD. At that time, I killed the Recovery Partition in order to save some space on the 40GB...
When my 100GB HDD arrived, I replaced the 40GB HDD with it, copying the initial Partition image (the "Fresh Vista installation") from the external storage back to the new 100GB HDD. Re-installing/organizing Applications and Data onto 2 "large" Logical partitions...
Hope my bad English is readable enough!
Hello Yann and thank You!
I think, I did understand Your post and I know, what to do!
And Your english is better than mine
Best regards!

SDD or HD
Somebody who did the step to SDD drive already?
Is it wise while the shift bis open to build in a SDD?
If so please share model and connections
Thanks and regards
sorry kinda random information
but having an acer aspire one means i have had to upgrade my **** 8gb ssd to a hdd
and we have a zif connecting ssd
and this question came up many times in the forum
what is the difference between zif and lf
well z is for zero and l is for low
oif is for insertion force
basically toshiba realised it wasnt zero inserton force at all, and their drives are LIF.
hitachi drives are ZIF (as far as I know) yet both require the same amount of force o push the cable in (basically none)
but hitachi drives require a flip cable as their pinouts are reversed or something like that, so for the shift i would guess you can only have toshiba
plus if anyone doesnt want their ld drives, im sure people at www.aspireoneuser.com/forum/index.php would love them for a price, to save getting them of ebay

Ameo 8GB and external HDD

Hello together!
I have an Ameo 8GB WM 6 which I want to use in my car - so far so good.
In addition, it is to play my MP3 collection.
But I have more Mp3 than 8 GB Mp3 - how can I extend the capacity?
Which external USB-HDD runs at the Ameo?
I have already tested a lot of HDD 2,5’’ - 1,8’’ - 3,5’’ but nothing works
I get only one USB-sticks to run!
Which capacity of USB-Sticks will work? 128GB?
Can I Use an external HDD with WLAN like the old ASUS WL-HD to map to the Ameo?
Can anybody help me?
I have searched a lot in various forums – some one has already running an external HDD via 4 in one cable.
Thanks!

There are two reasons why external HDDs don't work initially with the Athena:
1. Windows Mobile only has support for FAT volumes. Since most extHDDs now sold are formated as NTFS, they can't be read.
Solution: reformat (if you can) the HDD as FAT16/32. You might need to get a 3rd party program to do this as Windows XP won't format a drive in FAT if it's larger than 32GB (IIRC). USB flash drives are almost always formated in FAT16/32, which is why your Athena has no problem with them.
2. The HDD requires more power than the Athena can give. A standard USB port provides 500mA, but Windows Mobile devices that have USB Host/USB2Go only provide 100mA. That's good enough for nearly all keyboards, mice, and USB flash drives, but insufficient for HDDs (which can take as much as 700mA before spinning up).
Solution: You have to run the drive on external power if you want the Athena to read it.
I've done both the above and once got a 80GB drive mounted as an experiment. One odd thing about the Athena though - it'll only mount one drive from a USB hub.

I don't see why not, if you can figure out how to get a network drive mounted. It's supposedly straight forward (I've done that before with WM2003SE), but WM5/6 appear to be a bit more 'sensitive'.
the power Ok - I'll test it with an FAT32 formatted Disk!
And extarnal power!
Can I Use an USB-Y-Cabel for the power and plug the power USB to an running PC?
And it works fine
Trekstor USB 120GB works fine with HTC 7500 WM6
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
this will help "others",
because I tried a lot of different hardware for my athena HTC 7500
(dgimate ,like optical10 did suggest;it works but drains battery and wasn´t very foolproof)
but none did really satisfy my desires,
Today I bought a TrekStor USB 1 1/8 inch usb drive 120 GB and it works since a few hours very well,
I am using a HTC cable 4in 1 with mouse and a stowaway external bluetooth keyboard and everthing is working witout problems.
With SK-Tools I made a benchmark-test with Trakstor HD:
Reading : 15554 kb/s
Writing : 171 kb/s could be a bit faster
Hardware :
Athena Ameo T-Mobile
8 GB micro SD Sandisk
8 GB in build microdrive
external USB Digimate 160 GB Toshiba HD (battery draining)
Trekstor 120 GB 1 1/8 inch very small (like a credit-card)
a batterypack 6x1,3 V with an usb car adapter for the right voltage wth 10000 mah x1,3x 6 ist nearly 75000 mw or 7,5 Watt
Bluetooth Ear-Phone (usefull in car for speaking commands)
Simore silver Dual-Sim telefone-adapter wich works very fine (GSM only )
Stowaway bluetooth keyboard
USB cable mouse
Favorite software:
mortscipt,PocketDos(all my old clipper programs are working fine ) JKWörterbuch
Total commander
TomTom, IGO2008 and Navigon
(I tried them running all three in parallel and they work without problem)
System :
WM 6 professional CE OS 5.2.1620
Why I am writing this:
In many forums I found very divergent opinions about using the above hardware. Some human beings seam to like misleading "others".
P.S.
("I am searching an USB-Trackball WM-6 and 4in1 cable compatible), perhaps s.o. can give me a link where I can order such helpfull technic")
"Even until totay everything works fine because I copied this answer"
Ok
I tried 3 HDD all three formatted as fat32 and plugged to 4in1 cable.
The VGA software was turned off.
no one did work at all! I always used a power cable plugged into another running PC!
Do you think it might be the rom-version of T-mobile - should I take HTC?
@xdawis
If you say this one works: TrekStor USB 1 1/8 inch usb drive 120 GB

Which battery pack do you mean?
then I try to get it - but if it even don't works?

Hello Speedy2101,
I didn´t make any special settings on the Ameo,
I am using WM6 profesional
CEOS 5.2.1620 (Build 18125.0.4.2)
2007 Microsoft
Its original German WM6 from T-mobile
I upgraded from WM5
The first things you proof:
Does the 4in1 cable work correctly with an USB-Stick?
If it does , did you proof the microdrive with an other PC
With the HDD from Trekstor I didn´t even format it or did something like that
Otherwise I do not understand why it is working for me and not working with your application.

Ameo HDD New benchmark results !!!
I installed a new version (4.4.4.1)SK-Tools and tested my trekstor HDD again;
With the ameo it displays nearly the same results.
Has anybody got such unbelievable results?
Writing 176.63 kb/s
Reading 14321.68 kb/s
120 GB still works with Athena / Ameo
Is there anybody who is interrested in using an external 120 GB HDD with an ameo?
I can not believe that nobody else would like to use this comfortable facility
of external storage.
The 4in1 cable ad 120 GB are working without any problems since a couple of months.

I am, but at such a high price...($179) http://www.amazon.com/TrekStor-Data...QODM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1233618924&sr=8-1
definitely not in that kind of price.

Mobidapter: MicroSD to USB adapter

This adapter can be used as an alternative for the USB-Host functionality but I was afraid the microSD part wouldn't be long enough to fit the HD2 MicroSD slot.
So I managed to get its microSD part length according to expansys' product image:
The length is only 17mm but the minimum length to get it work with HD2 must be 20.5mm. I used a calliper to measure that.
So, I was hopping anyone would come up with an idea to use this adapter with HTC HD2.
Please notice that the adapter price is £29 excluding the shipping cost so I prefer not take the risk to disassemble it for extending the microSD length if it isn't possible.
Thanks in advance,
that's a very interesting product..
What is it for, are you trying to use a USB stick instead of your micro SD card?
If so, why?
a portable HDD caddy LOL
shame though, the MicroSD port wont put out 5v 500mah
although its probably enough to power a CF/MSproDUO/XD type of reader for example to clear some space on your digital camera card without deleting images (or simply to view them on a bigger screen )

Sometimes you really need work on a USB stick but you don't have access to PC.
Or as quasi_mojo said you can connect a card reader to your device...
Will I be able to play some mp3's directly from a pendrive with this device? Because I have about 25GB of music and I can't afford a 32GB microSD card.
i THINK (i could be wrong...) a pendrive would require more nearer 5volts to work...
opened up my SDcard reader a few days ago, plugged into usb with a 2gb sdcard...it was pulling 3.4-3.6volts while accessing the card, which is damn close to the MicroSD maximum voltage...
Anyone knows where to buy?
There is a shop in the USA, but who knows a shop in europe?
Greetings Ottschke from germany
PS Why not attache a harddrive to my Tab
Nook Color option
It would be cool if someone could make a Micro SD socket adaptor (with a usb converter cable) that would allow the ability to connect to and drive a scanner and a printer. One would need the appropriate app designed for it too. A nice option for the Nook Color.
Hi there,
I had the mobydapter here, but it didn't function with my galaxy 7 inch tab. Pity I had to send it back. No function beside beeing very unstable by nearly dropping out of my tab. Oh I forgot it was blinking. ;-)
***MOD EDIT*** shows a Mobiadapter attached to a Galaxt Tab 7 tablet.. Somebody said that this doesn´t work on that Tab... What kinda of marketing.. Argh!
The Mobiadapter no loger exist.
Someone know something like that?
Thanks for support
I need this product for a security research. If you happen to have one, even as used, please message me.

HDD not found

Hello
Yesterday I installed in my HTC Shift Photofast a G-Monster 1.8 "ZIF V2 128GB. SSD has been detected. During the installation Win7, actually almost the end, there was a error message: disk were not available etc. Rebooted. In the Bios was detected something. Just stood HDD1, no information, no producers, etc. Off. Cable tested for SSD. Still some time out and clean again. In the BIOS again without HDD1 info. Old HDD installed. The same HDD1: no info. Line from the Shift and expanded in an external HDD enclosure installed and tested on a different computer. HDD is detected. SSD is not recognized. Then again installed in the Lapi. Now the field is left blank. Do not stand HDD1 times. Whether by SSD or HDD. USB stick and USB CD Rom drive detected in bios and also work.
I have tried to withdraw BIOS battery overnight. without success
Now is the Shift out or even something you can test / check?
Greeting
Paul
P.S.: sorry for my bad english

Make sure the circular ribbon cable did not tear. This may be your problem. This is the only thing I can think of. I had all sorts of problems when I installed my SSD. But after going in a few times and actuallysecuring the ribbon cable properly to my drive, I was able to get it recognized and able to install Windows, although, mine is the Kingspec 128GB SSD.
I hope this helps, just make sure that the cable is inserted properly, all the way in, and it is secured.
Thanks!
PS
Did you see there is 2GB of RAM available to the SHIFT? It is offered by Mem-Store on Ebay. Please check the Shift's RAM thread for more details. I have bought and installed the module myself. I left them excellent feedback, my username being guyyyy!
Take care!
Hello
I tested it again. Connector is faulty. The defective point can not find. With a standard 40 pin ZIF connector it works. I ask for Connector at HTC. But I do not have much hope.
Photofast SSD I sold on Ebay. Can you recommend a good (possible cheap) SSD? 64GB is enough.
Paul
P.S.: 2GB of RAM I have already seen. I will definitely buy

The only experience I have are with the Kingspec. I had a friend install a Kingspec in his as well. I am not sure if they offer in a lower capacity though. Check ebay. Just type HTC SHIFT and sort by price, highest to lowest.
Go all the way to the lower priced items. This way you can either find the cable you need, OR a cheaper SSD. I hope you find what you are looking for.
This is the best advice I can give, as this is older hardware.
Take care and all the best.

That sounds right, because reading this forum the Heigth of the SSD needs to be no more than 5mm. This is where you need to be the most aware. Many standard drives that come in the 1.8 form factor have heigths of 8-9mm and those will cause you to have problems closing the shift (If I read correctly throughout this forum) So you need to make sure the heigth so these you listed look good.
I am not familiar with Runcore brand, but I wasn't with King Spec either, and it is working Exceptionally.
Take care and I hope this helps.

my core i3 4gb ram laptop is only a year old but takes awhile to boot, even after a fresh windows 7 install and no bloatware. my netbook has a ssd and it flies. is it possible to put win 7 on a usb drive & run it from there? i was thinking about replacing the laptop hdd with a ssd but (1) i must disassemble the laptop down to the mobo so it will be a huge pain the ass, and (2) i would go from 500gb to 128gb storage. it would be better to simply run win7 from a usb stick. has anyone done this?
lol .... first of all u prolly cant change the ssd of the netbook to have it run on the lappy ... it may be with a special (zif) connector or a form factor of mini pci-e card .
second , the usb drives speed is nowhere comparable with an ssd .
third , using a portable os for everyday work would be a humongous Pita .
fourth , year old model 32gb ssds are still very good and come for dirt cheap . most lappys have two drive bays , you can keep the hdd for data , or just ditch the dvd drive(havent had a dvd drive in my comp for 5-6 years)
