Can you track your speed using GPS?

I was just wondering if there are any apps out there that tell you how fast you're travelling, using your GPS.
I was just watching myself zoom across fields on google maps using GPS, as I am currently im a train.
Also, has anyone else noticed this terrible lag when typing, especially IE or Opera? :S

if you have virtualGPSce installed, you can click on the pannel tab and it has four gauges on of witch is speed.
I've never used it, but assume it works.
I've attatched the cab file in case you don't have it

Tracking Speed with GPS software
Yes you can track your speed using GPS. I am using Garmin Mobile XT North America Software w/ 2GB microSD with miniSD & SD adapters for Smartphone. I ordered it about two weeks ago and have been playing around with it for the last week or so. It has turn by turn spoken directions and if you have a gps enabled phone with internet access it will download traffic information before it calculates your route, awesome software so far. Still Trying to figure out how to change the arrow to a vehicle though. I have mine still on the 2gig sd card it came with. When your route is set and you hit go the map is shown and the speed is posted on the botom left and your arrival time on the bottom right. Click speed the tab on the bottom left and it give you trip information such as distance and max speed, etc. Hope this helps. The links for the two places I saw the product are below, got mine in about 3 days from Buygpsnow.com, after they shipped. It is still showing that they are instock.

Also forgot to mention if your Smartphone/PDA has bluetooth but does not have gps you can buy a bluetooth gps reciever and use the Garmin mobile XT Program.

Preferences-> page 4 of 5-> status Bar preference -> Speed CHECK IT!!!

It's been a while since I used GPSTuner, but I remember that I really liked the way it can display large gauges for speed, direction, etc. If you want to know your speed while street driving, I know TomTom will display such. If you just want an easy to read display with your speed, etc. GPSTuner works great.

Ive got gpstuner 5.2 and have to admit it is a good off road gps app. ive managed to get it to show google maps and goolge satalite but i cant get it to work with the terraserver at all. I want topographic maps for off road but they wont download through gps tuner, I just get unable to download when i try

Live search is awesome, its free, but there is no voice anything so it's hard to use safely
TeleNav..about 10 bucks a month, slow due to it's server based programs, good program when it works..after 3 days straight of server connection problems I canceled that membership. I used Live Search as a back up
TomTom's trail teaser was not useable for me
Navigon is awesome and in my opion the best in detail, performance, screen layouts, POI's etc..etc BUT big bucks and a memory hog, the North America maps are 1.6 gigs alone so it needed a dedicated SD Micro so that wasnt gonna work for me. Costs about $300 for the program and maps, which are sold seperately...still it worked the best and has the most sophisticated displays of all types of GPS info.
Garmin Moble XT cost me $99 bucks and works just fine for me. I DOES NOT SAY " turn left on Main St" but rather gives turn warnings like " turn left in .2 miles " etc then can give a tone before saying "turn Left"...programmable for the tone part. There is a nice large text display of the street name and turn info so just a glance at the street can confirm your turns with the voice command of "turn left". Also the maps are nice and clear. Cant back up the SD card so if you damage or loose it your outta 99 bucks.
All of them including the free Microsoft Live Search are capable of traffic, gas and other real time info with a data connection. ATT's Media Net worked and works just fine with all of them.
I also bought the external HTC GPS antennae which can and will increase the performance and reception in less than perfect signal strength areas...I highly recommend it.
That's my overpriced 2 cents !

If you use a cradle like I do the antennae plug could be an issue. Mine makes my phone sit a little funny in the cradle. I use a Gomadic Cradle. The battery dies quick using GPS so it needs to be on external power. Mines on GPS about 4-7hrs daily and without the external power a fully charged stock battery will only last a few hours at best.
That's my overpriced 2 cents !

That's my favorite. It's simple to use and free. Plus it can update itself online.

Tilt & GPS and Internet

Within the next 2 or 3 weeks. I'm planing on getting a Tilt. For all of you already having one I need some info. I've never had a GPS device or Cell phone with that capability so please inform me.
I'm really not playing on using the GPS feature maybe just to play around with and see how it works.
Do I need to have a GPS plan on my account to use this feature, I'm not going to need directions, I just want it to show my location on a map?
Am I correct thinking if I don't use Navagation (Get Directions) feature then its only using my Internet connection?
Can I use any GPS software on the phone?
I'm just trying to make sure I wont be charge for something that I really don't need, just want to try out to locating function here and there. I think it would be fun to have.

GPS is free for using...having a program that usings GPS might not be free..such as tomtom garmin etc...there are going to be free programs such as googlemaps (correct me if i'm wrong)...but using the GPS is completely free and has nothing to do with the cellular provider.

You are pretty much correct.
To use "GPS" to connect to satellites to determine your location does not cost anything.
Applications like Google Maps and MS Live Search can determine your location and give you directions at no cost. They use your data connetion to download maps.
Other applications like Telenav (which you will have a link to download it on your Tilt) charge for downloading directions.
And other apps use pre-installed maps and do not require a data connection. These come in handy where reception is bad.

This is my first phone with these kinds of features, options and capabilities too Before this Kaiser..aka Tilt I had a Razor V3
You can disable your DATA connection through Comm Manager so it will never access or try to access your provider ( mines ATT/Media.Net)
I suggest doing that otherwise you'll find the charges on your bill and not even know you were using the service. Also you can block DATA through your provider and plan.
I did the 1 month free trail with telenav..it was ok but had problems and is slow since it's all server based ( data connection!!). Plus it will cost you about $10 per month..unless you sign up for years then it goes down to around $5 per month...that was not " attractive" to me
I now use and have used for 4 months Garmin XT..its pretty cool and I drive alot ( 3k miles per month ).

I really don't need the GPS feature but would like to be able to try it out, mess with the trakking on it from a few projects I've seen. I rarely try some place to an area I've never been before so its not like I need the directions thing. The first thing I'll do is proably remove telenav from the phone just to make sure I don't accidently use it.
So aslong as I remove telenav, and I have my unlimited internet on my phone I should be all good.

Looking for GPS program recommendations

I'm considering a GPS for the Tilt and am looking for some recommendations on what programs work well for some of you. However, I do not want one that uses ATT data since I'm wifi only have no use for the ATT data plan. On a side note I keep getting a message saying the current GPS software on the phone is out of date. This is the GPS software that came with the phone. How do I disable this and or remove the program to stop this annoying message. I unchecked tell me when software is out of date but I still get those damn messages.

The notification is from QuickGPS, which caches a small database of satellite position/orbit info to facilitate faster GPS fixes. Just run it and let it download the updated data.
Since you don't want a data plan, your only option is to pony up the money and buy something like TomTom or Garmin or another commercial, standalone navigation map.
Anything free like Google Maps or Live Search needs a data connection to push the map data, so unless you have your own mobile satellite wifi hotspot with you, you need one of the standalone commercial apps.

I think that you are advising him to:
1. connect to the internet and
2. download data
He has specifically said that he does not have a data plan - this means that every week (when the data goes out of date) he will pay a siginificant sum to get this data.
I agree that he will need to get TomTom (my recommendation) or some other simlar program. But without a data plan he should not download the Quick GPS data in my opinion.

Is there any way to completely kill that Quick GPS. As I said I told it not to inform me when it's out of date but it still does. This is getting to be annoying.

Tomtom (and the purchased NAV programs that do not use internet data) have no monthly fee (you will however have to pay to update your maps - probably yearly)
I do not know how to turn off that notification - possibly look at add/remove programs and remove quickGPS?

So, your saying he cannot connect to the internet with wifi and downlad a simple little file?? Turn off auto updates in QuickGPS and just update it manually once a week when on wifi - what's so hard about that?

Start QuickGPS, then menu -> options and uncheck the option to autoupdate.

TomTom can be installed just like any other application, with a cab file. But the Maps are usually huge which can be loaded onto a Storage card. There is no monthly fee or data requirements but the initial price maybe expensive. (Not quite sure on the last line )

even still he is going to need a data plan or it is going to take him dumb long to get a fix with out quick gps. Unless he uses his wifi every 6 days.

Don't know about anyone else but im in the habit of leaving my Kaiser connected to my main PC when im not using it so it's always synced and quickgps just downloads the data then.
On a note about which GPS software to recommend, i'd go for IGO8 over TomTom.
To me it just seems a lot slicker even over TomTom 7.
Of course it doesn't come with things like Mapshare (which I can't get working yet for TomTom 7 even after reading the threads) and i've yet to work out how to download TomTom POI's from pocketgpsworld and convert them for IGO8 but I love tinkering with it and finding out how to do things.

AHHHH!!!! WIFI - sure - should work with no problem - if I were him though I would make sure that I search for how to turn off getting data accidentally - he still wants to turn off his popup and I don't know how to do that - do you?

In options, if you turn off auto-update and the reminder the data has expired, that should do it.
If he does like cotc2001 does and has it hooked up to a PC regularly, then leave the auto-download via Actice Sync checked to get regular updates when connected.

Tom Tom 6 and Google Maps Combination
If you're a newcomer or person who gravitate towards stability or functionality like me, you're better off with Tom Tom V6. It's extremely user friendly and very stable in most, if not all, cooked roms. Most other GPS softwares are not as functional, require tweaks and tricks to make it work, clash with other installed apps (ie HTC Home, etc). IGO 8, to me, is eye candy (similar to the eye-phone, lol), and a severe memory hog to the point it'll make your device reboot. The time it takes most people to get most GPS apps working correctly on their device might as well cook up several Diamond or Kaiser roms, lol, for that matter. Tom Tom V7 (I read) is good, but it's still relatively new and require tweaks as well. When it comes to GPS, it is, in my humble opinion, that a GPS app/software (PDA/PNA) should be stable, functional, user friendly, and more importantly it's RELIABLE. Believe that!!!.
If you want simple, clear cut, easy to read directions with/without voice, and stability ... Tom Tom 6 is the way to go and require no tweaking or editing of any kind like the others. I would also recommend the latest version Google Maps (require data plan) as well. It's a good combo and they compliment each other nicely.

All the items in this path are unchecked. I'm still getting those stupid messages when I've told it not to notify me when updates are required.

I have NODATA installed and running on the phone so I've disabled all connections to ATT Data. This does prevent me from accidently getting data correct?

That dams message popped up again. The following choices are under the above path and all 3 are unchecked.
1)Remind me when data expires
2)Auto download when data expires
3)Auto download when connected to PC via activesync
I repeat all 3 are unchecked. Why is this update message still terrorizing me?

Not sure, my Tilt doesn't behave that way. Did you soft reset after unchecking them? The notifications is set by a registry key, so maybe it's not getting reset correctly?

After doing it I did turn it on & off ( soft reset). Can't I just uninstall this piece of &%$# quick gps? There's nothing listed for it under remove programs.

Data Usage Monitor

Going to Norway, Sweden and Finland for about a month. Plan on using the Tilt for GPS navigation using tomtom.
I got a plan put on my phone that gives me 20MB per month roaming data internationally. After that it's a total screwjob in Scandinavia at about $20 per additional mb.
SO . . . I'm looking for:
1. recommendations for an unobtrusive cab that will allow me to track my total data usage out of my Tilt so that I can avoid overages (freeware would be nice, but not required). Have SPB MS 2.1 & SPB PP 4.0
2. way to make sure various little polling cabs are not sucking up bandwidth (w/o hunting down and uninstalling everyone). Can I do something to my data connection but still use GPS for tom tom?
3. What kind of data usage am I likely to see trying to use tomtom for GPS? Will probably drive about 2500km in 7 days using it most of the driving time if possible. I know using google maps or WinMo live search would blow me out of the water.

Data monitoring:
Battery Status, Spb GPRS Monitor, ... both are great, Battery status has also some other useful options
Dont know for sure, but I think tomtom is not using data connection, so u can use your gps without data plan. Just download (purchase) maps of the countries u are going through and u can use gps.

3) For simple navigation with tomtom, you don't need any data connection because te use of gps data is free for everyone.
You need a connection only for the optional services like traffic, mapshare, meteo, etc. but not for basic navigation

You can also use Schaps AdvConfig or the previous Kaiser Tweak to completely disable data connections, and then only enable them when you want access. It might take an extra 15 seconds before you start browsing each time, but at least the data blocking is foolproof enough.

im looking for a program that counts my data and the number of connections..and just very simple and plain...without any extra stuff just that i can see my average data usage over a month or a few days...
i once had a programm like that on my wizard but since it died its gone...

I believe some kaiser comes with GPRS Monitoring software. Check your bundle. Actually it's made by SPB but customized for Kaiser.
As usual, Google is your friend, and you can do a little search first. I did 'data monitor kaiser xda' and turned out the very program I used: SPB Monitor (which is the upgrade of GPRS monitor).

I use SPB Monitor since long time ago, work great. Can do calculation how much uyou have to pay for your connection too
